  • The Volkswagen Amarok is one of the oldest dual-cab utes/bakkies/pickup trucks in the segment, but now with the option of an affordable V6 diesel engine, is it worth considering over a Ford Ranger or Toyota HiLux? Paul Maric reviews the 2021 Volkswagen Amarok V6 Sportline to see if you should still consider it!

Incredible ute, still has features and abilities the third generation utes still don't understand let alone caught up to. Is dated now, but most if not all owners hate the new utes out becuase they still drive and handle like something form the 1980s, Amarok owners are spoilt and will never know such a competent, capable and well built ute ever again. This is the first and last actual improvement on the ute game, back to the old ways when Ford release the next join effort.

I am so disappointed that they are polluting and “bastardising” the Amarok with the Ford Ranger. I think it is a huge mistake. The Amarok has always been far superior to all the utes. Ford stuffs up everything it touches. My daughter has a Ford Ranger Wildtrak and it is terrible! I would not touch it with a barge pole!
I only have a 4 banger, but it is still, the best 4WD I have ever owned! I will only own Amarok from now on. I hope to get a V6 next time. I doubt I will ever want one that has been tainted by Ford. I cannot see how they could improve on anything, especially given that they cannot get their own Rangers right, or anywhere near the current standard Amarok is.....
Volkswagen, pure Volkswagen is the best!

I probably don't need Low range 4wd these days so this High range would be fine. @@shawsie5780 unreliable Hilux? Must have been a diesel, Toyota hasn't made a reliable diesel engine in a long time...apart from the 4.5 turbo diesel V8 in the Land Cruiser, maybe. The petrol engines on the other hand can't be beat for reliability though, especially their V8s. Just keep it in mind, if you want a Toyota that will last you a very long time without any major issues, avoid the diesel engines at all costs. Go for the petrol engines, you won't regret it.

I have an Amarok but only the entry level with sports bars and a few extras. It’s fantastic - love it but it is looking a tad dated compared with the brand new models. Only done 20,000. It drives so smoothly-more like a car. Towing with the tub and big trailer chockers with fire wood is such a breeze even up hill on wet grass with OFF ROAD MODE SELECTED. The new Hilux looks pretty good though and what about the Triton though not sure about the Tritons front. Front of the Mazda BT50 looks heaps better. Q. Which is the best Ute? A. The next one! Nothing like the V6 diesel power though. I hope that the new Ranger/Amarok partnership still has the V6. Could be the one to buy next. Spoilt for choice!

@@ar12. this argument of active safety always come up but no one ever faults the 70 series for having literally nothing at all. My new hilux handles no where near as well as my Amarok did, something that is very important to a sense of and actual safety on the road. Between the two I would have thought that the hilux was the one that was designed 11 years ago. This video proves that the Amarok can handle (and my own did handle) anything I’m likely to throw at it off road. The only attributes Toyota really has going are resale value and supposed reliability (I say supposed as my stock vehicle is less than two months old and has been having electrical issues already). I guess if you’re buying a vehicle based on resale value alone, it won’t matter to you what you drive. Toyota keeps throwing out outdated technology and idiots (myself included) still buy them.

So, of the dualcab utes that are currently available in Australia, which one has the most knee, toe and head room (and preferably air-conditioning vents too) in the second row seats? And to save you some time, the Dodge Ram and the F250 are both well out of my price range and are far too big to fit in to my garage so don't bother recommending either of them.

I had owned various 4 and 6-cylinder cars over the years. Even though on paper the turbo 4 has more power you can't beat a 6 for low down torque. 1 power stroke every revolution just does not really do it for me. The overlap of a 6 makes a big difference.

Interesting you can lock the rear but effectively have a LSD in the centre (torsen) that you can’t lock. The torque is really good, but without low range to multiply it, it’s less than the competition. There is a lot to like. But unless you’re happy to add a transfer case, there is no simple mod path to make this a true off-roader. Okay for the worksite, nice to drive, good at the lights. But overall, hard pass from me.

@@karlsenden599 got a link to where this has been done my man. Also how did they organise the switching for the transfer. And who did the map for the gearbox after the transfer had been added? Did they have to change the ecu and wiring loom because of the cam bus wiring system? Sounds like it must of been done by a very impressive workshop to overcome all this because just adding fog lights to a car with cam bud wiring systems can be a huge headache. Also the rear of the gearbox’s where the transfer bolts to is a different shape between the auto and manual. Is there an adapter plate? How did they overcome the different spline sizes?

It's very dated now in terms of safety technology - there are no rear airbags still, there's no AEB, no blind spot monitoring, no stop/start and no EPAS.
That's not being critical of the vehicle, it's still great to drive, it's more that Volkswagen hasn't invested in the platform. The next change to this car will come when it shares a platform with the Ranger in the next two years.
