    What use would you have for a functional wash copper in your garden?
    Compost storage?
    Washing vegetables?
    Thanks for watching!

      @TheFarmyardGarden I definitely would use if for storing my compost.

      Seems a great idea doesn’t it? The lid to keep pests out too ❤️

      im would keep my compost mix in it or use it for mixing up different compost mixes in

    • @1northcountrygirl
      @1northcountrygirl 16 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Agreed - use the pot to mix compost. I don’t know if you could heat it up with the fire below to sterilise compost you want to use indoors. The old sink could be used as a potting tray maybe.

    I understand why you feel bad but dont. it was just to thin. if you can find another wash bucket and its in good shape thats the answer. you did nothing wrong. love your channel

    • @TheFarmyardGarden
      @TheFarmyardGarden  16 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

      Thanks Robert. Pretty devastated as it was looking so good!
      I can really see it having a use, especially for a garden. Washing vegetables, storing compost in early spring for seed sowing.
      I really want a grate making and the wash copper needs to be operational to be able to light a fire.

      @TheFarmyardGarden could a friendly local welder make a patch?

      in my grandma,s house when i was a kid, before the council modernised the house, there was a wash boiler copper in the corner of the kitchen, she allways called it the set-pot, i remember her using it to make soup in during the winter, & because there was quite a lot of soup, the neighbour,s got some aswell, i,ve saw them for sale on ebay, when you type in, cast iron, the chimney also needs a new chimney pot, & a wire bird gaurd put in the top, the blacksmith could sort the grate out to light a fire, then get some bacon bone.s or a gammon joint. & make some broth, or some yellow split pea soup, or lentil soup, it would be lovely to see it boiling away, & the smell would be lovely too, good luck with it,

    • @TheFarmyardGarden
      @TheFarmyardGarden  14 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @ what a lovely memory. I can imagine the smell was lovely when it was boiling away.
      The chimney will be repointed when the weather warms up a touch. There’s some pointing that needs replacing in other places too, and yes, a bird and rain guard for the chimney is really needed too. All in the plans in due course 😍😍

    OMG, I am beside myself, I cant beleive you didnt clean that wood off first...🤣🤣🤣

    • @TheFarmyardGarden
      @TheFarmyardGarden  14 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      Duncan didn’t tell me he has a sander until it was finished! I’ve never seen that poor tool before, clearly left languishing in shame for not being a DeWalt. I’ll sand it when the taps have thawed so I can jet wash the algae off and let the wood dry.
      In my defence, making a lid for it was a last minute add on to the video after I broke the copper. There was going to be a whole lighting the fire and seasoning the cast iron again.. oops 🤣😅

    You never know how thin the metal is when it has been sitting under the rusting process for so long. Even if you had left it, it would have degraded anyway. Chin up, girl!

    • @TheFarmyardGarden
      @TheFarmyardGarden  15 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks Sylvie. I was surprised it has no holes in it, in the first place, especially as it was full of planter material from the vines which ingressed in to it
      I’m glad to have some options of a solution 😍

  • @DancingwithRoses-5
    @DancingwithRoses-5 15 วันที่ผ่านมา +7

    You still should get the wash bucket repaired and use it for a planter outside the wash house. It would be fitting. Love watching this process with you.

    • @TheFarmyardGarden
      @TheFarmyardGarden  15 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

      I think a planter would be great. It won’t need repairing then. A drain hole is handy 🥰🥰

  • @myrustygarden
    @myrustygarden 15 วันที่ผ่านมา +9

    Oh Clare 😢 you didn’t break it, time broke it. There is no way you could have known and there was nothing you could have done. And out of this issue a new pot has been found 👍👍. Looks cold there 🥶🥶, it’s sunny here today and 8c. Great job as always, Ali 🥶🌞🇨🇦

    • @TheFarmyardGarden
      @TheFarmyardGarden  15 วันที่ผ่านมา

      That’s a lovely way of putting it Ali. Thank you for saying that. 🤗🤗
      When I look back on the footage, I can see the pitted area where there is now a hole. 😭
      It’s fate to have found one. As soon as the weather picks up we’ll be going to collect it. Not worth the risk in the ice. Forecast to be warmer over the next few days, thankfully
      Hope it’s not too cold there. Stay warm xx

      How exciting!

  • @GardenofEmma

    It looks so cold there at the moment. You did nothing wrong with cleaning the copper bowl it was just too rusted but Facebook marketplace has all these little gems. Tip for your glasses. Wet your finger and wipe the inside of the glasses and it stops them misting up. Good old motorcycle visor tip. Give it a go. Lovely update Cant wait to see how the rest of the restoration goes.
    Loved seeing all your animal running around 🥰

    Oh no... there is a hole 🕳 in my bucket, oh Henry, oh Henry, there is a hole 🕳 ...
    It's a bummer that it happened, but it is so great that you found another one.
    I know it will look absolutely fab when the project is finished.
    My garden is still frozen solid and still has a sick frozen white blanket of icy snow ( South Yorkshire). They promised warmer weather for tomorrow, and hopefully, it will be gone soon. I'm so sick of it now. I want to get out there and put my hands into the soil.

