We drive the Mitsubishi Triton GLX Plus and see what this ute is like to drive.
The Mitsubishi Triton is a durable and good-value alternative to more popular utes like the Toyota HiLux and Ford Ranger. Does the Triton deserve more attention? After a comprehensive facelift, it’s now a better looking vehicle, and there is no denying that it is much more affordable than most rivals - and it has a ten year warranty.

I own a 2020 GLS auto, it’s done 17,000kms already, and I’m really happy with it. Great on fuel, tows great.
Best ute out there hands down in my opinion... one MASSIVE advantage that no one talks about is the super active 4wd systems lets you run the car in AWD on sealed roads... makes the car insanely more safer and stable on wet roads, gravel roads etc.
Yes tend to agree, I still drive a awd v8 holden adventra, if they (4x4utes) all did this I'd think allot more about upgrading, but the ride quality on my 17yr old commodore beast is just too good for what it is and cost. I've driven the new Triton, boss has one and it's growing on me. Seeing them everywhere now.
It's only available on the higher spec Triton's - GLS and above. The base models don't get AWD.

@@kevinjones8496 GLX+ doesn’t have the ability to switch to AWD with centre diff unlocked. It has a rear diff lock though if that’s what you’re thinking.
The AWD ability is only available with Super Select which starts at the GLS model.
Still a GLS will run about $53k onroad depending on extras. That's an insane amount of value compared to the competition.
Iv had my 2021 Triton GLS for about 2 months. I cant flaw it, amazing in pretty tough off road situations, economical on road and very comfortable inside.

I've got a 2019 mitsubishi triton gls and I am extremely happy with the car it handles and drives well It's great on fuel and tows great.

This GLX+ model cannot be driven in 4W high on bitumen as it uses the more basic Easy Select transmission. To get that awesome AWD feature you need to go to the GLS model that has the Super Select 11 transmission. Definitely worth it if you can stretch to that financially.

Great review mate. I usually mute the reviews and Observe the interior and exterior, but you are very straight to the point. I bought the same triton, apart for the bull bar. Honestly it's great.
For all the off road drivers, the ute comes with, factory, front diff, transfer case and transmission breathers. So you only need the rear diff breather. Note: don't buy the Mitsubishi snorkels. Waste of money.

Triton is meant to be a workhorse, they use the KISS principle and hence its reliability.
If and when it breaks down, it is simple to repair compared to other brands. All the bells and whistles reduce reliability especially on a commercial vehicle that a tradesman depends on. Excellent commercial vehicle

Bought a 2019 runout driveaway for $31990.Added the guff for towing a Kedron van,plus the obligatory front bar (MCC rocker,spotties).All up accessories with $46000.It is fit for purpose, it won't climb the Bungles and is a killer beach driving! Best buy!

Tritons are really good once you hit the GLS range that has rear locker and super select.
They are their own car. They aren’t a ‘budget’ version of other utes. They’re a serious competitor

Get GLS range with super select 4wd which is unique tech only for Mitsubishi, I am not worry about too much for the tub set up, will need to remove get tray anyway.

i have the 2019 gls plus premium i really love this ute, i've driven most its competitors even higher spec and i still prefer the triton, only two gripes i have is no digital speedo as mentioned in video and no active cruise control for them longer trips

