Probably because "Hyper Speed" isn't a mechanic at all in fighting games. There are speed boosts, sure, but Hyper Armor is an actual fighting game mechanic used to describe when someone is permanently unaffected by hitstun. There's also Super Armor where they're unaffected by hitstun for a few hits but can be affected if hit enough times.

The mini-culture that sprung up around these characters were fun. Everyone kind of understood who certain recolors were supposed to be, but some people decided to refer to them with superlatives instead of their color. I think it was Ultra War Machine, Hyper Venom, and Proto Hulk.
I thought it was because Marvel had plans for Iron-Man on a different video game, but I like your explanation, too. Always wondered if anyone had the knowledge and expertise (and time) to do a palette (and name) swap to change WM back to Iron-Man on MVC1.
@@SayAhh I'm pretty sure it's because Iron Man was dead. Onslaught was one of those events where they would sort of reset the whole line or at least for a bunch of different titles. Of course, 'dead' is relative in Comics.
Really like the bits of trivia you threw in. I wouldve never thought that Gold War Machine could possibly have been a reference to something. Idk if its a for sure thing but its interesting to consider.
I'm not sure if it is a reference either but thought it would be interesting to include. I'm wary of explicitly saying 'x is definitely a reference to y' (which is why I didn't in that case) but at the same time it's still fun to have extra details like that I think.
Gold War Machine using missles instead of beams seems to have been carried over into MvC2 where Ironman is unchanged from his MSH moveset using beams but War Machine's Shoulder Cannon special and Proton Cannon super use missles (which seems to do better chip damage in general, and to Iceman inparticular who is immune to chip damage from beams)
There were some slight changes to Ironman in mvc2. Ironman uses the move unibeam which shoots from his chest, instead of shoulder cannon, his Proton Cannon super move activates faster, and he doesn't have the War Destroyer super move.
@@Vidya-James you're right, I got mixed up. After watching this video I still didn't realize it was war machine in mvc1, and didn't see you mentioned iron man from MSH. Disregard my comment, I'm an idiot.
@@robertwatson6559 Not your fault. War Machine has a slightly different armor design to Ironman's, but Capcom being Capcom, they just changed Ironman's suit to War Machine's colors and called it a day.
You're missing these Desk: - Red Venom literally has Hyper Speed but literally recieves more damage with just a few hit combos or one Hyper Combo than the entire MVC1 roster. - Orange Hulk has slightly better attack speed and movement than that of Hulk. - In the arcade version of MVC1, Onslaught's Psionic Puppet can call only one of 6 fighters at random: Ryu, Chun-Li, Zangief, Venom, War Machine and Hulk.
“Onslaught’s Psionic Puppet can only summon SF characters + Venom, WM & Hulk” (paraphrased) …if that’s true, that actually explains the Marvel secret characters.
"With the help of regular Venom he can actually crash the game." Now that's what I call team synergy. Orange (Red) Venom was always my favorite of these. The afterimages and strange pumpkin palette made him look weirdly menacing.
I don't think the blue color in MVC3 is intended to represent the Gold War Machine alt, it's a reference to the Stealth Armor. I don't think Gold War Machine's alt was supposed to be Stealth Armor but I could be wrong.

I'd love to see some coverage on Ryu's form change/form change combos or maybe a video focusing on the lesser used assists
Actually the Golden War Machine makes reference to Iron-Man's Psionic Armour that uses in the final battle against onslaught, that is also almost all gold colored
If someone wonders what are the methods to unlock the characters (In the PS1 version) they would be the following In general, they all have in common that you must pass the arcade mode with the characters Gold War Machine: With War Machine Hyper Venom (Or as I call him Carnage): With Venom Lilith: With Morrigan Roll: With Megaman Shadow Lady: With Chun Li Orange Hulk: With Hulk Onslaught: With Wolverine
I love these secret character breakdowns! And tremendous music choice for this video! I always loved this set of secret characters, because they aren't just simply palette swaps.
I believe Orange Hulk is also a reference to his villain, Madman who is often colored orange or red and shares the same radioactive origin except Madman can grow any part of his body's musculature to match the Hulk instead of getting stronger as he gets angrier like Hulk.
