--- Brief History:
They had attended art school and worked together in different media before releasing singles under the names The Yellow Bellow Room Boom then Frabjoy and Runcible Spoon. They later got tons of experience working at Strawberry Studios and formed Hotlegs then 10cc with Eric Stewart and Graham Gouldman.
After releasing 4 excellent art rock albums, the duo left the group to focus on bringing their device for electric guitar or bass, the Gizmotron, to market alongside a triple album called "Consequences" that showed the abilities of the Gizmo.
In 1979, the duo directed their first music video and during the '80s they were hired to direct innovative videos for artists including George Harrison, Ringo Starr, Duran Duran, Elton John, Toyah, Wang Chung, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Peter Gabriel, The Police, Sting, 10cc, and more.
Before parting ways in 1988, the duo released some incredible albums including "L," "Freeze Frame," and "Ismism." Their styles include Art Pop, Progressive Rock, New Wave, and more while always sounding unique.

Special thanks to Erik and Sarah McComb, Ashli Dunkley, and Kevin Arnold. Though I didn't use any of the stuff you recorded Kevin, I'm sorry you had to hear it this way. I love you.

Wow, that was truly very very well done. I am impressed and thankful for this story of Godley and Creme (impressed by your skills) . Cry was and still is my favorite song from them it flips me back into my childhood... Just brilliant
Thank you so so much for watching and leaving kind words! It's crazy how many times "Cry" got stuck in my head while researching this video. I must have listened to it over 40 times
Nice job brother. You did a very thorough effort including a respectable tribute to the fabulous (to true Godley & Creme fans) "Consequences". I'm not crazy about hearing the dialogue more than a couple of times. But all of the music is exceptional and outstanding. Choosing G & C as subject matter is greatly appreciated by this fanatic. I am completely impressed with your achievement. You obviously put a lot of work into this. I totally agree with your assessment of "L". It is nothing short of brilliant. One small critique and it's very small. Its pronounced RUNcible as in "I had to run some errands". Not ROONcible. That's it. Otherwise you covered it all beautifully. You are to be commended. CONGRATULATIONS!
Wow, thank you so much! I've been so anxious to see what a long time fan has to say about the video. And I love that the only thing you corrected me on was a pronunciation. I'm feeling very proud, thank you sir!
@@SeansMusicHunt you actually made me laugh a couple times too. Like when you were talking about the Wang Chung video. What you did was hilarious. Seriously, you did a great job and should be VERY proud!
I am. Thank you so much! I'm ecstatic that you appreciate my video, I'm scared it will get buried in TH-cam's algorithm and no one will see it.
10cc are possibly the most cutting edge Quartet ever assembled. Their musical genius knew no bounds.
My initial thought was, "hasn't this guy heard The Beatles?" Haha. But, when you consider how much of The Beatles innovation was from their production team, and the fact that 10cc produced themselves, I think there is a strong argument in your favor.
Thank you for watching!
@@SeansMusicHunt Thanks dude. I've admired the talents of 10cc since I was a 6 year old kid in the middle mid seventies and then totally absorbed myself into their music with the release of their 1985 ish album Changing Faces, The Best of 10cc and Godley and Creme. Then I discovered a live in Japan CD in about 1992, which I've actually played to death, ( many of the tracks no longer play successfully😆) The live versions of Art for Art's Sake and I'm Mandy, Fly Me are among the greatest masterpieces ever put on record and to think they're live concert tracks, is nothing short of flabbergasting. The guitar solo on Art for Art's Sake is mind-blowing, audio perfection.
@manosparavida3551 I know I've heard those, but I spend more time with the studio versions and you're making me want to turn them in right now.... They're truly genius
I like so much music that Godley and Creme perfectly fit my tastes on each album
They're amazing! Thank you for watching and leaving comments!
This is a heartwarming mini-documentary about one of the most creative musicians and video artists of the 70s. It all began with the purchase of the album 'Sheet Music,' and from that moment on, it transformed the music scene. I appreciate the way you presented it and acknowledge Godley and Crème for the credit they rightfully deserve.
Thank you for watching and appreciating what i spent many hours doing. I love them so much and am glad people can share their live here
"Sheet Music" was a very good album to set the stage for following the band. I don't think 10cc was ever as fun as Sheet Music again, although there's a mountain of other tracks that are great.
Agreed.
Thank you so much for this.
Thank you so much for appreciating it!!
