I was looking at both, not sure what to get. How did the Legion 7i compare to the Pro 7 in terms of fan noise? Also, was the thickness / weight difference really noticeable between the two?
@@BRent-kh5xi The weight and thickness is noticeable. I wouldn’t go as far as to say the thickness is doubled, but one should expect it to be heavier. Since pro 5i and 7i both max out at 4070 and same cpu what really is the better buy. is it better to put some extra money and go for the higher 7i or go with the 5i pro.
@@fracturedprawnI've seen the same. Other reviews have said the i9 isn't worth it because of the throttling, similar if not better performance with the i7, and more power efficient.
Lenovo Yoga Pro 9i 16 G9 could also be included because it is also a 16" laptop with a RTX 4070. Yoga Pro is aimed at content creators, so it's thinner and has low-powered Meteor Lake CPUs, but CPU should not matter that much in games with a 4070. I guess Yoga Pro has a better battery life and speakers than Legions.
IIRC the Yoga Pro 9i has its 4070 limited to 90-100W. For gaming purposes the lower TDP would would significantly lower gaming performance vs. other gaming PCs that run the 4070 at 140W.
@@Andorski If i remember right, 4060 and 4070 hit its peak diminishing returns Wattage about 115W, but 100W is the best for efficiency ( 115W compared to 100W different is so small- at about 5% ) i would say that the exceed 30W can be pushed to CPU - part that seemed more important for content creator
True, but I do not have it yet, and I wanted to focus on the legions. And yeah, the higher power limits will only matter in highly GPU bound games, but not a lot to make for a completely different gaming experience. As the others stated, going beyond 100-110W on a 4060 or 4070 ist not making a huge difference in real world fps numbers!
Seems the CPU is struggling a bit on the 7i, 95 degrees in performance mode while gaming is quite bad (most likely throttleing). I guess Lenovo should've renamed their cooling system to "hot front", not "cold front" or whatever it is xD Maybe the i7 14700HX variant of 7i is better suited for its slim chasis. Also the display is a weird choice, 3.2K for a 4070@115W is a stretch. Good for content creators I guess, bad for gamers since gaming at a non-native resolution looks weird. Guess I'll pray that my Asus lasts another year or so, while waiting for a better performing / cooled slim-ish design laptop. Thanks for the review , really good !
95c means your paste is dead. I had a sim problem but I have warranty for 6 years so im good. mind you, it is a laptop. playing things like first descendent and cod at 1080p and 165Hz while the game is on ultra while running backgrounds like the web and Spotify will over heat the pc. try playing it on performance mode and make the fan run at the highest in the lenovo vantage app, leaving it on normal will make it over heat. so make the game run performance mode while every thing is closed, also restart your laptop and boot up the game only as in task manager, after a normal day of use there are many tasks running, that way its refreshed, on max fan speed, and performance mode. and also get it re-pasted. I did all that and now I can run at 1080p 165hz on ultra performance with out going over 87c
I got the 7i because of your detailed review, Alex. It's a gem. It doesn't overheat and is fast and spacious, and Lenovo seems to make good quality devices.
@@NotebookcheckReviews welp, a little update, its already entered my country, but the pricing is basically the same ($100+ difference) between Legion 7 and Asus G16 with the same spec (4070 and 32gb of RAM), any suggestion? I am not comparing 165 Hz(7i) and 240 Hz(pro 5).. please tell me which will perform better in fps as well as in performance...the legion 5 pro or legion slim 7i please reply me 🙏🏻
I gotchu bro, I Myself am using Legion 7i 165Hz 3.2k ...... Trust me 3.2 k is way better than you think it is. First of all AAA Games cant go over 120 Fps. Second of all Video Viewing in 3.2k is almost similar to 4k. Both Perform the same but Oh my God 7i looks marvelous and have dcip-3 color gammit is way accurate than SRGB. Dont give it a second thought and Go with 7i as Display is better,Color is more accurate and most of all it looks good. And trust me u wont notice much difference between 165 hz and 240 hz, but u will notice remarkable difference between 2k and 3.2k. Hope it helps
me personally i would much rather prefer the legion, the display on the m18 is just 300 nits and 165hz which is an absolute deal breaker for me and the Alienware command center software is also said to have many problems. On the other hand the Lenovo vantage software is just so easy to use and feature rich. I just bought a legion myself too, so i can tell you that its just great. But if you think that you just want a 18 inch laptop you should go for the predator helios 18 or the scar 18. The helios 18 with the mini led screen often goes on sale for about 2700 usd, so it would be cheaper than the alienware. But between the helios and legion i would still pick the legion.
I wish buying a laptop would be as easy as Harry Potter buys his magic wand. The laptop chooses the the owner who fits best. Since two months I cant decide which laptop, I should buy. I'm desperate
Even if sometimes manufacturers say 1tb per slot but in premium laptop 2tb ones also work, same with 32gb ram some can take more even if manufacturers say 32max.( Most time they say max what they sell ). But in case of ssd most laptop will only go to 1tb per slot
No one, because Lenovo does not provide free fan control. The Pro 7 has the best cooling, but fan control is highly unoptimized. Example Furmark: In Performance (8:55) it runs with full power of 175 watts and nearly reaches the temperature limit with 84°C. Great! In Balanced it runs with only 105 watts (70 watts less than full performance!) although the gpu is 20°C below thermal limit! The GPU could run much faster or the fans could be much quieter. But at least the latter one cannot be achieved through Lenovo's custom mode, because fan speed cannot be lowered, but only raised which is totally stupid. 20°C below thermal limit and we are only allowed to raise fan speed. FAIL! We need free fan control to tweak temperatures and fan speed INDEPENDENTLY. I would like to set the temperature limit to 80°C (4°C less than on Performance mode in Furmark) and set the max fan speed a bit lower than on Balanced mode and let thermal throttling automatically detect the maximum power within these two constraints.
@@taequilty It was already available for €2,500 more than once. I don't consider that a good price. I'm waiting for it to appear for less than 2400€ and then I'll post it 👌

