No. A recovery contact helps you get back into an account if you lost the password. But if you know the password to your account, then you don't need the recovery contact to approve something.

Very good. I have not seen these instructions. Twice I have lost all my iCloud stuff. Apple was not able to help me so I had to create a new account and start over. I keep my login info: ID and Password for each place. I have over 350 in my secured database. All good advice. But my daughters original iPhone as been destroyed so therefore she cannot access her email A/C & she’s forgot her password. So cannot load her new iPhone 🙃
It varies depending on your situation. Remember, the easier it is for you to get into your account when you have forgotten your password, the easier it is for someone else to break into your account. Security first.

That's a tough one. You don't have any other Apple devices? Can you set your iPhone to AirPlay and mirror the screen to an Apple TV or AirPlay-compatible TV (or your Mac?) I'd call Apple Support and work with them and also come up with a long-term plan with them.
Unfortunately, my elderly dad forgot his password. He changed phone carriers and ISP so his old email and cell phone number is gone. Unfortunately, none of these work for him and he's pretty much stuck. I appreciate all the security stuff but it is a pain when dealing with elderly or non-tech savvy persons. I told him he may end up having to create a new Apple ID with new info and forget what he had before. I don't think he has too much stuff there though.
Gary! If only this video had been uploaded an hour earlier it would’ve made things much easier 😂 I was working on my MacBook just yesterday and suddenly it said that I needed to access my Apple ID, I did and immediately it said: ‘Apple ID locked’ and I panicked. Honestly I don’t even remember exactly what I had to do in order to change my password but it asked me to enter the password I use to unlock my Mac and then I received a Two-Factor Authentication… It was quite the ordeal. Any ideas of why and how it came to happen? And would you suggest changing the Apple ID password periodically? Thanks for your videos, man, love them.
I can't begin to guess what would have caused the issue. If you have a strong unique password for your Apple ID and are using two-factor, there is no need to periodically change your password unless you think someone else has gotten it.
this is not security, this is insanity, stupidity and erroneous and unethical and immoral and incompetency. in the name of security and privacy, the mess apple has created and the hassle the users have to go through is unimaginable.its the most user unfriendly experience .I got logged out of my Apple ID because apple couldn't recognise my CORRECT Apple ID password because acc to apple its wrong. this is the same id I used to purchase the device my m1 Mac mini and now it says its incorrect. HOW LAME!!!!! I never ever ever had any problems with my passwords because I always write'em down plus I checked my keyboard testing on a note pad .its fine plus I checked my wi-fi speed its fine. problem began when I started to download/update Mac OS latest version for my device available .so I selected to download around 2-3 gb and apple asked for my password I think it was my device id password.so I entered the password and it rejected a few times and then suddenly it accepted it and the download stated and I had a successful download. then I got App Store update notification and so I went ahead and chose update all and here too apple asked for my password but here it was apple id's password.so I entered my CORRECT password and here too apple rejected my password.so I thought maybe just like earlier may be there's some glitch and it will be accepted after a few try.so I kept entering and until the amount expired which I don't know for how many times you can enter, I got the msg that that I have entered incorrect password too many times something like that don't remember exactly and I need to reset or retrieve my password I don't remember exactly and as apple PROMPTED me to change my password which was CORRECT, which I used to purchase my Mac mini but incorrect according to apple , so I went for setting new password. I got an email confirming that my password reset was done SUCCESSFULLY and so I went to update I think I forgot the apps that were available for update and apple asked for my password and I entered the new password and VIOLA it rejected my new password. AMAZING👏👏👏👏 and I don't remember from here exactly how I ended up to ACCOUNT RECOVERY mode which is the NO NO in apple world I think in terms of getting locked and logged out from your own Apple ID. later I found that no one should ever enter that mode as no one not even apple knows when my account or password will get retrieved since its automated.according to apple this should be the LAST option when you can't sign in or reset Apple ID password.JUST WOW. I should give a big round of applause to apple for creating this TWISTED ERRONEOUS USER UNFRIENDLY MIND BOGGLING mathematical idea. one can understand if the user has forgot their password and then entering incorrect password as the system is designed to detect that faulty password to save and protect the user.thats providing security , but to reject correctly entered password and getting rejected is not security, its called erroneous and idiotic and incompetent system. in this case what will a user do. that's his/her only correct password. is there any other option to a correct password???I guess not. so can anyone say its a superior OS. I guess not. its erroneous, theres definitely a bug on the automated system and apple never admitted and never cared to resolve it as I can see many many users facing this issue, its not like everybody is forgetting their password. the whole design of password acceptation and rejection is a faulty one. I bought this device for my work and now instead im wasting my time and energy on how to reset my password and troubleshooting and researching.this is outrageous and ridiculous. firstly why would/should apple click on/switch on the always ask for password option without our prior permission from the factory. shouldn't that be the users choice. our data and privacy is our problem, not apples. I