One thing I think people forget about the 70’s and 80’s..We had the luxury of time to absorb things.There was no internet so we didn’t have a barrage of instant media. You heard a song on the radio and you might have to save up money and then actually go to a record store to buy physical media….It was just a different way of life.
Wasn't a party in the late 80s till someone threw some Poison on. I met so many girls at Poison and Ratt concerts back in the 80s. The 80s were just one big party you guys missed it and I would back in a heartbeat to relive it. Poison concert still rock even today they still tour from time to time and sell out.
Poison was such a great live show. I saw them with Warrant in Dallas 1990. Their "cosmetically inclined" appearance, and of that whole genre, came from bands like New York Dolls, Alice Cooper, KISS... I'm sure there are many more.
At the time they came out, just having a catchy song wasn't enough. MTV ruled. So ya had to have a look also. So they did the extreme in one direction where WASP went the opposite. Poison were talented, but I'd venture to say warrant was above them at least in songwriting. Jani is an unsung hero for his musicality. Just too many personal issues stopped him.
Just to speak to their liveliness, when we went to Motley Crues stadium tour, with Joan Jett, Poison, Def Leppard, and Crue, Poison came out hard and got everyone on their feet. Truly energized the whole stadium

I lived in LA during this era, it was really, really fun. You go to clubs or small dive bars/clubs & see all these rockers out. I'd see David Lee Roth, Steven Tyler, Slash & a bunch of hair band guys...so fun!! The hair metal bands were actually made up of many really great musicians. CC Deville is known as a great guitarist. Many great musicians and vocalists from that era, even if you don't like the style of music. The best thing about the 80s, we had a huge variety of great music and thanks to MTV/radio, we heard a wide range of it.
I also live, born and raised, in LA next to LAX airport and Venice Beach, graduated high school in 1983. Seennso many shows, all the clubs, The Strip, I worked doing concert lighting and DJ/ security at a topless bar for 4 years, friends are musicians in bands you know well. So much fun, so many women, lots of booze and drugs. Beach during the day if you could wake up during daytime and then nighttime was the rightime, Gazzaris, Whiskey, Troubador, Roxy, Rainbow Bar and Grill, Bordners, Cat and Fiddle, and lots of underground and after hours clubs, now called Raves.

We used to go to Bordello on Santa Monica Blvd, only open on Thurdays, & see GnR guys, DLR, Steven Tyler etc. My friend & I stranded at Billy Idol/The Cult concert at the Forum, some guys offered us a ride into town..turns out they had a limo and were members of Faster Pussy Cat & LA Guns, lol. They were going to Cathouse so we went, too. Crazy times. You can't beat LA in the 80s, that's for sure.

There were so many clubs like Bordello where promoters like Brent Bolthouse and others would rent out a restaurant after they closed at 10 or 11 and then at midnight they would reopen as a club like Impala, and then the Variety Arts Building across from MacArthur Park on Park Dr. They had AA then changed the name to Alcohol Salad, and they had theme nights like Cereal Night and there would be pyramids of cereal boxes and then a guy on a road bicycle on a stationary treadmill and he was nonstop riding his ass off with Wheaties logos projected behind him. There was China Club, Myrons Ballroom which was Vertigo, and my friend DJd at those clubs and then he DJd a place called Boys and Girls on Highland just South of Santa Monica in a basement of an old office building and they opened at 2am and had my friend as dJ and they sold drink chips and you used the chips to buy blue stripe cans of beer or a cup of the vodka and kool aid they mixed in a sparkletts bottle. They stayed open til 6am then we'd go to Hollywood Billiards on Hollywood and Western which would stay open 24 hours as long as someone was playing pool on at least two tables. My best friend and roommate and I would be out 5 or 6 nights a week with a different club each night and always could rely on going to the Rainbow. We were making money selling coke to all the djs bartenders, club owners, doormen, so we rarely waited in line, always got a table, could go to the DJ booth or the office to party. That went on for years. We almost always brought girls with us that were friends to help get into the "new" clubs because the doorman would always let the cute girls in first and ours would get let in and they would grab us and say we were with them and we would get in. We'd start our night at one of 2 or 3 bars by our apartment in Marina Del Rey, have some drinks do some drugs with the waitresses sell some to the bartenders and then drive to Hollywood and wherever we were going that night. Sometimes we'd get home at 5 or 6 am and go surfing if there was waves or make a quick drive to Mt baldy and ski if there was snow. We were nuts. LOL
@@13_13k You're bringing out all the names! Yes, I remember China Club, Central, Vertigo, Scream and Hollywood Billiards, had forgotten about that one. It was definitely a huge playground back then. I remember going to Sushi on Sunset & seeing a couple of the Jackson family who thought my boyfriend was one of the MIlli Vanilli guys, haha. Saw lots of celebs there, too. I used to work at Formosa Cafe on Santa Monica & La Brea so I saw tons of celebs before, during and after they were at their peak. It was cool because it was an old Hollywood dive restaurant/bar w/no papparazzi, famous people weren't bothered so everyone just acted normal. I acted like I didn't know who they were, usually, lol. So much fun, I never knew who would come in from night to night. Some were super cool, some not so much, lol.
Nick back in the hair metal days most of the guitar players were using rack mounted effects units and alot of people had that sound. And Ryans right , people can say what they want about 80's hair metal bands but the shows were a blast and everybody had a great time.
Remember, all the hair band guys grew up listening to classic rock, idolized Jimi Hendrix, Clapton, Eddie Van Halen, loved the Beatles, Rolling Stones, the Who, Black Sabbath, KISS, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Jeff Beck etc...They're blues based like all rockers, but they evolved with the times, added in different synth sounds & brought in the general 'good times' feel and energy of the 80s.

