Yes! You'd think that the four of them would be more than capable, of say, writing a couple (or three) of tracks apiece? Meet up, have a laugh, throw some ideas around, bounce off one, and the other(s). Do some clever, but serious-ish stuff, interspersed with a few typically, off-the-wall, bonkers numbers. WHY NOT, for goodness's sakes! Have these boys become so boring, and hateful, of each other, that they just can't bring themselves, to share studio space, and be happy - If only for one more time and, dare i say, FOR THE FANS!
Gouldman and Stewart don’t speak to each other. Stewart and Creme are related ( married to sisters) and still keep in touch. Creme has fallen out with Godly since he dissolved the partnership in 1989. So sadly a reunion will never happen.
As a track Don’t Hang Up it always fascinated me because of all the different rhythms and beats in just this track ! Never heard anything like it before or since! Brilliant !
I admire Kevin and Lol so much. I've been a big fan of 10cc for a few years and finding this was such a delightful surprise. I am from Mexico but rn I am in England, one of my reasons to come here was my admiration for talented artists like Kevin Godley. One of my favourite artists and biggest inspirations!!
Where have I been, shame on me. The later 10CC music is all I knew about. Recently had a friend teach me a few things about 10CC. I am astounded on their "art pop" contribution. Outstanding and creative, a breath of fresh air for me. Appreciate this interview and getting an insight even further. thanks for posting!
HI Steve, thanks for tuning in for this min-epic! 10cc were a great, undervalued band I think, though they probably stuck around a bit too long. The later records are more ordinary than the early stuff.
Extraordinary interview. Kevin Godley is such an interesting individual. Great storyteller and his recollections about his earliest days, pre-10cc was so compelling. Truly enjoyed this!
I knew that 10cc's music meant a lot to you James. We spoke about the first two albums in length a few years ago. It is great to see that Kevin gave you so much time. The questions and the answers were great. Fine job~ Rob/Boston
Hi Rob, thanks for stopping by for this one. It did amaze me how generous Kevin was with his time - he wasn't out to promote anything, and it was incredibly kind of him to let me upload the video to TH-cam. Part 2 has some cool stuff in it, more focussing on the Godley and Creme years, and the videos. Thanks Rob, always great to hear from you.
Such a great interview - thank you! I feel like you covered it all pretty much! One subject not covered (if you ever do another one) is his ownership of Tara House, Chertsey, previously owned by Keith Moon and subsequently owned (and criminally remodeled) by the guy from Erasure. It was a wonderful structure, and I'd be curious to hear any stories about it and/or see pictures of it during the time it was Chez Godley.
I was glad that Kevin was asked about his drumming. Seeing this interview makes me appreciate 10cc even more as musicians, and helps me understand why Kevin and Lol went off on their own. Great questions, great listening and thanks to Kevin for his sincerity and information. Even though l love the polish of The Original Soundtrack, l would also rank Sheet Music as my favorite 10cc album, and glad Kevin Godley agrees!
Well done James - must have been a thrill to be granted such in depth access to one of your musical heroes, you did a nice job on the editing. I liked the comment from Kevin about music meaning something in those days, a feeling that has gone missing in more modern times. From a germ to a disease, great capsule description of the creative process...he seems quite frank and funny, kudos on asking a question he hadn't heard before - must be a rare occasion with such a long career! He seemed to really agree with your assessment of the band lacking something in its visual presentation - an interesting point to ponder on, how much of the iconic status some groups enjoy today is due to that sort of stage bombast or image aesthetic. Cheers!
Ha, well the question he'd never been asked before was probably because he'd never been interviewed by a drummer before. It's all we ever want to know about! It was interesting to hear Kevin's views on how 10cc fell short visually. I loved the story about being upstaged by Queen - he shouldn't feel bad though as I suppose Queen pretty much upstaged everyone! Cheers Doug!
@@jamesgriffithsmusic Yep, and Feel The Benefit, and The Things We Do For Love, and many other great tunes by this unique band. Kevin Godley seems to be one of the really great guys in music.....I love how TH-cam (and TH-camrs like you) are allowing us to see that many of these great artists are just regular guys.
As a fan of 10cc from the beginning I don't think a big lighting show or other 'gimmicks' would have 'added' anything to their stage show, if anything I think it may have distracted from their clever lyrics and the variety of their music. Unlike Queen and Genesis they didn't have a charismatic front man who use the light show as a back drop to their performance. Saying that, I'm sure that if 10cc had appeared for the first time 2 or 3 years ago, with the 4 creative members they would have come up with something a bit special using today's technology. Thanks for the memories Kevin.
Oh I discovered The Original Soundtrack as a kid. I don't know anyone who was bowled over with that LP like me. 10cc meant a lot to me - their work from 1972 -1976.
What a fascinating video, James! Kevin is a great interviewee. I love his honest, no-nonsense approach. All contributors asked really intelligent questions and I think your remark about 10cc's visual aspect -or lack of one!- was spot on. A great opportunity lost for the band back then. 'Donna' always reminded me of 'Oh Darling!' by the Beatles! Really looking forward to part 2. Cheers, James!
James, your expertise comes through leading with great questions and drawing out awesome stories. This was extreme’s interesting from a group I use to have a few albums from. Not easy to do something like this but you make it seem easy. Well done and I look forward to part 2
wow well done on getting this insight. This is worth every minute just for the Gizmotron alone. I'm Not in Love is one of only a few songs ever that is capable of suspending time itself. I can remember my brother playing dreadlock holiday over n over, cheers great vids
Thanks Stevie, glad you enjoyed it! I felt really honoured getting this scoop as Kevin is one of my all-time musical heroes (along with the rest of 10cc). Btw I gave you a shout-out a few videos ago, forget which. Maybe the last finds video. Hope you're doing well.
I do think a reunion is NOT possible. But a one-on project is. Please tell Kevin Godley that One Night In Paris is an unfinished masterpiece of an opera. Get your skills together and finish it, please!
Great chat with Kevin!. You all asked some great questions and he seemed very relaxed and open.Good question about Kevs' drumming James, I would have liked to ask a similar question of Lol or Eric regarding the guitar. Really looking forward to part 2.😉👍
Thanks Rob! He was incredibly relaxed and open. My drumming question is typical of drummers, it's all they ever want to know about! He seemed a bit bamboozled by it. Glad you enjoyed it, part 2 coming as soon as I organise it.
Loved this interview but...ironic that Kevin is a master video maker but this video quality is not great. What is that in his house moving around? Looks like a large bird?
As much as I like their music, in both band form; and separately. I don't share your enthusiasm about the Beatles. I just don't see how they could write such a song catalogue; in a short space of time. Plus better social comment from Ray Davies and Pete Townshend. Probably.I preferred Brian Wilson and especially Pet Sounds. 10cc I think were heavily influenced by The Beach Boys. Especially Goldman Godley and Creme. Eric Stewart was very McCartneyesque and not my cup of tea. But Eric was a better musician. Graham Goldman a schoolboy writing for 60s pop 👍
It's a dam shame that the four of them have never got back together for a reunion i really do think it would be great just to see 10cc one more time

