The explanation for why Esteban is popular is the "Poor Little Meow Meow" phenomena.
He's over 50, he's problematic, he makes himself and everyone around him miserable, and he's deeply pathetic and very silly. There is no suffering you can force on this man that he will not self-inflict ×5 worse.
He DOES feel remorse but he IS also going to run to the ends of the earth rather than deal with the aftermath.
Hell several women over the course of the show see him and say "I can make him worse" and I am no different.

The thing abt Esteban- I'm not sure if it's mentioned out loud, but I think the implication is that people literally almost never listened to him? Like he would have all these ideas or suggestions and nobody would ever really take him seriously. He also has a lot of survivors guilt from his parents' deaths, becaude he told them not to go, he had a bad feeling about it, but they went anyway(mentioned in one of the Christmas specials). The Shuriki thing just happened to be the last straw for him. As far as his behavior afterwards is concerned, I personally think it's mostly a defense mechanism he developed during those 41 years under Shuriki. Like yes, it is absolutely his fault she took over, but she was also *terrible* to him while she was in power. Trauma is trauma no matter what causes it and even though he's in a much safer environment now, breaking those habits is going to be *insanely* difficult, because he's been developing like this for the past 41 YEARS of his life, since he was 18 at MOST. The conflict in EoA is incredibly complex, and while Esteban is definitely in the wrong, his motivations make a lot more sense when you consider all the stuff we aren't explicitly told and is left in the subtext. It also compliments Elena's biggest flaw, her impulsivety based on strong emotional reactions, incredibly well. Esteban's actions are incredibly nuanced, and Elena's initial gut reaction prevents her from really seeing that.

Ps: A cool thing I noticed in the Syrena special, when Elena turns invisible to try and avoid Shuriki and co., the one thing that remains visible is the necklace that Cristobal gave her during the big musical number at the beginning, which gives her position away. This is a BRILLIANT way to foreshadow his eventual betrayal.

They did this during the One Saturday Morning era with shows like Recess, Doug, and Teacher's Pet, but those bombed (at least, I know the Teacher's Pet and Doug ones did). So that probably scared them off from doing it again, similar to how the PPG movie bombing scared CN away from doing more theatrical films.

Probably my favorite memory relating to this show is when I was volunteering at a summer camp a few years ago (very important context for the story this was in 2018 and BEFORE Encanto) and some girls(telling no names for obvious reasons) were talking about their favorite Princesses and a little hispanic girl said offhandedly it sucked there were no princesses like her. Than one of the other girls mentioned Elana of Avalor and I thought nothing of this until during the weekend she immediately rushed up to that friend and talked about how she binged the whole show over the weekend.
It was so cute to see the importance of representation in real life.

TO BE FAIR on Esteban's motivation, every other time they bought the coup they emphasised that Esteban agreed on the basis that Shuriki wouldn't hurt anyone, so the revelation that his first option had been to try and warn the King implies that this was Option 2 to keep everyone alive (if a terribly thought out one).
This even lines up with his trauma of warning his parents not to sail out in a storm and them ignoring him and dying, so you can see how a "I have to make everyone listen to me or they will literally die/they will leave me" thought pattern came about.
It makes it all the weird that these aspects don't come up when it gets discussed in the finale. It feels implicit because it was so heavily emphasised before and it fits together neatly, but it's not explicit. They really could have explained it more.
To be honest I was fine with "He was 16. Angsty 16 year olds are easily manipulated. And then he spent the next 42 years stuck with Shuriki as his closest companion so it was basically all downhill from there" as an explenation.

