so great security, once you put in a sim card, the phone number will be associated with your account. when you lose access to the phone number, you are locked out even though you have set the recovery key. really genius
lmao i was thinking the same scenario the only solution to this is a trusted device or just calling your provider to give you another sim with the same number.

Hey question , have a MacBook Pro 2020. I’m locked out of the computer, I’ve forgot the password , and when I try to reset password , it ask for a recovery key. I don’t have or remember making a recovery key for it. Also my iPhone Apple ID is linked to the computer. Is there any way around this ? I have half of my life pictures on that computer

These are great questions thank you for asking. They’re also a little complex so if my initial answer doesn’t clear everything up please ask again for clarity. The Apple recovery key is distinct and separate from the Hardware security keys. The security keys are string 2fa/mfa authentication method that is used when authenticating a new device or you need to authenticate to your iCloud account online, the Apple recovery key is used to recover an account if you have lost your trusted number or you’re strong second factor authentication. if you lose access to devices and have lost access to your Apple ID account, you will not be able to recover the account or authenticate to a device without the Apple recovery key. The Apple recovery key is also required for advanced data protection, I.E. encrypting your cloud data so that no one else can read the information.

The reason why I asked the question was because I’ve seen a post online, about someone testing 2 factor authentication with only using security keys and a trusted phone number, and they said that if you went into forgot password while on the login page, (without using/ having a trusted device) it will first ask you for a security key, and only once you connected a security key will it then ask for your trusted phone number, and they said that if you didn’t have your security keys you couldn’t really reset your password, and so you can’t recover your account, so I thought it was similar to a recovery key in that way. When it sends the code, look lower and you will see an option “didn’t receive code” More options will be presented. Choose no access. Then it will allow sending a code to your Apple ID email. You may have to wait 24 hrs or more before you receive confirmation on account recovery. The account cannot be recovered if you have added an Apple recovery key & lost access to that key. After you enter the key, read it backwards to make sure it is correct. Extremely easy to mix up a single character. What device are you using to recover the account, iPhone, iPad...? You need 3 things to recover the account, AppleID, trusted phone #, and the recovery key. Sounds like you have all 3. How did you lose access to the account?

To recover an Apple ID with the recovery key, you need three things: access to the trusted phone number, the Apple ID, and the recovery key. You need to contact your carrier and see if you can get that phone number transferred to a new device. This is why we recommend everybody get a VOIP number as a trusted number because you would always have access to it even if you lost your device.

That’s a great tutorial. But unfortunately, if someone somehow learns the passcode of my iOS device and steals the device, they can then change my AppleID password, log me out of all of my devices, turn off Recovery Key and even remove all of my trusted phone numbers from my account. Even if I protect my Account with a separate Screen Time passcode with Account Changes set to Don’t Allow, they can still change my Apple ID password by just using the Support app. Apple really needs to require more than just the iOS passcode to enable AppleID password changes. That is the weakest link in Apple security, which they know about, but refuse to fix.
100% agreement! They should allow the user more granular control over changing the security settings. Access to one pin code on one trusted device then game over!
@@CyberMedics Yes. I keep a copy of my recovery key with my living trust. But to recover one’s iCloud account with recovery key requires a trusted phone number, which won’t work if someone removes all of my trusted phone numbers from my account. The way that I have protected myself is by making the PIN for my iPhone an 8 character string of letters that don’t spell anything. And of course I don’t let people see me use it on those occasions that my iPhone won’t recognize my face.

Unfortunately, you cannot recover the iCloud account without the 28 digit recovery key. That is why we recommend everybody print out the key, and also save it in a secure, electronic location.
Do you have access to another Apple device authenticated to the same Apple ID? That’s the only other alternative. I know if you don’t have access to the phone number. The three things you need to recover the Apple ID if it has a recovery key is, the recovery key, the Apple ID and the trusted phone number.

You can use a Google voice number instead. This is what we recommend.

What does happen if you tap on "Can't use this number?"?
One of the subscriber wrote in and said that eventually it will allow you to continue with the recovery. Even though we haven’t tried it, I think it would be worth giving it a shot. Please let us know the results.
I forgot my phone passcode and Apple ID passcode but my Apple ID is a phone number that I have access to and Apple did send OTP to phone number after that they asked to enter phone passcode which I forgot then they said wait 24 hrs. I have access to phone number is it possible to get account back and if yes how?
Can’t you just repeat the same process to get the OTP code again to recover the account?