I love the trivia bits that you put in this video more trivia in future videos please. Have been following and enjoying every single video you've made thus far! Can't wait to see the next one. And the combos are ALWAYS incredible!
About Roll, her name is the same as the Japanesse version, but Megaman in Japan is Rockman, so in japan they are referenced as "Rock and Roll" on the Nes game manual
I actually didn't know about this gem back in the day. I've put my hands in XvSF for the PS1, and after having that awful xp with the loading times, I totally ditched anything about the next iteration. Bites me why it wasn't already introduced in MvC1.
Those alt pallets aren't a reference to GWM, their actually Iron Man’s actual suits, Midas & Stealth Armor. With Onslaught, you should have mentioned he is Magento’s mind & Xaiver fused, which is why he has a similar moveset to Magento. Orange Hulk is powered by “Solar Rays” With Shadow Lady, its strange that you mentioned her in SFV first “than” in MVC3. Also the fact that you mention she has a infinite combo in all three games despite her MvC3 version isnt actually Shadow Lady, its Chun-Li. Lilith that appears in Morrigan’s animations will also be swap with Morrigan’s color scheme. Nitpicking thou, I’m not sure why Lilith-Morrigan went with purple spandex and sleeves instead of baby blue but Lilith uses Morrigan’s correct color pallet. Also all 5 swap characters are henchmen of Onslaught. Only the 3 Marvel swap characters don’t have a actual ending and get a generic “congratulation”
Small correction: UMVC3 came out years before SFV, so Shadow Lady was a costume first AND THEN an unplayable boss. Not the other way around like the video states.

I do enjoy these videos you've been doing about the secret characters in games though I wish there was a little more information in this one about some of the differences between them and their original counterparts gameplay wise. For example, you bring up Orange Hulk's difference in that he doesn't have super armor like Hulk does but nothing else. For someone who may be unfamiliar with the game they may have an impression that's the only difference gameplay wise.
Remember when these games you could unlock characters by playing the game? Now, it’s how much extra money are you willing to spend. Those were some amazing days.
Fun side note: I got the Dreamcast version of this game for Christmas back in 1999. I felt that was appropriate to share, considering it's the holiday season!
Really detailed work and impressive showcase of their moves! Have really enjoyed your breakdown videos! How much practice do you have to do for each character to nail their infinites and touch of death combos?
5:55 that’s so funny 😂 I don’t know why they didn’t just have the alt hulk be gray since that’s a pretty common alt color for him in the comics (ever his first appearance is gray)
Ok, so the thing about Orange Hulk is, before hebwas Green and before he was Grey, Stan Lee wanted the Hulk to be Orange, but since he had already made the Thing Orange, he had to resort to a different color, so he picked Grey. That's what this is a reference to.
The only original secret character was Roll, everyone else is just recolors with tweaked move sets. Kinda disappointing. It wouldn’t have took that much effort to add a few more frames of animation to the assist characters to make them playable.
Marvel VS Street Fighter is worse in that aspect. The only "unique" secret character was Shadow (and has awful start up animation unlike Charlie). Final Mission is an awesome Hyper Combo though...
I don't see enough comments about this but AMAZING JOB ON THE EDITING! That 0:58 transition was so slick. Great job! Adding in the Marvel comic lore was chef kiss too. Very good job.
I still find it funny that Roll is the only one of these (not counting Onslaught) that has an actual unique set of sprites instead of being a palette swap, and yet she’s the absolute WEAKEST character in the game
I used to be able to beat anyone in my local arcade with Ryu and spiderman, that was my best combo, but I also enjoyed using Jin, Strider, Wolverine, Morrigan and sometimes captain commando.
man.. thanks for the video - what a great nostalgia trip. MVC hasn't been as good since MVC1&2 (and since they nerfed venom so much). i miss this game.
I thought Onslaught was playable in the DC version as well, but I'm only going off of what I read; it's probably been almost 25 years since I played the first one for more than a handful of matches.