I have a take about the reason why Elena's family that didnt get trapped seemed so willing to join Shuriki. I haven't watched the series but one thinge these people have in common is class. They all knew that when the royal family "died" that they would lose power as well. So they chose to align themselves with the new person in power in hopes of holding onto it. It's actually pretty common in history for members of the higher classes to turn on their people even more to hold onto their status, so it wouldn't be shocking if thats what the writers were kinda alluding to even in a children's show.
Unfortunately, I can imagine the writers didn't go that way since it would've been "too political" for a kids show. And by political I mean "it would reveal to children that political systems are flawed and can be corrupt, so we in power can't show that"
I feel like a big part of what made so many people Esteban fans (myself included) was the haphazard way Disney originally released the series. Since the first ten episodes aired before the StF episode that properly introduced the series, Esteban was a very mysterious character. Why was he excluded from the portrait? Why did he spend the first handful of episodes trying to undermine Elena? How old was he when Shuriki took over/how old is he now? So many questions! To help combat Disney's bonkers move, showrunner Craig Gerber was more forthcoming about Esteban's background than he might have been otherwise, including revealing that his parents died when he was just a boy almost a full two seasons before that was revealed in the show. So the combination of not knowing about his earlier betrayal and learning sympathetic facts about him from the creator upped his appeal.
But another big factor is just the way his voice actor, Christian Lanz, voiced him. So good.

This is pretty much what I like to call de Marlin Effect. Let me explain:
In the test screening of Finding Nemo, the film didn't show Marlin's backstory with Coral untill way after the half of it. Turns out the test screening audiences had already made their own opinion on how annoying and overprotective Marlin was, so even showing an explanation for his attitude didn't change their negative opinion on him. That's why in the final film we're shown his backstory from the very beginning, and that made audiences actually empathize with him despite not agreeing with his methods. That is essentially what happened with Esteban, we were shown his tragic backstory before the impact of his evil actions. If Disney had stuck with the cronological run of the series, without anyone spoiling anything, I'm sure Esteban would actually be hated by every audience despite his motives being explained after.

I thought Sofia started out a bit younger. I thought she, Amber, and James were about 6 going on 7 in Season 1 and about 9 to 10 at the end.
This series had so many iconic and cinema worthy moments. Like in elena and the secret of avalor, all the avalorans storming the palace while singing, suriki, the Delgados and Fiero walking down the staircase of the palace after they obtained the gem of the tiara, in the song of the sirenas, fiero waloing out of the darkness wearing a suriki mask, in the magic within, singing a song during the carnaval and then a hard cut to the dangeons door where Esteban is beeing held. This series was way more professional than it needed to be.
The thing about Elena killing Shurki is that at first it's ambiguous, making it seem like she's trapped in the crystal thing. But the creator confirm she's dead and it was left like that to both children and the execs lol. I love how this Disney jr spinoff show got to kill off a few villains like that.
I like it is able to stand out from Sofia with the more mature stuff and more fleshed out lore through the whole thing. Esteban contrasts with Cedric well and in both cases it's really interesting. You're a bit hard on the poor man lol. Ship wise, the superior one is clearly either Elena/Naomi or Elena/no one because ace queen.
As a spin off it gets credit for standing on its own and only having light Sofia nods so when they happen it's neat and earned. I feel like if this and Sofia weren't Disney Jr branded, they would have all those lore deep dives Owl House has lol.
haha and they made it pretty clear in the end when she was eating popcorn in the audience of dead people in the Spirit World. The creators even thanked Disney for allowing them to point that out.
My Headcanons:
1. Mateo, Gabe, Alonso and Marzel are buddies and hang out quite often.
2. Naiomi will travel to the Island of Neverlad. Why? because she can, but most likely due to random magical shenanigans that sent her there. I imagine her telling the story to the gang them bieng like "whats this girl trippin on?"
3. Esteban is a playboy in desguise. Like, he looks like the grown up ver. of a sugar mommy hunter. Plus, the series shows how he's got his way with the milfs.
4. The series gave gabe just the bare minimun of screen time and character development, because he would have become way to powerfull. Plus, they needed an excuse to inclue a second boy on the team to balance things out.
5. Flo is the WORST. Whish she had never come to life, or at least, be given less much secreen time. Like, it could have been use on something more interesting and important.
6. The Maruvian civilization is still "alive". They became part of the espirit world, and are living their lives as normal as possible. Like a limbo situation plus Atlantis like isolation.
7. Elena traveling to Enchantia and roasting the living f out their goverment.
8. Isabella x Varian (Tangled the series).
9. an overall crosover between Tangled the series and EoA.
If this wasn’t on playhouse Disney and we got to see Esteban being a little ho I probably would’ve liked him more lmaooo