We went from a era of excess and glam and partying and gorgeous babes dancing on cars to a era of dirty grimy tattooed up heroin chicks and darkly depressing bands and rock. I cant think of a scenario when both would have thrived equally in the culture cosmos.
A lot of those grunge bands evolved big-time. Stone Temple Pilots in 2010, did a VERY glam song " cinammon" or " first kiss on mars" from the same album
Steel Panther is a current band that does hair glam metal, albeit somewhat of a parody of the genre. When this song first came out back in the day, I thought it was cliched and cheesy, but it has grown on me over the decades. C.C. Deville is a guitar god.

Saw them in 1988 when they toured with David Lee Roth. Awesome show, miss those concerts when lighters where held to show love. Now smartphones have replaced lighters and people seem more interested in documenting the event than being in the moment.
I've seen these guys live quite a few times, they're just to good and fun live. The intro of the dishwasher listening to Kiss, that was actually Poisons cover of Rock n Roll All night. As for "glam" metal crashed and isn't around anymore....Wrong. Whenever Poison does go on tour they're packing it in, in arena's and outdoor pavilions. Last summer they were part of the "stadium Tour" basically opening for Motley Crue and Def Leppard and all the reviews said Poison was the best band of the tour. And they were. And a lot of these bands have inspired a new wave of "hair metal" there's quite a few bands out there doing pretty good that have followed. And CC was known in video's to highlight a lot of different guitars.
The woman I went to the show with stayed in line for water when we thought Poison was coming back on, because she didn’t care if she missed them. She said afterwards that she was glad she didn’t, because they were really good live.
I have a little more appreciation for this music now, but at the time I was a Zeppelin, Sabbath and Floyd fan, and was very pleased when bands like Nirvana drove a stake through the heart of the glam band craze.
What also hurt the musical credibility of the "glam" bands was that "Guns 'N Roses" and "The Cult" were around at the same time, putting out music that kept rock music going. While many are well aware of the large "GNR" catalogue, check out "She Sells Sanctuary" and "Fire Woman," among others by "The Cult." Ian Astbury, the lead singer, kind of had a bohemian/not fully glam and not committed to it/pre-"Jack Sparrow" Johnny Depp look about him during the band's heyday. However, he could belt out rock music. He was also so well respected that "The Cult" performed on a significant The Doors tribute album in 2000 and Astbury actually was the lead singer for a version of The Doors involving 2 of the 3 surviving members for awhile.
You're right about the concerts back in the day. I've been to over a 100 concerts in my life, including Poison, and let me tell you they always put on a great show... And to answer your question about what drove bands like this was 2 things, money and pussy.
10:13 There were a lot of regular people with hair like this back then. IMO, this was actually pretty tame, compared to some of the non-glam/metal hairstyles.

Yes, as others pointed out, it started with KISS, Alice Cooper, New York Dolls, T-Rex and so on, BUT the reason it went as far as it did was competition in the LA club scene. Bands from all over flocked to LA and there are only so many clubs and so many days of the week to play. The result was bands would start trying to outdo each other to get attention and get gigs and the envelope kept getting pushed to the point you had bands like D'Molls wearing lingerie because there was nowhere left to go to set yourself apart from the 100 other bands out there. Also, chicks really dug it. 🙂
glam really took off in 1985 with Motley Crue’s wearing pink, polka dots , heels. On their theatre of pain era. check out their home sweet home video. Also they had big hair as well.
You guys are funny, trying SO HARD not to like glam/hair metal of the 80's... the answer to the "why" is so so simple... the HUGE smile on all of your faces when listening/watching. My man on the left said it all... the concerts were a giant super fun party. Heck, I played in a metal band in the 80's and YES, I liked playing Ozzy/Rhodes covers, and Dio, etc more than I liked playing Ratt covers but did I go see a LOT of hair metal bands? YES, they were a giant party, especially Crue. But all of them were great live performers, every last one and the sound/charisma was far better than listening to the albums. Every singer from Warrant to Ratt was fantastic.
The Glam bands came from Alice Cooper, KISS, New York Dolls, Hanoi Rocks. The guitar intro to this song is ripped off from the song Deuce by Kiss, just played a bit different.

