And on another note who ever filmed this thank you for not close ups on the band the best part about seeing tool is the experience the beautiful lights I give you props for showing the lights and no close ups so thank you who ever did that I have seen TOOL 3 times and each time the lights were amazing but I like I said I like that you are not closing in on the members just saying thank you best eulogy video I have ever seen so thanks man
Difficult to say whether this was a tribute or not. I was there that night, I didn't feel like it was, nothing was said before or after the song about Cornell, and none of the lyrics were changed. My friend thought it was a tribute and mentioned that after we left the Giant Center, but it's not really a tribute song and again, Maynard didn't change any lyrics or mention Cornell. Grateful I was there to hear it, though.
Retrocade Podcast I don't know if this is the place but I have never seen Tool live. I was lucky to see Soundgarden a week before Detroit. However, I am wondering if this is a poor quality video or if their sound person really makes the band so much louder than Maynard? And no btw this is click bait for sure.
During the Laturalus tour, I saw Tool in Dallas at the Reunion Arena just before the place got torn down and, to my surprise, they played Eulogy. Maynard was on top of his game as he belted out the "goodbye" in its full range. Man, it was awesome. Clearly, Maynard just can't do it anymore so it won't hurt my feelings if I don't hear it this upcoming tour.
I can't complain since I've seen Tool 5 times going back to 2002, APC in 2003, and Puscifer in 2011 but this is one song I haven't seen live that I really want to....
Yes. And rumor is he requested them to play this. He lives in PA. That's it. Case closed. No tribute. No other reason. I was at the music clinic the following year (where they played it again) and someone asked about this performance. But all Justin said was how Maynard never discussed who the song was about.
At Fort Rock, Maynard announced "You are about to witness rock royalty" as APC left the stage, referencing the upcoming Soundgarden. He obviously had a lot of respect for CC.
Nicholas Castoro I mean, they wrote this song after cobain offed himself, and I always thought there was an undertone of poking fun at the weaker aspects of the suicidal character.... and despite having respect for Cornell (which really everyone did) I can definitely see Maynard viewing cornells suicide as an awful waste worth singing this song over But alas, correlation doesn't equal causation. We may never know
This isint rap music. Keenan isint "dissing" CC. There is I'm sure no connection between them playing this song and his suicide. Probably more aimed at our current president.
well it easy should you have a weaker character, if you are strong person of will then...no it's not easy. But overall it's viewed as a weak affliction to combatting life's stress and boredom
It's the title Eulogy that has the significance here, not the lyrics...c'mon, they play Eulogy for the first time in 16 years the day before Cornell's funeral? In Hershey, PA? It's clearly in remembrance of him. Oh, and they haven't played it since.
"It's the title Eulogy that has the significance here, not the lyrics" So by that rational "Hey Man Nice Shot" by Filter would be an appropriate tribute to someone who made a "nice shot" in sports or something, even though the song's about someone committing suicide. No, that's insane. You know the saying, "You can't judge a book by it's cover"? It's true and, in my opinion, applies well to songs and their titles.
Generalize much? U take one sentence and use it as a blanket statement. Read the ENTIRE paragraph - there's other variables that make this song, specifically the title, at this time and place, relevant to Cornell.
Def was a tribute to Chris... They never played it again after... They were great friends... Maybe Chris told him he likes this song. They performed together everynight when audioslave and apc were on lollapalooza in 03 ....They did a song just the 2 of them.
1. my very favorite tool song 2. love CHRIS but not too sure it was a tribute to him in any way because 3. look into the meaning of the song but awesome i would be bummed if i went and they didnt do eulogy
good video. I just saw their Wa state show and it was next to impossible to record anything of quality. it seemed there was security swatting down recording devices at every turn. BTW, as was already been stated, there's no Fn way this was a 'tribute' to CC, unless they hate him, which I don't believe to be true. CC did not have a lot of nothing to say. 😔
I've had time to process all this and I'm now almost 100% sure it wasn't a "tribute" to anyone. My near certainty comes from the fact that I finally realized what the song was about. I call myself a big Tool fan but a month ago I was ignorant of it's meaning. You have to "listen, think, repeat" a few times, and reading the lyrics helps, but the meaning is there. Give that a try then explain how it's a tribute. I dare you. Coincidences do happen people. It's a strange thing we humans have, making connections that aren't there to try and make sense of things. Maynard's been preaching it this whole tour: Knowledge is not your enemy, ignorance is. I acknowledge the question of, "why did they play it?", still remains. There's other comments here suggesting it was played "in honor" of another individual who had a big influence in Hershey/PA over the past year. I currently subscribe to that theory.
the comment section is why i love tool. no one knows exactly why they played this song. you also have to remember that tool wrote this song almost 20+ years ago.