They made Christmas "Wasalia" in Sofia so that they didn't need to alienate other religions that celebrated other winter holidays. Elena celebrates Christmas because Navidad is important to the Hispanic culture Avalor is based on, and it would have been insensitive to change it. They still call it Navi Da, which is Spanish for Christmas because 1- it's part of the culture, and 2- it's enough of a change that Karens of other religions can't get mad that they called it Christmas.
Also, as a Christian, it's really not a big deal that they didn't say Christmas. Good lord, not everyone celebrates it, so just let people be.

It comes down to how Sofia has a more broad appeal, without a definitive culture for its content and style, while Elena of Avalor is more-than-clearly inspired by hispanic cultures specificaly. Besides, Karens will complain about anything, because if they had applied the Wasalia thing to Avalor, then Karens would have ALSO complained about how the show DIDN't call it Navidad since this festivity is important in hispanic cultures
Thank you for covering Elena of Avalor! It’s such a underrated and under appreciated series! *I have seen some fans mentioned that the show should have been advertised as a Disney Television Series/Disney XD instead of only being shown on Disney Junior because of the heavy detailed storylines/lore.*
Sadly it was advertised as a Disney Channel show in the beginning! Unfortunately against the crew's will, Disney bumped it down to Disney Junior and as a result, they had to change some aspects in future episodes just to not make it to dark and heavy for little kids. I'm not entirely sure why Disney did that, but lack of popularity and not much toy sales were definitely part of the reason.
Honestly, I like the idea of it being on Disney after being introduced through Sofia who was on junior. I grew up on both and Elena came out right as I was at the age I wanted more lore and stories so it really would’ve been perfect
The creator said on a podcast that it got bumped because 70% of the show’s viewership was in that Disney Junior (age 2-5) demographic. So it got what he calls “narrowcasted” and pushed towards ONE specific demographic because apparently you can’t cross over demos.
My most vivid memory was when I went as Marimonda for Halloween and ran around the house pretending to control plants and singing songs

One thing that I really wanted to expand upon for a long time was that in the finale, notice how after Elena forgave Esteban and her family shows up, Luisa (abuela) says "You *forgave* him?" in a sort of disbelief kind of way. I think this would set up for a very angsty plotline should you ever delve deeper: Luisa was very adamant about not being able to forgive Esteban (seen especially in The Magic Within), even when her husband Francisco could. Even as she reminisces about Esteban's yearn for love in the past, she retains the same anger as Elena did towards him - after all, she only ever showed him love and he threw all that away to send Avalor into a 41-year long dictatorship and the deaths of her daughter and son-in-law.
Even if it seems like Elena settled things with him, Luisa clearly is still not ready to forgive him yet. Of course, there are no more scenes between Esteban and abuela at this point so it's left up for interpretation. I wanted to make a fanfic for the longest time to address this but never found the time to, but there is so much story potential here alone 😭 Not to mention the fact that Isabel didn't have much say in his villain-to-redemption arc, considering their bond was a special one. The creator, Craig Gerber, even said Isabel was sort of Esteban's weakness. (The creator has answered a lot of plot questions for the series on Twitter/X if you want to check it out!).
Also I wanna leave this off with a few more things: thank you so much for making this video, EoA is a show very special to me and I've been with it since the beginning. It makes me sad to see it tossed aside but your video may be the boost it needs to get more attention, even after 3 years of its ending. Whatever Mateo was gonna say to Elena before Flo interrupted him is still one of the biggest mysteries for the fandom, it haunts us knowing he never got to say it rip
Aand one more fun fact: The voice actor for Migs (jaquin), Chris Parnell, is the same guy who is the Narrator from WordGirl! So many stars voice act in this series, it's really awesome :))
That would’ve been such a great plot line to delve into and maybe it could be a lesson about how some people take more time to forgive than others it would’ve been so interesting! I love this show and it deserved so much more attention :D

