I own a Wrangler before overlanding became a thing. I absolutely agree with you it should not cost $50-70k for a Wrangler. People used to buy them for offroading and they are super simple to work on. Now its become something else.
If you want something easy to work on, the 4runner is pretty much your only option now. Unfortunately they're also pretty expensive, regardless of the generation you decide to get. The word is out on how capable and reliable they are.
Even a BASIC Wrangler is pathetically overpriced. When I was a teen in the late 1990s, a Wrangler was barely $17-19k. Now they're THREE times the price. Nope, not worth it no matter what Wrangler cultists say. And Wrangler fans are unreasonable, don't try to argue with them. They plug their ears and go naananananannaaaaaah! I ain't listening. Wrangler Wrangler Wrangler all the way even if it costs $100,000.
@@largol33t1 that is absolutely false. I just purchased a 2023 JL sport for 29,500msrp in November. That’s extremely cheap for what you get compared to other off road capable cars.
I am 75 years old, I owned many other cars ie Volvo, Toyota, GM, Ford, Subaru etc and a year ago I purchased a 2015 Jeep Sahara which is in mint condition with 98,000km This is the best and nicest car I have ever purchased If I could go back in life that is the only car I would ever purchase thank you JEEP
I an 72 years old and have a 2021 Jeep Mojave and I love it. I drive 200 miles up comfortably up north and have no problems making phone calls. I have taken it off road and love it there as well. The problem with some is they buy a jeep and they want the ride of a Cadillac. This is a jeep it’s not for everyone. I knew what I was getting when I bought it, and it’s exactly what I expected.
Unfortunately, many of these never see "Off Road" and are used as status symbols. A Jeep should be a Jeep and not a luxury vehicle. And... shouldn't cost $70k plus. Back years ago... they were "Jeeps" and now??? I'd hate to repair one of these. Great review and am 100% glad you tell the truth from a mechanical standpoint! Great job Sir!👍
Add pickups to that list of status vehicles. When I was in high school, you could get a basic 1/2 ton for less than $20,000. I think my old Chevy was $17,000, brand new. I get inflation, but vehicle prices do not reflect inflation. I'm guessing with inflation factored in, trucks should cost around $25-$30K now, but they're twice that.
@@johng.4959 I bought one in ‘17, as basic as I could build it. Still $39,000 and has a lot of stuff I didn’t want but you have no choice like electronic transfer case, gear shifter, MDS.
I just recently came across your channel and I love the fact that you’re actively posting new videos. And not just any videos good ones. Great content!!!
I own a 2021 Rubicon 4xe. To me it is 3 vehicles in one. Daily driver, convertible and an offroader with an amazing gas mileage ( I get 36 mpge). I am aware of the complexity in engineering but that's beauty of innovative mindset. Hats off to Jeep in pulling this off.
Ummm... ok Mall Crawler. I bet it turns all the man bun heads at the Starbucks... How wet do you get when you get a "Jeep wave?" Do the other cucks in Subaru's look on with envy? LMAO/SMH!
@@arthurfleck5672 Your everything that’s wrong with these comment sections. He enjoys his Jeep.. Be happy for him. If you don’t have something nice and/or constructive to say just STFU. “Mall Crawler” So what if it is? Maybe it isn’t 🤷🏻♂️ Who knows and who cares.
@@hasopi Oh they are. You see, I drive a real man's Jeep (CJ7) and give my version a "Jeep wave" (the middle finger) daily to simps like you on the road
I love my 4xe! I have a short commute and charge at home from solar panels and barely use gas except on trips. A few points to add to your video. Power. The 4xe has 470 lb/ft of torque and 375 hp. Second thing is noise. I don't agree at all about the interior noise. My hardtop model is surprisingly quiet inside for a vehicle of this type. I can easily have phone conversations. If you were referring to the SOT model in the video that may be louder due to the roof. I've never ridden in one to compare. Third thing is the federal tax credit. I got $7500 off. Yes, I still paid a lot, but nowhere near 70k for my loaded Rubicon.
My wife bought one of these. Coming from my 1990 ranger I was not sure I would like it. I actually came around to it and like it quite a bit. I figured it was complicated but I couldn’t appreciate just how complicated until I saw this video. As a guy who usually turns a wrench in his own cars, the plug in Hydrids are something I’m not interested in maintaining, so I am glad she got the 7 yr warranty. Great channel and video I am subscribed now.
Man, what a spot on review. I live in an area where all the suburban mom's drive full sized SUVs and I constantly see the lifted Wranglers about but never a drop of dirt or mud on them.. they, like the GWagens, have become mall crawlers.
There’s just something about riding around with the doors and top off of a Jeep. I own a Tundra and the wife has a GX460, I also have a 2004 TJ with the 4.0 that is the beach rig for the summertime. The kids always want to ride in the Jeep never the truck or the suv because it is so much fun to ride in. I usually don’t drive it in the winter because it doesn’t have a top but on days it gets in the 60’s here in SC I always pull it out of the garage and drive to to work. Every time I hop in the drivers seat it reminds me of being 16 again driving my old 84 CJ7 around.