"With the help of Venom, Red Venom can actually crash the game." Red Venom and Venom duo confirmed for being too strong to the point they can beat the game, in ways more than one.
Red Venom also has different normal and special moves than regular Venom. Red Venom's medium and hard punches and kicks are the same as regular Venom's light and medium punches and kicks respectively, and Red Venom's punch and kick specials are respectively the same as regular Venom's hard punch and hard kick. In MvC2, where both Iron Man and War Machine are playable, they gave War Machine the missile-based special moves of Gold War Machine. (But Gold War Machine / MvC2 War Machine does have one beam attack - crouching strong punch, where Iron Man / regular War Machine fires a missile) MSH-style Hulk's Gamma Crush isn't on fire like regular Hulk's, instead being like, well, MSH. Also like MSH, it delivers all its damage in a single hit rather than a multi-hit combo, and I think the total damage is slightly higher because of that.
10:43 i used to like Lilith but *hated* how she got the *short side* by becoming an Antag Rival to Morrigan in the end. In that crossover PS3 game might add (Cross Edge) she's seen *teamed up* with Dimitri when she shows up. (u can recruit em if u can deduce the conditions u have to do in that game to get em to join as u face them twice anyway) in the MvC games since then, she's seen as a *vessel* to *Empower* Morrigan now due to that although she tried beating her as a Rival (play DarkStalkers 3 to know more on that) she sadly ended up getting a sourly harsh L & as punishment *was forced to returning* to Morrigan (as a Vessel) to *fuel her power* ever since. Lilith *has never made a comeback* since then. 😐
You guys have, by far, the best videos that I've ever seen.... The coolest, man. These were some of my favorite fighting games I grew up playing!!!! Thank you so much for this!!!
Would be good to know the differences stat/ability wise from the secret characters and the in game ones. Like is gold hulk faster than hulk? Or what is the difference between venom and orange/red venom? Speed? Less health?
Fun Fact that I’m both surprised and not surprised isn’t in the video: The actual Lilith makes an appearance in one of Morrigan’s win screens in the Japanese Arcade version of MVC1. Unfortunately for Lilith, this appearance features her as Morrigan’s prisoner hanging from a chain, and knowing Morrigan, she’s probably been subjected to some “unholy” treatment… What a Fun Fact, right?!

But now you have to purchase said characters. I miss the olden days
@@360_sonicfan8 it was a great part of the game, you either get the hidden character or you get stuck with a random char and good luck with that
Rose tinted glasses. These are cheap recolors with unbalanced movesets.
@@saynotop2w that's totally relevant to the point, yeah
@@saynotop2w good point.
I think some dlc nowadays are justifiable by licensing issues.
But having to pay a character from their own game is just bull
The mini-culture that sprung up around these characters were fun. Everyone kind of understood who certain recolors were supposed to be, but some people decided to refer to them with superlatives instead of their color. I think it was Ultra War Machine, Hyper Venom, and Proto Hulk.
The Onslaught story arc from that time is also why you have War Machine in the early crossover games and not Iron Man
I thought it was because Marvel had plans for Iron-Man on a different video game, but I like your explanation, too.
@@Kasaaz you are correct, tony died and war machine took over as ironman.
@@nexusgiga Not! Ironman! War Machine!
4:53 the box falling behind the camera effect, so much love put into these videos! Thanks!
@@robertwatson6559 War Machine had the Shoulder Cannon and War Destroyer in MvC1, Ironman never had those.
@@Vidya-James probably saved on resources
You're missing these Desk:
- Red Venom literally has Hyper Speed but literally recieves more damage with just a few hit combos or one Hyper Combo than the entire MVC1 roster.
“Onslaught’s Psionic Puppet can only summon SF characters + Venom, WM & Hulk” (paraphrased)
…if that’s true, that actually explains the Marvel secret characters.
Please relearn what “literally” means, and then relearn how to use the term correctly.
"Literally" lmao
Literally
@@ag4640 lol, your like the guy who comes up after a guy just got beat up and then kicks him in the face. You're doing God's work buddy!!
"With the help of regular Venom he can actually crash the game."
