The vibe I get with the time travel is that it can be done completely freely, but the they’ve set up the stations and tunnels as consistent time points to make the infrastructure needed for commercialization. Helps prevent paradoxes. It kind of reminds me of the Doctor insisting “We’re part of events now!” as a reason they don’t leave when things get deadly. Once you touch a time, it gets made cotemporal with you.
as a kid, i always assumed the time periods were not linear, but rather existing all at the same time. so the “present” in one period would align with the “present” in another. i thought of the time periods more as places rather than actual time in that sense. i don’t really have much evidence to support this since it was a while since i’ve watched it, but it’s mostly because when they would go to another period, it seemed like time resumed as normal there if that makes sense, so they were traveling more so to a place rather than a time
I can't believe you didn't mention the best part of the show: Don keeps calling the Conductor "Mr. The Conductor" and it's just hilarious for no reason.
If you wanna check out more PBS Kids shows, I’d definitely recommend Fetch! With Ruff Ruffman. It was basically my entire childhood, the theme song slaps, and it was both educational and very entertaining. It’s basically about a reality/game show, except all the contestants are real-life children and the host is a cartoon dog. As a kid, I knew that all the characters I watched in tv weren’t actually real, but for some reason I was absolutely CONVINCED that Ruff and all his cartoon friends were real, maybe because of the format of the show having them interact with the real world so much. But there are some episodes I remember VIVIDLY to this day, and they really did teach me things sometimes. For another popular choice, I’d recommend Wild Krats, which is absolutely incredible. But Ruff is still my favorite, always was as a kid.
I loved fetch!!! I remember on the pbs kids website back in the day, ruff ruffman would release mini podcasts that you could download and I was OBSESSED
Fun Fact: Stygimoloch may not have actually existed. A lot of studies have found that Stygimoloch was likely just a juvenile Pachycephalosaurus, but because of morphological change that comes with age, it was initially presumed they were different species because of variances between fossils. It’s a really good demonstration of how fast data on dinosaurs specifically can change, and probably why there’s so much dinosaur media for kids: someone’s gotta keep them updated lol
@@AthenaPOfficial funny story but Troodon also didn’t exist. Now it’s been placed into two genuses so the troodons here can be interpreted as a hyper advanced time traveling species of Troodontid that some how either escaped the kpg or just decided to go back to when it didn’t happen. Edit: I just realized you mentioned that lol my bad.
Y’know what’s ironic? They recently reclassified Stygimoloch to be a separate species of Pachycephelosaurus, but they kept the name as “The Demon Of The River Styx”, is a rather baddass name
I once had a dream where I was in a school and I somehow noclipped out of the boundaries of the school and I found this "unused" untextured grey room and inside was the train conductor but he was evil and had hyperrealistic blood running from his eyes
One time I had a dream where a Stegosaurus statue came to life and started slaughtering people in New York. I ran into a science center and hid above an exhibit. There were like 10 other people there with me and one of them fell and was immediately eviscerated.
I can't look at this show the same anymore without thinking of the robot chicken gag where the dad kicked the mom out because he saw the T-Rex egg and thought she had an affair lol
I enjoyed Caillou 😅 and never understood the hate, but then i realized I only have memories of the puppet parts of the show and people only ever talk about the animated parts so it seems I blocked out all the bad stuff
It's quite impressive that despite how many PBS Kids shows have been made and how long PBS Kids has been making shows (I think since the 60s with shows like Mr. Roger's Neighborhood and Sesame Street), there are very few "bad" shows from this network. I think Caillou and Teletubbies are the only two PBS Kids shows that are truly bad, and even Teletubbies isn't really harmful, just stupid and boring.

