For perspective: In Canada the Acura MDX Type S cost $88,000; the Genesis GV 80 3.5T 3-row costs $92,000; the Mazda CX90 PHEV GT (most expensive trim) costs $64,000. I’m impressed by Mazda’s performance, holding its own in much more expensive category.
A fair comparison would be the Telluride or Pilot, which are underpowered… but still great SUVs. CX90 hands down for me… Mazda’s strategy will pay off

Fair enough - nonetheless Mazda is doing something unique that I believe will sway many ‘luxury’ buyers. The drag is a confirmation for me… I don’t need it to be faster, I just need it to hold its own… for $24K less

In reality no customer takes a sub 400 hp SUV to a dragstrip to race. A transmission desgined for fuel efficiency, like in the Mazda, makes more sense for this type of vehicle than a transmission designed for the hardest launch possible. The Mazda is MUCH more fuel efficient than the other two here, huge difference in IRL fuel economy.

Hi Sam. Good three way comparison drag race video between the Acura MDX Type S, Genesis GV80 and the Mazdo CX-90. I knew the MDX Type S would have the advantage due to the fact that the weight is lighter than the other two vehicles. Also, quicker shifting by the transmission. Another thing could be is that the power that gets generated is achieved at lower RPMs.

Mazda is trying to compete in both the mainstream mid size suv segment and the luxury midsize segment with one car.
This particular cx90 is $60k. That's right into the middle of a fully loaded telluride sx pro prestige ($53k) and MDX type s ($67k).
So you do need to pay more to get closer to the luxury models but you can definitely see the difference why the MDX is some $7k more, and that's not only just the performance.

But the engineers have said that IF you are running Regular (and the engine adjusts its EEC for this fuel, resulting in 319hp/369tq), then it will take "up to 2 tanks of fuel" using Premium for the EEC (electronic engine control) to reset to the full 340hp/369tq. Mazda as a manufacturer checks a lot of boxes for me. Test drove the CX-90 yesterday, the interior is vastly impressive, the design itself and the practicallity of having physical buttons. The car also handles well, feels a lot smaller than its actual size.
That said, the new Inline 6 while has decent push from torque, doesn't have much character, felt a bit bland. For a 3-row family SUV, I think it's okay, it's a great balance of speed, handling, the interior just wins for me. And the fact the fully loaded Signature trim is $63,000 in Canada puts it very competitively in the segment.
Never got a chance to test drive the Acura, seems like no dealer ever have them in stock. Genesis on the other hand prcie themselves like a luxury Euro brand which they aren't. Advanced tech but they don't have the fundamentals. Both the GV70 and 80 felt disconncted on throttle, braking and steering inputs, not a cohesive experience.
Anyone looking for more power than these three probably needs to go the European route, but aside from that, CX-90 to me is the most well-rounded package, especially considering the cost.

@@randomvids2882 I agree with you on Hyundai/Kia having the leg up on their modern design and tech. But their fundamentals aren't there. Even as a 3-row SUV I want to it be relatively good to drive. I can see the practical appeal but the Palisade isn't for me, it's too soft and floaty. Their platform, where you don't see is not worth the money. With higher interest rate monthly payment comes out on par with the CX-90. It's all about preference.
The one vehicle I'd choose over any other competitor is the Ioniq 5, I think it's the best EV inside and out on the market for the money, it also fits Hyundai's uniquely forward design language perfectly.

The thing is that Mazda has never been about the raw power, so taking a Mazda to a drag race is like taking a fish out of water. Mazda has always been about the driving feel and driving dynamics. It’s steering feel and chassis tuning are better than most cars, and these reviewers fail to do a proper comparison to bring out where the CX90 truly shines - such as driving on windy roads and tracks. When CX90 was first released, there were a bunch of first drive reviewers taking it to the canyons, and they all said it drove better than most three rows.