i think a chart that condenses and summarises the whole data would have been very useful as it is very hard to keep track of all the information you are sharing, gets overwhelming.
@@NotebookcheckReviews it would be nice to have a chart for non- performance related factors like keyboard, build quality, trackpad, portability, display. it would be somewhat like a teirlist . eg : The columns would be laptop models, rows the above mentioned features. The rankings would be *Excellent, Good, Average, Acceptable and Poor.* OR your channel's usual graphs. let's say first feature is build quality then legion 9 would be excellent( since it has a fully metal build, hinges are not glued or plastic), legion 7 and 7 pro good( almost full metal build ), legion 5 pro average( only lid is metal), Legion 5 acceptable ( metal lid but not as sturdy as pro, flex). This maybe extra work but regardless thanks for reading.
I got the legion 7i with 4070 32 gigs of ram and it's a beast since it can run any game I want to. The only thing is it gets a little warm but its manageable in use and also, I use an external keyboard so it's not an issue while playing games. The legion pro 7 is to expensive for me so the 7i is perfect!
The legion pro 5 is priced higher than the legion pro 7 which is more powerful in terms of performance, and I also prefer the legion 7i which has a better 3.2k screen panel than the legion pro 5 which costs $1000 more than the legion 7i
Okay. Stop. The Panels are pretty clearly explained on lenovos configuration site. All of them are made by BOE and are either the same screen or at least from the same family BOE NE160QDM series (except the 3.2K version). There are 3 versions of this panel available in 2560x1600 100% sRGB 350cd/m² 100% sRGB 500cd/m² 100% DCI-P3 500cd/m² Aswell as the 3.2K version which has 100% DCI-P3 430cd/m². In theory you can take any of these and put it in the other ones. You could even get the lowest apec version and get yourself a NE160QDM-NM4 which is a comaptible 1250cd/m² micro-led panel, used in the asus rog duo 16.

