Is the 2019 Mercedes-Benz A-Class Better Than the CLA? | Edmunds

  • Edmunds Senior Writer Mark Takahashi got behind the wheel of the all-new 2019 Mercedes-Benz A-Class to answer a few questions. He wasn't a fan of the last "affordable" Benz, the CLA, and needed to know if this $30,000 sedan is deserving of the Mercedes badge. Also, he had to find out how much better the A-Class is than the CLA.
    In the end, Mark was duly impressed, proclaiming the 2019 Mercedes-Benz A-Class the new class leader.
    Q: What kind of engine does the 2019 Mercedes-Benz A-Class have?
    A: The A 220 gets a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that makes 188 horsepower.
    Q: How much does the 2019 Mercedes-Benz A-Class cost?
    A: Prices start around $30,000. The test vehicle in this video is fully loaded and is closer to $50,000.
    Q: Does the 2019 Mercedes-Benz A-Class replace the CLA?
    A: It doesn't. The A-Class will be the new entry-level Benz sedan, and the CLA is considered the entry-level "four-door coupe." The CLA is also due for a full redesign next year.
    Q: What are the 2019 Mercedes-Benz A-Class' competitors?
    A: Principal rivals include the Audi A3 and the BMW 2 Series and 3 Series.
    Q: When does the 2019 Mercedes-Benz A-Class go on sale?
    A: Look for the A 220 to show up in dealerships in early 2019.

    That's not a 30k car, it's a 50k car.
    Can someone please test a base model with no options so we can get to see what the underlying car is really like?

    • @MrHav1k
      @MrHav1k 5 ปีที่แล้ว +48

      You can't even get the base model as you'd likely need to order it yourself and nobody who would go through the trouble of ordering one would only get a base model. That's the story with these cars. They advertise a $30k price, but the most common models are at least 8-10k more. In practice this is really a $38k car at least.

    • @seamuscarroll2779

      True, and the journalists reviewing these cars should be calling the manufacturers out on this. Instead they seem to be happy to help perpetuate the fiction. Makes me question just how independent and unbiased their reviews really are.

    Well of course it's better than the cla (That car has been out for 4 years now). However the cla does hold its advantages by having more power but that's it (In terms of quality , this makes the cla look dull). Not many reasons to choose the cla over this until the redesign comes out. Great review as always .

    Who in the right mind would spend 2/3 the cost of the car in options? We’re not talking about super or hyper cars here...this shouldn’t even be allowed in this segment.
    This doesn’t give a good representation of what value this car can offer, if it can even offer that, I wouldn’t know because it was an upper echelon spec that 99% of buyers wouldn’t purchase.

  • @BN99239
    @BN99239 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Sure 188hp if "enough" but that is still very little power for a car costing a base $33,500. There is a lot of road noise as well. A Honda Accord has more power and quieter ride.
    I will say that the A220's interior is nice but in a sense that it looks more techy and futuristic. This does not mean the quality of the interior materials are necessarily nicer, even talking about the optioned out $50,000.
    You're paying for the Mercedes badge. That's it. Take a look at their options package. It's ridiculous. To get anything nice, you're spending above $40k... And you're still sitting at 188hp.

    *Much better is the Hatchback version in Europe and the 'B' Class offers far more space in the car and boot (trunk) The best Model (in my humble opinion) is the B200CDi 8 Speed Diesel which is capable of over 140 mph and 74 mpg, (UK GALLONS) although not at the same time mind you, however can manage in excess of 50 MPG in Speeds in excess of 100mph on German Autobahns of course. I have a 2019 B200 CDi AMG Line with Premium Pack, and can honestly say the best car I ever owed, and that includes many earlier Mercedes Models including a 280SE and 420SE, 450SLR, and a Rolls Royce Silver Shadow. The Technology is amazing and barely touched in this video, IE Mercedes "Navigate to Bill Bloggs" and if in your phone contact list (with address) will offer routes to "Bill Bloggs" also change the lighting to Blue, what's the weather tomorrow, where is the nearest Gas Station/Cafe etc, it just goes on and on.*

    Looks fun but i own 2018 CLA coupe for 1 month now and i am still in love with every sexy curve of it , both exterior and interior, and i just enjoy the CLA's fierce look & bucket seats but it's a personal preference :) Just for price comparison , when you say an A class is $30,000 in your country, how much does CLA cost over there?

    It's not really a 30k Merc though is it. Not a fan of the CLA but this looks better. Might change my mind when I see it in real life though.

      it's like asking why is there a CLS when we got E, one is four door coupe one is sedan.
      Also for anywhere BUT usa, they get a hatch, which makes more sense, a small compact hatch (A class) vs small four door coupe (CLA)

      That is a problem with mid-segment luxury cars. People that can afford luxury cars don't really want them then, and the people that want cheaper cars still can't afford them because they are expensive to maintain with expensive mercedes parts.