I think one thing to consider before buying the Triton is the wheelbase; which is shorter than its rivals. This comes with it's own set of advantages and disadvantages. It may make it easier to maneuver around town but you have to contend with the long rear overhangs. So when carrying heavier items, much of the weight will be behind the rear axles. If you look at the rear doors you'll notice they are at an angle to accommodate the intruding rear wheel arches.
While the short wheel base is not ideal for clearance, there's nothing wrong with it's load carrying ability. It handles load just as well as others. In indonesia, malaysia, philippines these things carry 1.5-2.0 tons on a regular basis off road and never bend their chassis cause mitsubishi has strengthened the chassis since the mn days and continually improved through the mq life cycle. Clearance wise, once you drive to suit the vehicles dimensions it won't be a huge hindrance.
@@anthonyramdin1037 This is both correct and incorrect. Chassis strengthening will only go so far, I've seen 79 series that were overloaded too far in the rear and bent the chassis, it's a problem that lies in driver's failure to properly distribute weight.
In terms of putting trays on, warranty will be voided at any tray longer than 1650 mounted, which can be an issue for some tradies who need the full standard 1800 tray, however usually it works out just fine.
This is the current Triton's Achilles heel, great for 4WD'ing, reasonable for load but a real negative for heavier towing due to the greater leverage placed on a longer distance to rear from Tritons shorter wheelbase.
This is an issue and there have been a number of bent chassis from slide on campers on the earlier Triton that I believe Mitsibishi attempted to deal with by strengthen the chassis in the rear axle area.
Having said that this has happened to other brands however the Triton IMO is more likely to suffer this.
The new as yet unreleased in Oz has a longer wheelbase for a reason.
However this can also be user error not recognising the greater rear leverage on the shorter wheelbase Triton.
In 3 years I go on my LSL grand fishing tour and I'll 'ute' and the Triton is my #1 choice.
Most people I know who have 4WD for years pick the Triton as their #1, 2 or 3 option.

Love my Triton, watch the 4wd-24-7 torture test to see how this car stacks up against its competitors. Accurate review by this guy tho, you won't be blown away by the Triton, but it gets the job done at a good price and won't let you down.
No ute blows anyone away for that matter, but the triton does everything great whereas others do well in some areas and poorly in others. Triton is the best all rounded

I wasn't Impressed with this review at all. I own a 2020 Triton GSR. I am sick of these so called reviewers ignoring the GSR top spec. My Triton shits all over every other Ute in its class.
i Drove a new Glx plus and found the seat very uncomfortable. is there a better seat upgrade or something, maybe airhawk seat addon?
I'm trying to make the decision between the GLX-R (which contrary to some comments here DOES have rear diff-lock according to the spec sheet), and the GLS which is $3600 more expensive. The GLS has centre diff-lock and the super select 4WD. Does the GLS have centre AND rear diff-locks?

Bought a Triton 6 months ago. triton seats are great comfort for long distance driving. Road noise is only thing I can complain about.

Fine for the money! 7 year warranty is great!!!! Depends what your after in a dual cab and what your going to do with it of course. I have a 70 dual cab for farm work, big cattle crate trailer, horse floats and tows with ease. Triton looks good but I’d bust it doing what I do........
You should probably mention that the GLX-R doesn't have a rear diff lock which the GLX+ does if you're going to recommend it.
I just bought a brand new GLS and they don't come standard with a Tray Liner. Nor do any of the range apparently.
I think 5he seats are very supportive and mine its a glx+ is very quiet compared to the isuzu.love mine very happy
if you just want a solid, reliable work ute that you can take to the tracks on the weekend you cant go wrong with a triton. My company swears by them

Great, no nonsense review, thanks. I'm looking at getting a new ute, currently driving a 2015(FEB) Hilux SR Dual Cab(alloy tray, last of the previous gen), if I go with the Triton GLS, besides personal preference, why the auto over the manual? Which is easier, less expensive to service etc?
You must have expected too much for a step up base variant and even compares it to plush interiors of the "better" but less reliable options(ehem Ford). Good review, just lessen nitpicking the things that are pretty normal for an almost base variant.
I bought the GLX club cab ADAS and absolutely love it. Its my second triton and will not own anything else. I disagree with some of your appraisals and I find my cab very quiet, amoungst other things.

