    Here are a few Krav Maga weapon disarming techniques, taught by 2nd degree black belt Marcus Kowal. Like anything else, you must practice these drills with a partner, just because when using fake weapons, as they could still poke eyes and cause injury.

    I attended Krav Maga sessions for around 4-6 months, and I quit because I believed that it didn't work in a street fight. This was due to a small knowledge of martial arts and also the fact that I had no other type of martial art of fighting technique under my belt. However, now after attending some mixed martial arts classes as well as practicing techniques that I have learnt on the Internet, I have realised that Krav Maga is indeed effective, just that the core techniques that you learn can not always be applied, but aspects from them instead. I would also advise that if you are starting Krav Maga then you should also start another martial art as well, such as boxing or Muay Thai, as these help with basic knowledge and also reaction time

      TheRosyCodex Why that? It is a fact that owning a gun in Europe is almost completely forbidden. It is also a fact that some right-wing parties want to change that. At least I mean that I am afraid of them, not people from other countries. Because they are much more dangerous

    idk why everyone says these defences are bad? there never is a perfect way to stop a weapon, but this guy hits all the main points.. adress the threat (it's a surprise situation so he addresses it by controlling weapon arm not knowing what weapon is), he kept line of fire off himself, kept control, and even emphasized that you should focus on beating then down rather than grabbing the weapon unless u absolutely need to. what is so wrong about these techniques?

    First of all I’ve been doing Krav Maga under the IKMF banner for close to 7 years and this is not a defence in the Krav Maga system although he has basics etc groin strikes line of attack but one thing he does he pulls the knife towards him completely incorrect as the attacker can use the momentum of it to stab you

  • @ethanhenderson8604
    @ethanhenderson8604 8 ปีที่แล้ว +45

    when reaching for the wrist that's holding the weapon, his defense CAN work.. but it's riskier than just performing a 360 defense then moving in. it's risky because in the heat of everything there's going to be way too much potential to miss the attackers wrist then you're basically throwing your body into the knife/gun.

    • @carlitoapplecool
      @carlitoapplecool 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    • @nicksmith5400
      @nicksmith5400 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      he's going in cause he doesn't know for sure if it's a knife. if it's a gun u just died by not going in. if it's a knife of course u push kick them and 360 but u don't know for sure. so yes u should go into the fight (don't aim for hand aim for the forearm, how the hell do u miss an arm?) but yeah I do see what u mean. for knife 360 is better because distance let's u react but in this case u don't know the weapon all u know is be aggressive and stop them, worry about what it is after u got control

    • @andretudor4112
      @andretudor4112 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Nick Smith He should have gone in with two hands when the attacker's hand(s) were behind his back or close to his body, when he has no power to cut through the defender. Next moment: a.you have no idea where or how the arm will move, so yes! you will miss a whole arm!, b. the knife starts to cut with multiple attacks, not just one. Another point is that even the 360 block defense will cut you.
      STILL, I agree with you, guys and with the general Krav Maga principles. Keep it simple and counter-attack!

      Well, using the U.S. for an example, last I heard approx. only 4% of the population actually trains in anything. The number is even lower for those martial arts that focus more on weapons (ie Arnis, Kali, Escrima etc). Chances are (albeit, sometimes statistics lie so to speak) you’re gonna get Joe Blow with minimal training at best (anyone with a weapon is still dangerous mind you). Just sayin.

    Hmm, I have to say that I was expecting a better defense than what was shown. Too much distance between the person with the weapon and the one defending, all the person would have to do is step back and move since he wasn't secured in any way besides his arm, and sweeping the gun across your body is a bad idea. Same with the knife, distance=death and sweeping it across the body is a bad idea again, plus you can't guarantee striking the hand will work.
    As Krav Maga instructor I'm shocked he didn't show "bursting" and capturing tighter to the body, or getting off line with footwork more. While doing this just move more and don't ignore your free hand and you'll see the difference.

    • @Lancers262
      @Lancers262 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I've been studying Krav for a long time and I do agree with your statement. I'm sure Shane had to make a lot of decisions on which Krav techniques to show first. After living in Baltimore and living in most of the most dangerous cities in the US, I can understand why he picked this defense first. Most attackers will keep the weapon hidden until they are close enough to you. Similar to what you see in prison system when they shank people with DIY weapons.

    • @TFSMikeRath
      @TFSMikeRath 8 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      +Lancers262 I agree with hiding the weapon and going from that point. That part is very smart, but I guess the Krav Maga techniques I've been taught and shown move with "bursting" and would keep the person close and wouldn't sweep the body. I do agree with hiding the weapon

      +Mike Reis Different styles and different situations. Either way, for someone who doesn't know anything about self defense, this video covers a lot of the basics ( the line of fire for instance )

