Well this is what I want to do, I want to get back into my original Apple/ iCloud account. I just found my account recovery key but I don't know where or how to type it in? I have two Apple ID accounts and currently am using an old one to replace the original Apple ID which I lost the password to. At this point I am guessing I can do is collect all of my passwords, ID's and account recover-key that I can find and take it to our local Apple Store?
The 28 digit recovery key is used to set up the apple id on a device if for some reason you lost the password & 2fa authentication. It appears that if someone observes my passcode and then steals my iPhone that having a Recovery Key does me no good. The thief who observed my passcode and then physically grabbed my phone has my passcode so the thief can turn off my Recover Key using the stolen passcode. I was hoping that the Recovery Key would help is someone stole my phone (and had my passcode). Am I missing something?
Absolutely correct. If you don't secure access to trusted devices....any of those devices can be used to turn off the recovery key. I think Apple should improve the security of turning off the recovery key. What are your thoughts?
@@CyberMedics Agreed. Apple should fix this. It would be easy to require the Apple account login password for access to sensitive device changes and info. Based on what I have learned from you video and others, here is my plan of action to better protect myself. 1. Actions to prevent a thief from observing my passcode - Minimize the frequency of entering my passcode by using Face ID (or fingerprint) - Change my passcode to either “alphanumeric” or “custom numeric” of more than six characters to make it more difficult for thieves to observe my passcode - Enable “wipe iPhone after 10 passcode failures” to make it difficult to guess my passcode in case only part of my passcode was observed by the thief 2. Actions to mitigate the damage of a thief obtaining my passcode - Enable “find my iPhone” feature so that I can wipe my iPhone remotely if stolen/lost (and learn how to do this using my wife’s phone before I need to do it) - Do no use Apple keychain for my passwords. Use a third party password manager. (I use 1Password.) - Secure sensitive information on my iPhone using a secure app (like 1Password). Remove secure information form unsecured apps like Notes, Contacts, Photos, etc. - Minimize the cash transfer apps (Venmo, Zelle, Cash App, PayPal, etc.) on my iPhone - maybe do not use them or limit it to only one. Pick one that requires a login password beyond my iPhone passcode. - Minimize (or eliminate the bank and brokerage apps that I have on my iPhone. - Minimize the number of credit cards in Apple Pay - maybe limit to only one. - Backup my iPhone and laptop/desktop to something additional to iCloud - external hard drive, online backup, etc. Any suggestions/observations on my tactics are very welcome!
@@ThomasGifford Excellent Plan. Have provided some comments below. This seems like a good outline for a follow on video also. Well though out! 1. Actions to prevent a thief from observing my passcode (CM- All excellent) - Minimize the frequency of entering my passcode by using Face ID (or fingerprint) - Change my passcode to either “alphanumeric” or “custom numeric” of more than six characters to make it more difficult for thieves to observe my passcode - Enable “wipe iPhone after 10 passcode failures” to make it difficult to guess my passcode in case only part of my passcode was observed by the thief 2. Actions to mitigate the damage of a thief obtaining my passcode (CM- Comments below) - Enable “find my iPhone” feature so that I can wipe my iPhone remotely if stolen/lost (and learn how to do this using my wife’s phone before I need to do it) - Do no use Apple keychain for my passwords. Use a third party password manager. (I use 1Password.) CM: Always best not to link all information to one eco system...in this case Apple keychain. We have multiple videos on BitWarden. Before BW only used PBKDF2 SHA-256, but now allows Argon2 to derive your encryption key. This eliminates one of the advantages of 1Password. I think they are both 1st Rate. - Secure sensitive information on my iPhone using a secure app (like 1Password). Remove secure information form unsecured apps like Notes, Contacts, Photos, etc. CM: Basic question....if someone can open my phone...will any of the exposed information hurt me? 1st option: Remove, 2nd option encrypt, 3rd option encrypt the encryption. See our video on using Pzip with a key file and hardware security key th-cam.com/video/YZTfkfY9mUE/w-d-xo.html. If you follow this method, the hacker would 1) have to have access to the phone, 2) know the PW to the sensitive information & 3) have access to your hardware security key to open the file. - Minimize the cash transfer apps (Venmo, Zelle, Cash App, PayPal, etc.) on my iPhone - maybe do not use them or limit it to only one. CM: In general any cash app should not be tied to a primary bank account (Period!). Please see our video on Venmo (th-cam.com/video/mUitsYAtn1s/w-d-xo.html). Cash transfer app should only have access to money you can afford to lose. Pick one that requires a login password beyond my iPhone passcode. CM: This is primary consideration for any app that could make you vulnerable - Minimize (or eliminate the bank and brokerage apps that I have on my iPhone. CM: Although this is will be inconvenient, best security practice: do not have any financial accounts on the phone, other than those you are willing to lose the assets associated with the account. - Minimize the number of credit cards in Apple Pay - maybe limit to only one. CM: In the U.S. there is Federal protection against credit card fraud. It is ok to limit, but I think it is not critical. - Backup my iPhone and laptop/desktop to something additional to iCloud - external hard drive, online backup, etc. CM: Yes. When I was working IT full time we'd say: If it is critical back it up, really critical backup the backup, super critical.... Thanks for commenting & subscribing! @@CyberMedics Thanks for taking the time to so thoughtfully add your comments. Your idea of a secondary bank accout used for transfers with limited funds is one that I like and I plan to check into it. This video says how to generate Recovery Key, but it doesn't say how to recover an account using that Recovery Key.
Correct. We hope to do a video on that soon. Thanks dor commenting and subscribing
We have a new video coming out in a few weeks that provides a demo of the recovery, Thanks to feedback from viewers like you!
The more detailed video was published. Please consider viewing, thumbs up & commenting: th-cam.com/video/Keu7L1UySUk/w-d-xo.html Thank you!