I pick the same glx club cab tray back up in 3 weeks, I'm pretty sure I'll be very happy with it.
I then have a ironman bullbar to be fitted,
I just wish there was more photos or articles on line about them,
I still have to work out what size tyres I eventually up grade to, it comes with 16 inch ones of memory,
What you failed to mention is that the cooler, sportier GLXR model does NOT include a rear diff lock as standard whereas the GLX+ does. So if driving around town looking cool is your bag, the GLXR is a great choice. But if you want to actually go off-road with your new Triton, the GLX+ is a better option. If you want both, you’ll need to lash out on the GLS which starts at $47490.

Triton has 10 year 200k warranty and T60 has 3 year 130k warranty. Mitsubishi confidently back their product for longer
Have 2020 glxr. Been great ute. Drives well. Power to weight way better than rivals so nips along and good on gas. Far better ute round town than the ranger i had before this one.
I'd be worried if a 2020 model wasn't driving great at this stage.
These have a stigma that's not necessarily deserved. The previous model did however have woefully crap suspension and the drivers seat was terrible. Saying that tho near all of this type of ute has ordinary suspension and uncomfortable seats.
Is it worth spending 50% more for an SR5? Hard to see where the extra $25K goes actually.

@@tonys8243 That would be madness for a private buy, the tax and showroom depreciation doesn't make sense to do that. Buy it under an ACN and flog it at end of lease maybe. If your going to keep a FWD for a decade then wait 2 years and get one off lease for way less at auction.. In that case I would get the SR5 purely for it's artificially inflated resale value that pushes the price down at auction simply due company depreciation claims vs actual capital loss. I've had a few Mitsi things over the decades and for the best part, with the rare exception, I wouldn't recommend hanging on to them for a decade.

Flaming Hedgehog .. most of the people I know hold onto whatever vehicle they buy for 7 to 8 years + and several with a new bought vehicle 15+ years old so deprecation is no longer a factor.
Still nuts that "midsize " trucks run $30-$40k...especially since compact pickups arent even an option anymore.
For the extra $1K you say for the GLX-R you might get colour coded door handles and some chrome but if you do your homework and do a comparison the GLX+ has heavy duty rear leaf springs and a rear diff lock where the GLX-R doesnt.

I drive over 58000 km per year to work and back home for nearly four years now. I hit 6 kangaroos in the process. I traded my Isuzu Ute having reached 140k and recently my 2021 Ford Ranger due to eighty dollars for diesel of fuel cost per day. I drive on good roads to work (no unsealed roads) 160km per trip. What would you recommend for a vehicle that would run economical on fuel and strong enough to protect me when colliding with kangaroos? I am seriously considering the Mitsubishi Triton base model. I hope to hear from you.

2012 Nissan nirvara were a peace of crap with shit rigidity tubs. Hilux has always be a more sturdy rigid more comfortable ride. But for the price the triton looks good.
4wd 24 7 channel does the comparison, it's the best value very capable. Weakness is heavy towing due axle too far forward, for that buy an amrok

The 10-year "Dimond advantage" warranty only applies if the vehicle is serviced by a Mitsubishi dealership. Now I don't know about you but I am not paying dealership servicing prices on a vehicle for 10 years.
Ryan, keep in mind that the capped price servicing also runs the full 10 years also so not really as bad as it first seems. Only scheduled services need to he completed at dealership to maintain the warranty so any other repairs, damage etc could still be done elsewhere and maintain warranty anyway. I think it's a pretty fair deal, if you don't want to take them up on the offer you don't have do, it reverts to a warranty still equal to to competition anyway.
@@joelcolgate3683 It's still a bit dodgy in my opinion, being forced to take it back and pay the dealership a few hundred bucks every 12 months for the next 10 years to keep your warranty.
@@alexandersupertramp1293 Yes I know but that capped-price cost is $699 according to Mitsubishi's website on the Triton. I personally don't want to spend $699 every year on a basic service for the next decade.

