    The gear lever on a modern auto is only a switch lever sending signals to an ECU; all the manual work is done by solenoids and servos. So, you can't wear out the gearbox dodad thingamijig flange by holding the gear lever switch.

    I have to say. Having spent a considerable amount of my upbringing in Africa where the roads weren't so great, these are everyday cars and they make alot of sense. But in Britain, they are an odd car to own unless you need a workhorse. The running costs thanks to fuel prices aren't great whereas in Africa it's not unheard of to get diesel at just over 80p per litre if not cheaper.

    Bit of additional info... all the v6 engines in these are mechanically identical, they just run different maps. So buy any power level v6 and get a simple remap from somewhere like darkside, and you’ll have 300bhp. If you look hard enough you can find these with rear lockers. Worth having.

    This Amorok is the only pickup truck I’d swap my 63 reg 2013 VW Touareg for. Oh! They’re not real leather seats btw, they’re pleather but still very good and comfortable. I’d gladly take one of these over any other pickup truck, Ford Ranger included. Good review Matt. 👍

      Hi. I’m really pleased with it. Had it 5 years this January coming and so far so good. If you stick to the service schedule without fail then it’s money well spent. I take it to a VW Specialist who are really good, much better than the main VW dealer and a whole lot cheaper too. I don’t like tempting fait but my Touareg hasn’t missed a beat. It’s flown through every MOT too. They can be economical in the long run if you don’t put the hammer down. I can usually get around 36/38 MPG and around 550 miles on a tank full. When I bought it it had 19000 miles on the clock and now I’ve got 54422 miles on the clock. The only thing that’s let me down is the panoramic sunroof, cost £900 to put right. No issues with DPF etc. loads of good reviews on this model, V6 R-line TDI 242BHP with great relentless power when needed.

    Owned a hilux before getting the Amarok, comfiest pick up by far (mine was loaded down so wasn’t as twitchy). I had a 224 bhp which always returned 30-32 mpg and 35-36 on long journeys. Only downside was replacing the tyres every 20k compared to the Hilux (33k) and keeping it within the speed limit on motorways 😳

  • @jimmyjames418
    @jimmyjames418 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    The last Amarok I saw, had just come back from a service. In the night, the Amarok caught alight because of a fuel leak. The house it was parked next too, burned to the ground, fortunately, the family got out thanks to a decent fire alarm system. Volkswagen of Dover, Kent, were the last 'people' to touch it. Apparently, the leaking fuel system was a well known fault - wow, some 'fault'.

    My main gripe with the Amarok is that it's built in that bastion of quality vehicle manufacturing, Argentina. Which means the build quality is at best shaky. I have less of an issue with buying a ute made in Argentina than I do with paying made in Germany prices for the same ute. A friend who runs his own electrical contracting business bought a brand new Amarok last year, and the rear door handle came off in his hand the day he got it home. The following day the rear courtesy light fell out. It's had a CEL on the dash for 2 months that VW keep resetting but not actually fixing, and Apple Carplay works as and when it feels like it. By comparison, my 2020 Mitsubishi Triton (L200 in the UK) hasn't had so much as an oil top up despite doing about 40000kms more.

    • @highlandmalt6368
      @highlandmalt6368 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Can't comment on your region, which I'm guessing is Australia. But they are made in Hanover, Germany for the UK market and I've found build to be extremely good, and in line with what I expect from VW group vehicles. The only fault on the 2 of them I've had (2027 & 2018 models) is a NOX sensor failure at 45,000 miles, which was sorted under warranty.

    • @themancuniancandidate2744
      @themancuniancandidate2744 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@highlandmalt6368 Yes, we don't tend to get the same vehicles as Europe, which makes the ridiculous prices we pay for German cars even more of a joke. Our BMW 3 series and Merc C class cars are built in South Africa. Our Audi A4s are built in China and India. Yet we pay way more (usually 30-40% more) for them than you pay for the equivalent German-built cars sold in Europe.

