Just saw 38 Special in a small venue in Philly..sounded and looked great ..age means nothing where excellent talent is concerned..Mr. Carlisi..please come back to the group..they obviously have great guitarists ..but would be even better if you could see your way to come back..I say this as a 40 year fan..Many fans are out here that would so appreciate !!
My favorite guitarist ever! This man inspired me to learn the guitar which in turn gave me a career in music which has lasted over 30 years now. Thanks Jeff. Also I was once fortunate enough to hold that Explorer of his. Can you imagine getting to hold your idols guitar? He's probably unaware of this but it did happen....lol
ARS were about to hit the stage and Barry Bailey's guitar tech was setting up so. I asked him what year was the LP Goldtop Deluxe, he called back to Barry and got that it's actually a 1968 1/2. During the last tour with Ronnie Hammond on vocals, the band was at dinner and told the stagehand selling merch I really wanted to see the Goldtop. Lo and behold, he goes and gets a guitar case and hands me THE Deluxe. Not wanting to drop it, I got down on one knee and played it unplugged. It was like butter !
What a great interview. Well done. Jeff Carlisi is so great. Hall of Famer...Smooth articulate, melodic player that is also a good storyteller and all around nice guy.
Love listening to Jeff talk. He's the real deal, what you see is what you get. And wrote some of the most melodic solos I've ever heard. God bless you, Jeff. Miss hearing you play.
@@Meatball3800 Love you, Jeff! You're the reason I FINALLY learned Hold on Loosely! Your guitar lesson on that kicked me off and I took it from there. After a few decades i can finally play it note-for-note. But, in all seriousness, with all of the guitar solos out there, you ALWAYS had an emotional melody behind yours, much like Boston. You weren't just jamming on a minor pentatonic but playing a melody that grabbed heartstrings. Thank you for that. Those are the things that matter. Oh, and Erik Lundgren played a Melody Maker and he's another favorite of mine. God Bless!
So glad that I came across this interview. I enjoyed it a lot. Big 38 Special fan. I live 45 miles from the Lynyrd Skynyrd Memorial. Paid a visit 2 weeks ago. Thank you for a very entertaining conversation. Thank you Jeff for the years. ❤️ ROCK ON!!!
I’ve been a huge .38 Special and Skynyrd fan since I was a kid and I’m not ashamed to say that I’ve stolen my fair share of Jeff Carlisi/Allen Collins and Gary Rossington licks. Just a phenomenal player with an amazing sense of Melody!
That “different direction” is what made 38 special!!! Mr Carlisli is an awesome guitar player, seems like a really intelligent, articulate and honest person. Obviously a hard worker and deserves all the respect he receives and more Imo. Congrats on a life well lived and know that you’ve had influence on so many other lives including mine, thank you!
I was SO excited to see a recent interview with Jeff Carlisi! He (and Don Barnes) are on my top list of guitar heroes (right there with Clapton and Harrison). His is a criminally underrated player and writer. Loved both of you guys geeking over the Delta Blues amp, too. Outstanding job and thank you so much. Thankful to have found the channel!
@@Meatball3800 jeff I covered robin hood after a month repeats. The thing is those riffs and skin on the pick. Opened up a ton of other music. As a bass player in a gospel group. Its hard to explore. So I bought a les paul. And enjoying music again. Anyone can amp up the gain. You my friend made the music. Thank Jeff. Its 10pm here in the mid west. Im going into my music cave and try to finish some lyrics. Blessings.
@@steveburns2178 Steve, that’s what it’s all about. Taking the blinders off and opening up the ears. Check out my friend Doyle Dykes when you get a chance. I believe he also did an interview with Craig.
The outro riff on "fantasy girl" is CLASSIC Carlisi power. Unforgettable music that will live forever. .38 Special was a very bright color in the tapestry of my youth. Thanks Jeff. American music and the signature sound of rock & roll in the 80's is forever linked to you. Kudos and admiration from an entire generation of .38 Special fans.
KB, The greatest thing about Music is that it does last forever. A bright color in the tapestry of your youth is one of the most descriptive and poetic sentiments I’ve ever heard as it relates to music. And yes, the outro solo to Fantasy Girl is one that I’m very proud of. Thanks for your comments and keep rocking my friend!
@@Meatball3800 I am deeply honored that you replied to my comment. My admiration of great music goes way back, but .38 Special has always been my favorite. Interesting story to tell about my appreciation of your contribution to a monumental moment of my life. I met a stunning young lady in 1989 by the name of Nannette. It was one of those moments in life that will live in my memory until my last breath. To make a long story short, I knew from the moment I laid eyes on her, I was determined to win and know her heart. After pursuing her for what seemed like an eternity, she agreed to a date. I had to make a good first impression, so I did what I thought was my best move. I put together a mix tape. We were having a completely awesome first date, when I suggested we listen to some music. The first two songs on the tape, Fantasy Girl and Like No Other Night. No lie Jeff. Needless to say, our first date lasted 32 beautiful years. In retrospect, it was the best move I ever made. I lived a charmed life for those 32 years thanks to those 2 songs. My daughter Nicole and I lost our beautiful Angel on July 31st of this year due to cancer. Her passing irreparably changed our life forever. Here's the catch Jeff, her appreciation of .38 Special's music was equal to mine from that first date. She also loved your guitar work on every single song. As she was passing, we were playing music for her. In the moment that I played Fantasy Girl for her, she smiled and left this world peacefully. I guess the song had a bigger impact on her than I originally thought. It helped win her warm and loving heart, and allowed me to live a life full of love and wonder. I was a lucky man. I wanted to share this with you for many reasons Jeff, but mostly to truthfully let you know the impact and meaning your music had in both of our lives. I listen to .38's music now and it brings me comfort in the memories of my wife associated to almost every song. I once again offer kudos for your contribution to not only unforgettable music, but more importantly to the memories of my beloved Nannette. Thank you Jeff. Wonderful experience for me to have had the opportunity to converse with you and I am honored to have had this opportunity to briefly share our story. Music not only originates in the heart, it lives forever in the heart. Peace and prosperity to you good sir. God bless.
