  • Land Rover vs Jeep - Battle of the short wheel base four wheel drives.
In this 4x4 video we have a Jeep Wrangler JK 2 Door Rubicon up against a Land Rover Defender 90 Puma.
An even match up as both 4x4 vehicles are running 35 inch tyres and twin locked. The Rubicon has factory electric lockers while the Defender is running Harrop e-lockers. The Land Rover Defender is running after market diff gears 4.37 ratio while the Jeep Wrangler is running standard 4.11 ratio. The Defender 90 is rolling on Cooper Discoverer STT Pro tyres while the Jeep JK is on the cheapish Comfossor Tyres.
This is a close comparison on paper with the slight advantage to the Land Rover Defender due to the lower diff gears and better mud terrain tyres. The other factor that needs to be mentioned is the drivers experience. The Jeep driver is more experienced in this sort of terrain and as such the harder lines were taken to even that out.
Drop us a comment as we would love to hear your thoughts on this 4x4 challenge. Which vehicle do you think did best?

Both the Jeep and Defender seem to have that special sauce for a "working" suspension. Shame the real Defender is not made anymore. That new "Defender" coming out looks like it will be an asphalt queen.

@Mikey I firmly disagree. And being in the service is not an excuse. I really wish LR would continue a body on frame solid axle. It is the proven way to get sick articulation and thus traction short of going full military grade on something or going full out Baja super truck which will never happen. The full Indy on the new LR defender will be limiting in modding and tire size, etc. My experience is you need more tire sidewall to wheel ratio and Indy suspension on a production vehicle lifts tires in extreme circumstances which limits traction and has the tendency to break things. Furthermore, the trucks I see where the suspension works great are the Jeep Wrangler, Old Defender, LC 80 series, some of the Nissan Patrols and for full size the Ram 2500 Power Wagon which I currently drive. I love LC 70 series if it weren't for their rigid articulation. There are many videos and personal experiences on line to back it up if you drop your biases and look at the contact of tires and Terra firma.

The Jeep set up looks well balanced.
The defender set up is terrible for the terrain, owner clearly hasn't figured it out yet - is he Icelandic? Whats the point of adding 35" tyres is you are going to end up with less suspension travel than stock. A 90 needs to flex!

Great match up two vehicles I have always liked. Both seemed to handle the terrain fine, although the Jeep appeared to be doing it just that tiny bit easier. The driver in the Jeep is a far better driver. I have been fourwheel driving for over 50 years and can tell which is the better driver. The Landrover driver is too hesitant, they don't keep the vehicle moving, which is what 4WDing is all about.

@@johnkemple thanks so much for elaborating. Land Rovers are great and very capable. The D90 is twin locked with no issues in the drive train. The section you mentioned is a decent downhill and down a rock ledge. No need to have the front locker engaged and loose steering capability. This is why when the front wheel is in the air and the brake is lightly on it stays still while the wheels on the ground continue to turn.
Unfortunately videos never do the terrain justice and the defender did great. Especially considering that the driver does not have a lot of experience on these sort of trails.