I have a 2016 Jeep hydro blue..I see everyone peeking on a nice day or a snow day…Jeeps are cool. Little kids in carriages on the street always point at it. It does something to the human eye!
Great review overall, I bought one to take my family around as well as off road. I owned two Jeep Grand Cherokees before and this is a whole different world when it comes to off-roading, extremely capable. One thing to understand about the 4xe is the gas mileage will appear about the same as a non 4xe on the sticker. If you drive it on a long trip it’s about the same. However, at least 80-90% of my driving is on electric, I can go nearly a month without using gas. I just plug it in inside my garage so I can easily get 50-75 miles a day on electric by charging wherever it’s parked (full charge in 2 hours). Don’t try to run the gas tank close to empty though, you will run out of gas just before you hit the E (then you can use the battery). Other pluses, i get free charging at many locations and stores (no one is giving away free gas). The sound inside with the hard top is just fine, I’ve never noticed Tire noise and the on road steering is plenty good. Understand what you are buying this for, adventure, going places you would never otherwise go. Its like a mini tank, well designed and overall one of the most fun vehicles I’ve owned!
Electricity is free in some places because supply is high and low demand. Wait a few years and itll be more expensive to charge your jeep than fill up with gas
@@dawnsteisslinger353 good luck with those laws lol they will be reversed within 5 years. Not to mention ev sales are down and declining. The majority of people don’t want ev. Even the fiat ceo came out and said it’s not the future
@@Rockybalboa541 Hey I didn’t vote for those laws. My state is stupid and thinks it needs to be another version of Ca. Which I moved away from when I was 20. So a LONG time ago.
My wife and I were in town the other day and my wife mentioned to me how dirty this one particular Jeep was going around a corner while we were at a red light. I glanced at it and it had mud on the roof and the entire side was cover in dried on mud. There was only the windows, lights and brake lights were cleaned off and driven. Looking closer it was just a standard 2 door Wrangler probably last generation but that was hard to tell as the mud covered everything. I mentioned back to the wife aha someone using his Jeep for its intended purpose.
I own one and i go off-roading with it. it is absolutely an amazing experience when you crawl in silence or when you descend down a hill with 4low Manual 2 and max regen, you would not really to brake. While it is true that there is a fear of my jeep breaking down in the middle of nowhere, it is also true if it is just a regular rubicon. the extra weight is indeed a problem, but only if the type of off-roading you do is crazy rock-crawling that requires 40-inch tires.. otherwise the weight issue is not really an issue when in fact it actually lowers your center of gravity. if you are an actual overlander, there is even a possibility of tapping the 17K high voltage battery with alot of your everyday home appliances... you would need some wires and a 2000W inverter.. there are youtude videos of this as well as on the forum. speaking of gas mileage... oh well.. it's still a jeep.. go get the tesla. i live in the city, i never fill any gas until i go to trails 2-3 times a month. This is a very fun vehicle.
We have the PACIFICA plug in hybrid, every fear you have is correct. 11 trips to the dealer and its now out of warranty. No end in sight. Love the 30+ miles of electric per day but when the cooling kicks on at 3am in your garage and the fans go to HIGH.
I know a person with the 2022 model year of this vehicle and he says it has been in the shop for repairs for more days than he has had it available to drive.
I have a 2021 4xE (4 by E) and it definitely outperforms my previous Jeeps in power and handling. Love it especially the horsepower and torque. 375 horsepower and 475 ft lb of torque. I get gasoline every other month and it is a Jeep not a truck. As far as materials, it's pretty nice leather and a great interior and people of normal size don't have the problems getting in and out of the back seat as you mentioned.
I have a 2023 Rubicon 4XE as well. I think he got confused with the battery location though. It's actually in the inside built in under the rear seat to keep it protected. I also get gas every other month and I commute 20 to 25 miles a day for work on pure electric, and I will run the gas engine to refresh the fuel / oil on the weekends for longer commutes. With the Hp and Torque this thing is in a league of its own. I know he seems to be troubled by the price of the 4XE, but you get a $7500 rebate that applies to a lease on the spot which I got, then I turned around and refinanced it at $56k. He really should go look at the price of the 392 lol. But to compare it to a GX460, those get horrendous MPG. Not even as capable as a Rubicon 4xe. He should look at the cost of ownership of a GX460, maintenance costs, fuel consumption/spending etc etc then do a proper comparison to a 4xe. Not to mention the high fuel prices we just saw at almost $6 a gallon which has came down to $4 ish.. What's not to say that we will not see those prices again soon or even higher. The people that do buy the 4xe, mostly get it for the MPG savings during breaks of off-roading. The 4xe doesn't have any competition, it's a PHEV that excels at everything off road while being able to use it as a daily commuter on pure electric. Even when the battery runs out, it then turns into a pure hybrid automatically and still gives me 26mpgs. On Electric, I'm at 49 to 51 E-Mpg. Great review, but to see how many Wranglers are out on the road today says alot. But he was right about the back seat getting in and out. That latch has gotten me a few times and I'm fit lol
@@Stephen-G I agree with you. I think he was totally wrong about the interior as well. It's a really nice interior compared to my older Jeeps. He's obviously not an engineer and didn't do his research or even go over the specs of the vehicle. He did okay at explaining the technology but I don't think he's all that versed, he called it a truck and he didn't even know that it's called a 4xE (4xE) I bought the Sahara high altitude and this Jeep does everything on those technical trails up in Colorado that my 2013 Jeep did but it does it better and with more power. The fact that they now have all-wheel drive added to the four-wheel drive mix makes it a lot better driving through snow and rain at highway speed than my old one.
