So many references in this video! From its length to the pronunciation of "circumvent" and more, it is perfect! I rarely write comments on TH-cam, but this time I had to leave a note.
I didn't realize it was a reference since GOB pronounces it "circumvrent" a few times and "cirsumvrent" only once... if I'm remembering correctly. I don't know when he pronounced it "cirsumvent" without the "r."
I died at the perfectly timed appearance of Tony Wonder. And there was something like "still couldn't find Plant audience". This guy is clearly a true fan.
One of my best friends is really close with Tony Hale (Buster) They went to church together when she lived in LA. The entire cast of AD knew Tony was a devout Christian and that he rarely ever swore. So, when he improved that ramble about ‘Mother’ and swore about 27 times in 20 seconds, the cast’s shocked and horrified reaction was completely real and genuine.
We did wrong by this show by not giving it the hype it deserved when it aired. I watched it years later and still to this day, find it to be the funniest, cleverest show I have ever seen.
I have watched the rest of the development on repeat more times than I can count and it's still one of my favorite shows of all time. That cast is responsible for some of the greatest moments in comedy.

He literally spent every commercial break either cursing out Fox or telling me that in 10 years every comedy would look like Arrested Development (and, like, he wasn't wrong lol). This is almost as good as watching an episode of Arrested Development. I NEVER knew about the part where they ordered 18 homes instead of 22 was a reference to the number of episodes. I've seen the series probably five or six times now and am just now getting some references lmao. Funny thing is, I used to shop for older media at Goodwill that I couldn't find anywhere else and Arrested Development season DVDs were always in stock no matter when I went. I had no idea what it was at the time and never bought it. I was such a fool.
I love this show not only because its super funny, smart, incredible cast but it makes you feel so good, makes you fall in love with all the characters and feels like you are on this crazy ride with them all.
Just wanted to share my AD story; my cousin/aunt recommended to my family the 1st season DVD to watch but only left us the 1st disc, so when my brothers and I were bored during summer vacation 05', we ended up repeatedly re-watching those first 6 episodes (i was so curious if they followed thru with Michael going to jail for kidnapping the wrong Marta/that's where we cut off lol) It kind of felt like an HBO Curb Your Enthusiasm type show when I first watched it and it felt so innovative, smart, and obviously hilarious, but we became obsessed before buying the entire 1st season for ourselves. Our parents bought us the 2nd season for Christmas 05', remember this is before streaming/watching quality online, so the anticipation was always killing us between episodes, but then we were able to watch the remainder of S3 live! I remember our parents buying us a bunch of pizza, soda, snacks for the 4 episode finale, and my mom sacrificed watching the olympics ceremony in her bedroom, so we could all enjoy the AD finale on big TV, and I think it was the most we all ever laughed at once, with my brothers even teary eyed laughing during some of the jokes. Anyways, you can tell Mitch put his heart and soul into the show, and those first 3 seasons hold a huge place in my heart and with my family!
This is how I discovered the show for myself too. In 2015 the ONLY DVD we had at the cabin the middle of nowhere was my sister-inlaw's season 3 DVD. I had to watch all the seasons after watching that one. So good.
I've said it already on part 2. This channels's production quality is just too good for youtube. You need your own site and deserve your own following.
Man, I loved the show from the first day it aired. I tried so hard to get my friends on it, but nobody would listen. Sucks that it didn't have a longer run. But those first three seasons were magic.
I only started watching 10 years after season 3 ended. I am ashamed to say I am like your friends at the time: I wouldnt watch it thinking it was "just another (bad) 'comedy' show"
Completely changed the face of comedy when it aired, and like most great works of art it went over 99%’of the peoples heads until there was enough time to reflect. The writing and camerawork is impeccable and the show has some of the best replay value of all time. The jump the shark scene is my go to when trying to explain how layered the show is. Great video!
Did it go over their heads or not show up on their radar? I discovered by coincidence - had a roommate really into comedy & tv (became a tv writer later). I introduced it to so many people. Not one didn't like or get it, but so many hadn't heard of it. Idk exactly why I'm arguing w/ several ppl in these comments about this point... but I think I feel like we're kinda perpetuating the poor decisions of network execs by assuming that the vast majority of ppl will not watch something this good. I mean I'd love to feel smarter than 99% of people, but I'd love even more to just actually get more great shows.