All these bands had at least one anthem, I've got lots of hairband albums from the late 80's and early 90's and usually only play a couple of tracks from each.
I just saw someone do a reaction to Robbie Neville's C'est La Vie. I'd love to see their reaction to it, too. It's a great song I forgot about. I also hope they get back to Ambrosia (How Much I Feel, You're the Only Woman), George Benson (Turn Your Love Around), On the Dark Side (John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band), Jackie Blue (Ozark Mountain Daredevils), Another Auld Lang Syne (Dan Fogelberg), Sweet Love (Anita Baker), and Hall & Oates (Rich Girl) if they haven't heard those.
Well in the 70s there were bands like David Bowie and Kiss and others that I really didn’t get into but that’s were it comes from and they say Motley Crue started it!!! But I’m not sure what kind of music it was called!!
I'm getting so old when 20 somethings don't know bands that were staples of my music life. Poison was a MTV darling. The extreme makeup that wasn't theatrical was one of the first for hair bands. We had a decade of greatness, despite the 2020 millennial tastes. Bands like Poison drew 20k easily.
The 80s glam era came from the 70s glam era which was WAY cooler. Bands like Sweet or The Sweet, Mott the Hoople, David Bowie (Ziggy Stardust era), T Rex and more obscure bands from the era. However Van Halen kicked all this off in the late 70s as far as the hair, charismatic frontman, fast guitar playing, etc. Every metal band wanted to emulate them.
Ty got it right, girls love guys in makeup! Androgyny has been around in rock all along, from Little Richard in the 50s to Bowie's Ziggy Stardust, Marc Bolan or The New York Dolls in the 70s. In the 80s you had not only the glam metal look, don't forget Prince. Today, bands like Maneskin do a somewhat androgynous look.
Yes, and we can go back centuries, too, with men in makeup, heels and huge wigs! Men w/long hair has always been attractive and the norm historically. 'Pretty boys' have always been popular and still are. I was in high school and college in LA in the 80s, so I definitely have actual experience w/some of these types, lol!!!

Great guitarist and a fantastic singer.
The Stadium Tour was the number 2 tour last year behind Taylor Swift It was a fun ass summer tour featuring Joan Jett, Poison, Def Leppard and Motley Crue tickets sold like hot cakes and all of them was great except for Motley Crue which disappointed me and Vince Niel sounded terrible but the rest of the guys in Motley sounded great and it was a fun show and Poison is always a fun act to see they are the ultimate party band and Brett always sounds amazing along with the rest of the guys in the band.
Not surprising. Motley really should've hung it up when they promised to, especially if they weren't gonna kick Vince in the deuce and make him shape up for the tour.
I think the glam metal thing came from 70's glam rock. Bowie was HUGE in popularizing that. Concerts featured insane costume changes, special effects, lights. It was amazing. But for me, the riffs, the writing are still important. I can only take one "anthem" every so often, then I'm looking for more depth.