I don't care liking trains is an autistic stereotype, I'm autistic and I loved train shows like this one and Thomas the Tank Engine. Because real talk: Trains are wonderful! I've only lived in the NYC metro area but wherever we went, we've made sure to live in an area close to trains. Whether it was riding the Metro-North's Hudson Line for the wonderful views of the Palisades or a bi-level/double decker NJ Transit or LIRR train, being in a train is an experience. Being able to zoom by cars and not have to worry about traffic jams is a sigh of relief. Trains go right into the soul of countries. Trains have kept the US moving, whether it's freight or historically settling the western states. And they deserve to be treated better!
y'know what? you're right. trains ARE wonderful! i'm also autistic and definitely had a big train obsession when i was a kid. now that i'm older i've transitioned from trains to boats, which is kinda ironic because i'm actually afraid of the ocean and any kind of deep/open water.
Completely forgot Dr. Scott was in this show, and I started freaking out when I saw him. He was in Dinosaur Planet, the first dinosaur documentary I remember watching, and he has such enthusiasm about the animals he’s talking about. He was to me what Nigel Marvin was to the other half of dinosaur fans.
My guess with the tail is familiarity, like the way delivery robots make faces now. It's to simulate the emotions shown by dinos through their tails, making the train endearing.
also because its the only thing like it that most of them interact with at all, like we dont see them with any other sorts of technology, a trail would definitely freak most of them out at least at first

Also wouldn’t Ms. Frizzle technically be committing multiple counts of Child Endangerment? I don’t know, something about sending Kids in a Volcano, some other kid’s digestive system and watching the bus slowly erode and a Car engine with them inhaling fumes (memory check me if they were actually doing safety precautions, it’s been a hot minute) just doesn’t feel right. I feel like I’m thinking too much but I can’t help but do. I need help.