@@Stephen-G There is no free lunch in the energy conversion world Stephen - ever!!! All the benefits you stated, HP, Tqe, are not free. And just wait for your direct injected engine to carbon up, which it will, then you will be in a world of hurt not to mention all the complex mess designed by Chrysler!!! No thanks, I'll keep my internal combustion JK! I'm not racing anyone in my Jeep - if I want to go fast, I'll drive my Lamborghini!!
I have a 22 4xe, and I'm a Realtor in mountainous area of the country. I can't get stuck or break down. And when gas ⛽️ hit nearly $4 a gallon I needed something that I wasn't spending $100 every few days on gas. I landed on the 4xe, the other choice was the Volvo plug in electric. It gets 40+ miles on straight electric. I decided on the 4xe Wrangler because of the terrain and snow that I deal with. Now there's Cherokee 4Xe. But I love the the Wrangler, my clients love it too. I chose the Sahara because the ride is so much better than Rubicon and I'm not rock climbing. Yes I get that the nicer trim is $60,000+. But you don't need to spend that, get a Willie's. My 4xe is at a comparable price point and a way more complex and capable vehicle and it has something those other SUVs don't, a roll cage .
This review is refreshingly thorough and uniquely candid. My jaundiced eye opinion stems from 55 years of wheeling Utah slickrock and Colorado peaks; repairing inevitable trail breakdowns and getting out. Steve Rowe pretty well summed up future prospects for what owners of such complex, off-road cargo will be dealing with after the factory is released from its warranty obligations.
The Grand Cherokee 4xe is a healthy balance. Family hauler and weekend warrior. I love it, save on fuel on my commute to work, still comfortable for the family and I off-road on the weekends.
Oh joy! My wife just bought a 2024 Willys xe. After listening to this thorough review, am I ever glad she DID shell out for a 5 year extended warranty. Apples 'n oranges, but other than off-roading, this thing is a ticking time bomb compared to my 2023 CR-V Sport Touring hybrid. :( THANKS for the excellent, thorough, honest review! I'm not going to show it to my wife, because she already plunked down HER money, and WE have to plunk down some money for rewiring our garage even for Level 1 charging. She already had 3 Wrangler Rubicons prior to the Willys, so there's no turning her away from Jeep (I'd have rather she gotten a Subaru Outback Wilderness, but she HAS to have the detachable hardtop. Let's face it, when it comes to electronics and overall reliability, the Subaru leaves Jeep Wranglers in the dust, and it would have been okay for the only off-roading we do...one week on Outer Banks beaches.) As for me, I'm grateful for my wonderful CRV Sport Touring hybrid w/AWD here in Buffalo. Of course, I have no plans on doing any off-roading with my Honda.
Cars used to have foldable windshields before ac came along. Also in ww2 Jeeps used to be driven windshield down. A reflection could give you away and then you’d have a bad day.
Thanks for pointing out the "alarm" when somebody walking down the street opens my hood!! I laughed out loud! Just got my first off road vehicle at age 59 last tuesday. THIS exact vehicle. Really cool watching this. Thanks for the very detailed look. If i ever hear that alarm at night, i am running out front!
I'm on 9000 mile total, 1800 of those gas. I love this vehicle. And it's now the number one selling hybrid. Sahara because I'm off road, but not rocks and I need an Explorer ride. I need 4WD. If your stuck in traffic jam the AC and Heat still work. You can't compare to a Honda or most other SUVs, It's a different market. I didn't get lockers or the retractable top. I have never heard the electric power steering make a sound. Take yours for service. I get 24mpg gas, 99+ Electtic. There is no drift with Sahara. If I was going to do it again perhaps Grand Cherokee 4Xe which is also rugged. So far it's very heavy duty and you need only rust proof the frame, it's body is all Aluminum. I like the rear mount tire, it stays good. I purchased the service plan. I love the Ford Service Plan, but yet to use the Jeep plan. One complaint, it came with a tow package but not a brake controller. It's another $245 on sale with Mopar. It's got a ton of power, and speed. It's competition is the Bronco Raptor. But this baby gets 24 mpg gas and tax credit is $7500 for now. 8 year battery Warrenty. It's made in Toledo, Ohio. The material is meant to be rained on, sun resistant. There is no roof most summers. It's very functional for those that buy it. It meets their needs. I have watched so many reviews on the 4xe, I would never get the Lexus GX. But if I did or compard it to a Cherokee And it is the coolest thing on the planet. I comprised nothing. 24 MPG
I’ve had several wranglers and I love my 22 JLUS 4XE and so do my kids. It’s the fun vehicle and I wouldn’t trade a wrangler for anything else. Like he said, you either love it or you don’t and honestly none of his reasons for his dislikes really bother me.
