Does anybody remember the episode where they put Martha on a diet? I remember they were basically body shaming her and Martha was hungry and sad the whole episode. Then at the end, the girl is like "Yay! You're belly isn't touching the floor anymore! Here's some food!" WAS I IMAGINING THIS??
I don't think i remember THAT one but I didn't watch the show as much as I did for other cartoons, so I wouldn't have a lot of memory of this show. You can go to someone who watched it all the time LOL I know about every kids cartoon from our era or close to it. but I mostly watched Nick Jr/Noggin, Sprout, and Qubo. I watched PBS kids but not enough of it to remember that episode (I remember a few different episodes of Martha Speaks very vaguely)
Yep, Martha was obese due to only eating alphabet soup and the family decided to put her on a diet for the sake of her health, and jokingly bodyshamed her throughout the episode. When she was got into her ideal weight, they allowed her to eat once more
It was called Too Much Martha and ...yeeaahhh... it wasn't great. I remember that I would avoid that episode like the plague when I was a kid because it seemed so needlessly cruel. Basically the message is that plus sized people should starve themselves until they get to an acceptable weight then they will have permission to eat because they "earned it" Which is a horrible message for anyone especially for a cartoon meant for preschoolers. Gotta start em early with the body dysmorphia I guess. Side Note: Why did so many 90s/2000s children's cartoons feel the need to introduce children to diet culture? Arthur had a very similar episode where he was feverishly obsessing over his weight due to him needing to where "husky sized" pants. It's especially jarring in shows where the whole message is that people deserve respect no matter what they look like.
I'm from Poland and as a kid I loved this cartoon, and only now did I discover that Martha got a polish soup in the original (in the version I watched this in it was french) and I just had to watch the english version of the episode and boy oh boy, does this not sound like polish at all lol Don't really blame them though polish is hard af
Martha just being able to request various reality-breaking things from the narrator reminds me of how in The Simpsons you have Ned Flanders who is just buddy-buddy with God and so sometimes just gets help from Him when he asks.
My all time favorite episode of the entire show was the episode where they retell greek myths and the way TD got SO fed up when the myths ended with forever is my favorite
I love that Martha is the only character that immediately comes to mind who is situationally Harkness Compliant and can actually lose that status just by fasting. How awkward. Also, I have a picture of Rarity from My Little Pony signed by Tabitha St. Germaine, saying we'll meet again in another show. A friend got it for me and told her I loved her in MLP, Littlest Pet Shop, and Martha Speaks, and I just couldn't be there to meet her and get an autograph in person.
I'm gonna be surprised If I see a "Dinosaur Train" lore vid from you one day.... Anyway, good vid!! Also remembered this: After Skits wasn't able to speak from the alphabet soup, there was an argument from a later episode of TD & Alice talking about that. They also discussed how Skits is taller than Martha despite being much younger than her.
8:30 what’s funny is that the only thing that keeps dogs from talking is that they can’t understand the language they actually have the vocals for it that’s why sometimes you’ll hear dogs making sounds that sound like human voices meaning that Martha was just able to speak, but didn’t decide to until she ate them SpaghettiOs

