I just upgraded mine albeit with the guidance from another youtuber. This is probably the best video I found for this job. Surprised you dont have more views, keep up the good work!
Since you already had a Time Machine backup from that morning, you could have erased the old drive and reinstalled a fresh MacOS. Then, you wouldn't need to worry about erasing it to remove your data when you sell it. Good video, agree with the comment regarding using a plastic tool to open.

It is not normal wear and tear, this is just a bad way to open that. Get a suction cup and lift the cover enough to insert a PLASTIC tool
