Wow, today I was literally went back to watch the 2015 MacBook Pro vid you made and another one? Damn. Your video quality has changed so drastically over the past year. Most underrated TH-cam channel, keep it going! :)
Evening Buddy, Great video thank you. I've just done the upgrade with the same adapter and thought the standoff was broke on mine too. I did however work out that these adapters are slightly different to usual ones. What you need to do is place the gold stand off at the end of the ssd in line with the hole and then attach the screw from BELOW the adapter to keep it in place. Obviously this can only be done whilst the adapter is out of the MacBook but hope that makes sense.
Ok - Anyone who watches this and does this upgrade, don't be shocked if it does NOT go this smoothly. A few recommendations... 1. I had to create a Mojave boot installer by formatting an existing flash drive (the adapter I bought even had a note in the packaging telling me I would have to do this.) This is due to the firmware on an older mac not being able to recognize the new NVMe firmware. Without this step, the new SSD will not be recognized. (I don't know how he got around this step). Look around youtube on how to do this, it's not too bad - it worked on the first try for me, luckily I had a spare 16gb flash drive laying around. 2. Don't worry about installing a time machine backup onto the new SSD from recovery mode. When in recovery mode, just install the MacOS it recommends, if your boot installer doesn't automatically do this for you, and then do the OS upgrade from the desktop. After all this is working properly use migration assistant to install your time machine backup. 3. I used an old car GPS window suction cup holder to pop the lid off my Mac, it definitely made life easier. 4. Buy a decent tool kit, maybe like the ones from ifixit - don't limit yourself to only the T5 and P5 - I ended up also needing a small phillips head that was fortunately included in the toolkit i bought. I got mine on Amazon for $20.
I’m so glad about your comment. You have saved me. It was so frustrating to me when I face the problem but I followed all your step and it worked. Thanks dude. You are awesome.
Thanks for posting this video. I couldn’t have done this upgrade without you. My laptop now writes at 2200MB/s and reads almost 3000MB/s! I used the new Sabrent 512GB drive. Only cost me $60 and I quadrupled my storage. My laptop has never worked so well. You’re awesome!
8:11 it’s actually Option-command-R for internet recovery/upgrade to the latest Mac OS since command-R is recovery mode from the current Mac OS installed on the disk (if it is available)
side note: I'd rather format the drive with APFS than HFS+ (alias Mac OS Extended (Journaled)) since APFS is the more recent filesystem. Other than that, great vid! Didn't know that the storage of this macbook was this easily accessible
I made this on my 2017 macbook air, and it reduced the time on battery, but i noticed that depends what kind of drive you use. NVME drives with cache cause less impact on battery life.
No drives with a DRAM chip will use more power and run hotter, and there’s no 2242 sized drives would come with a DRAM chip. Find a drive that has a lower power rating would be better.
Watching this video right now on the exact machine that you're describing. I can't believe how lucky I got. SSD has been such a pain for me for so long on this thing, I'm so happy to hear that I don't have to get rid of my computer! Thank you! I can't wait to start spinning up VMs and all kinds of stuff on this thing lol
Just a suggestion to anyone giving this a go. If you use command option r on boot it will pull the latest version of macOS so you won't have to update after setting up the mac. Command R will just pull the version of macos that the device came with from factory.
I ordered the parts last night and will be doing the same for my wife’s 2017 non-touch 13” MBP within the next couple of days. Going from 256GB to 1TB for under $100.
just for Monterey be sure to upgrade once on the Apple SSD, then go back to your Sabernet and upgrade again. Monterey comes with a firmware update that detects if it's OEM ssd or not. But after the firmware is updated you can update to Monterey on your biggo ssd. It's the same for 2015 mbp btw ;)
@@dhcmrlchtdj-1 this has nothing to do with any backup. To install Monterey on a non-apple SSD, the Monterey has to have been installed before on the MacBook in question once (with the og apple ssd). Monterey installation updates the firmware- but it only does this when it can verify the ssd. So if you try to install without this step, the installation straight onto a non-apple ssd; it will just crash and reboot.
Other comments have covered most things around the stand-off but if you use cmd-opt-r that will do internet recovery of the latest OS the Mac supports. Also when at the installation stage there is an option to use Time Machine so that is the best point to do it. Great video overall though.
If you're getting an error that says that you cannot connect to Apple's servers, instead of pressing command and R, you should press option command and R. This should bring you to the newer utility where you can actually install a newer Mac OS version. And if you're still getting that error you should try and connect to another Wi-Fi if possible. These two steps helped me resolve the issue.
You can technically upgrade the new M1 as well, but you need to re-solder the old SSD and solder the new one. There is no serialization (for now ?? ) on the SSD

I just upgraded my 2017 MBP 13 WITH A WD SN740 NVME 512GB with this adapter and everything including sleep works great. Im getting about 2500/2300 MBps read write speeds. Which beats out a lot of the 2022 Mac base models. The whole combo cost (new parts) about $45 USD off eBay. I recommend the NFHK adapter, it works great. Just remember the gold piece is the retention mechanism that holds the SSD. The gold piece has a slot to hold the SSD in perfect position. The screw goes in from the underside of the adapter to you have to assemble the SSD/ Adapter combo first! I recommend a clean install of Mac OS Ventura for max speed. I did upgrade to Sonoma with OCLP 1.3 because I use the dictation function daily for work and I was tired of VM Windows 11. Im surprised that these 2017s do handle Sonoma quite well.