This represents the epitome of the Hair/Glam Metal scene of the 80s... "Nothin' but a Good Time". Van Halen pioneered a new sound in the late 70s. VH's was much harder (and better), but it eventually evolved into this. I believe Motley Crue really started the big hair and makeup stuff for "metal" and hard rock bands in the early 80s. And with 80s MTV, the visuals of bands were a really big deal. Despite the shallow lyrics, these guys were pretty talented. And the chicks frickin' loved hair metal.
I was in high school in the seventies and pretty much everyone had long hair ! I think David Bowie was the first glamour star with Ziggy Stardust ! If these guys were on my HS Soccer Team they would have the shortest hair =)
Beginnings of this style? The roots of the look are probably to be found in Bowie and KISS. Then the Los Angeles scene of the late seventies/early 80s. Motley Crüe was certainly one of the bands that made the look spread across the country. I miss this age in which your band wasn’t good unless your guitarist could play killer solos. By the early 90s, with bands like Skid Row dominating the radio, and tons of “glam light” bands like Trixter hat were maybe just a poor approximations of the good stuff, there was a backlash and people wanted the messy, solo-free stripped down music that many grunge bands offered.
Glam started in the 70's with, among others, T-Rex, The New York Dolls, David Bowie and KISS was even lumped in with them. Ryan, if you want to see a show like this, the only band doing bombastic, over-the-top pyrotechnics, blinding light shows and several other tricks is KISS. You can see them in Cincinnati Oct. 19, Nashville Oct. 23, Knoxville Nov. 24 or Indianapolis Nov. 25. Def Leppard and Motley Crue still tour. I've seen them all at various times, including Poison but KISS is the Gold Standard. Prince and Bowie round out the top three of big shows from the 80's.
The Glam scene is still out there it just need to look for it there's probably more bands now than in the 80s. I think one of the early Glam bands was probably New York Dolls back in the 70s. And there was Ziggy stardust David Bowie he was pretty glammy
Many did the glam metal to get attention of record executives. Once they got it many quit wearing the make up. Not saying they got rid of their hair. Brett has an amazing voice. Lisa from the 270
Glam started in the 60s. Think Bowie. It carried on through the 70s. Think KISS, T-Rex. In the early 80s in LA, all the bands were copying each other. Crue, Ratt. That's why Metallica left LA. They wanted NO part of that scene. Cc has many BC Rich and Charvel guitars. The stage and lights in this video are David Lee Roth's from his Skyscraper tour. Poisoned opened for him.
Funny you mention David Lee Roth because make no mistake Van Halen created the mold in L,A and less original cheesier versions followed. BTW Kiss were not in the genre of Briiish Glam Rock like T Rex. There image and style were greatly influenced by the New York Dolls & Alice Cooper. In fact they sought Cooper'a Prioducer for Detroyer.
Glam sells...but when all the record companies, after the fluke #1 hit of Quiet Riot, descended on the Sunset Strip and signed EVERY band there...over-saturating the market, and allowing grunge to simmer under the radar, and "hair metal" (which I adore, sorry) was quickly becoming a industry joke...the movie "Rise and Fall of Western Civ: the metal years" kind of lays it out better

I was not a big Poison fan (glam rock). Some songs i'd listen to, but did not really pay attention to him until a few years ago. You probably picked up some of his facts from Behind the Music. He has gone through a lot medically! (Car accident, diabetes, hit his head on stage at Tony awards, had a brain aneurysm.) In fact when he was on the Apprentice he missed time for the aneurysm. He was a good sport on Impractical Jokers! 😂 Theo Vonn (comedian) has a mullet, now. Just a fun song! 😊
This song is awesome. First of all, it’s just high energy fun. Great vibe. Second, it’s a subject everyone can relate to. The lyrics are great in that way. Combine that simple message with that positive vibe and it’s instantly addictive. Finally, CC’s guitar work - both the riff and the solo - is TOP level. A great tone and feel.
Listen to "Something To Believe In." It's totally different, and I think you guys would like it. That song shows a more mature and serious side to the band. Beautiful lyrics, and in my opinion , a better serious song than the one they are more famous for, "Every Rose Has It's Thorn." Give it a try, there won't be any disappointment .
This song reminds me of my 1986 highschool graduation party, out in "the boondocks" with a "Poison" like sound, stoned and drunk as the sun is coming up covered in mud. Today, I prefer Fleetwood Mac "The Chain". April Wine " I like to rock "and Steely Dan songs Peg, hey 19, Reelin in the years, Time out of my mind, Deacon Blues, Babylon Sisters and more.