Now that's what I call team synergy.
Orange (Red) Venom was always my favorite of these. The afterimages and strange pumpkin palette made him look weirdly menacing.
The Marvel VS games always have such great looking combos.
Roll is an adorable joke character!
she is so cute
Bruh going from onslaught to roll gave me such whiplash
It still upsets me that Red Venom isn’t actually red
Yeah, that look more like orange than red
Calling him "red venom" is purely wishful thinking lol.
Like "I wish orange venom was red"
In the PSX version he has an alternate color scheme that makes him actually red, not sure about the other versions tho
@@SlimeBlueMSit is visually red. So it's normal to call it Red Venom. You're so fun at parties all the womans talk to you! 😂😂😂😂
I don't think the blue color in MVC3 is intended to represent the Gold War Machine alt, it's a reference to the Stealth Armor. I don't think Gold War Machine's alt was supposed to be Stealth Armor but I could be wrong.
Lilith has another Super move where she tosses a heart at the opponent and does a very interesting animation if it connects.
I believe that's (regular) Morrigan's Eternal Slumber, not Lilith's (feel free to correct me, though).
It's Eternal Slumber, but unlike Morrigan, Lilith's is *unblockable*
Was it that super that had MP, LK, Back, FP, MK? 😂
man..... the nostalgia hits different. i didnt even play it much, but id sit and watch the idle screen for a long time. loved it.
Combos + trivia + awesomeness.
I really enjoyed this video.
You are evolving.
With the MVC Classics Collection coming soon, I wonder if they'll keep the hidden characters in the game, *ESPECIALLY* Onslaught.
The website says certain special characters will be added! Confimed: Cyber akuma and roll.
@@grimdeth2197I want to Believe that they just mentioned Characters that were never intended to be playable, like Cyber Akuma, or Magneto in CotA, the MvC secret Characters were unlockable from the beginning. So I think they'll be part of this new collection
Not sure if they're unlockable or already unlocked from the beginning (Or maybe part of the secret Characters setting)
No Onslaught unfortunately. Everyone else though can be unlocked
You forgot to mention that the Orange Hulk brings an asteroid during the special attack, and the Normal Hulk just fire.
8:56 Most adorable win screen ever.
I love these vids! The creative combos, the bits of lore about the characters, the great editing. Great job desk!
rumour had it, when the game was 1st release, orange hunk meant to be referencing to "the thing" but without the name tag just like carnage
I always share this story I heard from a friend a long time ago about Red Venom
There was a dude who was putting in the code to play Red Venom back in an arcade in the 90s, unfortunately for him the guy who he was going up against knew what the code was and straight up punched the dude in the face for even thinking about picking Red Venom. Basically it was common knowledge how busted Red was and the lil dude picking him had no shame in trying to get the W for it. Unfortunately he got the W from wish and came packaged as an L
damn. sounds rough.
Worst part is I don't think he's remotely as busted as Gold War Machine
Tough guy must have felt proud of himself lol
@@DiseasedCows As he should, picking Red Venom might as well be robbing the other player of their 50 cents. Some kids had to make 1 or 2 dollars last and some punk wants to cheat you, fuck that.
@@RanmyakuIchi oh noooooo not your 50 cents :(
I don't remember how but I know in the PS version of MvC, If you play as megaman, there is a way you can get the magnetic shockwave as a super in place of Hyper Megaman
I think you just beat the game with him.
I've been following you for many years, since the dawn of youtube (you and Saurian Dash lol), and let me just say I'm so happy you released an MvC1 video.
I think MvC1 is fucking beautiful and 100% does not get the love and attention it deserves. Literally one patch away from perfection. The roster, presentation, stage, and sound design are 2nd to none.
Godlike. Please do more things like this if you have the time to lol. I'd love to see some coverage on Ryu's form change/form change combos or maybe a video focusing on the lesser used assists
Who's here after the Marvel vs Capcom collection announcement? ITS MAHVEL BABY!

Let's go! Payday!
One second into the video and Power Drift's OST comes out. I love this.
This is sooo nostalgic. The best mvc game of all time
Let's go! Payday!