it's so sad this show is very old because a lot and I mean a LOT of things have been outdated. like the existence of Troodon (they are an entire family called Troodontids with dinosaurs like Latenivenatrix) the designs of EVERY SINGLE PTEROSAUR IN THE ENTIRE SHOW and Buddy being a shrunk-down version of adult T. rex
I used to go to a Christian private school & the teachers would play this show for the little kids, which I find very funny because the books they'd give us to read said dinosaurs never existed. Didn't stop me from loving Dinosaur Train lmfao
I also used to go to a Christian school who hates magic and anything to do with magic including tv shows, books, and movies yet they had Harry Potter books and posters (same for Percy Jackson)💀
This show always made little me a bit sad because I couldn't shake the fact that the Triassic and Jurassic characters were all dead relative to the main characters' part of the timeline.
I was a little too old for this show when it came out, but I WAS a big Dinosaur kid. And would have been obsessed with this show had it come out when I was younger.
Same, I was already a teen by the time this show first aired but my sister was young enough that she would watch it - became OBSESSED lol so I ended up watching pretty much the entire show anyways. Actually really good, I liked the characters a ton and the theme song stayed stuck in my head all the time
Seriously, this show is so underrated. This show came out when I was around 10, so I think I was technically considered too old to watch it, but man, I think I learned more about dinosaurs from this show alone than I did at school.
Same, I remember watching cinemawins video on Jurassic world 3, and he said that dino train didn't do it for his son after reaching 4, and that just baffled me. I started watching the show when I was 5 and kept watching it for years. I didn't get into Jurassic park and more "mature" dinosaur media until I was 11 or 12 and for me nothing still rival dino train, dino Dan and land before time, it's a shame how overlooked they are.
Dr Scott: Dynonicus probably did use their terrible claw to catch other animals! Kids: *entirely cheerless yaaay* Athena, on the verge of tears: _why are you cheering-?_
Random rant: the theme song bothers me because I never saw the first episode and it made me think the t-rex wound up in the nest by accident. And I was like "Wait, are they not like... curious? Is someone not looking for him?" This is the first time I'm finding out that's not what happened.
Same here. A few years back I really started thinking about it, and started to realize he was obviously the son of that T-Rex family that lived nearby. Knowing now that he's adopted makes it all so much simpler.
Omg that show was the best!!! What was your favourite episode? I liked the one where they went to get a cookie and Harry ate it in his sleep and they had a full blown investigation lol
My younger autistic self was obsessed with it, and it led me into a (further) spiral of wanting to learn? Now I'm becoming in college to become a teacher!
Me too! PBS kids is all I watched as a child and it made me dive deeper into learning about everything. And I’m also now studying to become a teacher! Good luck in your journey!
I was too old for this show as a kid but I'm a palaeontologist so obviously I had to watch this video. Lemme know if you want any more dinosaur facts, Athena!
This show actually gave me my first ever nightmare (it was surprisingly grotesque since I was only 5 years old when I had it) so growing up I had a love-hate relationship with the show. I’m glad to see it finally talked about lol
Dinosaur train just got me into palaeontology, I was just addicted to it that much it was one of my favorite shows, along with Octonaughts (yes, I was the kid who watched those "informative cartoons" as my favorites on our free to air child channel) I still have so many dinosaur books
I always found it funny that none of the Dinosaurs questioned why people were going back in time to see them. Like they're straight up saying that they don't exist anymore. Because if some creatures from the future showed up and said they wanted to meet my species my immediate response after "What the Hell are you???" and "Wait Time Travel is real???" would be "Well why didn't you just visit us in your time?"
I feel like we need to give dinosaurs general names because all of the names of these are basically just taxonomy names, so I think we need better names for them
On the subject of The Tail; what if the train is itself a horrifically mutated living dinosaur that the Troodons either grew around machinery or dissected and combined with the machinery
Same, he does seem to behave a bit differently than the other dinos although I had no idea what neurodivergent meant when I watched this show as a kid.
Dinosaur Train wasn't the only dinosaur thing Craig did! He also animated the Jurassic Park music video for WEIRD AL YANKOVIC in 1993! I don't blame Buddy for being fascinated with trains! I love traveling by train. You just see so much stuff closeup by train, not to mention being able to stretch and walk around unlike a car! Trains take you to places that you'd just fly over if you were flying by plane. It's why I took the train to Vladivostok, Beijing, and Hanoi for summits with Putin, Xi Jinping, and Trump respectively. My family have our own personal train that was passed down to me. My grandpa visited every socialist state in Europe by train in 1984 from Pyongyang to East Berlin via China. And my dad died in one in 2011 while on his way for an inspection.
This video truly speaks to the younger version of me that was watching dinosaur train with my little brother and also spiraling trying to understand the lore
I did not expect muppets when you were about to reveal what you associate Jim Henson with, lol! Whenever I hear that name, Dark Crystal and Labyrinth are the first things to pop into my head, and frankly, that makes it way more unnerving to see that name tacked onto this cute dinosaur show.
Sid the Science Kid was a mindful**k as well. The show takes place in a school but we only see like four students and one teacher. It also uses "digital puppetry" which makes the characters look like Pixar/Muppet hybrids. The songs are all earworms too.