I've seen Poison live eight times, and they are one of the few bands from that era that still sounds great live. Of the older bands Bret is one of the few lead singers who has kept his voice. Rob Halford from Judas Priest can still bring it. Saw Ozzy live about 10 years ago, and he sounded great. Other than those two, Bret is the only one from that era I've seen in the last ten years that still sounded as good as ever. Other bands, the lead singers have dropped off so bad I felt ripped off paying for their shows. Axl Rose and Vince Neil come to mind. On your comment about recent glam metal hits, there have been a few songs that have done well, that would have totally fit in with the 80's glam metal sound, just not the look. Hinder's second and third albums had HUGE 80's vibes to them. Pop Evil released a song a decade or so back called "Boss's Daughter" that could have fit on any glam metal album. Believe that song made it to the top 10 on the rock charts. Mick Mars of Motley Crue made a guest appearance on that song. An Australian band, Airbourne, sounds exactly like 80's era AC/DC. As for how glam metal got started, some bands, mostly in L.A. started messing around with it just to get attention. They found the girls loved it. And when the girls came to all the shows, the boys followed. And like most trends in music, once one band started having success with it, everyone else copied them. The total glam appearance was really limited to just a few years. If you look at this video and compare it to videos form Poison's first album, you can see they had already pulled way back on the makeup and clothing. They actually looked enough like girls on the first album cover that some people thought they were actually girls. By this second album they had stepped it down a lot. They still had the big hair, but most of the makeup was gone, and the clothing was a lot less feminine. Same thing happened with bands like Cinderella. Lots of lace and such on their clothing for album one. Blue jeans and jean jackets by album two. The whole era is called the glam metal era, but I'd argue the actual FULL glam look was only in place for about half of that run. And you mentioned how we don't get concerts like this anymore. You have no idea just how right you are. Rock stars were gods back then and the shows were amazing. The fireworks budgets alone had to be unreal. If you want to see a video that I think best shows what a concert from that era was like, check out Bon Jovi's "Lay Your Hands on Me." I saw that particular tour, and the way that video starts is exactly how the concert started. The show I went to, the part with Jon Bon Jovi singing to the crowd from the gangplank about 10 feet over their head actually happened about halfway through the concert on some other songs, but it still shows a great representation of what you'd see over the course of the entire concert.

Seennso many shows, all the clubs, The Strip, I worked doing concert lighting and DJ/ security at a topless bar for 4 years, friends are musicians in bands you know well.
So much fun, so many women, lots of booze and drugs. Beach during the day if you could wake up during daytime and then nighttime was the rightime, Gazzaris, Whiskey, Troubador, Roxy, Rainbow Bar and Grill, Bordners, Cat and Fiddle, and lots of underground and after hours clubs, now called Raves.
@@13_13k Yes, such fun times, sounds like you were right in the middle of it all! I had forgotten Cat & Fiddle! We used to go to Bordello on Santa Monica Blvd, only open on Thurdays, & see GnR guys, DLR, Steven Tyler etc. My friend & I stranded at Billy Idol/The Cult concert at the Forum, some guys offered us a ride into town..turns out they had a limo and were members of Faster Pussy Cat & LA Guns, lol. They were going to Cathouse so we went, too. Crazy times. You can't beat LA in the 80s, that's for sure.
@@jenniferfoster1692 --- yes, Bordello, was another. Also the Central before it bacame the Viper Room. There were so many clubs like Bordello where promoters like Brent Bolthouse and others would rent out a restaurant after they closed at 10 or 11 and then at midnight they would reopen as a club like Impala, and then the Variety Arts Building across from MacArthur Park on Park Dr. They had AA then changed the name to Alcohol Salad, and they had theme nights like Cereal Night and there would be pyramids of cereal boxes and then a guy on a road bicycle on a stationary treadmill and he was nonstop riding his ass off with Wheaties logos projected behind him.
There was China Club, Myrons Ballroom which was Vertigo, and my friend DJd at those clubs and then he DJd a place called Boys and Girls on Highland just South of Santa Monica in a basement of an old office building and they opened at 2am and had my friend as dJ and they sold drink chips and you used the chips to buy blue stripe cans of beer or a cup of the vodka and kool aid they mixed in a sparkletts bottle. They stayed open til 6am then we'd go to Hollywood Billiards on Hollywood and Western which would stay open 24 hours as long as someone was playing pool on at least two tables.
My best friend and roommate and I would be out 5 or 6 nights a week with a different club each night and always could rely on going to the Rainbow. We were making money selling coke to all the djs bartenders, club owners, doormen, so we rarely waited in line, always got a table, could go to the DJ booth or the office to party.
That went on for years. We almost always brought girls with us that were friends to help get into the "new" clubs because the
doorman would always let the cute girls in first and ours would get let in and they would grab us and say we were with them and we would get in.
We'd start our night at one of 2 or 3 bars by our apartment in Marina Del Rey, have some drinks do some drugs with the waitresses sell some to the bartenders and then drive to Hollywood and wherever we were going that night. Sometimes we'd get home at 5 or 6 am and go surfing if there was waves or make a quick drive to Mt baldy and ski if there was snow.
We were nuts. LOL