What a fantastic love letter to perhaps the greatest comedy show ever. So well documented with perhaps the best editing I have ever seen in a video like this. And the references to the show are pitch perfect every time!. Kudos!!!
It's funny also the layers- like the Winkler jumping the shark bit because his character the Fonz is the reason for the idiom. This show is just so amazing- the first run anyway >_
This video is impressive in that it's informative, funny, and clever! It feels like Arrested Development came right before niche shows were able to survive on network TV. More advertising might have helped but I don't think that would have saved the show. I remember after the Emmy win my parents watched a few episodes and for the most part they just didn't get the hype, yet they enjoyed a movie like 40 Year Old Virgin.
Didn’t know the back story of the Burger King tie-in but sensed this was the writers’ backlash to being forced to include this by playing it SO over the top. Along with the astounding creativity, AD was so beautifully cast! First viewing I focused on Tobias and the Lucilles. In subsequent watches, realized how amazing Bateman and Cera were interacting - totally dysfunctional yet the normal ones! Thanks for this vid - and HUZZAH! to all involved in this masterpiece.
It took me about a decade to notice the family dynamic. Arrested Development as in narcissism. Gob the golden child. Lindsay second golden child/scapegoat. Michael the savior/scapegoat. Buster the lost child. Everything about the show was perfect. I wish it were still running today.
I, like too many people, never heard of this show when it aired. I found it by accident in a Block Buster and I was instantly hooked. Speaking of Buster, there was one episode when he made me laugh so hard I literally stopped breathing...TWICE!!!! TWICE!!! No other show has ever done that even once!
The best part of my week was watching a new episode of Arrested Development. I watched it as it aired, but recorded it (with a VCR lol) and rewatched it all week long so I could catch every bit before the next new episode. At the time, I had NO IDEA it wasn’t being watched. How could it not be loved? Still shaking my head.
Don't worry you didn't miss any episodes, plus no one would talk to you about watching it cause no one really watch it, only one person in my frind group would.
“Yes. But where did the lighter fluid come from?” One of the most brilliantly scripted, filmed, edited, narrated, acted … hilarious shows of our time. Perfection.
You nailed it by pointing out the problem of being on FOX. In the first season I was aware of the show, but figured "That's the network with the Paris Hilton reality show, right? Pass." It also didn't help that I was used to TV I could put on in the background. It wasn't until the start of Season 2 that I fully watched an episode and realized what I'd been missing.
I loved this show from the beginning Devastated when it was cancelled So many great lines, concepts etc The one that I will still riff today is "I've made a HUGE mistake "
Watched it twice all the way through. First time I painstakingly suffered through the original cut of Season 4. Second time was wayyy smoother with the recut version. To be completely honest I think Season 5 was pretty good.
Fox was unforgivable for this sin. I remember my buddy and I were so desperate for this show to keep going we would intentionally keep the TV on when the show was on, not knowing that's not how ratings quite worked.
This is nuts.. I've only started rewatching this masterpiece of a show yesterday, I only realised how old it actually was (2003? Damn) until Michael Cera showed up on screen.. I guess that means it didn't age.. It really did lay the groundwork for things to come. First season is really, really top of the table writing brought to life. Great vid man. PS- Hey phone! Stop spying on me! 😂
It's really not a high threshold? I'm dumb but I'm lucky enough that in 2005ish (?) I had a roommate who was really into comedy & tv and I heard him playing a dvd or rip or something of AD and was hooked. Who knows if I'd ever even become aware of it otherwise. Pretty straightforward marketing issue seems to me.
it's not hard to *get* smart shows. it's hard to *write* smart shows. people say this all the time but if a show reaches any level of mainstream popularity, it's not "for smart people". what it is, is written assuming the audience can actually put two and two together, and think. that's not easy to do, so all the props to the writers- but that isn't exactly a difficult ask of an audience.