    • @Lancers262
      @Lancers262 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      +Mike Reis I could be wrong with the statement I'm about to make......I have a feeling Marcus may have created own style of Krav after learning it, which is why you and I were surprised we did not see "bursting" because we learned it. For example, Israeli Krav Maga Association (IMKA) and International Krav Maga Federation (IKMF) are the two oldest Krav associations. Their style is very comprehensive system that once you hit black belt, you know both civilian and military applications. Then there is Krav Worldwide, Alliance, Fit to Fight, etc. They are young when compared to IKMA and IKMF and they removed the military applications such as defense against rifles. I can understand why these newer Krav associations removed defense against rifles because the odds of defending against a rifle is extremely low when compared to a hang gun.
      Sadly, overtime I can see Krav becoming like BJJ and Ninjutsu. When the Gracies developed BJJ, it was such an effective system that a low level blue belt can defense himself against highly skilled strikers. Now there are many BJJ schools that only teach the sport side of BJJ thus many of their blue and purple belts do not know how to use BJJ in the street because they do not know how to defense against strikes. Ninjutsu was a great martial art during the age of the samurai. Overtime ninjutsu masters stopped teaching it because there was no need to learn such a deadly martial art system. All of the remaining students never got the chance to learn everything and they ended up teaching the "watered down" version of ninjutsu.

    That is what i love about Krav. While i didn't learn this technique, It is very simple and reaching for the knife or gun in this situation is very natural. The only thing i would add is that you can do the knife disarm like the gun disarm. The reason you would have arm next to your body and torgue with your body like he did with the gun is because that would give you more power and the move is very fast. With the punching method you are putting your arm strength against their forearm strength. By doing it with the arm next to the body you are using your trunk muscles against their forearm.
    For those wanting to know more about what i am talking about. Look up Cavalier and Krav Maga. Plenty of great videos on it.

      You should take up Kali, Escrima or Arnis in the near future to bring your knife defense to a whole new level. All of them are filipino martial arts. Essentially they are the same but you'll learn in the beginning is different. I've been studying Krav for many years and then discovered Kali. I've did rubber knife sparring with a Kali expert and he destroyed all of my Krav defense. Because of that I've started learning Kali 4 months ago.

      +Adam Khan Going to the ground is normally a bad idea in a street fight as it takes away your ability to run away. No matter how good they are on their feet, they are probably not alone. That being said, a legsweep is your best idea as you can keep your base and then get away. The osoto gari in judo is a good example of this.

    • @GhostForces77
      @GhostForces77 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Adam Khan Cool you're being strategic, but I want to reveal something to you if you have never thought of it. Rule of thumb. Never go to the ground. It is safer to stay on your feet. You will not be aware of your environment if you are grappling wrestling someone. Your face will be stuffed with his body. If he has a buddy who says he won't jump in during the fight. Definitely don't go to the ground. I have seen videos where a friend is waiting for his friend who is fighting for an opportunity so that he can stab him. You can also run away. Good job for considering your opponents strengths. If it is anything other than a school fight don't go to the ground. Even for a school fight I wouldn't go to the ground if I could. I don't know much about take downs so I cannot tell you more about that.

Something like that anyway so even if I was highly competent with a knife, I don't think I'd carry one around, if I was attacked with one, I'd probably first attempt to find a longer ranged weapon. I think those little flick out battons are a better idea, that way if you get into a knife fight, you can get better distance to stay away from the knife and when you hit them, you're less likely to kill them or seriously injure, which results in less criminal charges.

      Murray Herts The nose contains sensitive nerves and blood vessels. the fact that the nose is mainly cartilage it is very easy to hurt someone's nose with a simple head butt, that's how it is properly done, head on head only creates a head ach. Plus the nise is very sensitive to pressure.

You only need a small amount of power to headbutt your attacker in his fucking face, nose or mouth ! • @anthonyspencer766

    The entire gun disarm segment starting after 1:38 is nonsense. This would never happen and will get you killed. No matter how strong you are, you cannot prevent someone from withdrawing the arm. This hold at the wrist is rubbish. From the moment he got his hands on the attacker's drawing arm at 1:13, he should be driving straight through the body of the attacker and taking him off his feet.
    I respect Shane. But I cringe whenever I see videos on knife defense. Why? Because there is always preempt. The instructor knows what hand Shane is drawing and when. These types of attacks in real life are live, and ambush style. The one thing I agree with is being situationally aware, and ready to put a hand on the wielding arm. But at the same time, you've got to explode through the opponents center line. It has to be one huge burst. Arm extending to catch the wrist, and exploding through the opponent to take them off balance. Then run. All of the shit the instructor is saying to do after catching the wrist will NEVER HAPPEN.
    You will never prevent that person from retracting their arm and continuing the stabbing attack. You cannot do it. You must follow the natural retraction reflex in, so as soon as you are catching the wrist you are simultaneously springing into the opponent as the arm is drawn back. Headbutt and drive your fucking legs as hard as you possibly can. Attempt to knock them over, or at the very least overwhelm them and take them off balance. Then run your fucking ass off, or get to a distance at which you can draw your firearm. **For the love of God, do not attempt any disarming "techniques" once you've caught the hand**.