His contribution to the Band with his incredible guitar playing on "4 Walls of Rayford" was well, legendary in my humble opinion - Mr Carlisi's legacy with 38 Special is Hall of Fame caliber - Hopefully 38 Special will receive their due while the members can enjoy the deserved Honor
Couldn't agree more....... Jeff is part of southern rock royalty. Aside from his .38 special history he was a friend of RVZ and contributed to skynyrd as well. He could have been a skynyrd guitar slinger. Heck the man himself even commented on your post!! ^^^^^^^^^
I love this guy. One of my favorite guitar players from my time in the 80s. He is a beast on guitar. Would love to meet him. He seems like someone you could just hang and chill with.
My latest obsession with the late GREAT Benjamin Orr brings me here. How I missed Mr. Orr back in the day...I will never know. These stories are so important to record for history sake...as we lose the greats all to quickly now. Great interviewer! Great guest ... .38 special fan still.
Man I just discovered this interview with Jeff Carlisi I am 3/4 of the way through it and I just had to subscribe Jeff is the ultimate professional his guitar playing is just beyond words I can’t wait to finish the rest of this thank you for posting
Awesome interview!!! Great questions & Great answers....38 Special & Skynyard music 4-Ever ofcourse...got to see Skynyard 3 times before the crash...but never got to see .38!!! ❤ loved the whole interview!!!
@jeffcarlisi, if you ever get a chance to watch a cover of Hold on loosely... the Lexington lab Band does one heck of a cover. Your parts are difficult because you have your own “flavor’. You have always been a favorite player to me. I have said that a guitarist that becomes one with the music, you can tell who hits what I call “wrestling the demon”. You’re awesome brother! Thanks for your contributions to music and for all of the memories from 80’s cruising the strip, radio blasting, and some girls standing up through the t-tops. Every time I hear the first bar of your songs, it sure brings me back to a happy time in my life. Thanks again... keep rocking into the night!
I slept outside at the New Haven Colosseum in New Haven, Ct. to get tickets for Skynyrd . Got the tickets, went home and later that day I heard the news about the crash. They were at that time and still are in my opinion one of the best bands ever. Such a loss to our world.
Got an autograph from Jeff once after a concert in Cleveland. I got backstage when I wasn’t suppose to be but Jeff was kind enough to grant me his signature before I was kicked out. Still have the autograph.
Intelligent, candid, humble discussion with one of my heroes. So great to see him meticulously dissect that iconic guitar. Even greater to learn that he is as much of a fan as the rest of us, and remains unaffected by his fame and legacy. Thanks for a great few hours!
Thanks for letting us get to 'hang out' for an afternoon with Jeff! What a sincere, cool guy! I was probably 8 or 10 years old when I first heard 38 and his playing really got me started on the guitar :) Funny enough, I never rushed to learn anything much he did because I always knew it was the way he played it and the ability to work that into the context of that song/band dynamics that really made it special. That's the mark of a true artist - you just stand back and appreciate it.
@@EveryoneLovesGuitar Jeff & I live like 10 miles from each other so maybe we will end up connecting. I took lessons this year from Danny Chauncey. You should contact Danny to do a video! Let me know if you need his info
Good to see Jeff ! Got to jam with him a few times.... miss Camp Jam with Jeff, Lib, and Ricky, and all the others ! Jeff is a very humble and cool guy to hang out with.
One of my guitar hero's. Very underrated and as you can tell...just a humble everyday guy that has written and played AMAZING music. If you'd pass him on the street you'd never know he was/is such a great musician. Saw them in concert a couple of times back in their heyday. Not even sure he realizes how highly he is respected.
I can’t believe I’m just seeing this interview! Jeff has always been my favorite. I could listen to him all day. He’s seen so much of the history of southern rock and rock music in general. Years ago I was so excited when .38 Special was playing our local fairgrounds. I never got the opportunity to see them when they played big venues. I was disappointed when I went to the show and Jeff was no longer with them. I understand that he did what was best for him and I can’t fault him for that. I got to see Don Barnes and Donnie Van Zant before Donnie retired from touring. Jeff is one of the often overlooked, highly underrated, and criminally under appreciated guitarist of all time. I grew up listening to Skynyrd and .38 Special. They were the soundtrack to my childhood and teenage years in the 70s and 80s growing up in SC. I still listen to them often. Thank you Mr. Carlisi for everything you’ve contributed to music and beyond. You seriously need to write a book with all your stories.
What a great interview! Thoroughly enjoyed this. Jeff has always been one of my favourite rock players. Delighted he gave a name check to the criminally underrated Barry Bailey. Watched this in four separate sessions - excellent, thank you Craig!!
HI Craig, that is with out a doubt the best interview I ever seen or enjoyed, being such a huge 38,Jeff Carlisi fan ,such a humble guy with so many amazing stories.Stay healthy and safe,Loved ever minute of it,I grew up listening to his incredible timeless music! Thank you.I🇧🇸🏚