thieve this is violation of our user and privacy rights. there should be a pop up asking for our permission before apple wilfully doing whatever they want in the name of privacy and security. no right. secondly, if the user has already authenticated its credentials and already logged in , then why on earth do we need to enter passwords all the time proving our credential again. don't apple get it these has already authenicated and logged themselves in so why do we need to use passwords. isn't this wasting time and ridiculous??? they couldn't provide a 3 prong plug/cable with their device. how is the device safe. how will the device save itself and the user from short as there is no grounding. isn't that faulty. isn't that security concern??? people don't understand what apple is preaching here in the name of security and privacy. its absolutely faulty and erroneous.for me its more like cost cutting and wilful and forceful implementation of their ideas and practices.not correct. now I don't know how to rest to a new password as I've tried everything. just now I remembered why I chose to change the already correct password.so I think as I was trying to update the apps there was a pop up I remember very clearly now saying that your something is been used I don't remember user id ,password or someone trying to use with a location of my internet ip address showing a different location from where I live.i got scared and so I went ahead with apples suggestion of changing the password which later the new password got rejected and from there it kept rejecting the new password and I got prompted to go to recover retrieve option and I landed up here. later today while checking my internet speed and stability I found the IP address in fact was from that location where apple alerted me with the pop up. I feel so stupid to fall trap to apples stupid suggestion. now on hindsight I regret my decision changing my already working password. it never needed the change STUPID APPLE policies.now im wasting time trying to reset my password as apple can't reset it. also the double stage factor whatever bullshit recognition.its bullshit and serves no purpose. to reset they confirmed my contact number with OTP and email confirmation through OTP and I entered both the tops successfully and still apple can't verify the user correctly. so this myth too is busted as it serves no purpose. if you can't verify with the users contact no AND email, then what was the purpose of providing them with these information. now should I show my face and prove the with a Dna blood test or biometrics by scanning my iris and finger print. would that help me reset and revive my Apple ID. what a gimmicky and funny system is this. hillarious and frustrating. you call this security ,I call this stupidity. now what should I buy another apple device so that I can send verification code to my Mac mini.is that the whole plan of apple???? ridiculous people trying to preach apples security and privacy when they never tested themselves or faced issues with the security design.
I have been kicked off of account recovery to reset my password each time I got on since Jan 19. Talked to 6 supervisors. No one can help me. Only my iPhone is listed in devices.Everyone tells me different things. Supervisors have promised to call me back but never do. I have an expedited case set up but its getting me nowhere. What is the danger in having as many recovery contacts as possible even with people I don’t trust that much if the only thing they can do is give me a recovery code? Is there any danger to it?
You should only use people you trust. If someone you don't trust got a hold of one of your devices, then I suppose they could break in using the recovery method. Probably not a problem for most, but still.
Hi Gary, first of all great video! Your channel is really helpful:) Second- I just watched a video by Washington post from few weeks ago about Apple account getting hacked, they said that if hackers stole your iPhone and got pass your iPhone passcode they can change the recovery keys from the settings, then the recovery key they get makes the original you made obsolete and basically get you locked out of your account and there is nothing Apple can do to help you. What do you think of it? In that case wouldn’t it be safer to have a recovery contact instead of a key? They also mentioned something about a screen time passcode that can prevent Someone from changing setting on the iPhone
In the last few days I noticed that my recovery contact that was listed there once has started having multiple entries for the same person. I tried removing the duplicates and they still appear in the list. When I checked the other person's phone it says they are no longer a contact with my account, yet they still remain in the list on my phone. If I try to add them back they add as another entry in the list. I can't remove them from the list on my phone, iPad or Mac. I've restarted all my devices and the lists don't update at all. Anyone else experiencing this as well?
@@macmost Hi there, thanks for replying back. My contacts are all in a connected Exchange email account that I have. None of the one that I can't get rid of are in iCloud. It's so weird that after I remove them from the Recovery section, they don't disappear. @@DLMVegas I don't know the details of your situation, but usually trying to recover an iCloud account is very different than that from an other site. Other sites let you recover your password using email, but iCloud usually IS your email. I have my apple password and when I enter it, it is correct. However a pop up comes up saying that I need to verify it is me but it sends it to an old number, which I don't have access to. I cannot do anything with the phone, I cannot change the number on the device. I have tried account recovery and it says it will send instructions to my old number. I tried apple customer services and they were hopeless too. I even asked them if a passport was enough and they said there was nothing they could do.
Actually the time varies depending on some factors. And it is important that it does take a long time. Think about it. If it is easy for you to recover your account, then it is also easy for some WHO IS NOT YOU to gain access to your account. Security is top priority.

