  • The Tôn Thất Đạm, a long standing market that is over 100 years old right in the heart of Saigon! This market has such a fascinating history and getting to learn and see it now is so important as this market will inevitably not exist in a few years. Due to high demand of the property, this is a hot spot for property owners.
So come with me as well tour this market to learn it’s history and delicious hidden food that it has to offer in the market.
Saigon is full of so much diversity, history, and delicious food. I cannot wait to continue to explore Saigon. To tell its stories from so many perspectives and peoples point of views. Saigon is amazing and I hope you all see that as well!
None of this would be possible without sponsors so thank you so much to A Chef’s Tour for helping make these videos a reality. If you are looking for a true local experience with delicious food then check out some of the tours they offer.

Thank you all so much for watching another episode! This one was really about a market that won’t be here in a couple years so it is a pleasure to be able to get in here and learn about it and what it means to the community.
Make sure to stay tuned in as new videos will be coming out EVERY MONDAY & THURSDAY!
I cannot stress how these videos would not be possible without achefstour.com/ so please check them out if you’re interested.

Another well-made, documentary-style video, Max! I love that the story of the market and the locals to the forefront. And while we've lost a bit of the connection to you due to the documentary style rather than vlog style, I really dig what you're doing. I know you're still experimenting with the look and feel and taking people's comments into consideration. But I have to say, it really feels like you're building something unique and special here. Looking forward to seeing what you do going forward!

The new videos are really informative and diverse, which I really like. However, if you interact more with audiences by somehow, the videos will be more exciting. From my blur memory, I don't think Tôn Thất Đạm market existence is longer than 50 yrs. It was as semi illegal flea market or so. It was definitely a DRY not Wet market then. Why semi?
Early 1970s I was still a primary school kid. Ton That Dam was a place selling Textiles & ILLEGAL products: PX (Post Tax or 0% import tax or tariff) only catered for the US. GIs. The GIs got a list of what to buy ( from their local "partners" & later sold at Tôn Thất Đạm mainly cigarettes, Boos, perfumes, glassware, watches, electric fans, white goods, electronic products like radio, cassettes, TV. All of these were supposed to bear a full brunt of 300% import + luxury tax (we were a poor country at war). Not only PX goods but also stolen needy products eg. sugar, rice, cooking oil & military rations with a big, clear caveats on the packages: Hàng Viện Trợ Cấm Bán or Quân Tiếp Vụ = AID from USA- NOT for SALES or MILITARY SUPPLY. I walked by my late uncle who loved Phillip Morris ciggies on Tôn Thất Đạm occasionally for a pack Phillip Morris, the seller ran away just before a police raid (the police informed them before the raid. The marketeers knew the police schedules. Usually 1 raid per 2 hours daily) We just stood there patiently for less than 10 minutes the sellers came back. Then we got the ciggies & went to nearby Chí Tài restaurant with its signature dish Cocotte de Lapin/Civet for super.
After 1975 Ton That Dam 'market' sold the same products as 2nd hand. Now it evolved to a market totally differs from the past: much larger & permanent (not ready to run from police raids) the products now are mainly foods.
Tôn Thất Đạm was not unique. There was another: Nguyễn Thông, District 3. May be more, I was a kid then.

Hey Max. Congrats on all your success and I am happy to see you try new format. Even though it’s much more cinematic unfortunately the speed and flow has slowed and I find myself skipping ahead. Your old format is also way more entertaining to watch. I say you are a faster and better story teller or maybe you need to edit it so your audience isn’t waiting for the story telling. Maybe a second channel for this format?