Fascinating stuff, always loved Consequences and Ismism. Super clever and creative videos too.
Much appreciated!

Thank you for the upload, I really enjoyed listening to this. One of my favourite bands of all time. :)
Thanks...don't forget to check out part 2!

Great video james amazing getting to speak to him. Such a lovely man. Great insight.
Cheers George, yes great chap. I couldn't quite believe I was talking to him. I guess the Zoom thing makes it seem a little less real.
Brilliant from start to finish. Thanks, James, for sharing this fascinating conversation with us. Cheers. Jeff
Thanks Jeff, so glad you enjoyed it! I remember you saying how much you liked Mandy Come Fly Me.

Thanks Nick! Agree about Donna being uncannily like Oh Darling.
Godley/Creme did that a few times. "Sale of the Century" - no two opinions of where the inspiration for that one came from...
IMO …. Kevin had the best voice out of all the vocalist in 10cc …and that is saying something as they were all excellent singers.
Great scoop 👌
Thank you James - really enjoyed this.
You're welcome! Part 2 coming soon.
Hi James, I really enjoyed this. Kevin seems to be a really down to earth bloke. I must dig out some of my 10cc records and give them a spin!
Thanks Richard! Some good stuff coming in part 2 about the video-making years and working with the Beatles.
Very enjoyable discussion, great questions! Thank you!

To me they were just as important as the Beatles innovative so much talent just wonderful musicians artists..
The second sitting for the last supper was genius!
Agreed, great track and one of their heaviest.
This is wonderful. I remember seeing 10 CC records but I’ve never listened to them.
They're probably not your kind of thing, but if any of the records is worth you trying it's probably 'Sheet Music'.
I do think a reunion is NOT possible. But a one-on project is.

Great interview. He really is too modest about his drumming isn't he? Look forward to part 2.
Yes, very down-to-earth guy. Thanks for watching, part 2 coming at the weekend.
Drummer singer songwriter and doing videos for other big groups.Had a wonderful voice love listening to the albums.❤️
Somewhere in Hollywood is my favourite 10cc track.

woah!
Have always loved 'Somewhere in Hollywood' - almost prog. But then Sheet Music was their pinnacle IMHO.
How dare you the best for me 👍
You surprised him with the drum question.
Yes, I don't think he knew what to make of it at all - it was like he'd actually he'd forgotten he was the drummer.
Wonder what they were doing at Abbots Manor (5:28).
Probably smoking a lot of weed.
Inventor of the GIZMO
that's in part 2.