Very good. I have not seen these instructions. Twice I have lost all my iCloud stuff. Apple was not able to help me so I had to create a new account and start over. I keep my login info: ID and Password for each place. I have over 350 in my secured database. By the way, for the past couple of months, something is making it difficult to comment on stuff on youtube. A rounded cornered box with a balloon at the beginning and "Share Highlights appear in my comment space. It will not move and what I type is behind it so I cannot see what I type. Any suggestions?
What browser are you using? Do you have any browser extensions installed?
All good advice. But my daughters original iPhone as been destroyed so therefore she cannot access her email A/C & she’s forgot her password. So cannot load her new iPhone 🙃
She should contact her email provider and work to get that back first.

Making you wait 13 days is ridiculous
It varies depending on your situation. Remember, the easier it is for you to get into your account when you have forgotten your password, the easier it is for someone else to break into your account. Security first.
What if you dont have access to old number becasue your phone is broken and what about you get a new a iphone and try to set it up but cant
Only Apple can help you. You have to contact them and ask.

I have the email and password for my Apple iCloud account but it sends a 6 digit confirmation code to my old phone before letting me sign in on this new phone. The problem is that the old phone is smashed so badly I can’t see the 6 digit code- any ideas on what to do next?
That's a tough one. You don't have any other Apple devices? Can you set your iPhone to AirPlay and mirror the screen to an Apple TV or AirPlay-compatible TV (or your Mac?) I'd call Apple Support and work with them and also come up with a long-term plan with them.
why couldn't you use your gmail for recovery. That recovery key sounds pretty scary. I'm not having much luck yet for another person for recovery code
Going through the account recovery process with Apple would be the main way to handle this. It will just take time.
@@macmost That is what I feared. My dad is 86. This is going to be fun.
Thanks for another great and useful tutorial, Gary! You always deliver!
Gary! If only this video had been uploaded an hour earlier it would’ve made things much easier 😂
I was working on my MacBook just yesterday and suddenly it said that I needed to access my Apple ID, I did and immediately it said: ‘Apple ID locked’ and I panicked.

@@macmost ah I see now. I guess I will just use direct family or people who have something to lose if they betray me. Thanks for the info.
Hi Gary, first of all great video! Your channel is really helpful:)
Second- I just watched a video by Washington post from few weeks ago about Apple account getting hacked, they said that if hackers stole your iPhone and got pass your iPhone passcode they can change the recovery keys from the settings, then the recovery key they get makes the original you made obsolete and basically get you locked out of your account and there is nothing Apple can do to help you.
What do you think of it?
In that case wouldn’t it be safer to have a recovery contact instead of a key?
They also mentioned something about a screen time passcode that can prevent Someone from changing setting on the iPhone
I did a video on this: th-cam.com/video/0gAxjNHYMok/w-d-xo.html
Recovery contact or recovery key doesn't matter in this case. Unrelated.
Perhaps an issue in the Contacts app. Are you using other Contacts app services, like both iCloud and Google, or iCloud and "On My Mac."
@@macmost Hi there, thanks for replying back. My contacts are all in a connected Exchange email account that I have. None of the one that I can't get rid of are in iCloud. It's so weird that after I remove them from the Recovery section, they don't disappear. I have 3 of the same person, yet when I go on their phone it shows they are not a recovery contact of mine so I guess the system has removed them, but they still show up as 3 of the same person on my phone. Just want them to clear so I can add one of them back.

Got the new phone today and had the worst experience. Never forget logins and I had to reset my iTunes account 2x today. The new passwords never worked. I called apple and the support person was like oh yeah it does that if you are recovering the account. I was like I clearly and calmy stated what was going on and she just was like oh yeah that does happen. I had to put in my credit card info and now I have to wait 24 hours. Which then will trigger another wait time to reset it lol. So I'm currently using two phones. One with text/call and the other for apps. Not a great start with my iPhone 15
Ouch. I fared much better. Not even any hiccups with forgetting to set up two-factor code apps.
