      DowncastIce F to be honest, it was kinda scary the way he approached to me. He asked where if the train was going downtown. I said yea, then he pulled out a knife asking for my shit. I put up my hands telling him to take it out from my pocket, as soon as he looked which pocket had my phone, that's when I hit him with a strike in his temple. i got off the station & took a cab instead. If i didn't know what exactly to do, I'll probably would've done some stupid shit

    Only thing i have to say is that after training BJJ for a mere 7 months, I know that you always run when you have the change and you never "grapple" someone with a knife; the knife itself becomes the enemy and the focus of the defense.

      Most of the time you aren't aware a knife is involved until you're stabbed or after the confrontation. You can get stabbed 5-7 times in the first 5 seconds of the altercation. If you're in open space, you could run. If you're in close quarters, it's better to pin the knife.

      @@dadthelad I think pretty much the majority of knife self-defense videos are unrealistic. I've seen multiple real life street knife attack videos and many of them are kaotic, quick, and very violent. There are a few I've seen where two guys square off and both were a bit cautious in trying to maintain distance. In those types of situations I could possibly see using some of these self-defense moves. But majority of knife situations in public are going to be way too crazy for anyone to do any fancy disarms. Like you say best thing to do if you can is to swallow your pride and run like hell away. However, one thing I've noticed in almost all of these knife-defense videos is the lack of suggestion to fight back DIRTY. I'm talking about strikes to the eye, kicks to the groin, attempt to kick out a guy's knee, things like that. One slight scratch to the cornea is enough to send a fully grown man on his knees crying with pain.

    There were a bunch of hurt egos that disliked this video because they don't like to face the truth. The reality is that there's no martial art that offers solid, reliable knife defense. Not one. While a BJJ guy spends the next decade earning his black belt, it still won't be enough to counter a knife. I know it sucks to know that, but it's true. If you want to learn to defend against a weapon, it's best for you to train in weapons. Going bare-handed against a weapon is always the last resort.

    First and foremost, in any situation, the initial solution is to de-escalate, and/or escape,
    That being said, when I'm rolling, the thought of a knife being pulled at any point while on the ground scares me. No matter where the person is, they'll generally have 5 targets to choose from before you're even aware of the knife: heart, liver, lungs, throat, eyes.
    I'm a security guard, and this is a very real situation I could find myself in. It seems everyone here is carrying either a knife, machete, or bear spray hidden somewhere.

    My Gracie Jiu-jitsu instructor teaches us well in defense against a weapon. That is:
    1. If possible, run away and don't fight.
    2. They want your stuff not you (if it's a robbery) which means they would've stabbed you and then took your stuff off you. So just give them what they want because again they want stuff that can be replaced. Your life can't.
    3. It's not always applicable to comply and sometimes you have to fight.
    4. Only fight if it is absolutely life or death because you can fight and lose 100% or you can fight and lose 99%. 1% survivability is better than none.
    5. If you have to fight this is what we are taught. And then he goes through the training.
    In every move he showed us was first controlling the knife and then trying to submit the bad guy, and escape as soon as it's possible. Not only escape but get the heck out and away from the area.
    This is also why I don't rely on my Jiu-jitsu training alone. I also carry both firearms and knives. If it all possible, if you're armed and attacking me, I want to be armed defending me and mine.

    This BJJ guy isn't too acquainted with the knife, right? His part attacking was pretty stiff and all that, not that it would make it any less dangerous, on the contrary, being stiff and doing sudden big movements might result in a big wound that might give him time enough to go for the kill.

    Would like to see the drill performed with a red marker. This is better than doing nothing and knife vs bare hands is just bad. If you can't run and the attacker has a knife. Probably want to address what you have on you that can mitigate arm cuts, wrapping a jacket around your arm for example. Movement is good though, I like how the defender is creating an angle and always moving. Also, this is assuming that the attacker has already drawn for intimidation purposes. Heaven forbid the defender thinks its hand to hand, gets in close and hello surprise knife.