I forgot my appleid password and tried to login so many times that my account is locked now…When I clicked on reset password the system asked the recovery key but I don’t know that either because I lost my data.😢

@@CyberMedicsyes, unfortunately I set a recovery code…but when I logged out from my appleid it also logged me from the Notes app where I had the code 🥲 this has never happened to me before..:(
@@CyberMedics yes, there is.. But I lost my notes from my phone and there was the recovery code and the password too..:( so no chance to get back my original apple account? :/
@@adrienncseh3523 So sorry about that. It takes 3 things to recover an account with the recovery key: 1) recovery key, 2) trusted #, & 3) the apple id.....Unless you have another authenticated device.

I forgot my Apple ID password, I have a recovery key but when I click forgot password they want my number to send a verification code after I entered that code the recovery key came i entered 28 digits key but it said incorrect key but the key is correct, need your help how i get my id back.
After you enter the key, read it backwards to make sure it is correct. Extremely easy to mix up a single character. What device are you using to recover the account, iPhone, iPad...? You need 3 things to recover the account, AppleID, trusted phone #, and the recovery key. Sounds like you have all 3. How did you lose access to the account?

Hi, i got hacked by somebody and i unable to reset my password, he changed the trusted phone number and devices and email to another that i dont know, so i cannot reset my password through phone number, but i do copied the recovery key(i hope it still works), can i know what should i do next? thanks
To recover an Apple ID with the recovery key, you need three things: access to the trusted phone number, the Apple ID, and the recovery key. You need to contact your carrier and see if you can get that phone number transferred to a new device. This is why we recommend everybody get a VOIP number as a trusted number because you would always have access to it even if you lost your device.

You have to make a copy of the recovery key when you create it. If you did not make a copy of it, you will not recover it unfortunately.

My uncle has passed . He has his iphone locked and we had no idea how to unlock because none of his friends are informed for his death . We contact apple they guided us untill we notice a 28 - recovery key . Please help me some possible way . We have access to his sim card and we know his gmail and not the password

That’s a great tutorial. But unfortunately, if someone somehow learns the passcode of my iOS device and steals the device, they can then change my AppleID password, log me out of all of my devices, turn off Recovery Key and even remove all of my trusted phone numbers from my account. Even if I protect my Account with a separate Screen Time passcode with Account Changes set to Don’t Allow, they can still change my Apple ID password by just using the Support app. Apple really needs to require more than just the iOS passcode to enable AppleID password changes. That is the weakest link in Apple security, which they know about, but refuse to fix.
100% agreement! They should allow the user more granular control over changing the security settings. Access to one pin code on one trusted device then game over!

@@CyberMedics Yes. I keep a copy of my recovery key with my living trust. But to recover one’s iCloud account with recovery key requires a trusted phone number, which won’t work if someone removes all of my trusted phone numbers from my account. The way that I have protected myself is by making the PIN for my iPhone an 8 character string of letters that don’t spell anything. And of course I don’t let people see me use it on those occasions that my iPhone won’t recognize my face.

This happened to me. My ex got me good. I was stunned that someone could do this to me w out my knowledge. I always thought w Apple if my device fell in the wrong hands I’d be safe. No. Not at all! So sorry this happened to tou too. And my device fell in the wrong hands while I was on life support w heart, liver and kidney failure and I’m only in my 40s. I learned about needing to make my living will. These are amazing tips and now know where I’ll place my recovery key!

Unfortunately, you cannot recover the iCloud account without the 28 digit recovery key. That is why we recommend everybody print out the key, and also save it in a secure, electronic location.

Do you have access to another Apple device authenticated to the same Apple ID? That’s the only other alternative. I know if you don’t have access to the phone number. The three things you need to recover the Apple ID if it has a recovery key is, the recovery key, the Apple ID and the trusted phone number.

I’m logged into my apple id on my phone, but I don’t remember the password and when I click the “forgot password” option it makes me put in the recovery key. However, I don’t remember ever getting a recovery key from apple, any suggestions?
You can turn off the recovery key in settings. Not sure if it will request your password. If it does it will fall back to your trusted phone number. Let us know if you need help. Please keep us updated

Is your trusted number the same as the phone that is locked? How can you receive the code if the trusted phone number is locked?

@@CyberMedics no, Apple was no help. I had to travel 60 mile to an apple store where they wiped my phone. I would like to be able to now get my Ipad onto my new Apple ID that i had to create
You should be able to type in your new Apple ID on the iPad and authenticate to the iPad. Using the phone that’s already signed into the account. Please keep us updated.
@@CyberMedics I cant sign out of my old Apple ID because the hackers changed the email address to theirs and when i go to "forgot password" i just get a message that verification failed. I got their phone number when they tried to connect with face time and their email address they used when i got a paper statement from my Apple card they hacked. But it useless to me. Without the Apple recovery key you will not recover your account. This is why they warn you during the process.

You need access to a trusted device or the recovery key to access the account. You can turn off recovery key from another trusted device.