    • @TheFarmyardGarden
      @TheFarmyardGarden  15 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I love that you say oh Henry.. we say dear Liza here.
      I’m so gutted about it but I’d rather know it was this weak before it was full of boiling water to drop all over my feet.
      It’s just a slight mishap, it will all workout in the end

    • @OdeInWessex

      You are both right, First it's Henry singing to 'dear Liza' the it's Liza singing 'then mend it dear Henry etc'. Oh and the third line is 'With what shall I mend it dear Liza' ...scintillating it's not 😂😂😂😂😂

    I can remember my Mum doing the washing in one of those, then she had to heave the wet sheets out to put them through the mangle. The copper has probably got thin through so much washing being done in it, so don't feel bad about the hole.

    • @TheFarmyardGarden
      @TheFarmyardGarden  13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thank you Trish. So many stories of people remembering using them. I love hearing all the tales.
      I imagine wash day was quite the chore.
      I do have access to a mangle I can collect to restore too. Might leave that to someone more qualified than me to do though 😬

  • @RobinGardens

    How cool that you found a wash basin so quickly and in such great shape too. Fab price too. Just had a look and around here we're talking $200.

    Oh dear, there are rust converter & rust reformer paints that turn rust into a metal that can be painted. Much easier & safer than the wire brush. Well, you did your best, no guarantee the paints would have worked, as the bowl was so rusted out.

    • @TheFarmyardGarden

    The garden shed is coming along. You can replace the glas in the window. Soften the glacing compound with a heat gun. Remove all of it. Go to a glass cutting place and have new glass cut and roll a snake with new glacing compound for both sides of the glass and shape into place and press it with a putty knive at an angle so water runs off.

    • @TheFarmyardGarden
      @TheFarmyardGarden  16 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I think it needs the frame fully restoring first. We want to do it but not the best time of year, so it’s on hold for a month or so. Don’t want to remove all the glass, to work on the window in this weather. Bit chilly 🥶🥶
      Hoping to be able to restore it though, more than replace with a new frame. We shall see. Lessons have been learned 😬

    You should be able to fix that hole yourself Clare . Ask Duncan where does he keep his old gunbarrel fittings and select a reducer and plug of the appropriate size , probably 1" , you might have to file the hole slightly. These fittings are available in plumbing supplies places 😅 . Before doing anything though you should tap around the bottom of the copper with a light hammer in case it's rusted through somewhere else .
    When I was a lad people used a thing called a pot mender to repair holes in kettles and pots etc . Ask at your local hardware shop and get laughed out the door.😂
    I hope you're being sponsored by DeWalt for using all their power tools. Thanks for a most interesting vlog , much better than gardening in frozen ground .

      I have a few ideas for the wash copper. I’ve been planning an outdoor sink anyway, to wash off and prepare veg. I can now do it in this building. I plan to have a liner made for the copper, in order to store compost in there over spring, and it may well become my potting shed instead at that time of year.. as warmer… and I hope to have power for coffee making during the pricking out time of year.
      I’m quite excited about being able to keep the space looking very authentic/original whilst also being able to adapt it to my current needs.

      Duncan hates jeans too but he hates chilblains more. Whoops HA!
      I wanted to jet wash under the lid and had planned to use bleach, as you suggested that to help give it a more aged look. It’s primarily why I snubbed using a new piece of wood.. I wanted aged HA!

      @TheFarmyardGarden I think the new one will look fabulous! Those i used for decoration, i think i just wirebrushed them and used a bit of graphite stove shine on them, i gave them to my mom later, but but the one currently in my garden here is a small cast iron cauldron i found on an old landfill on my fathers farm, it was smashed into pieces and incomplete, but i decided to bring it home anyway and plant strawberries in it so the strawberry whines did sort of climb out from the cracks on the side, but i big disadvantage i discovered was that it dries out very quickly, much faster than my ordinary flowerpots with full bottom and only drainage holes, this bottomless cauldron drain and dries at least twise as fast... ha ha So i probably have to plant something else in it this summer... However the cast iron ages very well outdoor. I was very close to use the old toilet as a flowerpot too last summer, but my old father quickly picked it up and drove it to the communal landfill with the water still splashing out on the road whan he wisited and apparently he know me... ha ha! i don't think i ever got rid of trash that fast before... Ha ha!