Well, I was at this show and I think they played it beacause Adam's guitar solo during Jambi had no sound for a while. A song they haven't played in a while is like a special treat for the fans! Sorry, I didn't make up some bullshit story that i can't prove!
Might be a fair assumption due to timing but I think the song's a tribute to Bill Hicks, Tool just played it because they have to change their set list up once in a while? He didn't mention Chris so speculate away.
no use to cry about if its played cuz of cornell or trump...... i know they got older...i know studio versions are edited like hell and blaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa... but i am ashamed.....the end !!!! i listened to the album quadzillion times... eulogy is such a burner..you cant wait to hear the ending scream and yet dont want this masterpiece to end... this performance makes me think : "keep the memory of the live concert 2006 and all the years hanging in front of my best friends sound system" this performance sucks......and i am a hardcore tool fan :(
His funeral was the next day and considering its Tool wouldnt surprise me if they played it just to honor him, but Mike Portnoy from Dream Theater was at the show, maybe he requested it? Who knows.
seriously, someone give it to me straight, is that maynard actually singing in the beginning, or is that some sort of duck calling device or whatever. i've been trying to figure this out for 21 years.
This isn't a tribute to Chris. First things first, this song is possibly about L. Ron Hubbard, which kind of makes sense, because Ænima released after around a decade of Hubbard's death, comedian Bill Hicks, which Tool dedicated Ænima to, or Jesus, which also makes sense, because Tool has made many songs about Christianity in general. Some of the lyrics like, "He had a lot to say. He had a lot of nothing to say." wouldn't be that nice of a tribute to Chris Cornell. Did Tool/MJK disliked Chris Cornell? No, because MJK sended condolences after CC's death, so they didn't even disliked him in general. DKaldas only said it was a tribute probably to get more views and such.
because why the hell would they play this fucking song literally the day before cornell's funeral, but after this show, NEVER put it back in the setlist since???? when i saw this video a month before i saw them in San Jose, i was PRAYING they would do this song at my show....but of course, they didnt. The lyrics might have nothing to do with it, but the title? seriously?? people are ruling that out still? WTF??
a friend of mine just told me why people think they played this in Hershey,Pa. Trump had a huge following their. i didnt think the CC tribute deal made any sense.. this fits way more with D Trump..and thats just awesome.. i think thats why this was played their and we havent seen it in the setlist since. well done!!!! and thanks for sharing this with us! nice shot!
Everyone hating trump should just be glad we didn't get hillary is all i KNOW for sure. I've got family who have both high ranking military jobs (2 brother in laws) and cia recently retired after Hillary's bullshit Benghazi gun running mess. But all these men who are exposed to important info are well informed of what she is and has done. She is a real piece of shit.
bobcat Trump had a huge following in the United States he won the election. Funny people seem to forget that just because the Liberals/Communist are so loud and obnoxious.
nobody forgot anything. im just stating why people think they played eulogy in Hershey Pa and nowhere else. i think its pretty fitting myself. i gave the guy a chance at first anyway. he won, exactly, but i think their proving to fit some of those lyrics quite well. oopsy.