Comprehensive. Nicely done. Good to see a younger person appreciate these guys. I've been following them since the early 1970s. I wasn't initially a fan of Ismism/Snack Attack but it has grown on me over the years and I truly love the title track, The Party and Ready for Ralph. Lots of very good ideas/songs executed well over the years. You did them justice.
Thank you so much! I appreciate the great comment. And I do still very much enjoy Ismism as well, I think I sound more harsh in the video than intended.
Thank you for this video. I love "Consequences", one of the most "out there" concept albums. I still have my vinyl boxed set bought in a clearance sale the late 1970s (5 uk pounds!) and two CD releases (a 2CD set from around 2000 and a 5CD box from 2018). There was also a cut down album entitled "Music from Consequences" containing just the songs without the dialogue. Loved the "hole" reference too! 😂
Thank you for appreciating my work! That's cool that you have so many awesome versions of "Consequences"
I'm jealous! If love to have my hands on those!
Thank you for watching and commenting!
I've been a fan of 10cc and G&C for a while but I haven't listened to Consequences until last night, and I can't stop thinking about it. You've made a wonderful companion piece to their eclectic careers. Cheers!
Thanks so much for watching and I'm glad you're enjoying that crazy album!
Thanks that you made this video, to one of the most interesting acts in music history. I love Godley and Creme.
Thank you for watching and commenting!
Awesome video and charmingly hilarious host dude!
Thank you, Christian. I love you
Loved Godley and Creme. Played goodbye blue sky to death. Desperate Times is an all time fave song. Good vid.
Thank you, sir. I appreciate you taking the time to comment and share with us!
I was asked by a friend in September 1973 if I fancied helping load-in etc, for 10cc at the California Ballroom in Dunstable[UK}..I thought it would be fun,so on Sept.8th,arrived at about 3-00pm met them,[very easy going chaps]they showed me their set-up,including a Mini-Moog,which was being used purely for percussion effects, and a tape cartridge device for playing jingles [on radio] for playing sound effects..for that gig they were using Paul Burgess as drummer, along with Kevin...after the gig I asked about, and was shown the original Gizmo, which did look a bit clunky..attached to a tatty Strat..and I got paid a few pounds,{which barely covered my own petrol cost},but hey,all good fun....I might add,Kevin and Lol turned up in an AC428,while Gaham,Eric, and Paul arrived in a big old limousine..

I LOVED Consequences. Stampede was so cool!
Great job....
Thank you! 😀
Well done. An excellent short documentary about the quirkier half of one the greatest groups ever. You clearly put a lot of effort into it. Your research is top drawer.
Thank you so much for watching! I really appreciate you, Steven! Gotta love 10cc!
This is excellent. Well done and thank you
Thank you for watching!
Comprehensive. I don’t think anyone else has delved into the nooks and crannies of G&C as thoroughly as you have here on TH-cam ( …or was the cat the real puppet master?). I especially appreciate the inclusion of Mondo Video. I recall seeing it for sale long ago at Virgin Records on Sunset Strip… and then bits of it landed up on TH-cam. It’s super indulgent in the weirdest but intriguing ways. These guys loved to play around in their video and tech sandbox… package it and move on to the next “what if we did this?” idea . ‘Kind of veering more into navel-gazering without much care to what happened commercially -or so it seemed. They floated in the commercial sphere on their one-time pop status and just when you thought they’d dried up …another release would come out. Now they seem to regard each other like the friends you knew in high school but never find a space in your adult life for. They both remain great heroes of the creative fringe who still had a foot in pop culture as well.
Great comment, thanks for sharing. They're very inspiring to me. And yes, Heero, the cat, is obviously the one running the house and my life.
That's reassuring. Careful with that drill!@@SeansMusicHunt

BRILLIANT
SOOOOOO EFFIN BRILLIANT
I am astounded a man as young as you as an appreciation, as intense as this of these musicians
I’m 70yo
As a 20-year-old I kind of liked both 10cc and Godley & Creme …
whats not to like
art for arts sake
rubber bullets
And I’d already been an amateur pop historian for several years
but your critique has given me the most amazing insight into what these guys were doing
I was pretty casual with my appreciation
but now it’s WOW!!
I wished I had had your perception then …
You are doing a really incredible job
Wow! Thank you so much! That's one of the best compliments I've received! I'm really glad that my video helped you learn a thing or two and appreciate the brilliance of Godley and Creme!
