I think people already know what a Jeep can do off road, so this is an important review to show what's different about the hybrid.
Electric range was not the factor for buying one of these. I have a Saraha with popular options. Sticker was $56K. Flew to Detroit and drove it home. A local dealer took $2300 off sticker which was a great deal. I’ve gotten 31 miles all electric, typical is 27. What really sells me is that after 3,000 miles of mixed driving I’m averaging 30 mpg overall. I don’t regret purchasing the 4xE for a millisecond.

This is really cool. I commute about 25 miles per day to and from work, and there are EV chargers at my office. Probably wouldn't happen, but I could foreseeably commute both ways without using any gas! Chances are I would end up driving it harder, so the gas would kick on, but that's very appealing.
There's an electric only mode that will only kick on the gas motor if you have your foot to the floor.
@@aclark106277 do you know you will ruin your rig if the gas engine never operates. People need to learn how to run these PHEV’s beforehand otherwise the gas will sit in the tank and lines and you will have a bigger bill than the 61K that just starts the “hole in the ground that you throw your money into”…like the answer to the question “what is a boat…? Which is similar but Jeep’s don’t float and create holes in the water.
@@davidthompson7817 old comment, but your scenario doesn't apply to plug-in hybrids. It's a pretty extreme example to assume a person will never ever use the engine, and just an occasional drive around town is a far cry from your vehicle sitting untouched for 6 months +.
@@grahamfloyd3451 This was an issue for the Chevy Volt, but that was a 100 mile range and would completely lock out the gas engine for daily driving. People would go months without filling up and the gas would go stale or gum up. I don't see that being an issue here.
I am driving my Sahara 4Xe on all electric mode daily commute sometime in between my drive without pushing hard the gas engine kicks on automatically for a few secs and than turns off by itself. So Jeep fixed that issue by installing software in 2023 car to run gas engine periodically even if u choose strictly electric mode not the hybrid
Thank you for a great video. I'm considering the Sahara as I have a really short commute to work, but do like to go camping. I currently have a Golf R, and as much as I like it, it's not the best for hauling a kayak onto a dirt road to the lakes in northern british columbia. For me, it's a real winner, and you guys have done an excellent job in providing the pro's and con's of the 4xe. Thank you.
Great video Nathan ! I will be getting a hybrid Ram Rebel as my next truck . Nothing wrong with saving money at the pump . The Straight gas rubicon can get up to almost 60,000 as well so it’s not that expensive .
Depending on your commute distance you could easily cut your fuel consumption by half if not more with this. 61k is still really steep for such a short electric range though.
It is a stacked rubicon model on tho too

I believe it will regenerate the battery as you drive on gas so you could technically switch back to battery after it is charged again
I bet it will go 10mls further without hvac on which could make a difference and after a 3h charge at work you can do the same trip back without even using the engine.
Yes you shoud pay on gas 7years more better after warranty 6years 18k must be problem and u can change battery also you pay more $30,000over

We absolutely love our 4XE. A few months in and 1600 miles and we are averaging 39.8mpg. It’s a 4xe Rubicon and we do tons of 20-25 mile commutes and have a level 2 charger so charge in between. It’s my 2nd Wrangler and by far my favorite.

I drive on the beach trails with mine and it's great to save the electric for offroad. The electric motor off road is so responsive and makes the terrain fell effortless. Big difference from the 2.0 gas.
I agree with you on the AC!! If you can’t use it when it’s there, then what’s the point?
My wife has one parked in our garage forcing my 21 F150 PowerBoost to sit outside. She leased a Jaguar I-Pace for her business and the lease runs out in September. We have several other vehicles so if she goes to the city she takes my Ridgeline. It’s close to the range with the I-Pace and there are no chargers so she gets range anxiety. Especially returning home with a headwind. The I-Pace has been consistently beating the estimated range by about 45 km on average, but that’s my wife’s driving. She is pretty gentle on it. She bought the 4xe Sahara as she wants it as a SUV, not off-road toy. So in the meantime I get to look at it each day as I go outside to take care of the place, but no touching!! Hahaha. She has sooo much willpower. It still has only 365 km on it. She picked it up, drove it home and that’s it! Arrgghh,,, hahaha.
I’ll show her! Just received my 49 Ford F1 pickup! I am taking the stupid Chevy 350 out of it (it’s pretty stout really, but belongs in a GM product, not Ford!). In place I will be putting a Flathead V8 backed up by an A4OD transmission and,,,,,,,,, I will be supercharging the Flathead! Not for go as much as show! It needs painting and an interior as it is a purple that is almost pink. Don’t like either colour! The rest of the suspension, etc is very well done! The truck is very well done in general, if you like the colour and the wrong powertrain!! Hahaha. I will have way less range than her IxPace!! Hahaha, that’ll show her!! I think.