Love the "props" to the most underrated rock guitarist of all time (Barry Bailey) from another sadly underrated super guitarist (Jeff Carlisi). Two of the reasons I play a Les Paul Deluxe to this day. Thanks for the memories guys and thanks for the great music. LOVE THE SHOW, CRAIG!
Joel, Barry is the reason I bought a deluxe as well. Sadly we’ve lost Barry recently. He was truly one of the greatest to ever touch six strings! Thanks!
@@Meatball3800 Thanks for the reply. When I heard about Barry's passing, I was very sad. But, the next day I put on the "Are You Ready" live album and just let Barry's tone take me back to my teen years and I realized that he is not suffering with that disease anymore. And that can't be bad for him. And I still have all that music. My son works at the Gibson factory in Nashville, TN and when I texted him about Barry's passing he promised that when the next LP Deluxe came across his bench he would play "Spooky" on his phone and put some extra love in that guitar for the next Barry Bailey disciple. ROCK ON, BARRY!
Am 59 this August, been to a lot of live concerts, out of all of them some where pretty darn good, but none where as good vas 38 Special. To be honest that was the best interview I ever watched he is such a humble man and musician. Thankyou so much agian for putting all this together, stay bsafe and healthy.. Cheers!
This was awesome. .38 was the first band I ever saw live in concert. Hollywood Sportatorium. They opened for Molly Hatchet and The Outlaws. Right when Rockin into the Night was coming out. I was 14.
Hollywood sportatorium, like being in a tin can(and we loved every minute of it! Great interview, I'm a new subscriber and 38 special allways one of my fav's! So tight, I still play their albums at least once a month , still dig it!
Oh my!!! Hatchet, Outlaws and .38 at 14 years of age as first concert!!! What a show and memories!! What an awesome amount of talent in one show!! What a show to have captured on video disc!! Flaming hot!!
I'm a huge Skynyrd/38 fan...somewhere around 1980,I won a contest on a Long Island radio station (I THINK it was WLIR)...the prize was tickets to see 38 at The Pallidium in NYC and then hang with them in the lobby and drink free beer (those were the days!)...Jeff is so humble for such a talented and successful musician...loved the history, the stories, and those guitars (that iconic Explorer 😛)...I got more enjoyment out of this than any interview I've seen before...God bless!