@@SeansMusicHunt
no worries , how did you find them?
Ya know, it's kind of funny that I make these types of videos for TH-cam but I rarely watch other TH-cam videos about bands and their histories. But it was probably in around 2017 or 2018 that TH-cam suggested a video about "I'm Not on Love" by 10cc. Previously, I had never really cared for that song, now understanding that I never actually heard the full version, nor did I understand the brilliance of how it was created. After watching that video, I eventually became a huge fan of 10cc And being a fan of experimental music and people who aren't afraid to express their creativity, I eventually dived into Godley and Creme. But just as a side note, ever since I was a teenager, I have enjoyed learning everything I can about old bands from the '60s and '70s.
Omg bro you don't even know how much this content is needed. I have been saying to people for YEARS (years!) How 10cc were one of the best bands of the 70s and how no one should ignore them, let alone's Godley & Creme's records in the late 70s (not to mention their innovative video work, see Yes "Leave it") So glad you made this!
Thank you for the best of compliments. Please share then? 😁
I'm thrilled you enjoyed it and driven to work on my next video today. Been taking forever because I want it as good as possible
Godley and Creme did play live once, but it was for a TV show called Gastank. They were on stage with Andy Fairweather-Low and Rick Wakeman, amongst others, and played two songs. It's here on TH-cam
Yeah, I don't really consider that "Godley and Creme" live, it's more like Kevin Godley and Lol Creme playing live. Thank you for watching and leaving information, I very much appreciate it though I don't perceive it the same way as you.
Nice cat feature. Gizmotrons rock.
Thank you so much for watching, mom!
Wow Thank you for this.
Thank you for the thank you. It was my pleasure and honor to create though it took many months of work
@@SeansMusicHunt The pleasure is mine, I was looking for information about the band and I came across this gift.
Thank you for informing me that I serve a purpose. 😂
Comments like these motivate me to do more. Lately though, I've been prioritizing my new band and strength training
Thank you! Great work on this documentary. I’ve been a big fan of Godley & Crème for years but you taught this old man much! Can’t wait to see your video on 10cc, also an old fav.
Thank you so much for watching and leaving kind words! I'm glad I could be helpful!
Being a huge fan of 10cc and G and C, thanks for posting. More a fan of G and C's art rock/pop music than their videos (they were very experienced, innovative talented musicians, creating and producing a very rich seam of music with 10cc)....I always lamented that they left 10cc as the fissure in '76 threw all into oblivion instead of stratospheric success that they were all deservedly due. They turned in to mediocre video moguls (and probably made pot loads of money in the process) and produced flat sounding records that their hearts weren't truly in whilst Gouldman and Stewart mostly turned into Paul McCartney at his most schmaltzy...............Very sad...Why couldn't they have taken a leaf out of Queen's book and stuck together as 10cc?
Sure would have been awesome if they stuck together... It would be easier to rank 10cc as one of my top bands of all time.. thank you for sharing your thoughts! I appreciate it and am glad you enjoyed the videos!
On I Pity Inanimate Objects, an Eventide Clock Works Inc. Harmonizer was employed to pass the vocals through as well as distortion effects, Godley & Creme were already early users of distortion and delay technology such the Kepex noise gate so effectively employed on their Consequences project 3 years earlier
Awesome, and now I want a gizmatron.
Oops, accidental advertisement. Thanks for watching Dad!
Thanks so much for your feature on Godley and Creme. I still believe 10cc was one of the best bands ever, and Godley and Creme did some remarkable things. My favourite albums by Godley and Creme are 'L' and Goodbye Blue Skies. I still enjoy my 10cc(Stewart/Gouldman) and Godley and Creme albums and wish them all the best.
Thanks again for your time and talent in featuring some of my favourite musicians.
Thank you so much for watching and commenting! I really appreciate you leaving your opinions
@@SeansMusicHuntThanks again Sean for your great story on Godley and Creme(former 10cc). Will check out your 10cc story. All the best to you.
@@hartleycwhite Thank you my new friend
Brits....again...excellent 80's music..great voices...
Thanks a ton for watching! I appreciate it
Learned a lot about bands and artists I’ve never heard of, but definitely checking some of this stuff out!
Thank you bro! I appreciate you watching and commenting!
L! Yeah!!! This Sporting Life, Sandwiches of You, fantastic!