    Oh no Clare! Sorry that happened. Yes it must of been used so much the fire would have made it thin over time. Glad to hear you have found another one though and that lid looks fantastic! You could always convert this one into a planter now you know it has drainage.
    It might be worth posting on reddit to see if anyone has removed those bowls before and if they have any tips? You might be lucky and it is just stuck in the concrete. You might want to try heating the bowl with a blow torch to dry out the concrete around the rim to try and pry it out?
    Lovely seeing your horses. Thank you for sharing a video of them. I wonder if horses notice the steam from their noses and mouth like we do or hearing the crunching of the frost on the ground?
    Looks absolutely freezing there! Is that snow on the beds or frost? Couldn't tell but was the lake/ pond frozen? They said it has been the coldest Jan for 15 years and can quite agree. We got down to -6c, when normally it would be about 2c this time of year. By the looks of things the north will be warming up quicker than the south. I hope that there isn't too much flooding there.
    Just had to dig out some carrots in the frozen cold frame for dinner! Was very cartoonish pulling! Snapped a couple, saves cutting them! lol Also got a pitiful handful of pea sized sprouts and a sprout head to bulk it up lol. We still have some home grown potatoes in the workshop. Glad that there is just 3 of us to feed today! lol Making a parsnip and swede puree and roasted butternut squash with veg from the shops. Think we still have some homemade yorkies in the freezer so won't starve.
    Hope it warms up for us all soon. Hopefully the cold weather will have killed off a few pests. Have a great week!

    • @TheFarmyardGarden
      @TheFarmyardGarden  16 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I really hope it’s not difficult to remove the bowl. Be interesting to hear who easy it was for the person I’m buying the other one from, although they were ripping it out, so I guess it was of a salvage situation.
      I think the one we have could easily make a nice planter. It’s certainly up for suggestion.
      It’s a mixture of snow, that partial thawed and then froze solid. Very icy. Hard frosts on top. There’s been some thawing today, so that’s good news… well I say thawing. The grass isn’t as frosty but the ground is still solid.
      I can well imagine it was a challenge to harvest those carrots! Fair play to you. I did chuckle at it saving you from chopping them up 😂
      Forecast to warm a bit next week. Hope so for all of us
      Stay warm.

    • @AnyKeyLady
      @AnyKeyLady 15 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @TheFarmyardGarden Be careful of what i call "Metal Knickers" advice. Sometimes "ripping out" and salvage don't always go together.
      You could line it with a pond fabric for a bird bath. Look out for those large chimney stack pot things. The standard type we have would be too narrow to hold it but those square ones would be fab.
      Yes i had better times trying to scoop out our no churn rhubarb crumble ice cream than trying to get these babies out delicately! lol It was like kypton factor, trying not to disturb the others. It's a plastic cold frame 3ft high too! lol
      Think i am going to wait until temps get back to normal and pull it all out now. Whilst, i found and removed the caterpillars from the spring onions, i think some bigger grubs have gone underground again as one looked knobbled from the middle half way down. Think i will need to reset it again and remove them for the new year.
      Keeping it real it's just 3ft x 1ft x 2ft plastic coldframe. I can't self sustain in our garden for potatoes, carrots and onions but like to have them for special meals. I resow carrots every 10 weeks or so. We get 1inch x 5-6inch carrots. We are thankful for everything the garden provides in our small but large London garden.
      Last year was hard growing year but we did good on beans. Will be a great source of food, these next few months.
      Yes we had a day of frost to clean off the old car windows. but forgot we had rain that had frozen on the windows. Think that frozen rain was worse than the frost day. Was sharing my can of de icer with the neighbours as was dropping off hubby as was cold and he doesn't drive. I don't drive much these days because of my back.
      I was thinking back to 2010 winter weather with snow and black ice and remember doing a 360o downhill, down a back road coming home from work before coming to a mini roundabout. I was so lucky as i remember the build up of parked cars over the years and lucky i managed to clear them all, both sides and even escaped the two cars coming either side of the roundabout!
      My Dad wants to give me his newer automatic car but one of the reasons why i still have my 2005 manual fiesta since 2008. I sometimes even miss the manual choke on a car, from my previous cars. I am so lucky that it is still good for ULEZ in London and remembered that my car tax was cheaper because of its eco rating. You wouldn't think that with the amount of tax i pay now and most of the roads i drive on have poorly built roads, with lots of pot holes.
      You probably think i am a soft Londoner but it might be true as i don't like the cold. A few nights living rough before i was able to be put in care as a very young teen in the 90's, kinda makes me feel privileged to live in a house now after all our hard work in IT before sickness. I always make sure in our teachings that we show where our food comes from as well as where we live.
      We are carefully watching the flats being built at the end of our garden, across the road and hopeful in the height that they will be stopping as it blocks out our light. It is very stressful as we worked so hard to move away from that and the noise has been getting to me.
      My garden is my therapy and keeps me sane.
      Sorry might delete so not as to negatively affect your channel.
      You are sharing a lot of your life. I might be brave as you soon and i am still practicing again to post online.
      Happy to talk about private info in dm's. As an ex IT specialist for the BBFC and working with the inception of online data protection and NDAs, i feel an added pressure of what i post online. x