I watched this when it was on. Although that increasingly became a huge challenge. It's worth noting that shows like the American Office or Parks and Rec wouldn't exist without this show. I still quote it all the time.
@@adamimberti6948What? Modern Family is totally different. They lean more into stereotype jokes. Like making fun of Jay for being old or cam and Mitch for being gay, etc.
I feel very fortunate that my parents were such huge supporters of this show on release and made sure to buy the dvds the day they came out. And made sure to also force me to watch! I'll always remember bringing the dvds to class and asking my teacher if we could watch haha. Was so upset at it being cancelled! Still one of my favorite shows to date and probably the funniest still.
Arrested remains one of the best TV shows ever. I have watched and rewatched it several times and still pick up on new jokes and Easter eggs each time. Truly genius!
This show saved me from depression after the 2008 recession. Knowing that something could be so well-crafted and purposeful woke me up and changed my life.
I'll never forget the first episode of AD I ever watched. I was at my gym, walking on one of those treadmills with the built in TV. AD was on, and it had me laughing so hard while I walked, the people on the treadmills on either side of me kept looking at me and all I could do was shake my head "sorry" back at them. I was hooked. What a great show.
Arrested Development was one of the best shows America has ever put out-of business (My attempt at humor.) Seriously, it was unlike anything else and too short in my opinion, I could not wait for the next episode! It was an adventure in the lives of a family more screwed up than my own and I fell in love with each one of them. If they continue the series-I will alert everyone and watch it faithfully. I really cannot imagine another show coming close to it in any way.
I’m not usually a fan of American humour…..but THIS show was so different from the normal recycled US ‘comedies’ and incredibly clever with its jokes that even after all these years I’m STILL picking up WTF funny moments! The whole cast and crew just smashed it!!!
Amazing video. I'll never forget stumbling onto this show and believing it to be the second coming of Seinfeld. Loved it. Seeing all these little tidbits, and your editting/script emulating the show is a real hit. Great job
I just want to say thank everyone involved for making this masterpiece and us dedicated fans for sticking with it for so long. No comedy show will top the first 3 seasons.
I have never loved a show more than Arrested Development. I hate laugh tract sitcoms and loved jokes that made you think. No shock to hear network executives didn't understand and killed the show. For those of us who watched it weekly it was such a fun ride!
One of the greatest shows ever. The jokes are fresh and on another level. The characters are all great and each shines. And everything from the title to the writing is brilliant.
Literally one of the greatest funniest shows in TV history. It's a tragedy that more people didn't watch it. Imagine if we'd had 10 seasons like season 1. Such a huge missed opportunity.
I began watching the show in its second season. I was 13 or 14 years old, WAY too young to understand anything but the most basic level of jokes. But even those were masterful. As I got older, I continued to rewatch the show and I find something new every time. Arrested Development has given me years of enjoyment and it still holds up so well.
As a huge fan of this show- Awesome video. Absolutely awesome. The in-jokes, the depth you went to, etc. Very well done and thank you for making this. Clearly the person who made this is a fan of this show. I am so impressed with the extensive connections you made between the show, and the making of the show. You've earned a sub, for what that's worth.
A+ work on this one. Took me back to college when we would get together a group of about 20 people and watch with the rule that you had to be silent unless laughing or everyone would yell, "No Talking!" as if we were guarding George Sr during visiting hours.
Fabulous look-back at a show I once followed religiously--I was deep into improv comedy at the time, so it was *necessary* to keep up. That it was brilliant in all accounts (was I the only one who thought it was genius to cast the female lead of Play Misty for Me as Lucille?) made me a fan. Thanks! P.S. I will NOT be surprised if Hurwitz did the entire revived season while on LSD....
nearly 20years later, still one of my favourite shows, with it's foreshadowing, callbacks and misunderstanding gags. the show on repeated viewing just gets better and I find myself changing who is my favourite character every time. I find it strange that it's not one of the biggest shows and considered a cult classic. main stream viewers who didn't give Arrested Development a chance,be like:- I've made a terrible mistake 😉😆

That sounds like an amazing time and a core memory, shit who's cutting the onions
What a kickass family! Love this.