oooh yes i love the electric company. i kept expecting them to cameo or crossover on odd squad at some point. both shows have a group of kids solving odd problems often caused by villains.
I never watched or seen the new Electric Company I do remember seeing commercials for it on Cable, PBS Kids, KCET and KLCS lol. But I like how satirical and Family Guy or King of the Hill styled WordGirl, Martha Speaks and Curious George were at times. Martha Speaks and George was honestly calm noise for preschool and toddler aimed shows lol.
I really appreciate the topics and how you cite your episodes/sources! I watch old kids shows to help me sleep on rougher nights, just finished "my life as a teenage robot" (the visuals are awesome!) and honestly I'm on dragon tales rn and the music is absolutely bopping. Also there's an episode of Peppa pig where she and her brother chase their parents holding a happy little spider and it is an absolutely hilarious clip that anyone who watches little ones can relate to lol
@@Angela.Perkins Understandably so! I told my little cousins (even as a kid myself lol) never to move any unknown critter with their bare hands and to always get someone older to help. I'm from Florida and while I don't think we have as many dangerous spiders, we still have our black widows and brown recluses, who try to come in during the wet season, so I was surprised that the "grown ups" let the episode be made at all. That said I've definitely carried some poor crickets and worms towards phobic family members lol. None were harmed but it definitely comes as a memory anytime I think about that episode, and I never shall torture the little bugs that way again lol. Thanks for the fun fact!
literally as SOON as you mentioned being grown and still loving kids show music, the FIRST thing i thought of was mlp music. The Goof-Off Master, What My Cutie Mark is Telling Me, A True True Friend all permanently changed my brain chemistry and i still listen to them to this day, among so many others. you are so valid
And through the entirety of this video, you never mentioned my favorite Martha Speaks episode. Myth Me? and TD's Myth Take. They talk about Greek myths and they even imagine a world where Medusa, the lady that is so ugly that anyone who sees her face will be turned to stone, and King Midas, the guy cursed to turn everything and everyone he touches into gold, are in love. It is just a hilarious concept and I want three seasons and a movie please and thank you.
You're definitely not alone in the category of adults who love kids show music. In particular, I'm a big fan of Sharon Lois & Bram's Elephant Show. I can probably trace my modern eclectic music tastes straight to watching that as a toddler.
When you said Big Minnie, real fear was struck in me and I remembered a suppressed memory of when I first saw that episode and for some reason thought it was a large Minnie Mouse silhouette and was afraid that it lived in my closet from ages 4-8 (when we moved) Also I VIVIDLY remember the Greek mythology episode

This is gonna sound silly but im polish and raised on martha speaks and somehow the fact that martha learns specifically polish in that one episode made me really happy :)
The episode that freaked me out the most when I was a kid was the campfire one where they were telling scary stories. From the plant thing coming to life to the humanoid cats disguised as humans to the aliens, I was terrified
i don't understand why this kind of content is so entertaining, but i do understand that it's made even better by your sense of humor, i absolutely love the abundance of personality in every one of your videos.
I have a suggestion, can you tackle VeggieTales lore? There's actually a lot to look at. For example, Oscar the Polish Caterer from the silly song featured in "The Little Drummer Boy" is the same Oscar from Larry's monologue in the silly song "I Love My Lips."
Isn't that the same Ocsar the Polish Caterer who is featured in the VeggieTales Christmas CD's parody of the 12 days of Christmas? Oscar, having showed up late to the Christmas party, sings about all the kinds of Polish Christmas dishes he brought.
@@christiannanemec234 Yes, that's the one I'm talking about. The animated version of the song was featured in "The Little Drummer Boy" as it's silly song segment.
This show was my childhood!! So much so, I had made my own theory of how Martha's body had the ability to process the alphabet soup to her brain, because of it being in her dna or something. And how it could affect her siblings and mom if it were the case. Cause she could've gotten it from her mom or dad (despite him never being mentioned), how only one person, looking in the soup itself, never thought to look in her dna (from what I remember), and explaining how a dog not related to Martha, not being able to speak when also having the soup.
I had a similar theory. The thing is, no earth animal can do what Martha does. No EARTH animal. If you've seen Athena's video on Wordgirl, you know that apparently monkeys also evolved on Lexicon. If monkeys can exist on two planets, why not dogs? I think I know where Martha's father came from.
14:35 My thoughts on the computer episode were always that Martha probably did fall asleep on the keyboard and was looking at some meat or something and spam ordered steaks while she slept, like face on the enter key or something, but that was just my head cannon
TD was the best part of the show. I remember in one episode he put a trophy he got with Alice in the junkyard, and when it went missing the blamed himself. Not because he thought it was his fault, but because he thought he STOLE it, from himself....
9:44 Yes! This Day Aria and Open Up Your Eyes are bangers villain songs. Also, for kids shows with fantastic music, I recommend Phineas and Ferb. And Adventure Time. And Littlest Pet Shop has some bops as well.
AAAAAAA i only watched the polish dub of Martha speaks as a child and in that version from what I remembered she instead started speaking french (?). And when watching that episode in english I got whiplash omg