Thank God at least there are car reviews. What Australians are screwed in is insurance. Officially there are number of companies to choose from but if one delves deep there are only three or four using various brands and names to con people. The direct power supplying this channel is one of them who looks at maximum benefit if you contribute to their annual income but never make a claim. At least I think they are slightly more forthright than the massive invasion from South Africa - a semi bankrupt country now so imagine them paying a whole lot of payouts!
Have they fixed the throttle lag?
I had a MQ GLS from new, nearly got T-boned a number of times because of it so I sold it with 15000km on the clock, my safety was more important than the lost money, the thing was a deathtrap

You've admitted there a fault by suggesting fitting a throttle controller, which 6 years down the track it still needs, this alone tells me there's an issue.
@@user-vy1zq9pg2n It's a small diesel engine that is not wound up very tight. To remove the throttle lag would require releasing the car with a higher level tune, therefore decreasing reliability. I agree with Michael in that not properly managing the throttle lag, of which's existence you were aware, is more a reflection on your failure to properly account for it.
It is quite easily fixed with a throttle controller or tune if no lag is something you need, however I find the throttle lag rather useful in extreme offroad situations where I can recover from a split second of actually putting my foot down too hard or too soft without having an effect on the performance
Fair point but both of you are making excuses for a fundemental fault with the vehicle, it's not as if it's an unreasonable expectation for a car to move when you accelerate off a standstill, no other popular make 4wd built in the last 6 years suffers this issue
@@user-vy1zq9pg2n and no other popular make (aside from Hilux’s as the only exception, and even then only in certain) has anywhere near the reliability the triton does BECAUSE the engine is not sound tight. It’s simple to get around a bf a useful feature for a lot people.
It’s a shame it wasn’t up to your standards but a tiny diesel only producing 133kw is never going to push a car along real fast.

what about when you have your phone plugged in and take a call the speaker is in the passenger area so the driver cant hear anything!!!
Both speakers are actually available for use, some vehicles get produced the wrong way (what do you expect, it's cheap Thai labour producing it) so if you take it to a Mitsubishi dealership you can actually get it changed over to the driver side, or vice versa.

@@sbruce4415 I used to be on the MQ Triton Facebook page, happened to probably 60-70 vehicles while I was on there.
Dealerships are super shit, you’ve got to actually specifically ask them to do that change and even then it’s not guaranteed.
My mum took her Pajero Sport to a dealership a few months ago for service and she explicitly asked for the wipers to be changed, they did not do that at all, didn’t even write it down.
Ive got an MQ and it comes out of the drivers side, always has, it’s really just shitty production that causes the problem.
You can go into the settings and change it to ‘left hand drive’ and it will come out the drivers side speaker. No doubt there’s a hack to get both going but I can’t be bothered looking into it further.

I own a pajero sport and ill tell you now the back seats in the triton is way more comfortable than the pajero sport.
I got my auto 2019 GLS brand new for 39k 😮😮 they’re dirt cheap and I’d recommend the triton to anyone

@@MrBENTPIN I’ve just got the basic white which is apparently the best one, some of the colours chip a lot easier I have seen people complain about paint on some of the colours but mines good only 1 maybe 2 stone chips on the whole Ute after 35,000kms

I'm seriously looking at the Triton in the GLS or GSR spec. I don't think the GLX versions of this ute have AWD as super select is only available in the GLS and up. You can't drive the GLX on road in 4wd.
Why are there no comparisons with the other cheap Ute's like the Musso, Great Walls and Trail riders?
I have the Toby price edition which is a gls with a few extras and love it 45k and no issues can't fault them
Pretty sure this model has the 'easy select' 4wd system and cannot be driven on the road in 4wd mode, it will damage the drive train. My 5 cents worth...pay the extra to get the models that come with the Super Select 4wd system, this system DOES allow an AWD type setting for the road and is a truly massive advantage that none of the competition offers. I have a Triton in GLS spec and leave it permanently in AWD mode and the added safety can't be underestimated, you definitely notice the added grip especially on loose surfaces when unladen.
I think the Amarok is full time AWD, my friends 2016 is anyway. But, the price...

