    I think the main point of the coma seasons is that you feel like archer when he wakes up. You haven't seen this people or settings on years, just your mind's deformations of them. To me it works like that. It shows you how archer sees them and then it throws him back to reality completely disoriented.

      @@dice9270so it’s funny you say that as I’m actually binging the show from complete “scratch” and have been able to scale 2 seasons on my break… Yes, I feel it DOES work better as a continuous watch through. If I were watching this in real time with the breaks and finales, I feel I’d lose interest… I’m losing interest now honestly 😭

      @@whoozyyy the coma seasons felt fun to me but they weren't as funny as what came before them, they were almost purely pop culture references and undid much of the character development over the previous seasons. The seasons that followed the coma stuff started to improve on this, and season 13 felt like a proper return to form.

      @@memoryfoam2285 I feel the jokes aren’t nearly as dark or offensive as they used to be. It feels like they know they don’t want to be cancelled. I think that was the appeal to me, being dark and racist lol or elitist lol seems soft now. Archer doesn’t care much, they should have gotten Lana and Archer together since Malory is gone. It just seems so weird now, I think ever since Adam Reed stopped writing.

      @@whoozyyy the edgy humour has definitely taken a backseat but it's still got plenty of very intelligent jokes that point out things about the world around us. That's what always made archer interesting to me, the fact that it made you think and was full of interesting information and calling out bs power structures through humour.

    The episode were Archer keeps citing historical aliagator attacks from memory
    In order to justify his crippling phobia of aliagators. Whom otherwise has a almost unbelievable fearless nature to life threatening situations. So f ing dumb, but had me rolling laughing, not only through the entire episode, but has often popped up in my mind randomly years later and still makes me chuckle.

    Archer Vice may be the funniest season of any show ever, animated or not. Every episode is hilarious, the entire running gag of "phrasing" no longer being a thing is terrific. Pam on Coke, Kriegers boondoggle, great guest stars like Christian Slater, Lauren Cohan, Thomas Lennon among several others. Archer being confused for a messenger for Vognar and the case that may or may not have contained A human soul. OUTLAW COUNTRY WHOOOO!!!
    In fact, I think I may halt my Rick and Morty rewatch just to watch Archer Vice for like the 12th time.

    I really liked this video but i have to disagree what you say about seasons 8-10, I have rewatched them all several times and if anything they show what Archer thinks of each character but they still feel familiar to me. Season eight explored Archer going through his grief of the death of woodhouse and the relationship Archer feels he has with his mother. Season nine explores Pam's and Archers Frienship, and season 10 explores Lana and Archer. If I am missing anything important to my understanding let me know but i find these three seasons to be chaotic and funny

      I admit I have come to respect season 8 and 9. It was a bit of an adjustment, but I now really love season 8, and quite like 9. I swear that shepherds pie gag at the start of s10 is holding up the entire season though.

      While I do think they're great, I still watched 8-10 with a bitten tongue just waiting to return to the agency and just have everything go back to near normalcy to be blindsided in season 11 with Archer being tossed to the side for most missions and not being given time to breathe. Pre-Coma and Vice especially were good but I much rather prefer the Coma seasons be part of their movies or shorts or even have them shortened down to semi-seasons or episodes.
      Though season 8 I understand given the passing of the VA for Woodhouse. Though, it was my first time watching Archer, it was hard to sit through and binge as easily as the earlier seasons.

      I remember not thinking much of even seasons 5 and 6 when I first watched them, but after coming back to binge most of the show, I really came to appreciate how ambitious Archer is with it's overall storytelling - the show isn't named after Archer, it's literally just about him. All of it. I understand not liking the coma episodes as much, because I also am incredibly annoyed by cheap shit jokes, but once I clocked the tropical adventure pastiche as deliberately Flanderizing the other characters from Archer's perspective, even the "hurhur Pam fard" jokes started to grow on me as they began scanning more as metatextual jokes.

    One of my favorite shows ever and I resembled with you on the downfall of it all. It was evident when they hit the eff it button and didn’t revere back to the blue print of what made it so good.
    All this aside, I resembled most with your message at the end, being able to expire yourself into something you have so much conviction / passion about, and then taking pride in the fact after you complete it saying you created it. God I can't lie I was shocked this video isn't more popular! Brilliantly edited and analysed!! Although I would 100% recommend sticking with season 12. The will they/won't they of Archer and Lana is a little tiring at this point but I think it does a wonderful job of getting not just us, but Archer himself reacquainted with the other characters. The character arcs are beautifully done this season, especially Cyril, Archer and Lana! As someone who's just wholly obsessed with Archer - it's definitely a return to form (and maybe even one of my fave seasons!)