Great interview!! I actually worked with a local band in Connecticut when .38 Special was starting to become known. First time I saw and listened to them closely was at Toad's Place in New Haven, CT. The band I worked with opened a few times for other up and coming bands at Toads Place. Around 1975-1976, I was asked to fill in for the sound guy at Todd's Place by their management as he was ill. I accepted that gig and was completely surprised to find that the headliner was .38 Special, and I loved it.
I grew up in the sixties too and MUSIC became such a most important and intensely influential effect in my life...still does! Thank you so much Mr. Jeff Carlisi, for sharing your most interesting, amazing musical story!!!! Am very grateful!!!! You are a fantastic musician and educator!!!! Lead on!!!!
Ok, that's freaking weird... 59:20 .. the first two songs I learned to play on the guitar were; Just what I Needed by The Cars and Hang on Loosely by 38 Special ,,, mind... blown

Ronnie was no angel to be sure, he was a real booger sometimes.. but if he was your friend you had a friend. I know some people who had known him before the crash.
@@hotwheel6663 My friends say he was cantankerous and loved to rile people up now and then and let things play out. I could be wrong or remember what I was told wrong. But, all in all.. I would have been able to get along with him, I was cut from the same kind of cloth. I was wild as hell back in those days.
Have been a big Carlisi fan since the .38 Special early days! Jeff’s a worldclass composer of phenomenal guitar licks and a master with the instrument. Those guys together put out some of the best rock and roll hits of the century! I Love the music of .38 Special and the guitarwork of Carlisi was such a big part of their sound and show! His guitarwork paired up with the awesome signature vocals of Don Barnes was a match made in Rock Heaven!
This is one of the best interviews I’ve ever watched. Nearly four hours long and yet I wish it was longer. I’ve always loved Jeff’s guitar playing but this goes so deep into his journey…the stories are just amazing. So candid, entertaining, intelligent and engaging.
Craig , this is one of my favorite interviews you've done- i've watched it many times and you do an awesome job in how you interview, the questions you ask and how you ask them as well as giving the artist plenty of space for detailed answers and explanations. awesome job as always brother! i truly, truly love Jeff Carlisi as a musician and awesome guitar player! he's one of the more rare players that has his own sound and tone and most importantly always plays/played for the song. Rockin' Into The Night is the track that introduced me to the band as a young pre-teen kid getting into music and having my own little bit of money to start buying and building my music collection and at 54yo i still have several of my 38 vinyl albums as well as on cd and cassette formats. i can't count how many times i've seen 38 special over the years when they rolled through Indiana, truly one of the great classic rock bands and i hope to meet the man someday. another awesome interview Craig!! \m/ \m/