@@utahsrainbowsprinkles That really would've been a great lesson to teach, cause a lot of families live through this tension where one person cannot bring themselves to forgive someone even if everyone already did - and if that unforgiven person is actively trying to earn it from them, especially if they were close/family before, I imagine that would create so much inner turmoil cause why *doesn't* this person forgive them already, after all they've done to change? Also I really live for the unexplored angst for this show, there's so much to delve into honestly

Well, it wasn't just ONE time Esteban wasn't listened to. A big thing is that he had a bad feeling about his parents going away on a ship one time, but nobody listened. And his parents never returned from the trip.
I guess he feels like nobody listens to him ever or enough, at least when it's important.
Another angle on the finale is that its less about Elena needing to forgive as it is about descelating the situation. Esteban for the most of the arc has been making terrible choices (as always) but he is effectively trying to run away rather than pick a fight, while Elena's (understandable) agression maintains that and does muddy her objectivity.
Unfortunately the finale suddenly decided to have him target the throne for what is at first presented as a pure power move which felt more for the sake of having a traditional kingdom threat for the finale then in following up on the characterisation.
Then about a third of the way through he explains his logic IS that he needs to do this so he can basically approach Elena and hash things out, but it's easily missed because so much else is going on.
It's more in line with what was being built up previously, and it sets up the lesson that Esteban needs to learn as "to make proper apologies he needs to just be vulnerable and put himself at the mercy of the people he's hurt without putting up defence." In that light Esteban sacrificing himself is doing that literally (though not my favourite trope). Then Elena's reviving is her being given that catharsis as a result and an affirmation that y'know, truly apologising to someone will not literally kill you.
I agree though the finale isn't my favourite part of the show. I think it would have been better to deal with Ash and the Animal Lady in previous episodes, and slim down the antagonistic cast of the special to just Esteban and Cahu, and maybe just have Esteban and Elena talk more.
Maybe have Esteban and Elena trapped together and after their talking/singing it out, Esteban sacrifices himself to get Elena out but gives her something that he knows she can use to bring him back, but also leaves it up to her choice and is at peace with that.
And of course I'd have her bring him back but it's overall less actions done in the moment and more about these characters making these decisions after a lot of processing.
I wish more shows would have the message of it being okay not to forgive people who hurt you. Maybe even that it’s important to move on (not hold on to anger), but that you don’t have to forgive them and let them back in your life.
I personally think that forgiving someone is helping you more on not holding on to anger and moving on, that's why I am very pro with it

Forgiveness isn't always the same as letting someone stay in your life. Forgiveness is letting go of the anger and resentment and refusing to dwell on it. True forgiveness brings a peace to you and honestly can be more for your own sake than the person you're forgiving, especially if they don't want it or were trying to hold what they did over you. In Elena's case, she, though rightfully mad, let her anger put her kingdom in danger because she couldn't let go. It's just in this case, he really did want to change but trauma creates bad habits.... We can argue whether or not she should have let him back in their lives(I think she should. Though I didn't like the fact that the show had him lead an invasion again. That seemed out of character.)But forgiving him was good for her just as much if not more than him.

As somone who loves Esteban, I can explain a few reasons why people like him.
.One of which is just because I ador complex characters, and live for redemption arcs.
.Another reason is that he loves and protects the people he cares for unconditionally (even if at the same time he is acting against them). We see this mainly during the 3rd season. He is constantly telling ash not to hurt Elena, or knocking her weapon away to stop a attack on her. Even after she disowned him, he straight up claimed “She is still my cousin” not long after swatting Ash’s weapon away, that was aimed at Elena.
.Lastly, he does slowly become a better person (attitude wise) as the series went on. During the first season he barley had any respect for Elena, but in season 2 he tells Elena that “You are a good ruler, and one day you will be a amazing queen”. So before his betrayal was revealed, he was becoming more and more likable
Yeah. I think if you just say what he does without context in a video like this it does just make him seem one note but of course, for people who have watched the whole series, there was so much building up to that.