This is a great video! As a Wrangler 4xe owner, I learned so much, about my vehicle even more than any other forum or video, so thank you for posting this. I'm very happy with my 4xe and so far, it's been (knock on wood) reliable. That being said, I'm really glad I have a unlimited mileage complete bumper to bumper warranty for 7 years, as I did not really understand how complex this Jeep is until I sat down and watched this video....thanks so much for posting this!

I just dumped my 2.0T Wrangler. I had to top off the coolant reservoir 2x in less than 26k miles and I never once observed leaks. I like to think I saved myself from a time bomb.
Randy from Auto Auction Rebuilds had a late model Wrangler with crank windows. He hardly drove it and got rid of it in less than 6 months of ownership.
I feel like my uncle just knocked some sense into me. Brutal honesty is so welcome & I salute you Sir! Would you give us suggestions as to what other vehicles we should focus on with an eye towards reliability?
It was interesting until he said "Gas Only". This vehicle(I own one)is never a "gas only" vehicle. It is always a Hybrid. It can operate on E SAVE to maintain electric for later use, but it still uses the electric to assist the gas engine. Always a hybrid.
I have same one and love the interior and it drives really well and very comfortable, also easiest car to drive I have owned. And I've had 10 brand new cars in past 15 yrs
i was on the market for a Jeep Rubicon or Lexus NX, this review helped me a lot, thank you so much, there are so many true opinions that matter so much for customers, well done
Second video I’ve watched of yours, really love your perspective. It’s nice to get a technical analysis past written specs, but where you are actually showing the pros or cons.
Watching you for years! Excellent comprehensive videos! Especially Toyota general reviews on what to buy or not to buy from reliability prospective! Those are indeed unique insides, not many channels do, from a professional Toyota man. Thanks for all this work! I think intended audience are the drivers and DIY repair men, like myself, and cars enthusiasts, cause those people after purchasing a car will be laying under it and cursing themselves while bumping in the multiple shortcomings most of the modern cars have. At least watching these kind of reviews they'll be warned on all those good and bad things coming down the road. Again there is no so many channels like this, it's either detailed ext/int and driving review or manuals how to fix and mod things. Was considering buying old TJ a few years back, as a true 4 wheel drive, not abused in original state, cold not find in a decent shape for the price, ended up buying 10 y old Grand Vitara V6, with low milage and decent shape and never regretted since: from inside has everything, and still can deliver mild off roading, when needed.
I have been researching these for just over a year watching TH-cam videos and the good things and the complaints I am not sold on the Rubicon four by E at $70,000 plus and then you get the fox shocks you're looking at almost $100,000 to get something that's going to ride nice and take you up in the hills and play all at the same time for those of you that do on a Rubicon four by E that's fine I would prefer getting the Rubicon 4 x 4 Without the electrics and spend $75,000 to get what I want and save myself $25-$30,000 great video thank you
I use to have a black 2005 scion xb which I call it my box car. That lil guy was small but mighty. Im in the Central Valley and I’ve taken my box car on so many adventures, drove 6+ hours to Southern California, went up north about 2+ hours in the winding mountains, drove to Sparks, NV for a lantern festival etc and it was my daily commuter to work. Drove 5x a week to work and work was about 45mins-1 hour depending on traffic. I miss that car and Im sad I no longer have but I think it was my box car that made me want a Jeep wrangler now. Can’t wait to get my Jeep wrangler in the near future to take it out on adventures!
I recently rented a Jeep Compass 4xe. I was eager to test it. The car didn’t have good power. It doesn’t have good fuel economy (for road trips) and as an EV the power and range were lack luster. In fact, with a small fuel tank and small battery you’ll find yourself looking for gas stations all the time. I found that to me, it doesn’t do anything well but hopefully the wrangler is a much better option.
I have a 2020 Wrangler 4 door. It is my first Jeep and I love it. Im going to be looking at the 4XE. I love the interior. It what you need and nothing you dont.
I have this exact same spec (except I have body coloured fenders), and I couldn't be happier. This is my family car and we've had it for 10 month and over 12,000 kms. Yes, you mentioned some of the compromises but surprisingly for how capable, reliable, and efficient this has been for our specific use case, it's perfect! We plow through the Canadian blizzards with ease, I'm averaging 1,300 kms per tank of gas (since most of my driving is within the city), and my kids know its an event when we step inside our Rubicon. Best of all, the wifey loves it and enjoys driving it too. I installed a nice pair of SB side steps and no one has complained about getting in or out. We have a carseat in the rear with no issues too. The ONLY thing I'll complain about is a sway bar disconnect issue I've recently had - I can't seem to get it to disconnect; it just says 'service sway bar system' and my dealership doesn't know what to do. Otherwise my family and I love this thing and I hope it stays reliable for several years to come. Thank you for the excellent in depth review!