I did this mod on mine a few years ago. It worked great minus upgrading the os. When there is a new major release, you have to put your old drive in and update that first. Then you can put your bigger drive back in. Minor updates worked like normal. It was def worth it. On the 128 I didn’t have enough space to do an update without taking everything off the drive, apps and all.
Also it's not a 'mod'. Previously upgrading your computer was something anyone and everyone could, should and would do. Stop acting like fiddling with your own hardware is strange
I had to replace the board on mine so I went ahead and did this mod as well. I'm pretty happy with it. I had an i5 with 8 gigs of ram, bought a board with an i7 with 16 gigs of ram
When swapping a drive on any MacBook makes that TRIMM support is YES in the system report under SATA/SATA Express. If not google how to turn it on using Terminal it not only helps with battery usage but also makes the MacBook so much faster. It’s really easy to do.
p5 and t5 are two types of screw driver heads, P stands for pentalobe, it's the fucking star shaped screws that apple use with 5 points that makes it inconvenient for customers to open up their own devices. On the other hand, T stands for torx, it's also star shaped, but it has 6 points, and you can use a flat head with the right size to work with torx screws.
In the event anyone finds this in the future you can actually skip the whole upgrading section by doing command option R to get an updated Internet recovery as that will always search for the newest OS compatible for the device.
I found these Sabrent 2242 drives to be problematic with the A1708. It would occasionally crash and boot to a black screen. I searched the interweb and found this to be a common issue.
An update would be nice, is it working well, is it like OEM, are there issues like wakeup, sleep? Would be nice to know of your experience overall in using a third party ssd after all these months. So we go for it or not?
I came across a bunch of old MacBook pro's and MacBook airs that I've been fixing. Even back in 2011 MacBooks were freaking beautiful. If I wouldn't have to completely relearn how to use a computer I would switch to a MacBook. Even though I'd have to give up gaming on a laptop.
Followed Wincod75’s advice and used a boot installer. I advise doing this before removing the original SSD along with the usual TM back up. Once the MacBook was started up from the boot installer and the new SSD was recognised in Disk Utility I had to complete the installation (as though it was a new computer) before it could access TM. All is now going well.
The flashing folder icon says nothing about if the Mac detects the drive or not. It actually simply means that it can’t find anything to boot from. The same flashing folder will appear without any drives installed as well.
The fatter end of that standoff can be pushed into the hole on the pcb, and it should be tight enough to hold it in. I got an identical pcb last year, and that's how it worked for me. This upgrade really breathed new life into my macbook pro. I just ordered new keycaps and hopefully will breathe new life into that damn butterfly keyboard too. With storage and keyboard issues addressed, I think these 2016/2017 macbooks can easily hit 10 years of service without feeling obsolete.
7:19 when putting this model back together you should pay attention to the clips on the lid and make sure it slides into the metal fingers on the case. Just pointing this one thing out that should make things easier.

@@ozordiprince9405 it's apple's hardware lol. They're just licensing it to you
Use Cmd + Alt + R while starting to boot into the most recent version of OS
the unintentional Samsung noise made this more entertaining.
I had to replace the board on mine so I went ahead and did this mod as well. I'm pretty happy with it.
I had an i5 with 8 gigs of ram, bought a board with an i7 with 16 gigs of ram
Awesome Video Jeff, you deserve more subs your one of the best tech TH-camr
When swapping a drive on any MacBook makes that TRIMM support is YES in the system report under SATA/SATA Express. If not google how to turn it on using Terminal it not only helps with battery usage but also makes the MacBook so much faster. It’s really easy to do.
The thing about that 2242 SSD is that it might be a bit slower than the 2280 ones and produce more heat
I used the 2280 ssd
To use 2280 ssd, wouldn’t you need to get a different adapter? Or would 2280 ssd fit the adaptor used in the video?
p5 and t5 are two types of screw driver heads, P stands for pentalobe, it's the fucking star shaped screws that apple use with 5 points that makes it inconvenient for customers to open up their own devices. On the other hand, T stands for torx, it's also star shaped, but it has 6 points, and you can use a flat head with the right size to work with torx screws.
9:59 Spongebob: Gary GGGGGAAAARRRRRYYYYYYY!!!!!!!! I'm a dirty boy.
In the event anyone finds this in the future you can actually skip the whole upgrading section by doing command option R to get an updated Internet recovery as that will always search for the newest OS compatible for the device.
"Who he hell is Gary"...lol 🤣
thank you bro, made my computer usable
FYI. You should definitely keep the original hard drive as you will need to put it back in if you ever have to take it back to apple.
I found these Sabrent 2242 drives to be problematic with the A1708. It would occasionally crash and boot to a black screen. I searched the interweb and found this to be a common issue.
What is recommended alternative, do you have a suggestion?