    The smaller scale/scope stuff is what kept me watching Archer for so long. There's so many shows and movies that I give up on because the stakes are so high that it can be stressful to watch, or just loses all realism and I feel detached from it. Archer did a surprisingly good job of balancing the huge consequence actions with minor everyday activities.
    I had the same thing as you when it came to the latest season of Archer. I gave it a try when it came to Netflix but I'd already struggled with the later seasons and I think I maybe made it through one episode but I can barely remember what happened in it. Same for most of the later series episode tbh. Feel like I'm much more likely to rewatch older series than I am to keep going with the new episodes.

      @NateGate  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I totally agree! I have thought a lot about this subject! I have never thought about it in terms of scale! but yeah that totally makes sense. people think bigger means better but it never really is, it's just louder! I may steal that for some future videos 😅😂

    • @BADCompanySarge
      @BADCompanySarge 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@NateGate Happy to give any advice I can. If there are any specific questions then ask away.
      As for me getting to the point I'm currently at, it's mostly been a case of trial and error and perseverance. I think I've made over 1000 videos/streams over the course of several years and I've made more mistakes than I have steps forward.
      When you mentioned at the end of the video about covering various different topics the first thing that jumped to mind was content variety and how that can sadly often hurt channels more often than it helps them. That's not to say you shouldn't try out that stuff, just keep in mind that it can often be a struggle to get views when there's a shift in what the channel is making.
      If certain things work out particularly well it can sometimes be worth considering making a secondary channel to focus on that specific type of content with more of a focus. The way to kind of look at it is "can I pitch my channel to somebody in a single sentence".
      If you can say "I make video essays deconstructing comedy series and movies" then great, people know what they're getting. But if it starts going to "I make videos talking about TV shows, sometimes films, I've covered a few books too and I was thinking about doing some music related stuff. It's mostly analysing it with a bit of comedy thrown in."
      The more succinctly you can describe your channel, the better it will likely be at growing an audience that comes back to videos time and time again.

    • @NateGate
      @NateGate  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@BADCompanySarge I see what you mean! Ironically it’s like you were saying,, bigger doesn’t always mean better! I’ve got to keep consistency so I can keep the same viewership coming back for more videos. Honestly, in the beginning of this video, I thought to myself "this dude doesnt know what he's talking about, Ive just watched season 13 episode 01 and it's just fantastic"
    Then towards the middle of the video I thought to myself "oh my God stop you're going to ruin my favourite show"
    Then towards the end, it became apparent how much work went into this video and this amount and time in editing and research is only put in when someone wants to express something he/she holds EXTREMELY close to him.
    I started this video, kicking, screaming and hating you, but now, at the end, I can only thank you and be glad that Ive watched the whole thing. You've dimensionally opened my perspective on TV analysis and used perfect examples (perfect to me) to bring clarity in what makes a show good and what deteriorates it.
    I'm also an avid Archer re-watcher, I really love the mash-up of that specific art style with the whole Espionage theme. I cant remember what the name of the show was (or any other details for that matter) but I'm VERY VERY sure that Ive watched an animated series back in the early 2000s (I was like 12) that had an uncanny representation of the same art style, but wasn't based on spies and covert missions, and seeing that style made me strongly crave a theme that fits that style.... Enter Archer and it had everything Ive ever wanted, Class, Charisma & Comedy.
    Anyway, I could ramble for paragraphs, but what I just really wanna say is THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU, I subbed and liked and will check out your other videos too.
    And if you need any help on the music side of things, don't hesitate to let me know. Just tell me what style youre looking for and how long the music needs to be, and then give me like 3 to 4 days, and I'll send you an instrumental track that you can use for free, for which you don't have to credit me for, unless you want to (it's my little token of gratitude for the amazing work put into this video).
    If you dont need music, then that's okay too 😊
    I hope this channel grows into the beautiful environment that you envision it to be and that it educates and enlightens (which might mean the same thing) many others, the way it did to me just now.
    God Bless You!

    Although this is an older video I wanted to comment. I love Archer and also feel that season 5 was the best. Someone further down in the comments pointed out that series had to reinvent itself due to the name ISIS. I actually liked the arc of Season 7, having Cyril (sort of) in charge was unique. I liked how the animation was layered and each layer had a slightly different style. Background, characters and the objects that they interact with. I loved your points and your presentation. It was well constructed and you sustained the manic (in a good way) energy for almost 70 minutes. Very entertaining.

  • @swag31556

    it was called isis cause no one knew who isis was until around when archer hit its 5th season (when archer abandoned "isis" as its spy agency name). Also andy Reed stopped writing new seasons after season 10 and the flashback seasons were to get his mind back to wanting to write it again( this obviously didnt work out). I've noticed that in the new season it's bad not so much because of what is being said (although it is much much worse than early seasons) but because of the timing in line delivery, ie how soon after soemthing is said that someone will say phrasing or what not. I think the worse part of these recent seasons tho (especially for pam) is the writers flanderizing the characters and making them completely predictable and boring. Also after season 7 the show moved from airing on Fx to airing on Fx's backup Fxx which shows alot of drop in confidence in the show by the network. They need to end the show before the majority of it becomes bad like what has already happened to shows like the simpsons and family guy.