All of this! Esteban may have committed many mistakes, but while he kept such a dark secret to himself, he slowly began to open up to his family and learned to love and respect them again. There were so many sweet bonding moments between Esteban and his family that definitely showcased his character development.
Only when they found his secret and they lashed out against him (which is understandable on their part as well, despite him hoping they'd put it behind them), he regressed and tried to run away from his problems again. His coping mechanism is to run; not confront. So when Elena tries to make him pay for his actions, he only backed away. The only person he can blame is himself, and that idea probably scared him even more. So much complexity to his character for sure

When it came to Elena forgiving Esteban, it felt right to me, as by the end he finally stopped running & chose to take responsibility & take the fall for her so she could live & he apologised. Plus she decided to give Victor another chance - who did the EXACT. SAME. THING.
Forgiveness is never linear either. The situation & someone’s feelings are the biggest factors in whether forgiveness is given or not & either outcome is not wrong, as long as it feels right to the person.
I recently went to Disney World (with my aunt, uncle, cousins who are below six, my parents and grandparents) and they were doing a meet and great with Cinderella and Elena, all she was doing was taking pictures with people and signing autographs, nobody knew who she was and wasn’t talking to any of the kids. I went up to her and told her how much I loved her show. She got really happy, I just wish people recognized her more as a Disney Princess. It’s sad.
I've heard that the Elena actresses get REALLY excited when you know the show because so many people don't and that's on Disney. They didn't push her enough even when the show was airing. It's sad.

Something I think about in regards to Ash and Esteban's team up is that at a young age they started working and living under the adult figure who wrecked their lives and spent most of the rest of their lives like that, and I wonder if they ever talk about it.

One of my most vivid memories of this show is when some girls made fun of me for liking the show because it was "childish." We were 7 years old. I did still like it afterward though.
I did feel bad for Ash until she completely turned on her family. Esteban may not have been the best person but he clearly loved his family through and through that’s why I feel bad for him more than Ash. While Esteban brought his suffering on himself he felt guiltily for it while Ash may not have brought her suffering on herself, she brings suffering to her own family with no remorse and for no valid reason.
So I I have a little theory / hypothesis explaining why they may not be jaguars in the show is due to the fact that maybe while they were designing any of the creatures, they decided to basically combine specific creatures like butterflies and frogs to get the butter frog or macaws in Jaguars to get Jaquins or specifically where Avalor is located, which could be considered a fictionalized version of modern Peru, because of the ancient Maruvian buildings definitely being based on The Inca or many different amalgamation of ancient Mesoamerican cultures

I didn't get the oracle at first either until later episodes. The oracle saying that Isabella was on the throne was because since Elena was gone in the last episodes for some time, the people needed a leader, making Isabella was automatically the next in line for the throne. She basically became kinda like a substitute until Elena returned because when you think about it, the show made it to where Isabella had a royal title, but no one really acknowledged it since Elena would be queen.

It's funny because the little song "Sister Time" just popped into my head a few days ago for absolutely no reason other than it being catchy. I never watched more than two episodes of this show bc I was a little old for this show when it came out but I think it's funny that I see this video right after hearing the song for no reason.
I heard "heart of the jaguar" and my mind IMMEDIATELY flashed to Scooby Doo Mystery Incoperated, and now I want Athena to take a look at it. It was so jam packed for a show with only two series and I was so mad that it was cancelled. It could've easily had a third or spin of series after the ending and I think Athena would have a field day with the amount of lore she can find in that gem of a show.
Also another reccomendation for shows for Athena to watch is detentionaire, I watched it a few years ago and there was so much lore but barely anyone talks about it. I think it was a cartoon network show? (Not completely sure because I remember watching it on POP.) And the art style was so good. Sucks that no one really talks about it.
So I never finished Elena of Avalor but I do remember seeing a little bit of the finale, and through all these years I thought that Esteban's redemption was better than it actually was. Honestly, that's on me for not fact-checking all these years
To be fair, S3 as a whole is a mess. And most of the fandom didn’t notice or talk about it while it was airing. In fact, you were actively shut down in fandom spaces if you dare criticise it.
To be fair I think this overview does skip over some aspects of his arc that make it more convincing. Like on top of the previous two seasons of developmenr he does feel real remorse for his actions and continuously interferes to stop Ash from hurting Elena. He also does try apologising (badly) and joins the other villains out of a desire for safety rather than a power grab. His flaw is that he runs away rather than face the consequences.
I agree though the finale could have handled the culmination better.
As a person who never watched this show, this is a great video! (p.s- if you need any ideas, a wild kratts lore video would be cool)