Reliability is night & day with the Toyota. I sold my JL 2.0L due to electrical issues. I need one for pulling behind an RV, So Im looking at them again. If it were not a toy/offroad issue for me, I'd buy the 4 runner all day! If the 4 runner could be flat towed I'd buy that. MPG hurt, but repairs are a bigger issue...

That 26mls works out to 42km on electric that is amazing. Thats about 1/2 my commute each day so that would be a huge fuel savings. Great video guys.

Thanks for the video. You pretty much confirmed what everyone else is saying, that the 4Xe is a stellar jump for Jeep in the right direction but very limited in its ROI. Seems like for now it is best suited as a Sahara city Jeep. By the time you add all the aftermarket goodies to the Rubicon, your weight is maxed and you can’t add any passengers or cargo with a $100k total. It’s the “gen1 Tesla Roadster” of PHEV Wranglers and full of issues but I can’t wait until they get the perfected model. 👍
Rubicon 4xe with steel bumpers still has 850lb payload capacity.

@@davidcarrico3385 Regular Rubicon with the 8 speed auto is 1,160 lbs and with the 6 speed manual it is 1,200 lbs, so you get an extra fat guy for a total of 4 fat guys with the regular Rubicon.
@@2011blueman I’m not sure your numbers account for the steel bumper group I mentioned, which is around 140-145 pounds, but I stand corrected, I had thought they were the same but it looks like they are at least a skinny guy apart……thanks for the info, I always appreciate learning something I didn’t know or had wrong.

I went weeks and at least 1000 miles before pulling into a gas station.
We almost never use our other car now.
I drive about 10 miles each morning to either the desert or mountains outside Vegas to walk the dog in the morning around 6:00 am.
Come home, plug in the charger. By the time my wife heads out to shop or run errands it’s charged.
We do this several times a day. Go out, come back leave a couple hours later.
The other car ( infinity QX60) hardly moves unless we have a long trip.
Great video guys. As an electrical Eng Tech I can say that the drop off at the back was not your driving. What happens is the battery voltage gets lower as the battery depletes which causes the current to go up to maintain speed and velocity so current draw is the battery killer and the faster rate of depletion occurs. (Rough basics Watts = Volts x Amps reduce volts increase amps as wattage is constant to maintain the speed). Your slow takeoffs at the beginning added to the range otherwise you would have not made the advertised range.
Highschool student here. I have almost 1,000 miles on my new 4xe rubicon and about 450 of those miles are all electric saving me tons of gas money. And I get 23.8 mpg
Well, I've had 5 Jeep Wranglers over several years. Purchased a new 4xe 5 weeks ago, it's driven daily in town...still have 1/4 tank of gas. Love it, and so far I'll keep it !
Making a run from Irvine,CA to Las Vegas in a couple days and back. We'll see how that goes.
Note: In town acceleration is great with battery assist.
Charging syztem isn't a big deal. The system works well.

Wow! I'm impressed! Saw another video where the guy takes his to the dragstrip. Blew many production muscle cars away.
Cost aside, seems like a nice execution for this type of vehicle. Seems like you had a pretty level drive would be curious how it would do in more hilly area. I think PHEVs are still a great stepping stone but cost will put it out of reach for many but with a typical well optioned pickup in the $50 to $80k price range yet they seem to sell well who knows.

