One of my favorite Tool songs of all time. Your take on the "He had a lot to say" section was interesting. I take it to mean that the person he's eviscerating believed he had a lot to say (and probably was very talkative), but none of it was important or of any value("He had a lot to say. He had a lot of nothing to say.").

Bill Hicks was a stand up comic that would open up for Tool until he died of cancer. What a beautiful sentiment to write and perform this song very often. Bill wasn't just a comedian but he spoke about social issues in a way that Dave Chappelle does today. Read the lyrics and it will all make sense and you will fall in a deeper love with the band

  • @garrettmarshall1288

Also, as a guitarist, I appreciate how you give Adam credit. Most people, especially guitarists, overlook Adam Jones, because not flashy. He’s a basically texture artist. That not only applies to how he plays guitar but in much of his regular art that he creates. It’s very rich. He’s very good at creating ambience and his rhythm is quite percussive. Usually Maynard, Danny, and even Justin get the accolades. It’s nice to see someone constantly praising my Adam!

"He’s basically a texture artist" is such a great way to describe him, at least to my non-guitarist ears. Tool is a big part of me, and this album was my first entrypoint to the band when I was a preteen. I worked my way backwards from here, and then forwards when Lateralus came out, and forward still. Texture is such a nice one for what the musicians of Tool do, and even for what Maynard does with his voice across all these albums. Between their naked ability and the distortions and sounds used in the mix!

@@Trepanation21 that’s the same way I found tool. I was 17 just starting senior year and was already into grunge and metal and really all rock music. Then a friend of mine who was like 2 yrs younger(who always got the newest music and much that I never heard of probably because I didn’t have cable/mtv) let me borrow this cool band called tool; a little cd called aenima. Instantly hooked; as if I found something I didn’t know I was looking for. I worked my way back to undertow and opiate; saw the. In concert a couple times and then a few years later Lateralus came out. I still consider Aenima their best ALBUM .Lateralus has a bunch of legendary singles and the whole album is good, but when it comes to a complete piece of art Aenima is disturbingly haunting; like a cold wet thing. Lie I said I might be biased since it was my first tool album and sort of set the tone for what I think of when I think of “tool.” Undertow was probably one of the best first albums ever made. It’s extremely mature for a new band. Lateralus of course is considered their magnum opus by most and their subsequent albums are all freaking great. But Aenima is what an album sounds like when a band is still hungry. Before they blow up completely and start reaping the benefits of their success. There’s something really honest about it. Even undertow wears its influences pretty openly but Aenima is sort of the stepping stone between mild success and the commercial success they attained by Lateralus. I could go on all day about it so I’ll shit up now!😅

My brother bought me the album for Christmas about my junior year of high school . . . . in any case, I loved it on whatever level I could understand it at the time. "ranting twirling his (the grudge, vampire) finger
at everything but his (the patient, warrior) heart"

the talking monkeys need to stfu (hush) & listen
      "remember i'll always love you,

For me it's a sarcastic look at leaders who pretend to sacrifice themselves for the people beneath them or their followers but have no interest in doing so "you claimed you would die for me", the people can't live without someone to follow so as each pretender is replaced they find the next "fool martyr" to hang on the cross, the symbol of making a sacrifice, the sarcasm comes in because they're wasting their time doing this instead of solving their own problems "you must be crucified for our sins and our lies".
It's not necessarily about religious groups or cults though the song makes those references, the message could be applied to any self serving leadership figure.

notes (like the musical pitches) on lyrics "you claimed all this time that you would die for me" show up at beginning of the track, as everything builds upon itself, but before the guitar distortion enters. that's all megaphone. I was too used to the punk rock element of opiate and the heaviness of undertow. Aenima just sounded like noise to me. Then lateralus came out in 2001... I went to the show at the Phillips arena in Atlanta and realized just what a fool I'd been. This song is about Bill Hicks. A great lost stand-up comedian aka philosopher who passed. They also used Bill's routine as an intro to the last song on this record. Some say Andy Kaufman or L Ron Hubbard
Updated: I missed all of it!! It has been but my own interpretation is was about our beloved Melvin and I never took the time to look or seek further. Thanks genuinely, for helping me see this more clearly!! 🤘🖤

Just because Bill Hicks wss honoured in the cds liner notes and cover i dont believe eulogy is about him. Tool reveer Bill Hicks where the lyrics of Eulogy have clear contempt for the protagonist of the song.definitely fits Ron L Hubbard a lot more, especially considering Maynards contempt for mainstream religion. Just my 2 cents

@ev6808 As I've read upon it more, I believe I've been wrong all these years and I agree with you. When I was like 13-14 my older brother was big into TOOL, he printed out all of the lyric to all of their songs and basically quizzed me on them all the time.
Seen them live 3 times, hands down best concerts to go to! Just a whole different experience than other concerts.
And I’ve seen more bands live than only a few people I know.
I was 16 when I got a full time job and concerts were pretty much all I spent my money on.
    Seen:
    Tool X3
    Puscifer
    A Perfect Circle
    The Rolling Stones
    Eric Clapton
    Metallica
    Black Sabbath
    System of the down X3
    Alice In Chains X2
    Pearl Jam
    Beastie Boys
    Dave Matthews Band
    Rob Zombie X4
    Modest Mouse X2
    The Black Keys
    Greta Van Fleet
    Roger Water( The Wall)
    Steve Miller Band
    Godsmack
    BlackLabel Society
    Twista
Just a few off the top of my head.
People should go to as many live shows as possible!

With Pucifer, start with "The Remedy" or "Bullet Train to Iowa". These songs are a good gateways before moving into their more experimental work. They cover many genre's and lyrically can go from sarcastic/comedic to deep/confusing. Maynard sharing vocals with Carina Round is something you will really like. And Mat Mitchell is an amazing musician, composer, and producer.

Do some research on the band - find out a little bit about Layne Staley in particular. Then, with that information in hand, and understanding where he was along his path to an untimely demise…
React to the MTV Live version of “Nutshell” - there’s meaning to be found there if you’re into finding that type of thing….

By only listening to one Tool track at a time -- and making a big deal out of it, not only for us but for yourself as well, you are doing a really smart thing. I think it's part of the reason you love the band so much -- you don't miss the awesomeness of each track. For me, though, since the Aenima album, I have had that kind of anticipation for each new song that gave me a similar experience with each new album. Except Lateralis. It took me a few years honestly before I appreciated the awesomeness.

I first heard this one live at an Ozzfest just after Aenima came out. I got chills too. In fact, I would guess that everyone in the crowd got them. Maynard was in the blue full-body paint and did the most insane dance-moves. Drums were set up stage-left (at least that's how I recall it Blew my mind off. Made me an instant fan for life of the band. I felt they were the best band to play that day. Then again I missed a System Of A Down on the second stage, and everyone was saying they were awesome. But still... Tool left an imprint on me that's lasted all this time. I'll never forget that performance.

When this 1st came out, I saw an interview with Maynard. When asked about this song, he mentioned that he could see how ppl would think it's about LR Hubbard, but it's actually about Maynard's very close friend, Andy Kaufman, the guy who played Twiggy on Taxi and Laverne & Shirley, the short foreign mechanic. He was one of the funniest guys ever. Had his own variety show awhile. Man In the Moon is a great movie about his life, starring Jim Carrey. Andy fought with cancer most of his life. Great, great movie, Jim Carrey in serious role
    POLO REACTS