Not quite 2 yrs but I'm back. So almost 1.5 yrs and +20,000 kms in; drives like a beauty and have had no issues. The mileage is still incredible, dare I say even better. I'm now averaging about 1,700 kms per tank. This is because on an average day, we're within the 45-50km battery range and there's a plethora of chargers where I am. A definite go from me on this beast. Super happy with this purchase.
I'm a JLU-Rubicon owner with the 2.0L. I love it. I couldn't get myself to go 4XE for the price tag and how many EV miles you get. If it was 60-100 miles on EV range for the price tag of a 4XE Rubicon I'd do it... After watching this video this looks all complicated. Anything that would go wrong, would be high labor costs at a stealership. Interested to see how this progress throughout the years to come.
I just bought a 2023 Jeep Serria 4xe, and the sticker price was $63k, and holy cow, still no power seats, thank god in 2024, they will have them. The 4xe only gets you 32 miles of juice, and that's it! It takes 13hrs to charge on 110v or spend $600 to get a level 2 charger, and then you can fast charge it in 2 hrs. Thank god I was given $ 13k in rebates, and I was thankful my 2021 Jeep was worth more than I owed on it. I have only owned my new Jeep for 2 weeks, and when my lease is up in 2 years I most likely will jump out of this 4xe, unless it gives you more electric range, and I can find more charging stations.
Thanks for an honest review of an honest truck. Perhaps there’s only one other name in automotive world that’s just as iconic as the Jeep. That’s Porsche 911. Both have had small, constant improvements over decades, yet they deviated from their original design and iconic looks very little. You can make the old argument about Porsche, the German and Jeep, the Chrysler not being the most reliable cars (especially from a Toyota mechanic mindset) but there has to be a level of respect for them sticking to their roots and not losing their face in the sea of modern transportation, that (at least by looks) is a lot of the same, badged differently.
I’d probably skip the 4xe and the 4 door version- I’ve always preferred the 2 door short wheelbase. Manual, 3.6 and just maintain it religiously. Good review! Love the ins and outs from someone who knows what he’s looking at.
Keep an eye on the manuals. I was on a wrangler site where his clutch went out and his whole jeep was engulfed in flames. Some sort of hardware recall on the manuals.
Although the V6 sounds like the right choice, i'm blown away at how quicky the valvetrain wears out (rocker assembly and camshafts) at around 70k miles on the 3.6
@@dnlpark I own a 4" lifted on 38s JLUR 2018 bought brand new. We didn't have diesels back then. I'd go diesel in a second if I could go back. It pisses me off that we had no idea that was coming. I'm not building another JL mine is done. I get 11-13mpg with the additional weight and even worse in the mountains. Diesel would fix all of that. I hate my gas mileage compared to the other options I have to get gas every 2 hours. Penta sucks. I'd also go AWD and move over Rubicon body parts instead of 4wd but Im in snow a lot
No one were buying these, but the 4xe is extremely cheap and popular to lease last year. There is a thread with over 33,000 posts long on Leasehackr dedicated to leasing the 4xe.
I had a gx470 before my 4xe. Two totally different vehicles for different people. I loved my gx470, great vehicle, but I would not trade my 4xe for one.
@@ro0ster648I think the 4xe accounts for something like 25% of wrangler sales, and a lot of those are purchases, not leases. Most wrangler owners customize their Jeep and many off-road, and for that purchasing is better. If you want to get your feet wet into jeep culture, then leasing is a really good option.
Reviews provided by automotive journalists do little to answer my questions related to design and predicted reliability / quality. I am retired but I used to be an autobody repairman and eventually graduated an Industrial Engineer. The information that you provide is both interesting and of great value to me. I am in the market for a minivan and I was very interested in the Toyota Sienna. I decided against it because there is a possibility that I might have to leave it parked for a few months at time while travelling overseas which could be harmful to the hybrid battery. The second downside is that the second row seats are not removable which limits its use as a multipurpose vehicle. I have pretty good luck with Japanese vehicles, so I decided to order a Honda Odyssey. I really appreciate all of the work that you put into these videos. Thank You and keep them coming!
Roughly a year ago I was in the market for a Gladiator/Wrangler, Mojave/Rubicon trim. I took both for a test drive and couldn't believe how underpowered it was, not to mention the availability wasn't good. I decided to wait and recently picked up the Willy's 4XE Wrangler. The power was night and day difference! and maybe it's due to the center of gravity on the 4XE but it seemed to handle much better as well. MPG is terrible on a regular Jeep and with the 4XE it's waaaay better. We'll see how it fairs further down the road but initial impressions are much better than I got with the non hybrid models.