One of the weirdest freaking parts of the show to me centers on Nelson in the Alice's birthday episode. It's revealed at the end that Nelson is like... an evil super-spy basically??? He uses a freaking grappling hook to frame Martha for eating Alice's cake, and it's absolutely bizarre. Also the Belgium song FREAKING ROCKS! That entire episode is like a core memory, man.
Man, I loved this show as a kid. Most kids got into mythology from Percy Jackson, no, for me that one mythology-centered Martha Speaks episode fueled the obsession I can still remember every scene despite not having watched it in over a decade.
5:06 why did this masterpiece, flow out of my mouth after you said that. “my dog ate my glock, not clickbait! 3 am Challenge gone wrong!? (He turned into a Machine gun!)”
I forgot about this show for quite a while and when I was younger- I used to think that if I gave my dog alaphabet soup she would start talking to me- I loved this show so much and I'm glad someone knows about it
Daniel Ingram made the music to Martha Speaks. He also did the music for My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. That’s probably why the music on both shows is good.

12:46 Not a show, but a movie. Air Bud's Super Buddies. It's been years since I've seen it, but im sure one of the dogs had super speed and made a tornado using their speed in that movie.
I thought Martha was a boy because of how androgynous she looks and sounds. It would be cool to see you do a video on the Big Time Rush show. The way the show characterizes the main boys is interesting. James (the character) is usually very arrogant but his personality changes a ton when he’s stressed or things don’t go the way he wants. Also, it seems like Carlos is very unlucky in the show.
Huh, so I wasn't the only one who was kid of originally a bit confused on Martha's gender at first until my teacher told me on how Martha was exclusively a female name in English.
Other weird things: - Martha talking to bird talking to a giraffe talking to a monkey to understand said monkey -monkey scientist loving Martha and appreciating her more than Helen - 🎶 CAROLINA BE MY VALENTINAAAA NOTHING WOULD MEAN MORE TO MEEE 🎶 - Nelson apparently being a spy with gadgets - Martha being able to speak in code after eating TD’s code translation paper AND BEING ABLE TO SPEAK IN TD CODE THAT WAS NOT ON THE PAPER AND THAT TD HIMSELF CANT INTERPRET. AND SHE UNDERSTANDS THESE MEMORIES RHAT TD NEVER SHARED BEFORE. - The janitor not liking dogs in the school not bc they’re dirty but because they’ll get too smart and soon humans will be cleaning after them - Martha speaking Spanish after eating Helen’s uncle’s soup NOT ALPHABET SOUP JUST SOUP - Ronald booing his own parents play (not unexpected but just dude what 💀)

Another interesting thing in the show was the Thanksgiving special where Martha has a whole dog family reunion (she has like 6 siblings apparently) and has a complete backstory of how she ended up in the pound later to be adopted which I thought was cool :0
I remember that episode! There was a book version of it too

Big Minnie unlocked childhood memories, man. I 100% remember watching Martha Speaks as a kid, but Big Minnie…
I remember a weird episode where one of marthas human friends turned into a dog, a black border Collie to be exact, and the human Collie was put in a Shelter, and Martha tried to explain that It was one of the humans but they didnt belive her bc you know thats insane, and they were about to put down the human Collie until Martha was able to convince the human Collie's dad by mentioning they had the same color eyes. Idk if this was a Mandela efect or if anyone else just has a really prominent memorry in the back of their mind bc that episode was trauma
Might have been a dream? An episode like that seems out of character for the show, in my opinion.
I'm pretty sure that was a dream! I think it was specifically Carolina's dream.
@@maximummftw it was both a part of the show and a dream lol. In the Martha speak canon it never actually happened and was just a dream that Carolina had, but it was an episode on the show. Carolina dreamt that she turned into a dog and nobody believed it was her
Does anybody remember the episode where they put Martha on a diet?