THATS SO CUTE OMG
This is how I discovered the show for myself too. In 2015 the ONLY DVD we had at the cabin the middle of nowhere was my sister-inlaw's season 3 DVD. I had to watch all the seasons after watching that one. So good.
I still can't believe the final was aired at the same time as the Olympics
I've said it already on part 2. This channels's production quality is just too good for youtube. You need your own site and deserve your own following.
Man, I loved the show from the first day it aired. I tried so hard to get my friends on it, but nobody would listen. Sucks that it didn't have a longer run. But those first three seasons were magic.
You’d have to have MASSIVE connections to get your friends on it! They don’t just let ANYONE on those studio lots. . .
@@jnnx 😂😂😂 smartass
its such a lonely life not having friends that are as obsessed with AD 😓😓
I only started watching 10 years after season 3 ended. I am ashamed to say I am like your friends at the time: I wouldnt watch it thinking it was "just another (bad) 'comedy' show"
were those friends like the members of the family that are all non-protagonist
Absolutely sheer comedic genius, and a perfect example of "Pearls before Swine".
This show has soooooooo many sons, it’s crazy 😭 all the ones you mentioned plus Schitt’s Creek really do remind me of arrested development
Arrested Development is such an amazing show… absolutely love it.
Arrested Development is my comfort show...probably already on my 5th watch through. Im still able to find little easter eggs to this day
What a fantastic love letter to perhaps the greatest comedy show ever. So well documented with perhaps the best editing I have ever seen in a video like this. And the references to the show are pitch perfect every time!. Kudos!!!
Thank you so much! Now tell all the people saying I pronounced circumvent wrong aren’t true fans!
the cut to “BUSTER!” in the beeps is the best piece of comedy editing I’ve ever seen
This recent watch I was really appreciating Portia de Rossi. “Oh I have to go with Tobias…”
@@ItWasAShtShow my favorite Lindsay moment was the leopard underwear question from Lupe (“yours or mister’s”) and the dejected delivery of “mister’s.”
THIS is why the later seasons are great. Michael and George Michael "became" slimy bluths.
Didn't get to experience this show until college. Still in my top 3. Wish I could have watched it live
At least you got to binge it. It was a long week between episodes.
Don't worry you didn't miss any episodes, plus no one would talk to you about watching it cause no one really watch it, only one person in my frind group would.
What are your other 2 shows from your top 3? *Insert "show me what you got" meme
Other top 2 are Always Sunny and The Office
@7:14 the quote, "Chance favors only the well prepared" was not Albert Schweitzer, but Louis Pasteur.
“Yes. But where did the lighter fluid come from?” One of the most brilliantly scripted, filmed, edited, narrated, acted … hilarious shows of our time. Perfection.
Fantastic video! The Mr. F Fox gag was perfect
I loved this show from the beginning
Devastated when it was cancelled
So many great lines, concepts etc
The one that I will still riff today is "I've made a HUGE mistake "
i never knew this show existed until it hit Netflix and ended up binge watching the entire show. It sucks that such a great show was mishandled.
Before or after the new seasons came out?
@@ItWasAShtShow after new seasons
Fascinating!
Watched it twice all the way through. First time I painstakingly suffered through the original cut of Season 4. Second time was wayyy smoother with the recut version. To be completely honest I think Season 5 was pretty good.
Yeah the two last seasons really ruin the show, I usually just pretend they were never made or took place in a parallel universe.
I was going to go to work today but thanks to your "go get em" endeavor, I feel I should just watch all of the first 3 seasons .
Apologies to your boss.
You can do it. Just gotta put your head down, power through
we're lucky to have shows like AD and futurama, considering the threshold to enjoy them is so high. I'm surprised networks make smart shows at all.
@Nolan Harris Duuur ur a genius
Some executives are good enough to allow smartness, others really aren’t.
Arrested Development is soulless and cheap
20:00
Also Modern Family ripped this show off from top to bottom.
They took the whole aesthetic, completely dumbed it down and made a hit.
@@adamimberti6948 God, I hate that show!