I agreed I drove a Sahara 3.6 and that thing was a bit the slowest but certainly not fast but it drove horribly. My 4xe on all terrains drive wayyyyy better and I’m sure it’s due to the batteries weight making it more controllable on highway.
I wanted a Jeep JK Rubicon back in 2016. My friend bought one and whenever we went anywhere on the road he would have to saw back and forth on the steering wheel trying to keep it going straight. Its road manners are horrible. I figured out over time that it was more off road than I would ever use and not very good on the road. I eventually bought a Toyota 4runner off road premium with kdss. It's more off road capable than I'll probably ever need and it has good on road manners. It also has comfortable back seats with lots of leg room. Plus there's the Toyota reliability. Both my friend and my niece regret their wrangler purchases and would rather have something with better on road manners.
I work on my own vehicles, including flashing and updating the control units. I’ve owned Rubicons since the very first TJ version came out. I had a JL rubicon and went back to a JK because of the JL steering play issue. I’ve also owned LR D1, D2, LR4 and now a D5. Even with the 10 year warranty on the battery, I’m not sold. The 4xe technology is new. I’ll wait until the technology advances more. I hate the carbon build up with direct injection. The inverters fail and are on back order. If the battery fails, good luck getting the Jeep back in less than a month
My wife and daughter went for the Jeep Wrangler just for the look and the look only in 2018, now they are going to do it again and the Look is everything that matters for ladies, the 2018 JL never go off road, the top is never open because dust could get inside.
Youre right about renting one to see how it is for a few days of driving. We had the soft top one for a couple of days and on the highway it sure got alot of wind noise and what was odd is the Jeep would hardly drive in electric mode and my guess is because its a 130 horsepower ev motor trying to lug a 5000 pound square around with people and air conditioning. The range on it too, first time i ever seen the economy meter go down as you drive on the highway, but it was excess of 75 miles an hour and with its shape its never gonna get good gas unless youre under 50 mph is my guess. A fun vehicle but just not the best for street driving, but definitely cool looking.
Hi. Really like your video. I was looking for a honest video for the 4xe and I finally found it . I AM A 4X4 GUY !!! Have a 1990 Jeep Cherokee, 1988 Jeep Comanche, 2020 Jeep Gladiator, 1999 F150 4x4, RAM 2019 Power Wagon . After watching the video , I’m not thinking of buying the 4xe , because all the hoses, pumps , tight spaces, no starter or alternator, parts exposed underneath it, too many parts for future replacement etc… I am wondering when the charging system won’t work or etc … Now I am thinking for the 392. For those persons who want to buy a 4x4 truck just off-roading, don’t buy the 4xe, buy a gas Wrangler is you are going to be most of the time off-roading. Jeep is not a street vehicle for daily basis !!!, they are not stable on Highway… In addition, it would be better if the 4xe came hybrid without plug-in feature, like Toyota or Lexus Hybrids … Please make a honest video of the HUMMER EV !!! Thanks for your video!!!
I’ve got a ‘13’ 2dr Jeep Wrangler Rubicon as a daily driver and weekend off-roading. Pushing 80,000 something miles now. Only vehicle, I bought it brand new in 2013. I’ve got a Twin Brother that has the same Jeep Wrangler and only a few more miles on it. So far the ‘13’ model year has been good to us. We have owned 8 Jeep Wranglers over the years starting with a 1991 Wragler, man I do miss that one. If I was going to buy a new Jeep it would be the cheapest one they sell with a manual transmission. No Extras Gizmos.
You Are Right,The Jeep Wrangler Like The 79-Series Toyota Land cruiser Is Just Made For One Purpose,Tackling Bad Roads/No Roads(Offroading).,& They Are Also Expensive But People Love & Buy Them.
Enjoyed your review of the 4(by)e, also saw your XC90 review and really liked it. I’ve owned my Rubicon 4xe since May 2021. I love my Jeep, but I use my Rubicon for what it was intended for, rock crawling and back country driving. It is not a comfortable, easy every day driver. Get a Sahara, get a Willys, don’t get a Rubi, unless you are going to use it for back country driving. Mine has now been highly modified, 3-1/2” lift, 35” tires on wider wheels, adjustable reservoir shocks, full body armor underneath, winch, real rock rails, etc. The torque on the 4xe “amazes” old school jeepers, even when compared to the 392. I get my torque at 1/2 RPM. It is awesome for rock crawling. But you pay a price, with an extra 700 lbs of weight, plus you have to learn to “two” pedal in obstacles to keep constant torque on the tires. BTW, the battery is under the back seat and the gas tank is only 2 gals less than the standard tank. With the stock 33” tires I got 21 miles of all electric range, with the 35”, I get 19 miles. When solely driving around town, and frequent charging, I’ve seen high 30MPG. But real MPG with the engine only is about 19.
Surprisingly there were some aspects that I could live with, solid axles, underside robustness etc. I think the engine and hybrid setup would prevent me from buying one. Interesting presentation AMD, thank for the education.