Oh- oh god how did I forget about sid the science kid? I remember dinosaur train but although sid did exist in some vague form in my head I couldn’t remember that show. And now I looked it up and the animation terrified me so yay
Potential explanation for the train having a tail: maybe it was used to maintain the balance of the train so it didn’t get derailed? With so many different dinosaurs of varying sizes on the train surely the weight distribution would get thrown off every now and again
The thing with Troedons that I find odd is how so many of them are more educated and "humanized" than the other dinosaurs. This reminds me of the ending of the book Animal Farm where, spoilers ahead, the pigs became the superior "race" on the farm due to the fact they only they were allowed to be educated while the other animals had to do slave labor and weren't able to take classes. It seems that Troedons have access to technologically advanced tools and live in normal buildings while the other dinos are in their natural habitats... Is there Troedon supremacy in the Dinosaur Train universe 🤔??!
The hidden lore of Dinosaurs Train is that is actually a dinosaur themed retelling of animals farm pretending to be a regular learning show with troodons being the pigs
Maybe the Troodons are people. Like humans put themselves in the bodies of Troodons or something. That’s why they live in houses, have technology, could’ve brought other dinosaurs back to life, ect. Ps just recently discovered ur videos and it’s great to see how much a crazy channel like urs is growing!💓
I was always under the impression that the dinosaurs had a mutual understanding that they all needed to eat out of necessity, so hunting wasn't personal unless it was someone you knew. Glad I'm not the only one who thought the time-travel was weird though.
I’m not sure how much overlap there is between the Dinosaur Train and All Tomorrows fandoms but the Troodons being aware of so much of the history of life at 19:45 gives me those vibes.
I think that the reason why the passengers don’t just eat other or capture each other is two-fold: 1.They get to return to their time period to eat their (possibly less sentient) prey. 2.They can communicate with each other quite easily. That first idea is an unintentionally less awkward explanation than what can be said about Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa and Zootopia, where you could assume that they, the predators, ate the much older animals and dead animals and replaced some other animals as food instead of devouring the continuing and general populace of prey as they reproduce.
This Brough back memories from a completely different show I have had hidden in my subconscious. Did anybody else watch DinoTrux when they were younger or was I literally the only one bc I would not be shocked. I remember there being so much lore that I couldn't understand bc I was 9 years old and stupid. I can only imagine the chaos of an analysis of that.
I made a joke on Twitter that the world of Dinosaur train could honestly be a kid friendly version of possible prehistorical historical lore for the world of Beastars. Minus the time traveling junk obviously But think about it. They both have anthropomorphized animals with human like intelligence herbivores and other dinos don’t always feel comfortable with carnivore predators (with carnivores eating basically the rotting meat of other dinosaurs. I mean who knows they could’ve been eating a long lost friend and they didn’t even know it) and even Beastars kinda went over the concept of dinosaurs within their world building and how it differs compared to the discovery of dinosaurs within our own world. Even if it is a bit wonky at times like Rex-mas lol
How did I not question how 2 pterodactyls had a t-rex child as a kid. I was unaware of adoption then so I guess I was just fully convinced two pteranodons reproduced and made a full tyrannosaurus???
I remember that for some reason when I was a little kid, I found it really interesting that the animators gave the baby T-rexes a different head shape from the adult ones. Also, wasn’t there an ongoing joke in the show that the dad didn’t get along with one of their neighbors?
When I saw the thumbnail, I took a deep breath. First Martha Speaks and now this, are you making videos about all of my most obscure childhood memories? Edit: This brings back so many memories! I remember being very invested in the relationship the Conductor had going on.
I'm so glad you're also appeasing to gen z nostalgia as well with the pbs shows Athena, I can't wait to watch! This also used to be my all time favorite show
Assigning the Pteranodon family the tropes: The Dad: Just here The Mom:Soccer Mom Tiny: The youngest child Shiny:The oldest/Material Gworl Don: Small thing that eats whatever it can fit in its mouth/ Rabid child Buddy: The cool nerd who likes food Edit:Ok but her makeup is fire - 8:28 sent me -If i remember right, we actually did see an episode where they all grow up,we see buddy as a adult (i only remember this cause i was disapointed that buddy looked like a borzoi)
*I never realized how dark this series was* Also as a kid I LOVED seeing the inside of the Time Tunnel! All those colors zooming and flashing by in a vast black background . . . mesmerizing.
Athena, PLEASE review the lore of Miss Spider's Sunny Patch Friends. This video made me suddenly remember it and it seems very up your alley. Edit: someone else suggested Wild Kratts. I strongly second this
I loved the show as a kid. I was adopted, and it was always nice to see a show with a family adopting a kid and the kid and the siblings just hang out.
I always wanted to eat the fish and meat in the show, it just looked so delicious. Also I still sing Tiny's song. "If I had one wish, my favorite dish, it'd be more-- FISH!!!"
I wasn’t the intended demographic, but this show was a fun little way to brush up on my dino knowledge. Showing age, but it reminded me of Boneheads Detectives of the Paleoworld, in dino spirit at least. Perhaps Dinosaur Train technology came from beyond the mysterious beyond, and explaining it would be telling.
I remember this show so well and something i will never forget is that I thought the t-Rex parents didn’t want their child and were gonna kill it…………I really don’t know why

