It is extremely baffling to me that the devs of both Marvel vs Capcom 2 AND Fighters Megamix decided to randomly add completely original sombrero-wearing green bean-like creatures to their crossover games for no fucking reason at all
Japan probably just really like sombreros. And who can blame them? (Funnily enough, of all the secret characters, Deku's weird self is the only one I forgot--I guess Hornet stood out more to me.)
Amingo's second cousin once removed. To be honest, I'm thrilled that the upcoming MvC collection will introduce Amingo to a new generation of players. I always loved that guy.
Side note: Aoi from VF is the only character that can counter every attack. She is the only one who can counter headbutts, back attacks, double fist/feet attacks, stomach attacks and full circulars attacks. She can even counter down attacks when she is on the ground.
I'm honestly surprised she didn't get included in DOA5 with the other VF characters that were included what with their countering mechanics, then again she'd probably be OP
@@Ramsey276one Yep. If you Knock Down Aoi and you go to do a down attack (everyone has this). Aoi can counter you. She pushes your attack away and she can get a guaranteed launcher. But it's risky. If you bait her out, she is left open for an stupid long time.
Thinking about it now, a modern game would have Yakuza and maybe even Persona chars, and that would guarantee good sales. Not exactly to match Smash numbers but still good enough to become a franchise with sequels and all.
Love these historical deep dives into games I've heard of but never played. The fact that they made the car playbale then thought "No, it's not crazy enough" and made the armor shedding mechanic is truly "wild balance." In these days where a new character takes 6 months or more to develop, you gotta love the 90's "yeah we did it in a week" secret characters.
Also in the 90s the whole vibe of the gaming culture and the game making conditions motivated companies to work on whatever crazy ideas they wanted. Everything was too new and just looked too excited, there were no strict guidelines or established concepts... everything was in progress, in formation. Also that whole atmosphere gives a feeling of devs who were having fun and expressing that with a nice and contagious sense of humor. Like, nobody in the whole company discarded the absurd ideas because of a preconception (that didnt exist back then but exists now) that a game must not push the level of ridiculous beyond a certain point.
But then if we bring the topic to our hardcore games, that level of freedom and sense of humor is what gave us things like: The peculiar humor of MK, that is m-rated, hyper violent, and yet it is goofy like a cartoon and clearly done that way on purpose. Also the definition of the "Capcom humor" that we see in the goofy animations of Darkstalkers, SFA/SF3, Jojo, Pocket Fighter (that would never had existed in another age). Also the idea that TK would use fighting animals, Mokujin, and all their stories and endings. Nowadays everything have to be more serious than in the 80s-90s. Not that everything became fully serious, but it's hard to deny that the sense of humor is exactly the same. I really miss the freedom and sense of humor of that age.
With exploding budgets and the push towards high fidelity and "realistic" visuals it gets harder and harder for creatives to justify wacky characters. Weird and out of place crossovers are a thing more than ever, but usually as paid DLC. It can be hard for true creativity to thrive in such a high-cost environment.
27:00 I'd like to add this factoid: An issue of EGM Magazine (I forgot the exact date--probably Spring or Mid 97' issues, I think. . .I HAD a copy of it) actually released that "censored" Candy portrait from the Japan version. It was a 2-fold spread page interior, the very same one, including TASTE OF HONEY tagline.
I've said it before and I'll say it again gosh darn it- Sega should make a modern version of 'fighters mega mix '. Can you imagine this game but with modern graphics, characters from an even wider scope of the sega universe and refined completely overhauled game play based on the most up to date virtua fighter engine ? That could be incredible. Actually , I'm surprised sega hasn't done this yet- that could be a massive hit. I'd play it!
The answer to KOF 94, featuring the same logic of converting characters from other genres to the fg form. That was one important idea created by SNK, that established a whole game design school in the history of the genre, that ended up giving us brilliant creations like MvC's Strider (easily the highlight of the Capcom side of MvC1). But this game maybe was too wacky for the time. It came before other wacky ideas like Pocket Fighter and Smash Bros.
Not wacky for Japan. MvC 1 or 2 had a Japanese version only character that was like a geeky gag celebrity, but in America they kept him out of the game. If you watch some 90s anime, there are scenes of the characters playing fighting games with kanji alone as the fighter avatars. One anime that comes to mind is Martian Successor Nadesico

Not related to secret characters per say but... The saturn port of Fighting Vipers 1 also had a hyper mode. And an arranged mode which basically makes it FV1.5 (additional moves and such). I think the Vipers' characters in Megamix are based off of the arranged versions. Potential combo vid maybe?
Before Smash Bros. we got Fighters Megamix and it's STILL awesome! Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Fighters Megamix come out before Virtua Fighter 3? Or maybe they were both developed at the same time. To me, Janet came before Aoi and so forth. But I could be wrong.

If you hit your opponent on a wall stage with a move that knocks them upwards (Bahn's DP is a good example) you can actually hang your opponent on top of the wall. Me and my cousins would always try to do this to each other playing this
To be honest, you are very careful in introducing the hidden characters this time. Among them, the coconut tree trigger condition requires several hours of play to use, and the little easter egg introduction of your most beautiful character is also very detailed. I also hope that one day Enough to play the remastered version of this game😄

This game deserves a modern remake & a revival. This is basically Sega very own King Of Fighters & it should've became it's own franchise