@@13_13k You're bringing out all the names! Yes, I remember China Club, Central, Vertigo, Scream and Hollywood Billiards, had forgotten about that one. It was definitely a huge playground back then. I remember going to Sushi on Sunset & seeing a couple of the Jackson family who thought my boyfriend was one of the MIlli Vanilli guys, haha. Saw lots of celebs there, too. I used to work at Formosa Cafe on Santa Monica & La Brea so I saw tons of celebs before, during and after they were at their peak. It was cool because it was an old Hollywood dive restaurant/bar w/no papparazzi, famous people weren't bothered so everyone just acted normal. I acted like I didn't know who they were, usually, lol. So much fun, I never knew who would come in from night to night. Some were super cool, some not so much, lol.
Nick back in the hair metal days most of the guitar players were using rack mounted effects units and alot of people had that sound. And Ryans right , people can say what they want about 80's hair metal bands but the shows were a blast and everybody had a great time.
Remember, all the hair band guys grew up listening to classic rock, idolized Jimi Hendrix, Clapton, Eddie Van Halen, loved the Beatles, Rolling Stones, the Who, Black Sabbath, KISS, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Jeff Beck etc...They're blues based like all rockers, but they evolved with the times, added in different synth sounds & brought in the general 'good times' feel and energy of the 80s.
saw them on there debut album tour opening for Ratt . Yes , the Ratt-Poison tour will go down in history as best tour name ever. Also, the amount of women at that show was unreal . Ahhh, what a great memory. The 80’s were an amazing time to be alive, sorry you guys missed it. But at least you have all the killer music to enjoy. 🤘🏼🤘🏼

As for the era - grunge was the deathknell for glam. We went from a era of excess and glam and partying and gorgeous babes dancing on cars to a era of dirty grimy tattooed up heroin chicks and darkly depressing bands and rock.
I cant think of a scenario when both would have thrived equally in the culture cosmos.
A lot of those grunge bands evolved big-time. Stone Temple Pilots in 2010, did a VERY glam song " cinammon" or " first kiss on mars" from the same album
Steel Panther is a current band that does hair glam metal, albeit somewhat of a parody of the genre. When this song first came out back in the day, I thought it was cliched and cheesy, but it has grown on me over the decades. C.C. Deville is a guitar god.

Saw them in 1988 when they toured with David Lee Roth. Awesome show, miss those concerts when lighters where held to show love. Now smartphones have replaced lighters and people seem more interested in documenting the event than being in the moment.

I've seen these guys live quite a few times, they're just to good and fun live. The intro of the dishwasher listening to Kiss, that was actually Poisons cover of Rock n Roll All night. As for "glam" metal crashed and isn't around anymore....Wrong. Whenever Poison does go on tour they're packing it in, in arena's and outdoor pavilions. Last summer they were part of the "stadium Tour" basically opening for Motley Crue and Def Leppard and all the reviews said Poison was the best band of the tour. And they were. And a lot of these bands have inspired a new wave of "hair metal" there's quite a few bands out there doing pretty good that have followed. And CC was known in video's to highlight a lot of different guitars.

The woman I went to the show with stayed in line for water when we thought Poison was coming back on, because she didn’t care if she missed them. She said afterwards that she was glad she didn’t, because they were really good live.
I have a little more appreciation for this music now, but at the time I was a Zeppelin, Sabbath and Floyd fan, and was very pleased when bands like Nirvana drove a stake through the heart of the glam band craze.
What also hurt the musical credibility of the "glam" bands was that "Guns 'N Roses" and "The Cult" were around at the same time, putting out music that kept rock music going. While many are well aware of the large "GNR" catalogue, check out "She Sells Sanctuary" and "Fire Woman," among others by "The Cult." Ian Astbury, the lead singer, kind of had a bohemian/not fully glam and not committed to it/pre-"Jack Sparrow" Johnny Depp look about him during the band's heyday. However, he could belt out rock music. He was also so well respected that "The Cult" performed on a significant The Doors tribute album in 2000 and Astbury actually was the lead singer for a version of The Doors involving 2 of the 3 surviving members for awhile.

You're right about the concerts back in the day. I've been to over a 100 concerts in my life, including Poison, and let me tell you they always put on a great show... And to answer your question about what drove bands like this was 2 things, money and pussy.

Yes, as others pointed out, it started with KISS, Alice Cooper, New York Dolls, T-Rex and so on, BUT the reason it went as far as it did was competition in the LA club scene. Bands from all over flocked to LA and there are only so many clubs and so many days of the week to play. The result was bands would start trying to outdo each other to get attention and get gigs and the envelope kept getting pushed to the point you had bands like D'Molls wearing lingerie because there was nowhere left to go to set yourself apart from the 100 other bands out there. Also, chicks really dug it. 🙂

glam really took off in 1985 with Motley Crue’s wearing pink, polka dots , heels. On their theatre of pain era. check out their home sweet home video. Also they had big hair as well.