He won the popular vote if you take out all the illegal immigrants. Also brain washed California has so many brain washed liberals, there not even Americans. With that said Trump won by a land slide. Trump 2020!
lyrically i dont see a problem ... Tool has historically been known to change the context of their material to fit whats going on around them... So long, wish you well... these words meant as sarcasm originally ... could very well be heartfelt during this circumstance .... all the while still holding true to the stupidity that is Suicide ... very unfortunate and sad stupidity
You're calling me "holier than thou" .. please read what you just wrote... calling something dumb or stupid doesnt mean the person is... the decision to do that IS... they aren't of sound mind so they make a bad decision... their circumstance may have led them there... but it is a chemical imbalance that made them make a dumb decision... Chillout dude.... you don't know me.. or what i've been through.. please think before you go on your tirades... you may be talking to someone who's sought out therapy himself and may know a lot about the situation.... Don't quote bible passages or w/e that was... and then call someone holier than thou ...
they did not play this at all during the 10,000 days cycle, please list the specific show if you think otherwise, the last time was during the Lateralus run in 2001
origanelly it was a tribute...sort of.. to Kurt Cobain....They just did it for CC for ..."fun"...cause it ain't really a tribute but more of a mock....very maynardish..
I have no pity for anyone who takes their own life, but I seriously doubt Tool would capitalize on something like that. Anyone who 'gives tribute' after a death, especially suicide, does so by bringing attention unto themselves.
This is a song about hatred. No one would ever dedicate this to Chris Cornell. This song is about a horrible judgmental liar, a loud accusational finger-pointing liar who does bad things in the name of religion. It's an awesome video and Tool fans appreciate it, but don't lie and say that MJK or Tool would dedicate a hate song to Chris.
Another tool comment section where people try to read way too much into why tool, or the almighty Maynard in most people's eyes, do anything. While they laugh all the way to the bank. Probably because the fans want to hear it and they have no new material to play for us.
Ryan Mckay I'd say the title of this video is reading too much into tool and the comment section is only dumbing it down. The video makes a crazy assumption as if this was meant to be a tribute with no evidence to back it up besides a possible coincidence, and most of the comments are just saying how ridiculous it is.
I was there. I was in shock when they played this but obviously so happy. Didn’t know this video existed thank you.
I know, right?
I think they played this song because it's a Tool song.
hertzer2000 Yep, they needed an excuse though to play it. Been so long.
Realy
you're an genius
great point, didn't think about that.
Yea ummm you’re wrong
And on another note who ever filmed this thank you for not close ups on the band the best part about seeing tool is the experience the beautiful lights I give you props for showing the lights and no close ups so thank you who ever did that I have seen TOOL 3 times and each time the lights were amazing but I like I said I like that you are not closing in on the members just saying thank you best eulogy video I have ever seen so thanks man

Retrocade Podcast No it's actually really easy to tell if you know anything about the meaning of the song
David Wesley Wot? The song is about false martyrs, which Cornell certainly wasn't.
Same here
Retrocade Podcast I’m so happy I was there as well so I can say I’ve seen them play eulogy.
This isn't fair to Tool or CC. Title of the video should be changed.
John M agree 100%
?
Maynard's voice sounds great. Saw him live with Puscifer last year and he was on form then too.
Shoulda just called the video "Tool plays Eulogy for no particular reason I can discern, and won't speculate."
Easily their best song. For me atleast
I highly doubt this was played in tribute to Chris Cornell. If so then they must have really hate the man.
Sentinel488 it was about bill hicks and im pretty sure they didnt hate him
Only it’s not about Bill Hicks either.
Sentinel488 it’s about L Ron Hubbard, and they absolutely despised him. Ænema as a record is a tribute to Bill Hicks, which they respected
During the Laturalus tour, I saw Tool in Dallas at the Reunion Arena just before the place got torn down and, to my surprise, they played Eulogy. Chris Martin this is a hateful song about a false hypocritical prophet. doubt it was a trib.
Once again, go back to the TITLE of the song - it's not about the lyrics. You have a cool name tho...
Chris Martin yeah based on your name alone your point must be seriously considered.
OMG HE CAN STILL SING IT LMAO
i dont know why that makes me so happy
I was at the show. There was an undertone to the evening, Maynard was in a good mood and often shit on Trump w/o saying his name. It was great!
Def was a tribute to Chris... They never played it again after... They were great friends... Maybe Chris told him he likes this song. They performed together everynight when audioslave and apc were on lollapalooza in 03 ....They did a song just the 2 of them.

Ben Johnson at least you get it
Omg its not about bill i cant stand it when people say that

tribute or not this song kicks ass
the comment section is why i love tool. no one knows exactly why they played this song.
you also have to remember that tool wrote this song almost 20+ years ago.