It is expensive, but if you get the full 7500 in federal tax credit (and a lot of the people buying a greater than 50k vehicle do qualify), it actually is cheaper than the equivalent gas only version by several thousand dollars. On qualifying for the tax credit, talk to a tax consultant, but it’s based on total tax liability, not what you get back on April 15, so in other words, if your employer takes out more than 7500 out of your paycheck over the span of the year, there is a good chance you qualify for the full amount.
The additional weight of passengers doesn't matter much if the vehicle braking makes good use of regen. The use of A CISCO a valid point, but given that you're only driving 30 miles, you should ve just wound the windows down and not used the AC.

Still Loving my 4xe Rubi. Saving lots of money since 90% of my driving is on electric with short burst of gas. Only vehicle I "may" considertradign Wrangler 4xe for may be a 4xe Gladiator. I did get the $7500 rebate/tax thing.

For the amount of driving I do, the diesel looks like it will make a lot more sense. 20 mpg after the battery is gone isn't great compared to the other options.
This aged , diesel is now in 2023 on factory recall
Real question. If the battery needs to be replaced how much does it cost and how much would average labor cost to have it done?
I am guessing the Sahara 4xe edition is little cheaper and if it can deliver 27 miles all-electric this will be a good mix for doing shorter daily commute & offroading & longer road trips. Good buy if you can get Fed tax credit. I wish it had a 50 miles all-electric range

Never mind the MSRP being a lot of dough, the base price is a lot of dough.
They’ve also done two msrp increases since then. You can thankfully get the 7500 federal tax credit but the Rubicon was disqualified from the state credits in my case due to the base price being over 50k.

The base rubicon 4xe has more features than a base gas only rubicon. If you include state rebate and federal rebate I am getting a rebate of $10,500 making it more affordable than the gas version.

What was the comment about it not liking running out of juice as Roman showed? Mine has over 4000 miles and I’ve beaten it up (stock) on 4 and 5 rated trails, and curious what was meant by that as I haven’t experienced anything negative except a reduction in gas mileage when the battery gets depleted. But all the power (375hp and 470 lb of torque) is still there because the system keeps 15% of the battery in reserve for those needs and constantly replenishes that from the P1 motor charging (the bottom 15% also happens to be the easiest, most efficient to charge). Loving mine, but looking forward to getting my 35’s and lift.

I think the Sahara is the cheapest 4XE trim they have for the Wrangler. Would be nice if they brought it down to the Sport.
Grand Cherokee 4xe has been officially announced, too! I should be able to adapt openpilot to the Grand Cherokee 4xe, for hands-free self-driving on long boring drives.

Hybrids are where it is at. They are so much more practical than an electric and have all the benefits!
Hybrids still require gas, oil change changes and have the same wear and tear items of an ICE car. A pure plug in BEV requires no maintenance and the only wear and tear items are tires and wiper blades. Also it's not even close in terms of performance. The slowest Tesla sold in the U.S has a 0-60 of 5.3 seconds and there are tons of SR Model 3's beating M2's and Mustang GT's in a drag race. Outside of the Porshe 918 Hybrid there's not another single Hybrid on the market that can do that.
@@RezandJen You just glossed over the impracticality of EVs. The OP made a very valid point in that EVs do not work for the vast majority of us. Mainly because the charging network is not sufficient in current form. I just traveled down the CA coast and we have the best charging network in the US; still wasn’t good enough to get me from point A to B without having to stop & recharge for 2 hours … the tech & infrastructure are in a good place, but not great when I can stop for 10 minutes and get a full tank of gas at my destination.

@@davec.3198 A hybrid with a poorly regulated battery will require a new traction battery way sooner than BEVs. Pretty much any liquid cooled pack is lasting 15-20 years and 500,000 miles.
My ? Is what is the life expectancy of the battery? Then what does it cost to replace?
We need a 50 mile EV range + 5000lb (or more) towing capacity PHEV Jeep Wrangler, gladiator or Ram 1500. Would love to daily drive on EV and have the ability to tow when going camping or just towing equipment around town. Unfortunately, nobody offers this combination (yet). And, no, the F150 hybrid is not plug in and has very very limited electric range (also electric range is from gas instead of solar/grid).
The regenerative breaking should also cut down on maintenance cost too
Would be interested in if you have the ac on or off. If my wife is in the car the ac will be fully on high. She would run down a ev car just with the AC usage lol.

