Mr M: Marius Roberts delivers the Volkswagen V6 Amarok

  • Volkswagen's Amarok turned the pickup (bakkie - South African term) on its head when it first came to market in 2010 with its upmarket interiors and car like ride quality.
But more impressive was introducing safety features like off road ABS and vehicle stability control - unheard of then in the segment.
Here in South Africa, our consumers couldn't get their heads around a small diesel engine for a workhorse so it has never done the sales volumes it deserves. Yet now, all those who were abusing the Amarok then, are boasting about their 2.0l 10 speed transmissions today...what a fickle bunch.
Anyway, for me it remains the benchmark and whether you are a fan or not, there is no denying the Hilux's and Ranger's of today were spurred on by what VW brought to market.
And then they head the other way, slapping in the groups 3.0l V6 TDi engine into it...
Bizarre that its taken me so long to test but I have only heard good things.

I own a 2.0 Amarok Highline, quit popular here in Jamaica.I wouldn’t buy anything else apart from V6 version. They are quiet inside, comfortable, solid, drive handle and feel like you’re drive a car or vehicle smaller than it size. Very good fuel economy. Handle rough road real well comfortable, no bouncing around and suspension front end part are very durable. Engine is quiet, for some people they are not able to tell it is diesel.
For price, these are premium quality vehicles, you pay for what you get. As he said don’t know how more of these vehicles aren’t sold.
Don’t know, but hope Ford version will be able to live up to this model.

Thanks for the super cool message!!! Will see what I can do but as you know, the brand isn't in the greatest space right now globally but especially in South Africa. The dealer group that I have been getting cars from for review down here in PE have taken over Fiat / Jeep so lets see what I can arrange!

Brilliant vehicles just get smashed on sales here in SA where its the Hilux vs Ranger war yet none of them come close!
      Good choice

Amarok is head and shoulders the best Ute/Bakkie period. Others might offer more tech and extras but the Amarok is just pure quality all round. No amount of airbags can make up for lack of quality and refinement.

3.5 tonnes towing instead of what you mentioned though

    • @MariusRobertsProductions
      @MariusRobertsProductions  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I am an idiot - thanks for picking up on that! Our capacities are slightly less than in Oz - the 2.8 tonne is for the 2.0TDi while the V6 in SA has a 3.2 tonne towing capacity!
Thanks for that and for the comments...much appreciated

Really nice bakkies the problem it is to expensive and the enterior is cheap feeling

That dude Agree on the price BUT all the latest double cabs are silly overpriced yet the consumers keep buying them. Disagree on the interior - it’s still the most upmarket of them all. I like clean interiors - the Ranger is too busy, too many buttons - but it’s a personal thing

A beautiful bakkie with a ugly price

Amarok hasn't had the runaway success that it "should have" because it's ridiculously over priced! They give you 'this' but you pay for 'that'
And when are we going to hear about the 190kW version that's supposed to be released in Q3 2020 - which has already been available in Australia since late 2018!