    Hypothetical say the guy has in mind that now days most people have a jiujitsu background and has a knife hidden on him and almost allows the bjj guy to get ahold of him only to pull the knife and cut or stab the bjj guy as his line of sight loses visual of the knife guy's other hand?

      tim gersh a sword is much longer. you are in a different distance than vs a knife. the sword guy wants you at the tip of his sword. a knife attacker wants to get really close. alone that is a huge difference. defense vs a sword is similar to a baseball bat defense (nick also made a video about sword defense, check it out :) )

    I'm not sure what your trying to get at, you did exactly what I or any good BJJ or MMA Grappling coach would teach to fight a knife. The advantage of using a weapon is not is lethal-Ness, but the range it gives you. The easy way to beat a weapon is to stay out of its range, either by staying outside its range or moving inside. If you can run, RUN! If you can't run, then keep the weapon from between you and your opponent and close the space between you so he/she doesn't have room to use it. Then take him/her to the ground, put them on thier back, and then once you have control, then you can take the knife away, or Run!(I voting running).
    Your Uke or training partner tried to go for your wrist, which they may teach in Aikido and other eastern self-defense styles, but you were using real Grappling or Wrestling techniques, ones that have been proven to work by many different people. Maybe you didnt know those moves are taught or you had bad instructors(I make no assumptions) but nothing you've done was unknown to BJJ. Only the submitting aspect of BJJ and Grappling is not recommended in street fighting or self-defense, what some call pain compliance, depending on were you go. Once you get the chance to run, RUN! Don't waste it!

    This is a fantastic video. However, the take away seems a tad misleading. Yes, trying to immediately submit someone with a knife is foolish. You have to control the knife, and dominate positionally before anything else can happen. But position before submission is the mantra of BJJ, and you were using basic grappling skills to close the distance, control the knife, and dominate positionally. Everything you did was BJJ!

    • @NickDrossos
      @NickDrossos  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree without going for the submission or take down. But that's where your BJJ does come in and work.

  • @AikidoEducation

    This is simply horrible. The attacker is not really trying to stab or slice. The hand and wrist would certainly get cut trying to grab the striking hand like that. Taking someone to the ground if there are multiple attackers is suicidal. When faced with a knife move away. Don't engage. Make them come for you. And God train something more effective than this for knife defense. Aikido is excellent for knife defense. Just about anything would be better than what is on this video.

  • @armannazerian3669
    @armannazerian3669 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Although I would never grapple with a knife attacker, I have so many problems with this video. this guy is not a fighter. he probably train in a gi and hasn't looked at self defense in his life. he clearly can't wrestle and looks like he doesn't want to fight. a self defense oriented Jiu Jitsu person would understand self defense and distance management enough NOT TO ENGAGE in grappling with a knife fighter. I would be throwing kicks. This BJJ dudes stance when you guys stand up is also clearly not one you would use for any self defense situation - much less this one.

    • @jamesellis33
      @jamesellis33 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You throw a kick you most likely get stabbed in the leg, get your head out of your ass. You would do this, you would do that, everyone has a plan, till they get punched in the mouth. Listen to Tyson. Nothing goes like it does in your stupid ass head.

    • @avibm948
      @avibm948 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jamesellis33 I faced knifes attackers in the army twice and a maigeri kick straight to the attacker was very affective. If your technic is good and you have space and your attacker is not a pro stabber it is effective to use kicks. Grabbing or blocking the knife is difficult if the attacker is fast.

    I'm honestly surprised that more Jiu Jitsu practitioners haven't been killed or seriously injured by knives. Hell there was even a BJJ black belt who was shot not too long ago. He tried to take him down in a road rage and couldn't control the gun. I loved how Jiu Jitdu got started but now it's simply creating over confident bullies who have as much of a false sense of security as TMA. That is why there is no one great style of martial arts, only great combinations of martial arts. That's why if I were younger and had the resources I'd open my own martial art gym with Jiu Jitsu that has rolls and uses striking during rolling. Have the proper equipment for protection. Incorporate KFM and Kesyi Fighting Method all together for striking. Along with simple dirty boxing.

    You're not cutting somebody with a small knife and flicking wrist cuts. Damaging someone with a knife requries a commitment to the strike which changes the dynamic entirely.
    And you say that grappling against a knife is ineffective but trapping the knife hand and controlling their arms and body that's all grappling.
    I'd like to see a test like this but against Judo. I wonder if the emphasis on throws and speed as opposed to a slower grinding fight would translate well to knife defense

    • @NickDrossos
      @NickDrossos  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Trapping is mobilizing the weapon hand with no intent of going to the ground for a submission or lock but striking fast, and grappling is the complete opposite.