I love the idea of a plug in hybrid. Most days I’m doing less than 15 miles. So not having to fill up sounds awesome but the price bump is more than the fuel I would save for years and years
I just wish price wise they hadn't limited it to the Sahara and Rubicon. Business wise I understand that but it might get an even bigger appeal at lower cost in the sport s trim

Is it like the Ford power boost where if you stay under 35 you'll remain electric? Is it possible to set it that way? I love a video where you go over all of the options and how long it can last if in fact you're just using it to assist like the Ford power boost rather than setting it all electric all the time.

Where i live not a single Wrangler 4xe model falls into any rebate bracket. Shame. We also have some of highest gas prices in North America too. Guess its the full time gasser ftw lol

I still don't get it. Once you are out of all-electric mode (27 miles of electricity used up), is it possible to operate it in hybrid mode (49MGE) or can it not run in hybrid mode because the electricty is used up? Is the 49mge obtainable only by running 27 all-electric and then 27 in all gas to get a somewhat combined 49? No one ever talks about how far it will go in hybrid mode only (gas and electric) before you have to drive in gas mode only.
mpge is only electric, once it kicks out of that it is in "hybrid mode" which gets around 20 mpg. I know it's kind of confusing.
4xe is cool but I’m gona wait until the fully electric rubicon comes out. I already have 2 ram 1500s so I can’t add another gas guzzler lol
My only complaint is that the air conditioning compressor definitely uses more power from your engine that having the windows open.

Does the gas engine turn on on a incline while the battery is charged? I want one as my daily driver but I live on a hill with a significant incline.

Bring on a BEV Wrangler!!! The large battery pack would ensure a low center of gravity and might include a frunk to store more items when taking off-road trips. We are still at the infancy stage for battery cells. It will likely take another 10-years before their is an real advancement in battery cell technology that can be manufactured in high volume. The 2032 Jeep Wrangler will be a totally different animal but easily identified as a Wrangler.

The Sahara will prob get more electric range due to the slimmer tires and lower gear ratio.

Yea it has 2 electric motors one on the engine and the other inside the transmission. So the gas engine and electric motors go right through the same drive train.
This is *THE* hottest selling vehicle on the market today beat out only by Tesla due to apparent supply constraints for sales of the Jeep. This is the target market i think for the Ford F150 Hybrid which has been on sale for around the same time frame but without nearly the same sales.
I just bought a Rubicon 4xe and they took the $7,500 right of the price. Got it for $49,000.
How did they do that?

I have the JLUR 4xe and at best being able to charge each day and use gas I only average 19-21 mpg gas and on a perfect day 24mpe fun vehicle. Just would get it hoping to be a true fuel savor. I live in an area with flat roads and mountains. Realistically if you can’t charge it at multiple locations daily or have a home fast charger your basically just getting extra torque. Real world numbers in all electric and gas combined you can maybe get 508 miles. But that’s charging constantly. If not your getting around 330-340 in just gas.
Damn. I need a car currently but full electric jeeps wont be a thing for a while.

My question is there will be a lot con questions about the power battery pack because of age or faulty function, costly expensive for replacement of new power battery like $12k plus labor. How buyers respond when they think and will afraid to buy a used jeep 4Xe which you try to sell it because of the power battery pack last longer or short life..

You would have gotten more if not driving it on the interstate. Around town with speeds below 50mph would have netted the best all electric range.
Myabe if its nice out then you can drive with no A/C but for most of us its a necessity.
Also Higher speed driving will eat up the battery life faster.

It’s always in hybrid mode (even when you set it to electric or eSave, it’s still a form of hybrid with a different torque threshold mapping for kicking on the engine). It’s always doing regenerative braking and at a minimum, recharging a 15% reserve so you always have power on tap and also to help start from a stop. With that said hybrid in the jeep (after battery depletion) isn’t all that efficient because it’s a brick, so around the city after battery depletion you can expect 21 to 25 and on the highway 20 to 22 ( I have heard a few getting worse). I have roughly 4000 miles on mine, I have a 60 mile round trip commute a few times a week that I start at full charge. Overall I’m at about 28/29. For my commute only(85% highway), I average 26/27. I have the Rubicon 4xe with steel bumper group.