Hey Mr. Smith, we can ALWAYS use a message such as today's video. Thanks for caring enough to post content such as this. Hope the healing of your arm continues sir.
I don't understand running out of fuel either Jeff! As a pilot myself, I have put myself (through thought) in that situation many times, and the only thing I can attribute the accident to, is "get-there-itis". It's a phenomenon in aviation, that has sadly taken many many lives!! Love your style and AWESOME playing Jeff. Huge, Huge fan since the very late 1970's, and still am today. Thanks for the music, and the memories!!!!
There is a new movie Atticus Pyle produced that shows exactly how they ran out of fuel. Though it paints Artimus as a Superhero and is not 100%acccurate they got the details of the crash right as far as how it transpired. Basically the rookie co-pilot accidentally dumped the fuel while trying to raise the landing gear back up. Great interview subscribed with notifications look forward to more!

Wow what a great day I had listening to all the stories this man has lived. If your a guitar player it’s a must listen. Get your favorite drink some food and sit back and enjoy. 🎸
The whole interview pretty amazing. I'm pretty blown away by the Ronnie Van Zant friendship. Basically if Jeff had not finished college he would have never become a rock star?! That goes to show you timing is everything. Speaking of which I had no idea Ben Orr spent his last year alive with a supergroup I never knew about with all A-list legends. That group played in South Florida only a couple months after I moved back.
Loved his guitar solos growing up, didn't know much about the band but when those songs came on the radio, the solos took them to a higher place. Extremely melodic yet powerful. Surprised he used a Les Paul Deluxe with the mini pickusp, those guitars have a very unique sound. The guys in Thin Lizzy liked them too.
In 1983 i was a young, 13 yo guitarist playing for a little over a year and I was always glued to MTV and I remember this dude's videos being a highlight of my day whenever they came on. Even back then I could tell he was totally unique and all of his solos were very well constructed, but flashy too. Plus the explorer was badass.
Virtually all, if not all of his solos were played on his LP Deluxe with the mini-hums. He told me this when I was randomly asking about that guitar. Of course now I want one, haha... thanks for listening man, glad you enjoyed this!
@@EveryoneLovesGuitar wow, no kidding. Well he sure knew what would look cooler to 13 year olds in 1983! Haha. And don't mention it, thanks for all you do to keep great guitar music alive and well. Subbed, buddy.👍

I hate change! A friend of mine walked up to me one day and says ' ROLLIN, you know, the only thing that doesn't change? Me: what's that Les? He says that everything changes. He had just heard the song, Time marches on by Tracy Lawerence. And then he walked away. It left me, like damn. I hate change. But as these two guys said, if you don't learn to adjust to it,you are going to be in for magnified disappointments. I really enjoyed this interview with Jeff Carlisi. He's a living legend.

Right on Kyle, thanks for listening! 🎸💥🙌🏻
We all steal our licks from our influencers. Just like they did. Evolution of Rock lol
Everyone stills licks, being able to play them correctly is an entirely different ball game

My admiration of great music goes way back, but
.38 Special has always been my favorite.
God bless.
Friends for life! Thanks for sharing such a candid and heartfelt story of your life
I love the outro on “If I had been the one” No flash, just a great rhythmic riff that played to the song. Genius!!!

Couldn't agree more....... Jeff is part of southern rock royalty. Aside from his .38 special history he was a friend of RVZ and contributed to skynyrd as well. He could have been a skynyrd guitar slinger. Heck the man himself even commented on your post!! ^^^^^^^^^

This interview with Jeff validates what I thought about lynyrd skynrd back when I was a kid , that they may have been the best..talented.. band ever.
I slept outside at the New Haven Colosseum in New Haven, Ct. to get tickets for Skynyrd . Got the tickets, went home and later that day I heard the news about the crash. They were at that time and still are in my opinion one of the best bands ever. Such a loss to our world.
Definetely the most original and didn't get sewed dozens of times like Zeplin.
@@woodrowcall3269 My step father and a few of his buddies had tickets for Cobo Hall in Detroit for that tour.