Seriously. I was a mega 10cc video and had already made that other video you watched before I heard "L" and now it is one of those albums where I will forever remember where I was when listening to those two tracks that you mentioned. I was walking to the 711 outside my friend's gated community in the Philippines. I have a horrible, horrible memory. But I doubt I'll forget that.
Thank you for watching both of my videos on these lads!
7:20
Love that sound effect, good shout on that
😂 love it! This video is full of Easter eggs but no one ever points them out as I'd hoped they would
I enjoyed your take on Kevin and Lol. Maybe you could make a video like this about Bill Nelson? Or Todd Rundgren.
Thank you for the recommendations! I was thinking of discussing Todd's first band or Utopia. But I don't know who Bill Nelson is! Looks like I have some research to do! Thank you!
You can start your search with a band in which he was the leader. Be bop deluxe. Bebop Deluxe. (Sometimes the Enter key finds a different spot in the name.)
I'M CARRYING!!!!!!!! READ!!
???
A much appreciated documentary! 👍
A much appreciated comment
Thank you so much for watching and leaving a thank you. The thank yous really keep me going as I often think what I'm doing is not as worthwhile as I'd like to believe
I've been a fan since their 10CC days and still love Goodbye Blue Sky. Its worth revisiting with its back to basics take on soul, rock & roll. For me, its standout tracks are Dont Set Fire To The One I Love, Big Bang, The Last Page Of History and the unjustly forgotten Desperate Times. ( I think Desperate Times is easily up there with Cry).
I should definitely give it some more listens, I'm sure it'll grow on me throughout the years. Thank you so much for sharing!
Sean gives excellent music reports
I hope so! I try very hard and am super proud of my video on G&C. Hopefully within a few days I'll release my video in Flo and Eddie and I hope people enjoy it!
Thank you so much for watching and leaving kind words!
I've been a Godley and Creme fan since they left 10cc, I bought Consequences when it came out and still love it, but L is brilliant album.
Yes. "L" is the masterpiece for sure. Thank you for watching and commenting!
The cat 😻
He's the boss! Thank you for watching!
this was AWESOME!! also, where'd ya get that 10CC/Beatles poster in the background, la?
ps.. I cant believe you didnt mention Kev's involvement with the reformed BEATLES on "Real Love" in '95!!! thats MEGA!
I thought about mentioning "Real Love" but because it was only Godley and it uses tons of old footage of The Beatles, I felt it wasn't as impressive as a lot of the other accomplishments. I likely should have at least thrown it into a passing sentence or something to show that even The Beatles appreciate his work though.
The Beatles poster was given to me when I was in Highschool and I thought it was hilarious to print 10cc's faces on some sticker paper for the background of this video. My friends Erik and Sarah helped print them out. You're the first one to mention it! Thanks!
Thank you for appreciating the video! I'm glad you enjoyed it! You can use it to tell your friends how cool these guys are! 😂
@@SeansMusicHunt only Im cool enough outta my mates to be into 10CC and especially Godley and Creme! haha
have you heard the version of Real Love with Kev on vocals?? The Beatles made him do it incase it leaked...
re: poster.. well, it just so happens I have a spare one.. I have an Erik (my best mate) but I need a Sarah.. ha!
@@SeansMusicHunt ps.. love the play on words in your user name.. 🤣🤣🤣
“Does getting into Zappa, mean getting out of zen?”
Love it so much! Stay tuned as I'm talking about Flo and Eddie soon and their time getting out of zen!
FYI "Frabjous day" (2:10) came from Lewis Carroll's Jabberwocky.
Sorry for my late reply. I learned about what you're talking about shortly after finishing filming my video and it somewhat bothered me when editing the video, but I still thought it was funny when I stumbled upon the word so I didn't want to correct it. Thank you very much, Oh what a lucky man, you are.
Correction: The brass on 'An Englishman in New York' was NOT played by Rico Rodriquez. That is Wiki misinformation. The musician was actually Norman 'Hurricane' Smith, former Beatles engineer, Pink Floyd producer and hitmaker in his own right ("Oh Babe, What Would You say?").
Very interesting, thank you for the correction! I really appreciate it and hope you enjoyed the rest of the video?
@@SeansMusicHunt Indeed I did! Another point that might be of interest regarding Zappa's 'Joe's Garage'. The 1973 10cc single 'Johnny, Don't Do It' concerned a young punk, Johnny Angel, who "stole a bike from Joe's Garage to prove that he was cool". Did Frank hear that song and subliminally store that name in the back of his mind for future use or, to use a line from G&C's 'Get Well Soon', "was it just coincidence; who knows?"