"Oh COME ON!!!!! :p
@@adamimberti6948What? Modern Family is totally different. They lean more into stereotype jokes. Like making fun of Jay for being old or cam and Mitch for being gay, etc.
My all time favorite sitcom, thank you for covering this show, what this show could've been had it gotten the proper attention at the time
I feel very fortunate that my parents were such huge supporters of this show on release and made sure to buy the dvds the day they came out.
Kudos for having Tony Wonder appear at the phrase "it's a wonder" is spoken.
Best show ever, I said watching it for the first time 10 years after it aired
This show saved me from depression after the 2008 recession. Knowing that something could be so well-crafted and purposeful woke me up and changed my life.
this is genuinely brilliant content. you should be proud of what youve made
I'll never forget the first episode of AD I ever watched. I was at my gym, walking on one of those treadmills with the built in TV. AD was on, and it had me laughing so hard while I walked, the people on the treadmills on either side of me kept looking at me and all I could do was shake my head "sorry" back at them. I was hooked. What a great show.
Ironically, Cross ended up breaking her 3 rules; facial hair, bald cap & puffy clothing.
I think that was intentional
reminds me of Carolla bits on the unfunniest network execs having censorship powers and usually failing upward.
Is it ironic when they did that on purpose?
@@SoBayK80 surprised that Adam can recognize unfunny. With how terribly bigoted and worn out he is. He is a scar on the entertainment industry.
Too bad he blue himself
The dumb jokes make me laugh the most, like the sad Charlie Brown walk, Bob Labla's Law Blog, and Buster's hook hand
Best comedy show ever. And it's about time we got another free episode!:) Just kidding, I love y'all and can't wait for the next podcast.
Arrested Development was one of the best shows America has ever put out-of business (My attempt at humor.)
Seriously, it was unlike anything else and too short in my opinion, I could not wait for the next episode!
This show is absolutely INCREDIBLE. It’s nice seeing it get the recognition it deserves
Amazing video. I'll never forget stumbling onto this show and believing it to be the second coming of Seinfeld. Loved it. Seeing all these little tidbits, and your editting/script emulating the show is a real hit. Great job
10:31 Tony Wonder appears as he says wonder lol
8:44 None of it works without a solid foundation!
I just want to say thank everyone involved for making this masterpiece and us dedicated fans for sticking with it for so long. No comedy show will top the first 3 seasons.
I love the show. I knew it was genius from episode one. It aired both on Fox and FX for its premiere.
Jessica Walter as Lady Bluth is eternal
What a great show and thank you for this video!
How can a single network be so wrong for so many shows is mind boggling.
Best show ever. My favourite: "Yeah the guy in the $5200 suit is holding the elevator for the guy who doesn't make that in a year"
Another reason to hate Fox.
This was a truly underrated show. I wish it got more time on air cause it was so well written
I don’t what you’re talking about and I won’t respond to it.
Oh wait…
@@ItWasAShtShow lol I just haven't found many channels that aren't completely self-absorbed and impossible to have a subscription to

Not here. Just telling film history.
@@ItWasAShtShow .. I've made a huge mistake.
I think you guys are happy that part 1 is finished like “1 done, part 2 to go”❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤😂😂😂 you are the best TH-cam channel ever in 2022❤
A+ work on this one.
Thanks!
P.S. I will NOT be surprised if Hurwitz did the entire revived season while on LSD....
no matter what anyone ever says, this is one of the best shows ever made from the first episode to the last.
nearly 20years later, still one of my favourite shows, with it's foreshadowing, callbacks and misunderstanding gags. the show on repeated viewing just gets better and I find myself changing who is my favourite character every time. I find it strange that it's not one of the biggest shows and considered a cult classic.
main stream viewers who didn't give Arrested Development a chance,be like:- I've made a terrible mistake 😉😆
My introduction to this show was waking up in the ICU from a 3 day coma. The CNA was watching the first 4 episodes over and over again for 2 days straight. The most surreal 2 days of my life.
I was watching garbage reality shows when this first came out. I am ashamed and I will never forgive myself.
I was was probably watching pokemon or teletubbies or something. No shame
we wont be forgiving you either
Well... there's always money in the banana stand.