Once you touch a time, it gets made cotemporal with you.
as a kid, i always assumed the time periods were not linear, but rather existing all at the same time. so the “present” in one period would align with the “present” in another. i thought of the time periods more as places rather than actual time in that sense. i don’t really have much evidence to support this since it was a while since i’ve watched it, but it’s mostly because when they would go to another period, it seemed like time resumed as normal there if that makes sense, so they were traveling more so to a place rather than a time
i think this was already brought up in the video but whatever enjoy my over-analysis anyways

You: “man, dinos and trains are so cool, too bad they can’t be combined”
Dinosaur Train:
Fun Fact: Stygimoloch may not have actually existed. A lot of studies have found that Stygimoloch was likely just a juvenile Pachycephalosaurus, but because of morphological change that comes with age, it was initially presumed they were different species because of variances between fossils. It’s a really good demonstration of how fast data on dinosaurs specifically can change, and probably why there’s so much dinosaur media for kids: someone’s gotta keep them updated lol
You just BLEW MY MIND!!! Gotta keep my dinosaur research up to date
True although the theory has been weakened since some stygi remains where found in older rock than draco or pachy reamains

Trains are inherently rad, so it doesn’t surprise me that a lot of autistic people like them
I was more of a dinosaur and bug gal
y'know what? you're right. trains ARE wonderful! i'm also autistic and definitely had a big train obsession when i was a kid. now that i'm older i've transitioned from trains to boats, which is kinda ironic because i'm actually afraid of the ocean and any kind of deep/open water.
I was the horse girl...

Trains are incredibly based, we should all love them.
The Troodons really said “All dinosaurs are equal, but some dinosaurs are more equal than others” 😅
Yeah just like the animal farms but dinosaur 😅
My guess with the tail is familiarity, like the way delivery robots make faces now. It's to simulate the emotions shown by dinos through their tails, making the train endearing.
also because its the only thing like it that most of them interact with at all, like we dont see them with any other sorts of technology, a trail would definitely freak most of them out at least at first

Same, he does seem to behave a bit differently than the other dinos although I had no idea what neurodivergent meant when I watched this show as a kid.
Is THAT why I liked him so much!?
Your rail enthusiasm is inspiring, Supreme Leader.

The way the characters move terrifies me
Oh- oh god how did I forget about sid the science kid? I remember dinosaur train but although sid did exist in some vague form in my head I couldn’t remember that show. And now I looked it up and the animation terrified me so yay
Potential explanation for the train having a tail: maybe it was used to maintain the balance of the train so it didn’t get derailed? With so many different dinosaurs of varying sizes on the train surely the weight distribution would get thrown off every now and again
I actually got to meet Dr. Scott at a museum event when I was a kid, Jr was so nice and cool in person
Same for me
Dinosaur Train slaps harder than the trauma this video reveals from my nostalgia.

Maybe the Troodons are people. Like humans put themselves in the bodies of Troodons or something. That’s why they live in houses, have technology, could’ve brought other dinosaurs back to life, ect.

Why am I imagining the whole show being a plot that is puppeted by mad scientists now?
So avatar with dinosaur bodies instead?

Either that, or they could be dinosauroids - basically what would happen if dinosaurs were around long enough to develop sapience
Or like panda caretakers, they are in suits to make careing for their charges easier on the animals?
I was always under the impression that the dinosaurs had a mutual understanding that they all needed to eat out of necessity, so hunting wasn't personal unless it was someone you knew. Glad I'm not the only one who thought the time-travel was weird though.
I’m not sure how much overlap there is between the Dinosaur Train and All Tomorrows fandoms but the Troodons being aware of so much of the history of life at 19:45 gives me those vibes.
Oh my god I love all tomorrow’s!
my intense all tomorrows hyperfixation is coming back thqnks to this comment 😅
I think that the reason why the passengers don’t just eat other or capture each other is two-fold:
1.They get to return to their time period to eat their (possibly less sentient) prey.

So many PBS kids shows go so hard and when the show ends, they make one of the most heart aching and satisfying endings in all of history.
I made a joke on Twitter that the world of Dinosaur train could honestly be a kid friendly version of possible prehistorical historical lore for the world of Beastars. Minus the time traveling junk obviously
But think about it. They both have anthropomorphized animals with human like intelligence
herbivores and other dinos don’t always feel comfortable with carnivore predators (with carnivores eating basically the rotting meat of other dinosaurs. I mean who knows they could’ve been eating a long lost friend and they didn’t even know it)
and even Beastars kinda went over the concept of dinosaurs within their world building and how it differs compared to the discovery of dinosaurs within our own world. Even if it is a bit wonky at times like Rex-mas lol