I’m still rocking my Legion 7i I bought in April 2021 with an: Intel i7-10875H GeForce 2070 Super Max Q 32 GB RAM 1 TB + 2 TB SSD The laptop still runs just as good as it did on day 1 and this is with the model that had supposed hinge issues. Although I baby my tech gear I’ve thrown everything at this computer, from gaming to intensive editing sessions and have been really surprised at how well it’s held up. On the fence about upgrading because I know it’s still got at least another year or two in it but there’s always the tech FOMO lol
@@NotebookcheckReviews I’d probably pull the trigger on a 9i. If I’m going to upgrade might as well go all out, since I expect to hold on to the system for at least 3-5 years. Love your content! One of the best tech channels on TH-cam
TLDR: Lenovo Legion Pro 5: Budget-friendly option with i9-4900HX and RTX 4070 (140W max TGP). Good for mid-range gaming but lacks premium features like an advanced display or all-metal chassis. Lenovo Legion 7i: Sleek, professional design with a slim aluminum build and Thunderbolt 4. Great for office or professional use. Lacks an Ethernet port but offers excellent Wi-Fi. Performance is solid, but not as gaming-focused as others. Lenovo Legion Pro 7: High-end choice with RTX 4080 (175W max TGP), DCI-P3 display (240Hz), and all-metal build. Best for gaming, content creation, and workstation tasks. Offers great I/O and expandability. Conclusion: Best overall is the Legion Pro 7 for its top performance, display, and build quality. Best for budget is the Legion Pro 5, offering strong performance at a lower price point.
I wonder why all the smaller laptops this year caps out at a RTX 4070. The 4080 and 4090 gives so much more performance. Not a good year to buy smaller laptops.
It is probably because that is what most people buy. Take the 2023 ROG G14, for example. Not many people are willing to shell out that much cash for a 4080/4090 in such a form factor, so they slimmed it down and maxed out with a 4070 in the 2024 version.
@@NotebookcheckReviews if that were the case you would think at least one brand would have a 4080/4090 model, but since every brand stop making it this year I wonder if it was an Nvidia decision that stopped them from selling it. And $2799 for a RTX 4090 G14 isn’t too crazy and way cheaper than a Razer and other brands with 4090.
Thanks for another great informative video. I've been waiting a while as I picked up the Pro 7 4080 back in February when it was released. What a great machine it is for the cash! I was originally looking at the 7, but after playing around with it at a buddy's house I decided it wasn't for me. I think the web cam on the 7 kind of sounds echoish to me whereas I get compliments from my professors about how good the video is during meetings. They don't believe me when I tell them it's just a 1080 lol Also, not enough ports for sure. The speakers too are not cutting it for me. The Pro 7 speakers sound much better. I only wish the trackpad was glass and they gave it a fingerprint scanner or ir cam for easy sign in. Either way they're all great machines. I just wanted better performance for gaming and rendering and the 4070 just doesn't cut in my opinion. So, like I said they are all awesome units but my pick, obviously since I own it is the pro7. Thanks for the great video. Keep em coming.!

As far as I know the Legion Pro 7 is only available with either an RTX 4080 or 4090. For GPU options below you would have to opt for a Legion 7, Legion 5 or Legion Pro 5.
I can only say... Legion 7A Pro, 48GB DDR5 RAM, R9 8955HX 16C/32T, RX 790M + RTX 5090, 2TB M.2 SSD, 3.2K 120hz, 100% aluminium.... one day you ppl see it.. my laptop!
The fan noise of pro 5i is not much more than my ryzen 3 non gaming laptop sound on full load. 😂 . I say the fan noise is ok regarding it's a gaming laptop where I am used to louder non gaming laptop.

@@Andorski If i remember right, 4060 and 4070 hit its peak diminishing returns Wattage about 115W, but 100W is the best for efficiency ( 115W compared to 100W different is so small- at about 5% )
i would say that the exceed 30W can be pushed to CPU - part that seemed more important for content creator
Do they have similar thermal designs internally, or are there significant differences?
I did all that and now I can run at 1080p 165hz on ultra performance with out going over 87c
mind you some games take so much power. and would recommend a desktop that has a 10x better cooling system
I got the 7i because of your detailed review, Alex. It's a gem. It doesn't overheat and is fast and spacious, and Lenovo seems to make good quality devices.

Honestly wondering why the XMG Neo 16 was not included in this compare and contrast bit of video.
Because we wanted to focus on the Legions and did not had the XMG at this point.
Hey community..
Which would you recommend for me, between the alienware m18r2 or Legion Pro 7i?
Your responses will be appreciated🙏🏿
me personally i would much rather prefer the legion, the display on the m18 is just 300 nits and 165hz which is an absolute deal breaker for me and the Alienware command center software is also said to have many problems. But between the helios and legion i would still pick the legion.
lenovo legion 7i i9-14900 hx screen 3.2k and the rtx 4060 8gb, will work find? or its better a lower screen 2560x1600

