The "saying hwuat hWat Hway?" Scene was what made me turn it off 🤣🤣 I did continue later but its alway amazing to think ADULTS made this... Or any of these types of comedy. Feels more like a teenager made them.
Fun Fact: Bill Hader's long hair in the movie was not a wig. Instead, he had hair extensions put in, which he wore through the entire summer the movie was shot.
I also remember an interview with Bill Hader about the real life person that inspired this character in Hot Rod. Apparently that lsd welding story was real :') that person saw the movie and said to Bill Hader what a coincidence it was cause that happened to him, not realizing he was the actual inspiration for it haha
I had forgotten how good this movie was. Thank you for the reminder to rewatch it. As a non-American this was my introduction to The Lonely Island and this movie was the perfect way for them to reach more of an international audience and showcase their comedic talents.
Hot Rod is a cinematic masterpiece, and one of the greatest motion pictures to ever grace the big screen. Without hyperbole, it is the very definition of art, and is what every other poor work which dares to call itself a film must bow down to in reverence and awe.
I watched this on a plane as a kid. It was the in flight movie. I was laughing so hard the flight attendant had to come over and ask me to keep it quiet. 10 year old me misses this movie.
Legitimately one of my favorite movies. It’s my comfort movie when I’ve had a bad day and need a laugh. They’re something charming about how goofy it is, like they knew critics probably wouldn’t love it but everyone working on it loved it so that’s all that mattered. The story, while absolutely ridiculous, is pretty wholesome and shows such a sweet bond between friends. One of the funniest things a friend pointed out about it on first watch was that he couldn’t figure out what decade this was supposed to be set in, like there’s something about it that feels like it could be anywhere from the 1970s to the early 2000s, but he loved that part of it.
It wasn't necessarily *about* the stunts. He wanted to raise money to save his (step)dad-TO KICK HIS ASS-but actually, and more importantly, win his respect.
One of my all time favorite movie lines just because of how out there it is, yet it's still said with the same kind of conviction you'd expect from someone giving actual advice lol
I had an acquaintance in the parkour community. He did stunts and passed away from a nasty stunt fall gone wrong. One of the kindest souls I'd ever met, snuffed out like that. Stunt performers don't make enough, and are overlooked so much when it comes to the film industry. It's truly sad. I'm happy that a movie like Hot Rod exists for the sole fact that it does shine at least a small light on the incredible work stunt performers do.
Thats horrible that he passed. You're right, they get very little recognition. I think there should be an action movie starring stunt performers. I do hear about how many injuries they suffer and we should give the ones that want it, time in the spotlight.
To this day it is the hardest I have ever laughed. Side-splitting-cant-get-enough-air kind of laughing. Sometimes I rewatch that whole montage to reminisce.
This is one of my all time favorite cult classic movies. I still laugh at the "cool beans" scene whenever I think about it, and this episode is right, the physical comedy is terrific!
Funniest movie of all time and the incredible stunt-work does not go overlooked without praise. No matter how many times I've seen this film, I bust up at least once every 5min. Can't get enough of it!
I remember loving the Jackie Chan movie's when I was kid. And getting to the end credits of the ones that showed the stunts and the accidents was always amazing to me. Jackie Chan broke at least one bone for every movie that legend made!
Genuinely one of the most quotable movies I’ve ever seen. “Yoo-hoo shitheads. I just found a bag of fireworks in the men’s restroom. Would you guys like to light them off?”
For anyone who likes Hot Rod, I recommend the New Zealand stunt man comedy 'The Devil Dared Me To' which also came out in 2007. They make a great double-feature.
This is my favorite movie. I know there’s so many objectively better movies, but I have never enjoyed watching a movie more. People that love this movie, LOVE this movie. It’s always fun to meet another person who will do a cool beans riff with you.

Rod falling off that mountain for what seems like ages broke my roommate :') she rewinded it for a dozen of times and I don't think I've ever seen her laugh that loud haha
My high school had a big theater and on the weekends for charity they would show movies there for high school students only and we got to vote on what movies to play. One weekend Hot Rod and some other movie were going to be shown. They were gonna show the other movie first (I don't even remember what it was) and we all threatened yo stage a mass walk out if Hot Rod wasn't shown first. Eventually they caved and put on HR. Me and my friends knew every single line and screamed them out seconds before the actors said them. When the movie was over we left and didn't even stay for the other one. All the teachers and other students not in my large group of friends was so pissed at us but that was one of the best days of my life.
I actually watched that first stunt of the stuntman breaking his leg about 10 times years ago, because I could not tell if it was cut with a rag doll. He flops so loosely after the hit that it seemed unreal.
This is filmed in my town, Cloverdale BC Canada. I learned to swim in that pool! Last summer my buddy from Norway came and is a huge fan of Hot Rod so I took him to all the filming locations including Rod’s house. The owners came out and told us all about the filming etc. Hilarious movie, it’s a must see.
This is still one of my top 5 movies I’ve have seen in theaters. It was a wild experience Edit: it was just me and 2 other friends in the whole screening. We got to enjoy it for ourselves
One or my favorite comedies. I have watched this movie so many times I can't count. I have tried to get so many friends to watch and they hate it. Which is fair. Comedy is objective. But, this movie is one I will watch over and over till I die.

I do some really low time stunt work for a local movie maker in my town. I've fallen out of trees, been hit by a few chairs/stools, and have even crashed a motorcycle off a cliff into the Ohio river. I was always paid fairly well for those times and I don't complain. However, it gave me a serious admiration to those who take some serious licks for film as a main career. And yes, I am "trained" per say. I took a lot of falls and hits in the military and with my physically demanding job? I had to learn how to take those hits and bounce back. Don't ever work for a non licensed/uninsured local film maker. You can get hurt extremely badly.
I don't remember laughing so hard before or since watching hot rod. I almost died of laughter on the fall scene, I completely lost it for the whole duration.

One stunt that is basic but stuck with me is when Steve Martin is trying to get out of the cell in 'Three Amigos!' and gets pulled across the room backwards and slammed into the wall because his arms and legs are chained to counterweights attached to the wall. I actually wanted to be a stuntman because of 'The Fall Guy' TV show in the 80s as a child.
I remember seeing trailers for this and thinking it looked kinda dumb, only to have to pause the movie after the first scene because I was laughing so hard. The way he just immediately pukes his guts out after that crash is so funny.