      Theyre quite popular here in Australia, enough that theres a good selection of offroad mods. I’m still driving around in a (mildly lifted and modded) 2011 and its been pretty much faultless… and that includes several long outback trips and proper four wheel driving. Id only get rid of it to get a newer V6 model

It is lousy when you need a VW dealer and the closest one is 900km each way. I have the fancy "sports bar" and it is the dumbest idea for a tray addition. We have a 2016 Ford Ranger at work and I hate the thing. It is crude and uncomfortable to drive with bouncy suspension. It is hard work to load anything into the back of it because of the load floor height and limited space. It has 4 wheel drive but we have absolutely no need to go off road. The 4 wheel drive lacks a limited slip diff so it is hopeless on tarmac but we never need to go offroad anyway so all that extra hardware is essentially useless ballast. However, that problem is rather academic as the hire contract it is on, would you believe, actually forbids us from taking it off road.

    7:33 You simply don"t buy one of those to crash and the NCAP is overrated, since there has been an increasing amount of unrelated stuff to occupant safety added over the years.

    Petty Moan time, get that air freshener off the mirror! Back in mature mode, why would you use the dash to store anything when reflections cut visibility.?
    I looked forward to this test and wasn’t disappointed, but £35k for a 68 plate would get you a top of range Musso all bells and whistles 7 yr warrantee…. Mmm my gran was Scottish so it would take a lot to convince me. For 8yrs I owned a w reg Jimny that I drove all summer in the Hebrides as a mobile tool box, returning the NE for winter… bounce doesn’t cut it when you’ve had a Jimny!

    Hilux is still king of the crop! In 15 years time the Hilux will still be running on its original engine, timing chain and gearbox where the Amarok will have had several mechanical overhauls.

      @@rambleon3698 Loads of them still on the roads now because Toyota keep their vehicles simple with older fashioned technology because that’s what lasts!

    Pick ups just don't work here in the UK; they are as useful as an ashtray on a motorbike, especially having those load area covers. Just buy a Ford Transit already.

    I hate them too - the Nissan Navarra I once had as a company vehicle was pants - you could see the con they were trying to pull. The one I had was the lot - leather + air + sunroof +reversing camera + excellent sound system + nav and automatic. But as you say it drove like something out of the 1940's the rear seats were almost vertical with no legroom so how they think 3 builders are gonna travel from Carlisle to Cardiff back there to arrive and be fit to do a days work without a massage first.
    Thing is of course with the rise of the self employed "sell" them this "luxury" car to replace their Merc or BMW saloon and it had loads of tax advantages and you can get rid of the works van............ lots of money for a totally inadequate vehicle.

      I have a D40 Navara (3L V6 Outlaw) I don't hate it - only time the ride bothers me is if it is cold around 3C or so and lower it gets kind of ungainly and feels like each corner is trying to do its own thing and if you get stuck behind slow moving traffic it feels like you are climbing in and out of every pothole :( get out on the motorway and a good cruising speed it really isn't bad at all. End of the day the ride is what it is as it has leaf springs on the back.
      I'm assuming yours was a king cab as the dual cabs like mine have plenty of rear leg room and though the rear bench seat isn't the most comfortable it is reasonable as bench seats go.
      The only thing which bothers me is the chassis corrosion and sadly Nissan hasn't gone to any extra lengths to improve on that situation with the new models which IMO any company who really cared about their image would have done.

    We have two 68 plate 3.0 V6 diesels. One is sat in Martin's VW awaiting a new engine as VW are disputing the warranty claim as it didn't have its first service before the fault developed. The second was repaired under warranty having had its first service, yet another new engine. So what was the fault, basically failed DPF regen cycles on both vehicles caused the injector seals to break and leak diesel into the oil. Not impressed by these and don't count on the VW warranty. Two sister vehicles, one they repaired the other we are forking out 6800 for to get it back on the road.

    Matt your review & explanation of the "Anorak" sums up buyers of this particular SUV (it's not a genuine p-u) and the VW brand in general. Style over substance.
    A pick-up without a low box, a flakey build quality and ponsey rear coil springs is just a pap for road users not serious buyers and as for using bolts not studs to hold on the wheels try changing a tyre in the rough and getting the wheel seated.
    Along with Merc's Navarra rebadge, VAG have realised their own offering is poor and have dumped it in favour of the new Ragnorok.