Well miss you, we're gonna miss you!!
It's cool seeing him hold the mic again
Does anyone here listen to TOOL? Wasn't it about Bill Hicks.... Who.. Maynard... liked? Not about someone "they" hated? i don't know..
Third Eye is about Bill Hicks.
This song is about religious martyrs. Not Bill Hicks. Read the lyrics, they're pretty unflattering
It's about L Ron Hubbard
The whole album was pretty much a tribute to Bill Hicks. Whoever says otherwise take any tool and hit yourself in the head.
pretty sure its about Jeebus
Aaron Estes ... it's a eulogy to Bill Hicks...
It's about scientology and L Ron Hubbard if I remember correctly
does nobody else see the images of Cornell projected onto the stage?..
corox I don't see them
LOVE IT!!!! MAN I LOVE TOOL!!!
A "Grunge" tribute Eddie Vedder did one with Pearl Jam- immortality (even he didnt though it was a tribute but that songs fits so well)
This is why next time they come
Around I need to travel like 5 hours away
RESPECT.
Well, I was at this show and I think they played it beacause Adam's guitar solo during Jambi had no sound for a while. A song they haven't played in a while is like a special treat for the fans! Sorry, I didn't make up some bullshit story that i can't prove!
Interesting to see the crowd energy in this compared to a show in 96' or so. Are people more afraid to express themselves now or what?
yes actually, bullying at concerts is ridiculous
Theres also no such thing as general admission at a Tool show you pay for your 2ft by 2ft seat
Might be a fair assumption due to timing but I think the song's a tribute to Bill Hicks, Tool just played it because they have to change their set list up once in a while? He didn't mention Chris so speculate away.
Why do you think Eulogy is a tribute to Bill Hicks?
Stephen H. Song is not about Hicks.
This was played for Chris Cornell, who had died like a week earlier..
no use to cry about if its played cuz of cornell or trump......
i know they got older...i know studio versions are edited like hell and blaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa...
but i am ashamed.....the end !!!!
i listened to the album quadzillion times...
eulogy is such a burner..you cant wait to hear the ending scream and yet dont want this masterpiece to end...
this performance makes me think : "keep the memory of the live concert 2006 and all the years hanging in front of my best friends sound system"
this performance sucks......and i am a hardcore tool fan :(
pitti platsch dude they’re in their fifties, calm down a bit.
So they never flat out said this is for Chris Cornell?
His funeral was the next day and considering its Tool wouldnt surprise me if they played it just to honor him, but Mike Portnoy from Dream Theater was at the show, maybe he requested it? Who knows.
d1sp0s1t10n, how do you know that MP was there? :)
My friend was at the show and talked to him and he posted a picture with Danny after the show.
yeah, after I wrote my comment I remembered I saw the photo Mike shared with Max and Danny. I didn't make the connection back at the time. Thanks :)
Sure thing :)
seriously, someone give it to me straight, is that maynard actually singing in the beginning, or is that some sort of duck calling device or whatever.
i've been trying to figure this out for 21 years.
William Alarie We will never truly know
It's some kind of instrument he holds up to the mic and plays with his mouth. No idea what it is but it's not just him😂
It’s a megaphone he’s speaking into.
Xdxd
Maynard isn't singing in the beginning that's justin doing it with his bass
Goddamn it this song is for Bill Hicks along with other s. How can you be a Tool fan and not know this!!
Chris Carter it’s not about Hicks.
I heard Trump was in town, so the song was fitting.
anything and I do mean anything that Manor does is how music is supposed to go period.
this song is about Elron Hubbard, not Chris Cornell.
This isn't a tribute to Chris.
First things first, this song is possibly about L.
WTF??
whyyyy couldnt they have done this in rochchester :(
ryan c wish they did this song in Chicago , we got the pot , either way all their songs are great
stfu you got Third Eye- i used to live 5 minutes away from that venue and it sold out before i could even get my fucking CREDIT CARD OUT. dick. :(
god damn
The crowd looks like they are at a funeral.
is this not the posters tribute to CC NOT T00i's?
This song is about L Ron Hubbnutzz and it's complete satire in typical Maynard fashion.
atleast he tried.
where was the eulogy??