Another great vehicle we CAN NOT get in the USA due to the “chicken tax”! Very annoying! If the US manufactures can’t compete now, maybe they need to start building better vehicles.
Glx-r is the sister version of the glx+. You lose the functionality of things like diff lock, heavy duty springs etc and are paying more because of bigger wheels, chrome and comfier upholstery. From everything this guy is saying, he'd prefer a comfy SUV over a functional 4x4 ute. Get the Glx+ and add bigger wheels if you really want them. Harder to get the Glx-r and add a diff locker...
I own a new GSR. Everything is great about it except three things: the worst version of roller tonneau I have ever seen whether because the local dealer is one of the worst and the fitters kept saying they have never fitted one before (already 2 screws dropped off the canopy unbeknown to me) and Triton really should have tuned the engine to produce a minimum of 140kW/$450Nm. The auto really struggles on hills, and despite a torque converter slow to start from a stand still. Even with leather the seats are not that supportive for the driver's thighs. Unless you fit a bull bar you lose the front camera which gets hidden under a nudge bar and if you fit a driving light bar it is perilously closer to the bottom of the front risking damage and loses the distance for which you installed it. Other than that very quiet, smooth and will tick most of the boxes and certainly value for money.
I put an idrive unit in mine, made throttle response and get up and go a million times better

I got my done only 1000 k model GLX+ and lots of problems with Idle when in parking goes up to900 from 600. Took it to dealer they said they fixed it but again same happens. Anyone else have this issue?

Yep my MQ work car does it and my own MR does it, though not as noticeable. Both since new. All cars do it when aircon is on but these seem to do a similar thing when the aircon off sometimes. Makes no difference to anything so just get over it. No long term effect to my work car after 40,000km.

Tritons are very cheap vehicles. Have an mn cab chassis petrol and want to upgrade, but cant trust it. Sure it carries huge loads well, but cheap plastics, terrible gear box..needs a proper 6 speed manual as the 5 speed iis hopeless. 4th and 5th is almost iidentical and the way it holds reves between gearshifts is appaling. 94kw is well under powered and the titanic has a better turning circle. Still better than a colarado though. Next will be a Hilux
Affordable yes, did you know they are prone to roll from side impacts, run a Getz into the side and watch it flip onto it's roof.

Of course, the other possibility you didn’t entertain is that the Triton is properly summed up as “meets expectations” and “sufficient”. There’s very little I’d call “perfect” or “right on” except the price, which got the credit it deserved. This is a classic mid-pack ute. You may not like it, but yes, a Ford Ranger is better. And Ford don’t need to pay me to say that, I just know, because I drive every ute on the market, so I can make the comparison with plenty of personal experience. Cheers!

Market share often has little to no correlation to how good a certain car is compared to rivals. Fleet deals, discounting, perceived reliability, availability of parts all contribute to the purchase decision. Mitsubishi need to put some serious dosh into R&D. You can't just rebadge deathtrap Renaults (Express) and facelift old cars forever. ASX, Outlander and Eclipse Cross are built on the same GS platform dating back to 2006 with the same wheelbase. Old engines and bland interiors. Several badges will have already released their next gen dual cabs before the new Triton is launched in 2022. Sales are down 30% in 2020. I'd be surprised if they're still selling cars in Australia in the next 5 years unless they start releasing proper next generation cars.

You seriously need to check your facts before doing a video. As of 2020 the GSR became to top spec Triton. Why not show a GSR. To be honest I was very disappointed with this review.

One of my worst 4x4 experience is in a 2019 triton, it was a friends, 4wd would not engage while stuck in mud, took ages to lock in, and when using the winch to get out it pulled the ARB bullbar about 1 inch forward bending the mounting bolts maybe ARB fault, and because the front quarter panels conect to to bullbar that also was pulled off and damaged it, what a day, buy a toyota