I love the way you give context and information in your videos!
Actually the Golden War Machine makes reference to Iron-Man's Psionic Armour that uses in the final battle against onslaught, that is also almost all gold colored
1:21 when I read about this I decided to test it out on my PlayStation copy.
That was the hardest I laughed in some time
This video was fun and educational. I enjoyed learning about all the individual characters and the references / tid bits.
Shadow Lady taking the whole "step on me mommy" meme a little too serious if you ask me XD
If someone wonders what are the methods to unlock the characters (In the PS1 version) they would be the following
In general, they all have in common that you must pass the arcade mode with the characters
Gold War Machine: With War Machine
Hyper Venom (Or as I call him Carnage): With Venom
Lilith: With Morrigan
Roll: With Megaman
Shadow Lady: With Chun Li
Orange Hulk: With Hulk
Onslaught: With Wolverine
I'm just watching Red Venom and now my headcanon is that he's the inspiration behind Bedlam. One of the future Kings in Black in comics.
I love these secret character breakdowns! And tremendous music choice for this video!
I always loved this set of secret characters, because they aren't just simply palette swaps.
What music is this?
Unfortunately, I don't know what the track is called. It's pretty sweet though!
@@AlphaDog26 Its Like the Wind, from the game Power Drift.
I would've preferred Gold War Machine in Iron Man 3. As far as I know, Iron Patriot was another villainous alias for Norman Osborn
Really cool video! Also “Like the Wind” from Power Drift is a track I haven’t heard in AGES lol.
About Roll, her name is the same as the Japanesse version, but Megaman in Japan is Rockman, so in japan they are referenced as "Rock and Roll" on the Nes game manual
Just came back to say the thing: marvals back baby
I actually didn't know about this gem back in the day. I've put my hands in XvSF for the PS1, and after having that awful xp with the loading times, I totally ditched anything about the next iteration. Bites me why it wasn't already introduced in MvC1.
Those alt pallets aren't a reference to GWM, their actually Iron Man’s actual suits, Midas & Stealth Armor.
With Onslaught, you should have mentioned he is Magento’s mind & Xaiver fused, which is why he has a similar moveset to Magento.
Orange Hulk is powered by “Solar Rays”
With Shadow Lady, its strange that you mentioned her in SFV first “than” in MVC3.
I’m 34 take me back to when I was 7 🙏🏽 I have one brother that is 7 years older than me he is no longer with me.. thank you bro for all of the memories to the good ole days. We use to play this for hours.
I though Mafestio or the Palette Swap of Blackheart was one of the Secret Characters. I didn't even know Onslaught was playable.
Blackheart isn't in MvC1. His secret Mephisto variant is in MSHvSF
@@The_Meev I thought he was for some reason. I truly didn't know Onslaught was a playable character in this game till now.
@@4n6 only in the PS1 version
@@The_Meev Oh thanks for the info!!!
the guy who made marvel vs capcom was a huge chun li's fan XD look ate that abomination
Nightcrawler not being a playable character will always be a crime in my eyes.
You didnt even mention the CANON STORY reason why lilith is just a palette swap of Morrigan in this game.
what does war machine say before he does his proton cannon move??
"Here's my Sunday best!"
Fun side note: I got the Dreamcast version of this game for Christmas back in 1999. I felt that was appropriate to share, considering it's the holiday season!
Really detailed work and impressive showcase of their moves! Have really enjoyed your breakdown videos! How much practice do you have to do for each character to nail their infinites and touch of death combos?
i love how tatsunoko vs capcom had OG Roll skin.
5:55 that’s so funny 😂
I don’t know why they didn’t just have the alt hulk be gray since that’s a pretty common alt color for him in the comics (ever his first appearance is gray)
That's vanilla Hulk's P2 color.
There's speculation that Orange Hulk is supposed to be Thing.
@@penismightier9278 if they gave him blue pants I could see it
30yrs Later the visuals are still phenomenal! 😎👌 One of the Greatest games ever made.
You forgot about Gold War Machine...
His gold version was incorporated in MvC2 with all his moveset, as the true War Machine.