    So enjoyed this Clare! I LOVE building/restoring things (I think it is the power of the power tool! 😄). Devastated for you about the copper, but what a happy ending! It's going to be magnificent I just know it!😃

      I have to say, move very grateful Duncan likes to collect all the tools!
      “Have we got…?” Is generally met with a “of course!” 🤣🤣
      I’m so sad about the wash copper. I should have left the bottom alone but at least we have a couple of solutions 🙏🏻❤️

    Oh, I really felt for you when you broke it, but what a brilliant solution you found. Hope it's not too hard to remove the wash bucket. This is such an exciting project. Well done on the lid, both of you.
    Hope the weather warms up for some gardening. We're getting some warmer days next week, tomorrow will start with -11 and then go up to +4. I'm looking forward to it, so much ice all over the city.
    Have a great week!
    Trude

      Oh Trude, I was properly devastated. I just had no words. I couldn’t film any more in that moment. I’m so glad it happened before it was full of boiling water, to leak over my feet though.
      I am so pleased with the lid, from all the pictures I’ve seen it’s pretty much how it could have looked all those years ago. Wish the original one wasn’t missing.. if indeed they bothered to have one on this one.
      -11 is pretty chilly! WOWSERS! We have some slightly warmer temperatures coming to this week. I hope the ground thaws. I’ve a fruit cage extension to build.
      Take care. See you next week.

    When I was a child we had a wash tub like that in weekly use, it got a hole and was mended by patching above and below the hole with a nut and bolt and some solder I think. Carried on using it until mum got an electric washer with the mangle on top in the late 50s

      Ooo this is very interesting!! Thank you! I’m going to pass this on to Duncan and the blacksmith. I’d resigned myself to using this as a planter, with a ready made drainage hole 😞😬🤣
      I love the sharing of history stories this project generates. Fascinating. I had no idea how washing was done, which is probably why I’m so misty eyed over this find. ❤️

    sorry if you’ve already covered this, but what was that basin originally for? washing clothes? washing fruit and veg harvested from the garden? since it doesn’t have a drain and the basin is attached to the counter, how was it emptied?

    • @TheFarmyardGarden
      @TheFarmyardGarden  15 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Hi. It’s a Victorian Washing Machine, of sorts. There’s no drain due it having a fire underneath it to warm the pot of water.
      The fire would be lit to boil the water and the hot clothes washes done first. Before the water was allotted to be less hot for the more delicate clothes.
      They’d scoop the water out when finished on to the floor, as is slopped to a drain hole in the corner opposite the fireplace.
      The residual warmth from the fire would dry out the rest of the basin

  • @tracybrown6207
    @tracybrown6207 16 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

    It was just too thin. So don't worry about it. If the other basin does not fit for whatever reason, you can resin this hole (The Works have a resin coaster set for £3.50, so you could use that rather than buy a big bottle). Use Kurust or similar to kill off the last of the rust. Then oil it (any) to give it a barrier and sheen. I would still do this and have it as a spare. When the wooden lid has dried I would give that a coat of protection too (oil or varnish - whatever is your preference).

    • @TheFarmyardGarden
      @TheFarmyardGarden  16 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      We did think about the repair kits you can buy, and it is very tempting, but they’re not rated as heat proof to light the fire under it, and it’s hit and miss if they’d be waterproof to hold the pressure of water if the bowl was filled for washing veg.
      I think if I was keeping it solely as a display piece then yes, absolutely what I’d do and a great suggestion. Thank you ❤️
      I need to jet wash the lid when the taps have thawed out and I do have some clear Osmo protective coating.

    Where would we be without baler twine 😂. I can understand how you felt about the copper, but what a find on ebay. We live in a bungalow which was built on what was a farmyard. Sadly we have no buildings but the houses next door have the original pig styes. They are used as garden sheds and what i wouldn't give to have had one of those in the garden.

    • @TheFarmyardGarden
      @TheFarmyardGarden  16 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I have the original old dairy in my garden, although the door is on the wrong side. I believe they later kept pigs in the dairy back in the day too.
      It’s connected to the workshop now, so full of a tools and racking with spare parts. I often thing it’d make a nice gym/hot tub/sauna space .. then I remind myself I’m beyond middle age and not la de da 🤣🤣

    D.I.Y , or doing it myself as I like to call it, is always a learning process (which includes face palming fails). The copper is probably too far gone for practical use, it will however make a cracking pot for growing hostas.

    • @TheFarmyardGarden