Thank you for your candid review. I knew the 4xe was more complicated but I did not realize how much more complicated. I'm going to hold off buying the 4xe and just stick to the 3.6 v6 and manual tranny combo. I at least have a fighting chance at making my own repairs with that.
I'm not picking on Jeep at all, but that seems like a really small motor to have, though turbo charged, to be pushing around that heavy of a vehicle. A lot of strain I would imagine on that motor with the weight of the vehicle and turbo pushing extra air into it. I guess time will tell if the internals will hold up long term.
AMD, Kudos to the brave people at Jeep. After your evaluation of the Pacifica last time, I am surprised to see Jeep/Chrysler/ Fiat/Peugeot/ Stellantis sent you another car 😉 Let's hope some day you have a solid axle Land Cruiser 70 Series in your shop to inspect.
I watched the Pacifica review and now this Jeep review. I wouldn't hesitate to buy either. I like to see under the hood and the underside. I take his opinion with a grain of salt. He's just one mechanic. You could find another mechanic that'll disagree with his assessment. Take, for example, he didn't like the Pacifica liftgate button being on the side rather than the top. He couldn't understand why they'd do that, while it was obvious to me.
I would love to see you have a segment where you discuss the blistering paint issue that’s plaguing the JL’s since they switched to aluminum starting in ‘18. Our 2019 Rubicon went into the dealership today after making the appointment 4 months ago. They will have it 3-4 weeks repaint the hood and all 4 doors….on a vehicle that has only 20k miles on it. 3 of our friends that have JL’s all have the same issue. The blistering occurs at the door hinges, door edge, hood hinges, hood edge and rear tailgate hinge. 5 years later, Stellantis/Jeep still hasn’t done anything to fix the underlying issue. They just continue to roll them off the assembly line and fix them when the paint starts bubbling. Sad thing is consumers continue to buy them without being aware of the issue that will arise a year or two down the road. We love our Wrangler but this issue is truly sickening.
I have the regular V6 Rubicon, it's a two-door. It has been running solid so far, and I religiously service it. Pentastar V6 is decent, and the 8-speed ZF transmission is phenomenal.
33:10 I have no trouble making calls in this truck. It's a painted hardtop Rubi. That said, the overall point is valid: comfort features will definitely be better in most other SUV's. But where that's the case, you can't take the top off of em.
Thank you very much, I have had 2 jeeps. one in 1983 , a A Scrambler, and a 2008 Wrangler Sahara. I love being without the doors and the roof and it is perfect in snow and mud. I was interested in this because of the electric part, I drive 12 miles to work and 12 miles home so should not use much gas if any? That is why, but when you said the 70k sticker price, that is changing my mind. Either way, very detailed, and I have enjoyed your channel. Thank you!
We just purchased the 4Xe Wrangler in September '02 and after only three weeks and 1,200 miles, we got the red turtle of death. Now here we are in February with a lemon lawsuit going against Jeep because we still don't have our Jeep back and they can't seem to get the part they need for it. Wish we would have done our homework a little closer to see how bad and unreliable these new hybrids were. What I don't understand is when the EV system shuts down, why in the hell can't we still use the perfectly good gas engine to drive the car. Nope once the EV part shut down, we were reduced to 3-5 mph of speed on the highway. We could have gotten seriously hurt in an accident.
I wish I would have seen this review before I got one. I have a 22’ 4xe Rubicon and I’m paying way too much for it to be in the shop for a 3rd time in 8 months. Thankful it’s only a lease and everything is covered but the reliability is trash for me. Check engine light at 4k miles is ridiculous. I love the body, handling and over all look of the Wrangler but I don’t want to have to worry if it’s going to breakdown every time I leave the house. Thanks to your review of the 4Runner, that will be my next vehicle.
I think people (who don't off-road) mainly buy them to get through Chicago winters or anywhere there's lots of SNOW! THAT'S when they have their fun! And of course, like you said, to look cool! 😀👌
Now it's an abomination of what it use to be much like everything else in the Bizarro Upside Down Clown World!
Add the GX4670/GX460 to the list. I paid $7k lees for a used GX460 then a comparable used 4Runner
I am 75 years old, I owned many other cars ie Volvo, Toyota, GM, Ford, Subaru etc and a year ago I purchased a 2015 Jeep Sahara which is in mint condition with 98,000km
This is the best and nicest car I have ever purchased
If I could go back in life that is the only car I would ever purchase thank you JEEP
I don't know why but I just really like this car, especially the exterior, it's a beauty!
When you are explaining the engine complexities of this vehicle, the funny part that caught me " But wait there's more"....
I will stick with my old TJ, it's very simple to work on. 4.0L straight 6 runs forever.
Jeep’s have become an American Land Rover. Expensive upfront and expensive to maintain.
@@mplslawnguy3389 yep, it's ridiculous what people are willing to pay. And is there a basic truck anymore?
@@johng.4959 I bought one in ‘17, as basic as I could build it. Still $39,000 and has a lot of stuff I didn’t want but you have no choice like electronic transfer case, gear shifter, MDS.