    • @anthonyspencer766
      @anthonyspencer766 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I watched the videos. Relative to the other demonstrations on YT, they are impressive. These guys are performing quite fast and explosively, so it is truer to a live situation than most. But they don't negate the points I made above, and specifically because:
      (1) The defender still has pre-empt. He is aware of two critical things, which most people in a knife attack never are. Those are that the attacker *has* a knife, and *when* the strike is coming. This instructor, despite moving fast, knows what type of stabs are coming, from which arm, and most importantly, he knows a knife attack is coming period.
      (2) Related to the first point, most knife attackers are *not* approaching you from the front (head-on) and making wide stabbing motions with large rotation at the shoulder, or extending their arm much at all actually. Knife attackers get close and ambush. They don't have a lot of arm motion at all because they are right on you, and just sink the blade into you in close proximity.
      (3) It is unbelievably difficult to get someone in a REAL, LIVE knife attack to drop a knife. The reality is that most strikes to the wielding arm actually INCREASE the attacker's grip on the weapon, not reduce it. The demonstrations are very inaccurate for that reason. The attacker is not going to lose the blade. Rather, they'll retract the arm (which you cannot prevent) and continue to stab chaotically.
      Most knife attacks do not happen with the attacker brandishing the weapon in plain sight and approaching you head on with it. That's for a couple of reasons, namely they *they want the pre-empt* and not to give it to you. They conceal their violence until the last second. Which makes this whole concept of practicing knife disarming utter nonsense when you know the attack is coming.
      The *ONLY* way to avoid being injured in a knife attack is to (A) prevent it by avoiding fringe areas and being situationally aware, or if you are ambushed, (B) attack so aggressively and explosively that you incapacitate the attacker before they can stab multiple times, or (C) attack so aggressively and explosively that you are able to imbalance and drop the attacker so that you can sprint away. Hopefully you have a firearm. Anything to do with disarming the knife from the hand with bars or locks or pressure points is nonsense that will get you hurt worse or killed.

    • @shapowlow
      @shapowlow 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well said man. I agree 100%. Part of the reason is because i have experienced street fight quite few times in my younger days (im still young, but i mean much younger days).
      Addition to what you said about not knowing what they'll draw and when they'll draw, you will NEVER notice that they're already drawing something out until you see the weapon. I mean it. They won't do it that way: draw it in plain sight, bending their arms and showing you they're drawing something? Hell no! They'll close in, block your sight then draw the weapon then attack you.
      Anyone who draws obviously like that can easily be countered by RUNNING the moment you see them draw something. Regardless if it's a gun or a knife. If you see them bend their arm to draw something, RUN THE FUCK AWAY. If it's a gun, it's prolly on safety mode plus they need to slide it first then aim then shoot while making sure they don't pull the trigger to make the shot work. So if you already high tailed yourself before he shows his weapon, you're safe.
      However, now that I think about it, your suggestions might be a lot better than just running. There are times that the opponent is just faster than you and won't even need to aim properly to hit you with a bullet. So maybe it's better to take him down first before you hightail it outta there.

      Thanks, brother. The thing is I actually like krav maga as a style and a form of technical practice. I like the philosophy of explosiveness and aggression and response time. Its more applicable than a lot of heavily "form" driven martial arts that have zero street value. Krav is at least adept at teaching striking, and focusing on inflicting as much damage as quickly as possible. In that sense, it is more aligned with the combatives instructors out there. Again though, when I see krav knife and gun disarms, I cringe.

      +fightTIPS The disarm isn't bad, I've worked something similar to it thousands of times. However that defense against the knife is not realistic. You are not going to catch a knife going to your gut, especially if he is actually trying to kill you. A killer wouldn't attack one time it, it would be back&fourth, back&fourth in quick secession, multiple times without stopping. I'm taking at least 3 stabs in every second, and i'm being modest. You wouldn't get a solid grip before he pulls his knife away and is coming back at you.

      +Keyshawn Jackson When the palm is up on the knife disarm, he is weak at the thumb. if i had the knife i would pull it straight up and push the knife forward. Continue to hit with palms and overwhelm your knife attacker. When you kick or knee... take their space. Keep going forward. The knife is the most dangerous. It can move any direction at any time. Best to just get out of there after you injure your attacker. Groin, Eyes, Throat

    Krav maga is "really bad" seriously those knive defences... simply dont have real world applications outside of that movement, done within training.
    If you want to learn knive defence, your better off learning judo or jujitsu, disarm. And karate for the tie in with distruction strikes/finishing strikes plus their own form of knive defence based more on counter attack rather then disarmament.
    Of course you could change up the specific martail arts. But a grappling art is important for the reaction time, disarming, and even follow through to armlocks and holds. And a striking art will help for the striking part of any knive defense.
    I simply find judo, and karate to be the best fit for me personally. And they tie in great with eachother.

    No one ever carries a knife on their back. It's also pretty rare to carry a gun on the back. If they have a weapon, especially if they plan to use it, it's either going to be already in their hand or in their front pocket/holstered in front. If you have to be able to see them reaching for a weapon to defend against it, you've already lost. Instead, good advice would be to get as close as possible to nullify any advantage the weapon might give. (provided you weren't in a position to flee) from the inside you can throw short punches, knees and elbows, but a knife is difficult to use effectively from that position. You can also preemptively stop actions by feeling for intent. From there, you can apply the correct wrist locks and disarm for the type of weapon you're facing.