I love the pix you have in the background of G&C gurning. Class!
@@shame69 I always recognize "Joe's Garage" in that line from "Johnny, Don't Do it" as well. But never really thought much of it. Guess I assumed it was just a coincidence as well. Perhaps I never really considered if Zappa was a fan of 10cc..
sean i already watched this. need new content
hehe
Yeah, I'm working on it. Thanks Danny. Hope you're good
The McCartney song is called I’m carrying. Cool video
Thank you so very much for watching and commenting!
You mean Bill Sheperd...
I was only 3 years old and mum went on about hotlegs 10cc.she wanted fresh air for my mumma at her funeral. It never happened but i stood up try sing kevin godley voice.i was mums first child and got away with it
Thank you for the story! Glad you at least got to sing! Good job honoring her
Guess I'm taking to a rock purist here, but I think you're wrong about "Wedding Bells", it's why I am here at all. It is one thing for a couple of rock guys to perform R&B Soul, but Smokey Robinson and motown at their peak could have done NO better. Godley's voice is made for this kind of music.
Hi there! Thank you very much for watching my video and sharing thoughts with me! I don't deny that it is an excellent track. Just for me, I seek more unusual music which is what draws me to this band and I feel "Wedding Bells" is a great, but more typical sounding song than what I'm searching for. I do enjoy some soul now and then, but it wasn't what I wanted from the guys that gave me tracks like "Une Nuit a Paris" or "Sandwiches of You."
Where did you get the Gizmo from? I’ve been trying to find one for ages. Musically some of the most creative and wittiest pop songs ever, highly underrated.
The gizmo 2 is at gizmotron.com
Easy enough! Thank you for watching and commenting!
@@SeansMusicHunt thanks so much, I had no idea they were making them again. 10CC were the first band I saw live as a teenager. They’d just released The Original Soundtrack and hearing I’m Not in Love through a big PA system was phenomenal! The whole gig was brilliant.
I can only imagine. I hope you end up getting the gizmo. It's finicky still, but really fun to experiment with. I used it instead of synth on some of my background music on this video
where is meanwhile (1992) reference
I mentioned it in my other video about 10cc but I could have mentioned it again I suppose.
Always amusing to see someone defend (insofar as that's possible) that mess of a triple-album. Presumably they made a point of hiring Peter Cook rather than Spike Milligan (the malaproper responsible for the phrase "the disastrous Quincyquonces").
Goodbye Blue Sky is the outline of what could have been their best "pop" album - the Creme of that particular crop - but of course they'd "gotten religion" (again) so it ends up far too Godley for my liking.
Personally, I'm into absurd ideas and creativity. I don't like pop albums after the 60s for the most part. But as I say in the video, I won't listen to the entirety of "Consequences" often and mostly listen to the highlights and the first side.
I very much appreciate you watching and commenting your thoughts!
@@SeansMusicHunt After listening to Freeze Frame again...a magazine once described G&C as Manchester's answer to Becker & Fagan, but a better comparison would either be the Mael Brothers or a Frankenstinian monster made from parts of Rundgren, Wilson and Zappa. (Btw since when did Greater Manchester extend as far as KG's launchpad of Stoke On Trent?!]
What's causing the humm?
I don't remember exactly.. I believe there was some unexpected microphone issue that I mostly deleted through premiere pro. I think I should have taken the entire Audio track into a DAW to remove the hum and then replace the track into my video project.
Thank you for watching and commenting! I hope you enjoyed it otherwise!
Excellent film, well done!
As it goes, King Crimson had already experimented with that morphing thing before Kev and Lol did Cry, with their video for Heartbeat - th-cam.com/video/ne5CJEP4hZQ/w-d-xo.html
:-)
I'm actually aware and wanted to mention it and felt a little sneaky by not doing so in the end... Honestly I should have, especially since King Crimson is one of my favorite bands.
Thank you very much for watching and sharing info/correcting me. King Crimson deserves credit for sure.
Not born in Lincolnshire , ………………….Lancashire England , At least get your script right .
Wow, an almost 30 minute video in which I spent tons of time making references to their music videos and stuff and you're upset because I don't pronounce a name properly of a place I've never even been close to. Great job! You sure showed me how bad I am at my job! 😂 Thank you for watching and leaving criticism!