Did you get a chance to view and comment on our part 2 of this video on how to use recovery key?th-cam.com/video/Keu7L1UySUk/w-d-xo.htmlsi=-4vFu5CAnxJRcDZY
1. Actions to prevent a thief from observing my passcode
- Minimize the frequency of entering my passcode by using Face ID (or fingerprint)
- Change my passcode to either “alphanumeric” or “custom numeric” of more than six characters to make it more difficult for thieves to observe my passcode
- Enable “wipe iPhone after 10 passcode failures” to make it difficult to guess my passcode in case only part of my passcode was observed by the thief
2. Actions to mitigate the damage of a thief obtaining my passcode
- Enable “find my iPhone” feature so that I can wipe my iPhone remotely if stolen/lost (and learn how to do this using my wife’s phone before I need to do it)
- Do no use Apple keychain for my passwords. Use a third party password manager. (I use 1Password.)
- Secure sensitive information on my iPhone using a secure app (like 1Password). Remove secure information form unsecured apps like Notes, Contacts, Photos, etc.

Excellent Plan. Have provided some comments below. This seems like a good outline for a follow on video also. Well though out!
1. Actions to prevent a thief from observing my passcode (CM- All excellent)
2. Actions to mitigate the damage of a thief obtaining my passcode (CM- Comments below)
- Enable “find my iPhone” feature so that I can wipe my iPhone remotely if stolen/lost (and learn how to do this using my wife’s phone before I need to do it)
- Do no use Apple keychain for my passwords. Use a third party password manager. (I use 1Password.)
CM: Always best not to link all information to one eco system...in this case Apple keychain.
CM: This is primary consideration for any app that could make you vulnerable
- Minimize (or eliminate the bank and brokerage apps that I have on my iPhone.

@@CyberMedics Thanks for taking the time to so thoughtfully add your comments.
Your idea of a secondary bank accout used for transfers with limited funds is one that I like and I plan to check into it. (I hope that I can do it with my current bank rather than having to get a second back as I am trying to simplify my finances.)
Your observation about the very strong credit card fraud protection is a good one. While I knew this, I did not connect the dots to arrive at the conclusion that I did not have to worry much about a credit card compromise should my iPhone be compromised.