You guys are funny, trying SO HARD not to like glam/hair metal of the 80's... the answer to the "why" is so so simple... the HUGE smile on all of your faces when listening/watching. My man on the left said it all... the concerts were a giant super fun party. Heck, I played in a metal band in the 80's and YES, I liked playing Ozzy/Rhodes covers, and Dio, etc more than I liked playing Ratt covers but did I go see a LOT of hair metal bands?
YES, they were a giant party, especially Crue. But all of them were great live performers, every last one and the sound/charisma was far better than listening to the albums. Every singer from Warrant to Ratt was fantastic.
Motley crue started it but the mother of this genre was kiss.
The Glam bands came from Alice Cooper, KISS, New York Dolls, Hanoi Rocks. The guitar intro to this song is ripped off from the song Deuce by Kiss, just played a bit different.

All these bands had at least one anthem, I've got lots of hairband albums from the late 80's and early 90's and usually only play a couple of tracks from each.

I'm getting so old when 20 somethings don't know bands that were staples of my music life. Poison was a MTV darling. The extreme makeup that wasn't theatrical was one of the first for hair bands. We had a decade of greatness, despite the 2020 millennial tastes. Bands like Poison drew 20k easily.
The 80s glam era came from the 70s glam era which was WAY cooler. Bands like Sweet or The Sweet, Mott the Hoople, David Bowie (Ziggy Stardust era), T Rex and more obscure bands from the era. However Van Halen kicked all this off in the late 70s as far as the hair, charismatic frontman, fast guitar playing, etc. Every metal band wanted to emulate them.
Ty got it right, girls love guys in makeup! Androgyny has been around in rock all along, from Little Richard in the 50s to Bowie's Ziggy Stardust, Marc Bolan or The New York Dolls in the 70s. In the 80s you had not only the glam metal look, don't forget Prince. Today, bands like Maneskin do a somewhat androgynous look.
Yes, and we can go back centuries, too, with men in makeup, heels and huge wigs! Men w/long hair has always been attractive and the norm historically. 'Pretty boys' have always been popular and still are. I was in high school and college in LA in the 80s, so I definitely have actual experience w/some of these types, lol!!!

It was a fun ass summer tour featuring Joan Jett, Poison, Def Leppard and Motley Crue tickets sold like hot cakes and all of them was great except for Motley Crue which disappointed me and Vince Niel sounded terrible but the rest of the guys in Motley sounded great and it was a fun show and Poison is always a fun act to see they are the ultimate party band and Brett always sounds amazing along with the rest of the guys in the band.
Not surprising. Motley really should've hung it up when they promised to, especially if they weren't gonna kick Vince in the deuce and make him shape up for the tour.

I think the glam metal thing came from 70's glam rock. Bowie was HUGE in popularizing that. Concerts featured insane costume changes, special effects, lights. It was amazing. But for me, the riffs, the writing are still important. I can only take one "anthem" every so often, then I'm looking for more depth.

This represents the epitome of the Hair/Glam Metal scene of the 80s... "Nothin' but a Good Time". Van Halen pioneered a new sound in the late 70s. VH's was much harder (and better), but it eventually evolved into this. I believe Motley Crue really started the big hair and makeup stuff for "metal" and hard rock bands in the early 80s. And with 80s MTV, the visuals of bands were a really big deal. Despite the shallow lyrics, these guys were pretty talented. And the chicks frickin' loved hair metal.
The band Dirty Honey is bringing thus music back! They have some great hits!
Dee Snider is probably the firsy guy who just took his band into a plus sized woman's clothing store and worked their entire wardrobe around it.
I was in high school in the seventies and pretty much everyone had long hair ! I think David Bowie was the first glamour star with Ziggy Stardust ! If these guys were on my HS Soccer Team they would have the shortest hair =)
Beginnings of this style? The roots of the look are probably to be found in Bowie and KISS. Then the Los Angeles scene of the late seventies/early 80s. Motley Crüe was certainly one of the bands that made the look spread across the country. I miss this age in which your band wasn’t good unless your guitarist could play killer solos. By the early 90s, with bands like Skid Row dominating the radio, and tons of “glam light” bands like Trixter hat were maybe just a poor approximations of the good stuff, there was a backlash and people wanted the messy, solo-free stripped down music that many grunge bands offered.
Glam started in the 70's with, among others, T-Rex, The New York Dolls, David Bowie and KISS was even lumped in with them. Ryan, if you want to see a show like this, the only band doing bombastic, over-the-top pyrotechnics, blinding light shows and several other tricks is KISS. You can see them in Cincinnati Oct. 19, Nashville Oct. 23, Knoxville Nov. 24 or Indianapolis Nov. 25. Def Leppard and Motley Crue still tour. I've seen them all at various times, including Poison but KISS is the Gold Standard. Prince and Bowie round out the top three of big shows from the 80's.
The Glam scene is still out there it just need to look for it there's probably more bands now than in the 80s. I think one of the early Glam bands was probably New York Dolls back in the 70s. And there was Ziggy stardust David Bowie he was pretty glammy
Many did the glam metal to get attention of record executives. Once they got it many quit wearing the make up. Not saying they got rid of their hair. Brett has an amazing voice. Lisa from the 270

Glam started in the 60s. Think Bowie. It carried on through the 70s. Think KISS, T-Rex. In the early 80s in LA, all the bands were copying each other. Crue, Ratt. That's why Metallica left LA. They wanted NO part of that scene.

