I ran into this video by accident two weeks ago. I'm now the biggest Sierra Ferrell fan on the planet. I've been down the Sierra Ferrell rabbit hole ever since.
She sounds exactly like what you would expect to hear coming out of the radio in the 50’s. Her along with Billy strings are once in a lifetime musicians in my opinion, I don’t think there will be anyone like them come along for a long while there just too unique, such amazing vocalists and writers.
"meandering" is close to, but not exactly, the word I'm after...I'd say "counterpoint" lines that are very aware of the notes Sierra Ferrell is singing - different lines but COMPLIMENTARY AS HELL. At one point Josie Toney plays Sierra Ferrell's vocal melody in unison, for maybe 1 measure, then it's seamlessly back to a harmony line. I think Josie Toney listens intently to tapes of performances and thinks "What would [name of big name classical composer here] do at this spot?" Note the full instrumental sound from just string bass, acoustic guitar, and fiddle. (no mandolin for this show)
💯 i downloaded some of her live stuff, and when i listened to the album version i barely recognized it! What a timeless voice. We are witness to her starting out before she becomes super famous ❤️
I actually "bumped" right into her while shuffling down State Street at The Bristol Festival. I screamed and squealed like a little school girl. She laughed and gave me a big hug and a high five. She's genuine. Her laughter is even music. Highlight of my 65 years on the planet. That night she brought the house down.
Her laugh is so amazing! Heard it on other live videos and in interviews. Such a genuine woman. So glad she is sober(California sober) to be able to enjoy her for decades to come.
I was front row at the show. Drove 2hrs to this festival, hungover as all hell, bought the tickets 3 days before just to see her. What a show. West virginia waltz and whispering waltz brought me to tears. I bought two T's. I'd do it alllll again.

She has downplayed her guitar playing in interviews and no one mentions it in reviews and video comments. I think she’s a great guitar player who follows what I think should be the first commandment for musicians: serve the song! People seem to think great guitarists are people who can cram the maximum number of notes into a big flashy solo. I think great instrumentalists are people who put the song first. Those fancy solos are just typing.
This kind of playing, to my own ears, is much harder to sustain than any shredder/note crammer guitar wanking nonsense. Great tone, superb dexterity and the feel is simply beyond soulful.
Saw Sierra in concert first time yesterday, WOW! she owned the crowd, best live performer I've seen since maybe Dwight Yoakam in the early 90s. Sierra is the real deal.

After listening to Sierra's music as a musician myself, I have to say that to me she is an old soul playing in modern times. It is so refreshing to hear a young person playing such enriching music. It's deep lyrically and full musically. I mean dammit, I am hearing the 20's, 30's on up to modern lyrics and tempos.Kind of like someone fell asleep during a break at a gig in the 20's and woke up today. I don't know if any of this makes any sense to any of you, but like I said, it's how I see/hear it. She has great taste in guitars too ( I have one just like the one she plays in this video) lol

Toney adds so much to these songs with her so supportive playing. No other singer can touch Sierra's emotional lift and pure sound. No one except Loretta. Rarified company and with Josie Toney's surreal touch Sierra pulls you along with stories you cannot stop thinking about. West Virginia waltz. My, oh my how gorgeous is Sierra's voice. This should be more well known. Its sad that less talented stuff, of all genres, is pushed by mainstream media. You can love Sabbath and also love the rad shit they are doing. Bluegrass folk are scary good musicians, respected by people from all backgrounds.

This performance really is special. Bass, fiddle, guitar and that voice is all she needs to tell her stories and make me feel the emotions that go with them. The band is so tight. No one showing off, although you can tell when Josey gets lost in total concentration from the look on her face. Dedication to interesting melodies and beautiful harmonies. And you can tell they grew up playing live, not in a studio. Listen to the tempo changes in “Don’t Let a your Deal Go Down” - they’re perfect for the song and don’t even know “the grid” exists, let alone trying to snap to it. Finally there’s an old soul powering that voice. Thank you! ETA: I love her version of “Don’t Let Your Deal Go Down”. I wasn’t familiar with the song but it’s a classic covered by so many artists. Yet “Whispering Waltz” sounds like another classic to me and it’s Sierra’s own song. What is this music called? Folk? Bluegrass - don’t think so, not exactly. Country? From decades ago yes, from today’s Nashville not so much. Doesn’t matter because her music speaks for itself.

She has a knack finding and covering the old traditional songs and making them hers while still staying true the song. I think Charlie Poole is generally associated with "deal" but he probably learned it from someone else. She also does a wonderful version of Cold Rain & Snow (Poole, again) that will knock your socks off. See Wham Diddy music festival w/ Sierra and Nate (fiddle). It's a stunner.