Martha just being able to request various reality-breaking things from the narrator reminds me of how in The Simpsons you have Ned Flanders who is just buddy-buddy with God and so sometimes just gets help from Him when he asks.
I love how PBS kids sneak life lessons/learning lessons into their shows. I think PBS kids taught me more than school ever did.
My all time favorite episode of the entire show was the episode where they retell greek myths and the way TD got SO fed up when the myths ended with forever is my favorite
i loved martha speaks when i was little, im so glad youre covering this! the scientist dude having lore is wild tho

Some of the Sofia the First songs go SO HARD I can’t even. If you haven’t watched that show Athena, you definitely should. It’s a trip and I think you would have a lot of fun. Love your videos!❤

If you want a show like Martha speaks and wordgirl watch the electric company its so good
@Magic Mangle The Electric Company and Fetch ! with Ruff Ruffman were supposed to get one more season but both were scrapped for unknown reasons.
I used to be watching The Electric Company like Arthur, Cyberchase, Martha Speaks, WordGirl, Fetch, and Between the Lions on PBS Kids Go after school I almost forgot about that show not gonna lie lol. 😂
oooh yes i love the electric company. i kept expecting them to cameo or crossover on odd squad at some point. both shows have a group of kids solving odd problems often caused by villains.
As a kid I grew up with PBS Kids as my main form of cartoons. So now I'm really hoping that you're going to review more of them
I really appreciate the topics and how you cite your episodes/sources!
Dragon tales is one of the best.
I think I heard the spider episode of Peppa Pig was banned in Australia because Australia has so many poisonous spiders.
I have a friend who's obsessed with Dragon tales. My favorite songs in a kids show is probably Maggie and the ferocious beast
literally as SOON as you mentioned being grown and still loving kids show music, the FIRST thing i thought of was mlp music. The Goof-Off Master, What My Cutie Mark is Telling Me, A True True Friend all permanently changed my brain chemistry and i still listen to them to this day, among so many others. you are so valid
Yes I love those
And through the entirety of this video, you never mentioned my favorite Martha Speaks episode. Myth Me? and TD's Myth Take.
Wasn't there also an episode of the show where a bunch of the characters put on a Shakespeare play?
You're definitely not alone in the category of adults who love kids show music. In particular, I'm a big fan of Sharon Lois & Bram's Elephant Show. I can probably trace my modern eclectic music tastes straight to watching that as a toddler.
I love a true true friend from MLP and brand new sound from Barbie rock and royals
When you said Big Minnie, real fear was struck in me and I remembered a suppressed memory of when I first saw that episode and for some reason thought it was a large Minnie Mouse silhouette and was afraid that it lived in my closet from ages 4-8 (when we moved)

This is gonna sound silly but im polish and raised on martha speaks and somehow the fact that martha learns specifically polish in that one episode made me really happy :)
That reminds me of how I love the miraculous New York special as an American for some reason
The episode that freaked me out the most when I was a kid was the campfire one where they were telling scary stories. From the plant thing coming to life to the humanoid cats disguised as humans to the aliens, I was terrified
Martha Speaks was truly one of the shows ever. But I didn't know that the show's lore was this dark
i don't understand why this kind of content is so entertaining, but i do understand that it's made even better by your sense of humor, i absolutely love the abundance of personality in every one of your videos.

Im just now finding these pbs kids video essays and my life is complete im so happy you’re amazing thank you for making these videos!
14:35
My thoughts on the computer episode were always that Martha probably did fall asleep on the keyboard and was looking at some meat or something and spam ordered steaks while she slept, like face on the enter key or something, but that was just my head cannon
I loved Martha Speaks so much as a kid. I just saw it as this hilarious and insane entertaining type of mess and I ate up every second of it
I thought the same thing watching her video on Super Why
TD was the best part of the show. I remember in one episode he put a trophy he got with Alice in the junkyard, and when it went missing the blamed himself. Not because he thought it was his fault, but because he thought he STOLE it, from himself....
10:57 Sounds like a message from a totalitarian soup regime.
My younger sister LOVED this show, I constantly get the theme song stuck in my head 😅 You’re video is hilarious, as usual 💞

9:21 Damn Martha lore and cakes. This video has it all.
I was such a big fan of this show when I was younger that my dog’s middle name is Martha. This should be an interesting watch.
I remember playing and adoring the pbs kids games on my computer when I was a kid, I still vividly remember spreading sauce on a pizza
Man, I loved this show as a kid. Most kids got into mythology from Percy Jackson, no, for me that one mythology-centered Martha Speaks episode fueled the obsession I can still remember every scene despite not having watched it in over a decade.

Daniel Ingram made the music to Martha Speaks. He also did the music for My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. That’s probably why the music on both shows is good.

Something to support the scientist being the director: The scientist looks vaguely like Steven Spielberg.