Wowz...!!
Is the entire crowd deaf
oh shit Maynard cant scream anymore and l never got to see them live
Sad but true
Are you fucking kidding me! If you don't know who this is about, you are not a Tool fan.
This song is not the same without that Good Byeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee..
a friend of mine just told me why people think they played this in Hershey,Pa.
Funny people seem to forget that just because the Liberals/Communist are so loud and obnoxious.
nobody forgot anything. im just stating why people think they played eulogy in Hershey Pa and nowhere else. i think its pretty fitting myself. i gave the guy a chance at first anyway. he won, exactly, but i think their proving to fit some of those lyrics quite well. oopsy.
Brandon D totally why he lost the popular vote by over 3 million people...
He won the popular vote if you take out all the illegal immigrants. Also brain washed California has so many brain washed liberals, there not even Americans. With that said Trump won by a land slide. Trump 2020!
It's because tool isn't allowed to play at Hershey anymore.
Yes they are and were going to last year before Covid lockdown
This song was a eulogy for Jim Hicks who was a comedian and a friend of the band.
bill hicks
STEVE HELGET Bill. And at not about him.
Wow that scream was not there at the end
he has to preserve his voice so they can continue as a band for as long as they can until one of them dies.
not a tribute to CC...
I wouldn't say this song is a tribute. Jaxkass...
What the fuck with the star
This was before Covid, Maynard has no excuse for not doing that last scream 😒 haha
lyrically i dont see a problem ...
Don't quote bible passages or w/e that was... and then call someone holier than thou ...
if you use your head and think for yourself you may come to the correct conclusion on the title without having to post about it like a raving lunatic.
first time since 2001? They played Eulogy on the 10,000 Days your in 2006 and pretty sure after that.
Mirrek Balderson it had been 11 years, so during the 10,000 days tour, you're right. Not since after, though.
they did not play this at all during the 10,000 days cycle, please list the specific show if you think otherwise, the last time was during the Lateralus run in 2001
Nice light show but you guys had sucky seats for recording.
This song could imply to anyone who killed themselves with an exercise band and a good bottle of pills.
Yup, not even a word about Chris Cornell. Dude - You're embarrassing yourself
A tribute to click-baits.
origanelly it was a tribute...sort of.. to Kurt Cobain....They just did it for CC for ..."fun"...cause it ain't really a tribute but more of a mock....very maynardish..
that song is about Bill Hicks. Amy tool fan would know that.
Francisco Tijerina who's Amytoolfan? she a member of toolshed? cornucopia?
I can't hear a fucking word of this video. Wtf?? Who recorded this? It sucks.
5:00
what about it?
DKaldas not nice man
And the Lamest crowd award goes too....
I think he tried to say that it is HIS tribute. That´s why he posted the video XD
No. Read the description to the video, ". . . in tribute to Chris Cornell."
rare???? I just saw them in Toronto 2 years ago. are you 12?
I have no pity for anyone who takes their own life, but I seriously doubt Tool would capitalize on something like that. Anyone who 'gives tribute' after a death, especially suicide, does so by bringing attention unto themselves.
This is a song about hatred. No one would ever dedicate this to Chris Cornell. This song is about a horrible judgmental liar, a loud accusational finger-pointing liar who does bad things in the name of religion. It's an awesome video and Tool fans appreciate it, but don't lie and say that MJK or Tool would dedicate a hate song to Chris.
First ever urge to thumb down a tool video.
DUDE. NO. JUST NO. This would be the worst tribute ever. Do you even listen to Tool?
That had nothing to to do with chris.
Conceptually, this song and "Jesus Christ Pose" share a lot of common ground. But this isn't a Chris Cornell tribute.
disrespectful at it's best
looks to be alot of empty seats at this gig. tool need a new album soon or they will be referred to as an old classic band
88eireman you're a dumbass
Dude arenas don't sell seats BEHIND the fucking stage
This is STUPID not a tribute to Chris !
Israel flag..?
*What a stupid comment lol*
A more accurate title of this video: "Teens pay hundreds to watch old men attempt Tool cover"
I dunno, I saw Tool last June and they were on point! They even played The Pot! So fun, they know how to put on a show!