pro 7i
My employer got me the 7i for work and the Pro7i I bought for my own ;)
EXCELLENT REVIEW - TY
U should have talked about each laptop max ram and ssd support, no ones tells this properly
Even if sometimes manufacturers say 1tb per slot but in premium laptop 2tb ones also work, same with 32gb ram some can take more even if manufacturers say 32max.( Most time they say max what they sell ). But in case of ssd most laptop will only go to 1tb per slot
Should I buy legion pro 5i or legion 7i(non pro) and both have i9 with 4070 and 32gb ram and same price
i7 over i9. From what I've seen you'll get similar performance because of the heat/throttling issues with the i9, and better battery performance.
And is cheaper
I dunno how they are doing it. But my pro 5 2023 has more noise at same power
What config are you rocking?
@@NotebookcheckReviews4060 7745hx
You forget to include the panels response times
Is it just me or is the 5 pro much more silent in performance mode?😮 I had the 5 pro 2023 and retoured it because it was loud + coilwhine 😅
It is surprisingly silent, just keep in mind it's the 4060 + i7 SKU.

I'm wanting to buy some silicone keyboard protectors but can't easily compare a Lenovo Pro 5 Gen 8 to the ones I can order online which either mention 2023 models or only Legion 7 or Pro 7.
no, every new laptop has a dif keyboard. only the same models and same everything would have the same keyboard
Does the 7 have an extra hour of battery life than the 7 pro bc of the graphics card and 240hz screen?
.... dud, never play a game with out it being charged
the card and the 240hz screen wont matter, if its not plugged in, your doing work stuff and web browser stuff.the GPU WONT RUN YOUR WEB. and you dont need 240hz for the web. its a gaming laptop, your battery will die fast, its not those crappy cromebooks
Why you write that the Legion 7 RTX 4070 has 115W TGP while the Lenovo website states 130W (115+15)? If you are not counting the Dynamic Boost, then you should show the Pro 5i RTX 4070 have 115W too (115+25). Can you please explain?
I thought the 7i has a total boost of 140w. But yes I have the same written question. Why weren't the bench marks run in the highest performance mode?
Which one has the best speakers
I don't know all of them have the same speakers.. but I got the Legion 7 pro a week ago and the sound great.. it has Harman speakers, and Nahimic audio.. I played the same music side by side on my 2 year old Alienware and the Legion 7 pro blew it away.. it is So much better in every way..
pro 7i has the largest speakers of them, so naturally it's the best.
I don't understand how reviewers are showing great battery life but...real life says different?
Because it really depends how you use your notebook when on battery, even the smallest things can tremendously alter overall battery consumption.

i think a chart that condenses and summarises the whole data would have been very useful as it is very hard to keep track of all the information you are sharing, gets overwhelming.
Which information would you want in a chart in addition to the graphs we already have?
As a pre-uni student, 5i and pro 5i which one is more recomended?🙂
both are very good, i would choose the pro version, but both are very good
The legion pro 5 is priced higher than the legion pro 7 which is more powerful in terms of performance, and I also prefer the legion 7i which has a better 3.2k screen panel than the legion pro 5 which costs $1000 more than the legion 7i
Wow. How so.... im trying to decide within a legion slim 5 ryzen7+4070 at 1650€ and the legion pro 7i i9+4080 which at 2850€, 1200 more expensive.
Awesome job, Alex!! It's always great to see you give product reviews. Keep up the wonderful work.
Okay. Stop.
The Panels are pretty clearly explained on lenovos configuration site.
All of them are made by BOE and are either the same screen or at least from the same family BOE NE160QDM series (except the 3.2K version).
There are 3 versions of this panel available in 2560x1600
100% sRGB 350cd/m²
100% sRGB 500cd/m²
100% DCI-P3 500cd/m²
Aswell as the 3.2K version which has 100% DCI-P3 430cd/m².
In theory you can take any of these and put it in the other ones. You could even get the lowest apec version and get yourself a NE160QDM-NM4 which is a comaptible 1250cd/m² micro-led panel, used in the asus rog duo 16.

I’m still rocking my Legion 7i I bought in April 2021 with an:
Intel i7-10875H
GeForce 2070 Super Max Q
32 GB RAM
1 TB + 2 TB SSD
The laptop still runs just as good as it did on day 1 and this is with the model that had supposed hinge issues. On the fence about upgrading because I know it’s still got at least another year or two in it but there’s always the tech FOMO lol
Sounds like a nice machine still. My first Legion 7 experience was with the 2022 model.
What would you upgrade to if you had the chance right now?

Not really, no
TLDR:
Lenovo Legion Pro 5: Budget-friendly option with i9-4900HX and RTX 4070 (140W max TGP).
They are such good laptops but I wish they had OLED. Once you go OLED it's incredibly hard to go back
Thanks for another great informative video.