As an Esteban enjoyer, I do agree with most of your criticisms of him. They are very valid and he definitely deserved more consequences for his actions but alas. Your proposed ending for him is also interesting! I think the whole point of Elena forgiving Esteban should have been something that unshackled her from the past, but that wouldn't unshackle Esteban from it. He is fueled by the guilt and pain of his betrayal that he wouldn't have forgiven himself. It was selfish for sure to expect his family to forgive him after a simple apology but it's really how he couldn't even see himself as his own person in a sense. He did everything for Avalor and his family after they were all reunited, but it was to cover up his massive guilt. So first he loses his kingdom by running away from prison and then he loses his family when Elena officially disowns him which sends him into this spiral of self-sabotage. But when confronted with his family facing the consequences of his actions he does the selfless thing and saves Elena. Because of this, she can forgive him for what happened in the past but he is still guilty of his other crimes. Even if all of his actions came from all of his unresolved traumas in the real world that wouldn't just be a reason to sweep everything he's done under the rug. I think Esteban should be trapped in his mind prison to sort out his feelings and actually come to terms with what he did. Then he can chill with his family again. The only consequence he got was losing his job boohoo :(

Something I was really impressed with was the series finale and the build-up to it. Most of the things we saw throughout the series ended up being important for the final battle as they prepared for it. I especially love what the final test ended up being: very subversive and it felt earned in the end.
Thoroughly enjoyed the series. Kinda wish that not every episode had a song, as it felt a bit forced at times, however there were some memorable songs there (my favourite being Elena’s “My Time”).
I hit that like button so hard when you mentioned the whole Mateo and Carla ship being ridiculous lol (I personally ship Elena and Mateo)! Elena of Avalor was such an amazing show with such deep lore, and I am so happy you delved right into it. Wonderful video; I had so much fun watching! :)

I remember my sister watching this show a lot when we first got Disney+ and I remember unironically loving it because of the plot and lore. Sadly, my sister grew out of it and I no longer had an excuse to watch more of it.
I watched Sophia the first when I was younger when we had cable television so it’s kind of cool they made this series that’s connected to Sophia for the young-young kids of today. (That’s not to say my mom was okay with me watching it once she had to option to make me watch something else when we got Netflix, she did. She thought it was teaching me “witchcraft” I’m so lucky she didn’t do the same for my sister lol)
I watched this show while pregnant with and taking care of my infant daughter. I will now indulge in this while prepping for her first day of Kindergarten. Thanks for the awesome videos for shows I always thought had too young of a demographic to get content for.

There are Two shows that would be perfect do a lore deep dive. Ever After High - Its beautiful - and Ducktales (2017) - There's very little of the forgiveness solution archetype over there.
The Rocketeer 2019 is an underrated Disney junior cartoon and deserves more attention. And she does fail a couple of times despite being considered a prodigy. Also tesh and kit are cool. Valkyrie is untrustworthy sometimes at least in my opinion.
When that show was first announced, I was perplexed that this of all Disney movies got a pre-school spinoff as it's a pretty tense/violent movie. But I'm glad they found a way to make it work, I guess.

Kit isn't the first female rocketeer, she also isn't the first none White rocketeer, she is the youngest though. To bad none of the other rocketeers are mentioned despite the novel references, the only ones that are mentioned are kit and the original.

Something that i wanna say is that i think Enchancia is a kingdom thats more accurate to history, Avalor is the way disney changed things to make them more "balenced" so to speack.
