  • First time for Alexis to hear and react to Nothing but a good time by the glam metal band Poison. Burch also shares one of his photos of the lead singer Bret Michaels and the story behind the image. From the album, Open Up and Say Ahh! The height of glam metal and produced many bands but few were as good of live act or as musically talented as Poison.

I was a spectator at a "Bret Michaels Concert"' when I visited Michigan from Ontario crossing the border in 2015. I remember they didn't have CC because he was battling a difficult substance abuse issue. Slash & CC were the last 2 left in a competition to be Poison's lead guitarist. Slash went to Guns 'N Roses and CC went to Poison. My favourite songs are "Every Rose Has Its Thorn (1988) & I Won't Forget You (1986)

@subifyouareagainstantifaan3928 There are good artists out there still. TH-cam and other social media platforms have given this young generation a platform, independent of the greed from recording companies. They manage themselves, produce and distribute their music, physically [CDs] and digitally. I am a product of the greatest period of music - the mid 60's to the mid 70's. I am 66, my first concert was 12 days before my 13th birthday in March of 1970, Humble Pie opened for Grand Funk Railroad. Before the year was over. I'd seen Deep Purple, Jefferson Airplane, Mountain, The Grateful Dead, Ten Years After, Black Sabbath, and 10cc. To date I have 193 live shows under my belt. The last 3 being, young talented artist that have honed their craft. I only found them via TH-cam and reactions like this. Blackberry Smoke, Larkin Poe, and Home Free. There are others out their than need our attention, that are just as good and deserving. I call them the "underknown". Groups like The Rainbow Girls, Lukas Nelson and the Promise of the Real, Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats, Brother Dege, Marcus King, Billy Strings, Avi Kaplan, Ali Handal {a cancer survivor like myself that befriended my while I was going through my treatments with numerous emails of encouragement}, Mean Mary, and Chip Taylor & The New Ukrainians {while older, spent most of his life writing hits for others such as "Wild Thing", and dozens of others like "Angel of the Morning"}, just to name a few off the top of my head. My point is, while it's fun to hear blast from the past and see reactions from people that never heard some of these rock, blues, country and folk classics. Someone needs to be the voice for the new and upcoming artists that are still creating great music. One more new recording and touring artist I discovered a few years ago, and you might know his name from his "other job" is Kiefer Sutherland. Yes, that Kiefer, writes nearly all his own stuff too. If anyone wants more of these underknown artist I have found, just holler, be more than happy to share.

OMG I remember the 80s and how much fun music was. I graduated High School in 87 and when this song came out I was a big metal head. I had been playing guitar for a few years (classical and jazz) and had started studying music theory in college.
I was a bit ashamed at how much I liked this song. LOL It was such a simple basic song compared to other stuff I was listening to but you can't deny how catchy and fun the song is. I soon got over being ashamed of liking simple catchy pop/rock music. It doesn't have to be complex to be enjoyable.

Just saw them several months ago on the Stadium Tour (with Def Leppard, Motley Crue, and Joan Jett). They are still great live. Sound like they did back in the 80s. Poison has too many great songs to mention but Cry tough has an almost magical quality to the guitar sound and the Flesh and Blood album really needs to be heard in it's original entirety to truly be appreciated in my humble opinion.
Back in the 80's many people were first exposed to the music via radio, at least where I come from, and we didn't care what the people looked like as long as the music was good.

Warrant were one of the most underrated bands. I feel sorry for them that the Cherry Pie single defined them, because even the rest of that album (well most of it anyway) is just excellent melodic hard rock. '86-'87 was the real breaking point for video and sound quality in the 80s. Before '86 sound quality was quite different from artist to artist, and most videos still had that '70s bad sci fi budget'. 1987 was a 'massive' year in music and video quality..... and most amazing songs and videos that I remember from that era typically were around that year.

Poison! :D When I was in hospital (forever!), from a near-fatal motorcycle accident, I had a private room as I was in there so long, and I was allowed my tape player in there ... for weeks I had one tape and it had Poison on one side and Vixen on the other - listening to that over and over kept me sane as I could move my left arm to turn the tape over but other than that I was semi-suspended from the ceiling and couldn't move!
EDIT: On the speaking to the 'working stiff' comment, I always thought Poison were like the Glam Metal version of Blackfoot as they had the similar 'vibe' tho' they couldn't be more different in culture :D I can listen to this song and move straight on to, say, Dry County, without pause.

Saw them many times since they started touring. Sex, drugs and Rock N Roll.....it was truly "Nothin' But A Good Time". I still live the debauchery of the 80s. And nothing offered today can match the holding power of Aqua Net...in the pink can. And it's still available! Good times....great memories.

Nice Reaction, Poison has only been to my town once I think. 1989 for Open up and Say Ahh! Began listening to them when they first started getting played on MTV. So many good bands then.

Poison is one of the bands I will see every time they come to Dallas. So fun. Such a blast. Last time I saw them, they opened for Motley Crue... MOTLEY CRUE! First, let me say I deeply love Motley Crue, but Poison was way more energetic. I really don't think Bret stopped jumping their entire set. Just so much fun and when you see them live, for that time you just forget any stress you have and just have a good freaking time.

So funny you mentioned Aqua Net!! I was in a hair band back in the day, too. We evolved into a funk metal band (I was a former funk bassist, so we started incorporating my style into the music, along with the drummer) We got signed to Warner, and promptly shelved as Nirvana came out. But anyway, she mentioned "didn't they suffocate using all that hair spray?" and it made me laugh out loud cause when we started out, our dressing rooms would have a huge, thick cloud hanging from about 6' to the ceiling from all of us going through straight can after can of Aqua Net. It would get pretty bad sometimes depending on the size of the dressing rooms we were in. We opened up for Poison twice when they were up and coming - once in Washington, D.C., and once in Painters Mill, MD. We were right on their heels as we were gaining in popularity. They were all such great guys, and we always had the best times together. I wouldn't wanna go back to livng that lifestyle anymore now, but I'm so thankful that I got to live it out when I was young.

Hi Burch, I really like your videos, I'm from Mexico, 7 years ago I discovered Hair Metal bands, in my opinion the pinnacle of Rock!! For me it was a rebirth since I had many years since music was not in my life, I really like your videos because you talk about your experiences and how your life was with this music, you are a great person, very decent, your videos make me feel like you are a friend and listening to your anecdotes is something very cool since I don't know to anyone who lived through that time, one day I would love to go to the US to see a concert by a hair metal/glam/hard rock band! regards!!

I had met Bun E. Carlos before, but this was the 1st band I ever met. I didn't even have a ticket to the show but through the strip club I worked at, I got invited down to a meet n greet before the show around sound check time. This was the early 90s when that wasn't really a thing yet. They were cool. Just a few years ago I was talking to a guy who does Bret's security. Bret had just recently done a tour. He said that after one show they all went through a couple cases of beer and almost 2 bricks of cocaine. He said Bret was keeping the 80s alive. I have no idea if that's true or not but it made me laugh.

Poison was my son's first concert at 10. They opened for David Lee Roth (solo) and 2 songs in people were leaving Roth's show. Poison had blown the crowd away and DLR couldn't hold onto the energy. From '85 to '91 we saw them 5 times.
You know you have to do "Something to Believe In," especially the alternate lyric version.