Glam sells...but when all the record companies, after the fluke #1 hit of Quiet Riot, descended on the Sunset Strip and signed EVERY band there...over-saturating the market, and allowing grunge to simmer under the radar, and "hair metal" (which I adore, sorry) was quickly becoming a industry joke...the movie "Rise and Fall of Western Civ: the metal years" kind of lays it out better

I was not a big Poison fan (glam rock). Some songs i'd listen to, but did not really pay attention to him until a few years ago. You probably picked up some of his facts from Behind the Music. He has gone through a lot medically! (Car accident, diabetes, hit his head on stage at Tony awards, had a brain aneurysm.) In fact when he was on the Apprentice he missed time for the aneurysm. He was a good sport on Impractical Jokers! 😂 Theo Vonn (comedian) has a mullet, now. Just a fun song! 😊

This song is awesome. First of all, it’s just high energy fun. Great vibe. Second, it’s a subject everyone can relate to. The lyrics are great in that way. Combine that simple message with that positive vibe and it’s instantly addictive. Finally, CC’s guitar work - both the riff and the solo - is TOP level. A great tone and feel.
Listen to "Something To Believe In." It's totally different, and I think you guys would like it. That song shows a more mature and serious side to the band. Beautiful lyrics, and in my opinion , a better serious song than the one they are more famous for, "Every Rose Has It's Thorn." Give it a try, there won't be any disappointment .

This song reminds me of my 1986 highschool graduation party, out in "the boondocks" with a "Poison" like sound, stoned and drunk as the sun is coming up covered in mud. Today, I prefer Fleetwood Mac "The Chain". April Wine " I like to rock "and Steely Dan songs Peg, hey 19, Reelin in the years, Time out of my mind, Deacon Blues, Babylon Sisters and more.

I've seen Poison live eight times, and they are one of the few bands from that era that still sounds great live. Of the older bands Bret is one of the few lead singers who has kept his voice. Rob Halford from Judas Priest can still bring it. Saw Ozzy live about 10 years ago, and he sounded great. Other than those two, Bret is the only one from that era I've seen in the last ten years that still sounded as good as ever. Other bands, the lead singers have dropped off so bad I felt ripped off paying for their shows. Axl Rose and Vince Neil come to mind.
On your comment about recent glam metal hits, there have been a few songs that have done well, that would have totally fit in with the 80's glam metal sound, just not the look. Hinder's second and third albums had HUGE 80's vibes to them. Pop Evil released a song a decade or so back called "Boss's Daughter" that could have fit on any glam metal album. Believe that song made it to the top 10 on the rock charts. Mick Mars of Motley Crue made a guest appearance on that song. An Australian band, Airbourne, sounds exactly like 80's era AC/DC.
As for how glam metal got started, some bands, mostly in L.A. started messing around with it just to get attention. They found the girls loved it. And when the girls came to all the shows, the boys followed. And like most trends in music, once one band started having success with it, everyone else copied them. The total glam appearance was really limited to just a few years. If you look at this video and compare it to videos form Poison's first album, you can see they had already pulled way back on the makeup and clothing. They actually looked enough like girls on the first album cover that some people thought they were actually girls. By this second album they had stepped it down a lot. They still had the big hair, but most of the makeup was gone, and the clothing was a lot less feminine. Same thing happened with bands like Cinderella. Lots of lace and such on their clothing for album one. Blue jeans and jean jackets by album two. The whole era is called the glam metal era, but I'd argue the actual FULL glam look was only in place for about half of that run.
And you mentioned how we don't get concerts like this anymore. You have no idea just how right you are. Rock stars were gods back then and the shows were amazing. The fireworks budgets alone had to be unreal. If you want to see a video that I think best shows what a concert from that era was like, check out Bon Jovi's "Lay Your Hands on Me." I saw that particular tour, and the way that video starts is exactly how the concert started. The show I went to, the part with Jon Bon Jovi singing to the crowd from the gangplank about 10 feet over their head actually happened about halfway through the concert on some other songs, but it still shows a great representation of what you'd see over the course of the entire concert.