    Bro no lie Archer as a whole is fucken great no matter the season & the fact the writers are willing to take risks with these zany plots is just great & don't even get me started on season 10 which took place in space or maybe it was season 9 don't remember but regardless this man couldn't be anymore wrong when it comes to the archer coma seasons. Also I loved the Veronica Dean episodes & how manipulative that lady turned out to be I mean this dude may of found that character & season boring but I thought it was truly fantastic great comedy all around much love & respect to all involved in this show y'all did freakin great no matter how much some people may shit on some of the seasons

    Upon rewatching after the first couple seasons, the biggest flaw became that they were actually good spies. The show needed to be about a group of keystone cops getting into a mess, but, BUT, still somehow via walking backwards into it, get the job done. Way to early, way to often they always failed the mission. But yes, also the potty humor got to common.

  • @sladeh9813
    @sladeh9813 2 ปีที่แล้ว +32

    I couldn’t disagree with you heavier about the 3 “spin off seasons” they’re the perfect chance to develop archer and to look into how his mindset effects the people around him. You get to learn what his dreams are, in all three you see a slightly different person in each of the main cast because that’s the different attributes archer applies to those people in real life. I think looking into the plot of those seasons, could give a lot to think about when it comes to how archer sees himself and the world around him. It preps you for how he will act, and how he must cope, with being disabled afterwards.

    New subscriber who showed up after searching "Archer Video Essay". Good job finding the secret words of the day!
    I'm with you on nearly everything up to about halfway in. I don't believe Archer's quality took a vertical journey. It was more horizontal. The age of serialization has come and with it the flanderization of mass media itself.
    Edit: Isn't Veronica Dean the same woman who shot Archer when he was a lacrosse player? Isn't Archer still in *that* coma, imagining his entire subsequent life as a spy? I thought that was a given. Boy, we are watching different shows.

    Not sure if anyone brought it up but the reason why it shifted after the spy theme is due to the agency name of isis and if connection to a real world terrorist group they had to change the name and pivoted the themes due to that and the way they pulled it off was extremely respectful to the real world situation of the time

Don’t ever forget that there is always more to learn though. You definitely have a lot of potential and with enough honing you could make a career out of this. By the by don’t worry about your friends and how much they care about the channel, I’m sure once you’re bigger you’ll appreciate the separation of them from content making. Ps in all honesty I loved pretty much all of archer but I’m no film critic, just don’t have the mind for it.

    Thanks for the video about one of my favorite shows! I agree that the show has definitely gotten slower, but it still has it its magic, just I suppose not as consistently. The first 2 out of office seasons are fantastic, but I agree that the space season is pretty rough except for the episode, I forget if it's second to last, or last, where they find the woman who it turns out convinced everyone on her ship to kill themselves. Doesn't justify the whole season, but it could have totally supported an arc.
    The current season is good is good to have around, but I, the show, and the whole damn world miss Mallory, although I think it's really classy the way they let her go.
    Now I have to go watch a video about COMMUNITY, not sure if it was made by you.

    A personal favourite of mine is the 'Free Wales Army' - as an English man, I was half expecting details to be wrong, but the Welsh pair being enraged, not by the real historical oppression of the Welsh people by England but instead citing a town that was flooded made me chuckle as the reactions of Archer going 'Oh my god, they drowned thousands of people' and then the increasingly confessed reduced scope of the incident ('well, no, they bought the homes at above market rate and most of the people life in nicer homes now' and '48' '48 thousand!?' 'No, 48') made me smile, especially when the FWA where like 'We're going to blow up a dam and flood a town. But it's only got English in it, not real people', it honestly feels like the Archer team either had some real British people on staff and/or spoke to real people from Wales and England. And whilst that sounds like a low bar, its one I frequently see US media not clearing when portraying Britain (which is 99% of the time London).

    The AV club, of all places, made a really good insight. Once Reed departed from writing in Season 10, several different writers began to helm the show, some of which were better than others. So Seasons 11-14 were not only vastly different from seasons 1-10, but each individual episode varied in quality depending on who wrote it. And if I've said it once, I've said it a billion times. But if Mark Ganek wrote EVERY episode of Season 11 onward, it would have been wonderful. If Alison Zeidman wrote EVERY episode Season 11 onward, it would have been wonderful. Every other writer, Mike Arnold, Brittany Miller, etc., just didn't really get what the show was about.