I believe I found one on eBay, Samsung or Toshiba brand.
An update would be nice, is it working well, is it like OEM, are there issues like wakeup, sleep? Would be nice to know of your experience overall in using a third party ssd after all these months. So we go for it or not?
Wish this man would touch my bar 😔
Wow, thank you so much for posting this video. I am in the same boat with 128gb of internal storage. Now I can do the upgrade. Thank you!
Pretty cool transition for the sponsor. 😎
I give it an 8/10, smoother than hummus but not as smooth as a fresh jar of Skippy
RIP Touch Bar 😢
I heard that if the hd is not fully compatible, there may be issues when reestarting.
She used to be Gary.
Let's just hope she's not cheating with Gary 😬
DAmmit Jeff, who is Gary?
Pro tip you don’t need to unscrew the battery screw as it doesn’t give power to the logic board unless that zip cable is plugged In
Gary ? That’s her Chad classmate.
Tempted to do this just to tinker around with mine. If only upgrading the ram was this simple
There's an even easier way: OWC sells an SSD that is specifically made for this model, no adapter. 2720MB/s, comes in up to 2TB.
Imagine if instead of Gary it said Tyrone 💀
Any update on the macbook pro 2017? Did anything happened after a year of using it?
Thank you for the video and the tips! I just upgraded today to 1TB. What a difference!
Can the standoff be put into the 2230 hole?
7:19 when putting this model back together you should pay attention to the clips on the lid and make sure it slides into the metal fingers on the case. Just pointing this one thing out that should make things easier.
me, whos never owned or used a mac in my entire life:
"hmm yes, very informative"
Louis Rossmann in his video recommends buying Macbook Pro of 2013-2014 years. 2015 (pre-butterfly) had additional potential issues, and 2016 (butterfly) and later had even more.
I just wanted to say this os really one of the best tutorials i’ve ever seen…
Hello, I saw your video and I wanna ask you: How is your MacBook right now? Everything is ok? The temperature is higher than the normal one when is working or something like this? Did you had any problems with the upgrade? Thank you so much!!!
I have no regards doing any of this, nor do I have a mac, but it’s still entertaining to watch!
Tell me more about Gary, All i wanna know now is Gary 😤
Just got me used 2017 , got me 512gb and new battery 🔋 coming hopefully it will be hear in few weeks and I’ll be up and rolling so far $500 Aud into but I running my 2011 for 11 years ao this is the prefect upgrade
you should put heatthink on that ssd.
the reason why you lost 1 hour if battery is because the drive is overheating.
open core legacy patcher. I have my 2011 2012 and 2015 running ventura and sonoma and they work perfectly and even the fans barely come on anymore. Stays cooler.I REPEAT MY 2011 and 2012 Macbook Pros run Ventura wonderfully
If you do Option + Command + R you can install the latest version directly instead of installing High Sierra first and then updating it.
Just found your channel and I’m a subscriber now. Awesome job. How did that phone call go? Lmao
DID WE EVER FIND OUT WHO GARY IS ???
3:48 my mans is a Raising Cane's fan. Much love from Louisiana ❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥
YOURE THE FIRST PERSON TO RECOGNIZE THE CUP HAHAH
@@DammitJeff Yeah man, they're everywhere down here! Do you go to school in the South?
@@aaronzacharyreed6163 Funny thing, they actually *just* recently started opening Canes here in California! The lines are insane but it’s soooo good 😍
@@DammitJeff Omg, I didn't know that!!! I'll have to try the California version when I go back!
Wish the RAM was upgradeable somehow. Got a 256/8 non touchbar 14,1. Would be fun to bump it up to 16
Most underrated TH-cam Channel. Keep up the good work mate!
the stand off screw is meant to sit against the little C shaped cut out on the drive, then the screw goes through the under side of the adapter through the hole, and screws into the stand off
I’ll never understand people who prefer physical buttons to the Touch Bar’s slider. With traditional keys you have to press anywhere from 5-15 times just to change the volume, on the Touch Bar it’s quite literally one touch and slide without having to move a finger
Failure rate. It’s incredible how often those things break, fail, crack ( since they’re made of glass ) and they’re also never a consistent set of tools it changes from app to app causing issues
"Gary? Who the hell is Gary?"
Who is going to tell him
Funny, i bought a Macbook with a dead battery (works on the charge) for 200 Euros, just to try out MacOS and coincidentally it's this exact model. Now i've got something else to do once i inevitably open it up to replace the battery, neat!
Time has changed in 2024. If you are good with soldering it is now possible to upgrade storage for ipad pro , macbook air m1 and more.
you caught me off guard with the samsung sound. definitely an underrated channel and you deserve more respect and love man! :D ❤️
What’s a samsung sound
Do you mean android
That was the default samsung ringtone one most all galaxy devices that BlackFrankFTM2 talking
Thanks for your video!
I orderd all the Parts and now its the Time, without your video i would have sold the mbp.
I was on my phone looking at something and next thing I know I hear my name. I was like wtf, no shot this guy is talking to me rn. Then I realized you had time machine file named Gary. Caught me off guard but very funny!