Quite possibly the best review for any vehicle I’ve ever seen! Subscribed without hesitation! Thank you!

That 4.0 was a fine engine.
I have a 2016 Jeep hydro blue..I see everyone peeking on a nice day or a snow day…Jeeps are cool. Little kids in carriages on the street always point at it. It does something to the human eye!
"Let's talk about what I don't like and let's start with the whole thing..." 😂

Hey I didn’t vote for those laws.
Thanks love your shows
The battery is located under the rear seats. Under the car are HV modules/coolers/heaters.
He should have bought the 2023 model 😂
Way better review than what most provide. Great review
@@Stephen-G Now that is a veeery important thing to get wrong. Good catch!

I feel like my uncle just knocked some sense into me. Brutal honesty is so welcome & I salute you Sir! Would you give us suggestions as to what other vehicles we should focus on with an eye towards reliability?
I own 2018 wrangler unlimited v6 and I agree with you for daily drive not good, just like a toy it's fine.
Just a quick correction, the heft of the battery il located right underneath the back seat. The bottom is only the connection to it :)
It was interesting until he said "Gas Only". This vehicle(I own one)is never a "gas only" vehicle. It is always a Hybrid. It can operate on E SAVE to maintain electric for later use, but it still uses the electric to assist the gas engine. Always a hybrid.
This guy got so many things wrong. I own one also
I have same one and love the interior and it drives really well and very comfortable, also easiest car to drive I have owned.
He got so many things wrong about the 4xe
Super informative- the most helpful review of the Wrangler and 4XE I’ve seen.
about to buy one and your professional approach is a gem!
Please come back after 2 yrs. Let us know
@@GetRICH_or_GetWhooped I will do my best and hopefully nothing major (knock on wood).
@@GetRICH_or_GetWhooped here after 2 years. No issues, love it.
My 2010 Dodge Grand caravan plows through Canadian winters with ease to.
I got complaints from my HOA about construction 🚧 noises at 4:30am… didn’t know why I was charged $3k for noncompliance. Now I know why...
The pressure plate is too weak on the standard trans
Although the V6 sounds like the right choice, i'm blown away at how quicky the valvetrain wears out (rocker assembly and camshafts) at around 70k miles on the 3.6
There is an issue with current manual transmission. They are available to built on their website but there are not taking orders or being delivered.
Its a fantastic car. Luv it. Its a masterpiece. Its a true icon. Its a legend. Its a so much fun. And its tough.
Wrangler batteries are inside the car under the back seat. GC 4Xe has them underneath. Can you do a review on the GC?
$70k? ... you can buy a GX460 for less!
The GX will still be running in 20 years. I would rather have the comfort and reliability it gives.
@@davidcarrico3385 thank you tell ‘em they are completely for different purposes
No harm will come letting the 4xe sit for months . It won't affect the life of the HV battery
I’ve got a ‘13’ 2dr Jeep Wrangler Rubicon as a daily driver and weekend
off-roading.
I like the fact that the front fenders can’t come off if they get damaged they’re plastic so you can replace some easy
Thanks the for the thorough review. At least now I know which "trucks" to avoid.
Thanks for the amazing review.
Surprisingly there were some aspects that I could live with, solid axles, underside robustness etc. I think the engine and hybrid setup would prevent me from buying one. Interesting presentation AMD, thank for the education.
Buy the regular one with the 3.6 L Pentastar V6. The Pentastar is a solid motor. One of them recently hit 626,000 miles
you are not making any sense.. Just buy the normal one.. so stupid.
Would the Diesel a better option ?
Anything turbocharged needs 3-5k oil changes and good synthetic oil. Unless you don’t want to keep it long term, then do what the book says.
Very informative even for someone who doesn’t know anything. Great video!!!
All car makers could just learn from AMD. This is a benefit!
Reviews don't mean anything. It is a Jeep Wrangler, it will sell like hotcakes
PHEV can make sense for camping/orelanding, provided it is easy to plug in equipment like the fridge to it.
Good point. I have heard this.
We need your review on a powerstroke. Maybe even a look at a different era like the 6.0 liter excursion❤
Would love to see you review a regular v6 automatic rubicon jeep.
I have the regular V6 Rubicon, it's a two-door. It has been running solid so far, and I religiously service it. Pentastar V6 is decent, and the 8-speed ZF transmission is phenomenal.
Love my 4xe
I got the 3.6 etorque mild hybrid wrangler
33:10 I have no trouble making calls in this truck. It's a painted hardtop Rubi. That said, the overall point is valid: comfort features will definitely be better in most other SUV's. But where that's the case, you can't take the top off of em.
Helpful review. Now to show it to my wife... she wants this car... wish me luck!
That’s awful. I hate to see people having issues with new vehicles. I hope you get it bought back.
I really like you men, you are so technical in reviewing cars!
Trade it in while you can, love my 4runner even more after seeing this video, good luck