And onslaught
Marvel VS Street Fighter is worse in that aspect. The only "unique" secret character was Shadow (and has awful start up animation unlike Charlie).
Final Mission is an awesome Hyper Combo though...
Do you really believe it's just adding a few frames???
"It wouldn’t have took that much effort to add a few more frames of animation to the assist characters to make them playable."
_Please be trolling._
I don't see enough comments about this but AMAZING JOB ON THE EDITING! That 0:58 transition was so slick. Great job! Adding in the Marvel comic lore was chef kiss too. Very good job.
I wish marvel vs Capcom had all the characters of MvC 2 and 3 but the same aesthetic, stages and music of the first one.
Kind of wish they added new characters for the home releases like they did for SFA3. Maybe put in the actual Lilith with her own moves.
The blue Ironman in MVC3 is actually a reference to the stealth suit he had in the comics
3:25 yo onslaught? That’s kinda sick. Sick design
I still find it funny that Roll is the only one of these (not counting Onslaught) that has an actual unique set of sprites instead of being a palette swap, and yet she’s the absolute WEAKEST character in the game
The blue armor for Iron Man in UMvC3 could be a double entendre. His blue armor in UMvC3 is also a reference to his stealth armor in the comics
I used to be able to beat anyone in my local arcade with Ryu and spiderman, that was my best combo, but I also enjoyed using Jin, Strider, Wolverine, Morrigan and sometimes captain commando.
Nothing in the comments about the musical genius that is this track?? Dude your skills are INSANE.
man.. thanks for the video - what a great nostalgia trip. MVC hasn't been as good since MVC1&2 (and since they nerfed venom so much). i miss this game.
1:15 I think the blue color swap in UMVC3 is actually a reference to Iron Man's stealth suit in the comics. Could be wrong tho!
3:47 Kids back then were definitely caving in arcade cabinets trying to beat this with 50 cents 😂
Is that music from Power Drift by Sega at the start? Edit: Dunno why I'm asking, it definitely is, I recognise it.
I thought Onslaught was playable in the DC version as well, but I'm only going off of what I read; it's probably been almost 25 years since I played the first one for more than a handful of matches.
shadow lady was hands down the most overpowered character in marvel vs capcom (ps1)
amazingly edited! This whole video had me hoooked
4:47 that gambit combo was nasty 🤮
It just clicked for me how rhythmic some of those long combos sound in games from this era 🤔😂
"With the help of Venom, Red Venom can actually crash the game."
Red Venom and Venom duo confirmed for being too strong to the point they can beat the game, in ways more than one.
The Power Drift soundtrack goes hard
Red Venom also has different normal and special moves than regular Venom. Red Venom's medium and hard punches and kicks are the same as regular Venom's light and medium punches and kicks respectively, and Red Venom's punch and kick specials are respectively the same as regular Venom's hard punch and hard kick.
In MvC2, where both Iron Man and War Machine are playable, they gave War Machine the missile-based special moves of Gold War Machine. (But Gold War Machine / MvC2 War Machine does have one beam attack - crouching strong punch, where Iron Man / regular War Machine fires a missile)
MSH-style Hulk's Gamma Crush isn't on fire like regular Hulk's, instead being like, well, MSH. Also like MSH, it delivers all its damage in a single hit rather than a multi-hit combo, and I think the total damage is slightly higher because of that.
I always loved how Megaman & Roll have Supers that reference Mazinger Z
9:26 the umvc3 skin absolutely came before SFV, SFV wasnt even *out* when UMVC3 happened, we hadnt even gotten Ultra Street Fighter 4 yet lmao.

Fun Fact that I’m both surprised and not surprised isn’t in the video: The actual Lilith makes an appearance in one of Morrigan’s win screens in the Japanese Arcade version of MVC1. Unfortunately for Lilith, this appearance features her as Morrigan’s prisoner hanging from a chain, and knowing Morrigan, she’s probably been subjected to some “unholy” treatment…
What a Fun Fact, right?!
3:02 Something about the game crashing as soon as the web covers the whole screen is weirdly hilarious