What a sweetheart and talent, and Josie is quite the talent herself with a great voice to boot. I can't stop watching and listening to this video. Listen to it daily and I downloaded her CD but I prefer her live music. Love her natural confidence and mannerisms. It really is like watching someone from the 20s and 30s. What a Blessing. ❤
Wow! Just happened upon this by chance and I’m glad I did. What a fantastic group of musicians/singers. The vocals are excellent and so melodic to my ears and the fiddle player is great as is the guy on bass. Wonderful performance.👍👍🇨🇦
You can tell Sierra is a true curator of old time music. The amount of callbacks to classic music from the hills in "Wide World" alone (which in itself could be a callback) is amazing. She's a treasure.
This old punk rocker came, watched, and was summarily enthralled. And now I know there IS hope for this generation of young'ns. Sweet sounds aplenty. Kind on the eyes too.
Never heard of her until about a week ago on KCBX in San Luis Obispo. Her voice is unique and incredible, and the songs have depth. The is the real deal all right !
My brother's Father-in-law, Tim Mull, got to play guitar for her at a jam sesh for the song "Rock Salt and Nails," and there isn't a dollar I wouldn't pay or a bone I wouldn't break to be able to have an experience like that or even just to hear her live. She is by far the best vocalist in the modern bluegrass scene and an incredible guitarist. Every note she plays sounds beyond beautiful.
At first, I was like, "That's not her voice .. she is awesome, and all the other musicians around are awesome!! I am sitting here like I will take her!! All the way!! Anyway.. badass, beautiful ladies right there.
From her various concerts and videos I like this trio setting the most. It's so minimalist, just enough to best focus on the 4 harmonizing instruments (definitively including Sierra's wonderful voice) and their synergy.
This performance is just unbelievably good! I can't express how much I dig this. The bass player is awesome, and the fiddler is a Goddess, and of course our lady up front is unparalleled. I can't share this enough. Thank you!!
This may sound odd, but for those of you that watched Doris Day movies as a child where she sang (almost all), Sierra really reminds me of her and has given me a wonderful walk down Memory Lane. We saw Sierra in Knoxville, TN and cannot wait for her return visit!
WOW, I never would have connected those two because of their completely different musical formats but I can see and hear it now. Our family grew up loving Doris Day movies and music and my kids loved and sang along with her timeless songs. Great observation and compliment to Sierra. Doris was the most contagiously talented ray of sunshine to grace the musical stage and screen.
Wow, I' haven't heard a Doris Day comparison, yet. Will definitely check it out. Not surprising, she seems to encompass so many attributes of the greats. Kitty Wells, Dolly, and the list goes on and on.
In dreams is one of the best songs I’ve ever heard. I keep playing it on guitar over and over again to get the little nuances of her singing. Most fun I’ve had playing music in a bit!
Could remember how Sierras music hooked me over a year ago. But now I think it was this video that popped up! ( thank God!) That first song Real country! Next hooked! Then the next and next. Every one classics ! 9:20 Crazy about this otherworldly talent. New singers normally don’t make 30 sec past my gong. Still nobodies music even close

ive always chased musicianship in my listenins. Used to listen to tech death as a teen now its folk/bluegrass.

Kinda blowing my mind.
My brother's Father-in-law, Tim Mull, got to play guitar for her at a jam sesh for the song "Rock Salt and Nails," and there isn't a dollar I wouldn't pay or a bone I wouldn't break to be able to have an experience like that or even just to hear her live. She is by far the best vocalist in the modern bluegrass scene and an incredible guitarist. Every note she plays sounds beyond beautiful.
Holy crap, what talent. My first exposure to these 3 and I was hooked in the first 30 seconds. What else am I missing?

From her various concerts and videos I like this trio setting the most. It's so minimalist, just enough to best focus on the 4 harmonizing instruments (definitively including Sierra's wonderful voice) and their synergy.

This may sound odd, but for those of you that watched Doris Day movies as a child where she sang (almost all), Sierra really reminds me of her and has given me a wonderful walk down Memory Lane. We saw Sierra in Knoxville, TN and cannot wait for her return visit!
WOW, I never would have connected those two because of their completely different musical formats but I can see and hear it now. Our family grew up loving Doris Day movies and music and my kids loved and sang along with her timeless songs. Great observation and compliment to Sierra. Doris was the most contagiously talented ray of sunshine to grace the musical stage and screen.
Wow, I' haven't heard a Doris Day comparison, yet. Will definitely check it out. Not surprising, she seems to encompass so many attributes of the greats. Kitty Wells, Dolly, and the list goes on and on.
In dreams is one of the best songs I’ve ever heard. I keep playing it on guitar over and over again to get the little nuances of her singing. Most fun I’ve had playing music in a bit!