A local station has been playing If I’d Been The One routinely man what a great song to hear again and others as well. I can’t believe the song was completed in 20 minutes. Thank you for this interview I love the stories
Thanks for listening!
Wow, this is great! I have seen them many times. They were fantastic live. Thanks for the interveiw.
Awesome interview
I've always appreciated Jeff Carlisi's playing. His solos were melodic with some growl in them too. Always fit the song perfect!!!! An underated guitarist is an understatement to me. Jeff is a phenomenal player, & has always been an influence on my playing. Listen to "Chain Lightning". Enough said!!! From a 56 yr old picker in Okeechobee Florida!!!! Thanks for the great playing over the years!!!!😁😎👍🎸🎵🎶❤️
Very cool, thanks for sharing that, Douglas Holden, Jr. 🙌🏻💥🎉 subscribe: elg.fun/subscribe
@@EveryoneLovesGuitar Thanks for the interview and reply, brother. Get Barry Bailey from Atlanta Rhythm Section on the show. Another monster guitarist!!!😁😎👍🎸🎵🎶❤️💯
For me, without Jeff 38 Special would have been a lackluster band for me. Jeff was the energy, and the force behind this band. I was drawn to this band because of Jeff's guitar-playing and singing. I'm a huge Carlisi fan!
Yes, I agree @jadegreenjade - thanks for listening 💥 🎶 🎸 !
In th future this interview will be called a GEM and for the ages.
Thanks man !
Glad you enjoyed the interview @dnantis, and thanks for listening 💥 🎶 🎸 !
Am a huge 38 special fan, Without Dennis, there would be no 38 special sound. the best interview i ever heard so much info and stories. Thankyou!!
I couldn’t find your name or hear it to thank you for the interview. And thanks to Carlisi also. It was great fun as always hearing these stories about the people and music I’ve listened to my whole life!👍
Thanks for your kind words Steve Lankford and glad you enjoyed this 👍🏻🎸♫ subscribe: elg.fun/subscribe
I started watching this interview and thought I have other stuff I gotta get done. But after watching the whole 3:46 mins I glade I didn’t turn it off. Wow what a great day I had listening to all the stories this man has lived. If your a guitar player it’s a must listen. Get your favorite drink some food and sit back and enjoy. 🎸
Cowboy, thanks for your kind words and glad you enjoyed this 👍🏻🎸♫
The whole interview pretty amazing.
For sure! Timing everything
Glad you enjoyed the interview @rrdream2400, and thanks for listening 💥 🎶 🎸 ! I was surprised about the Deluxe as well...
One of the most inspiring and insightful interviews I’ve ever seen .always been a fan and this was an awesome 4 hours of my life
Thanks for your kind words @jamesrexsannatracy8318 and glad you enjoyed this 👍🏻🎸♫
In 1983 i was a young, 13 yo guitarist playing for a little over a year and I was always glued to MTV and I remember this dude's videos being a highlight of my day whenever they came on.
@@cmberrian Thanks man!

Saw them in Atlanta around 77. What a guitar player. One of the best.
Jeff Carlisi along with Ed King the best of the SKYNYRD SCHOOL of guitars ....... CIAO JEFF FROM MILAN ITALY !
Thank you for listening Billy Rowland! 🎉🔥😇 subscribe: elg.fun/subscribe
I saw 38 Special with Blue Oyster Cult, and Head East, in Houston, late 70s or so, I was 11 years old.
They all sounded great.
Wow, that's a show!
Dimarzio owns the “Double Cream” patent. Aside from that Jeff is a killer player and has left many of us with tons of joy through his music with .38. We’ve actually crossed paths a few times with mutual friends and he’s a great guy. God Bless him.
If the rest of you haven't heard Jeff KILL IT On his solo, ROBIN HOOD!! Get him to play it!!
I just saw 38 special in Sarasota FL. They were great.
