I'd argue Sonic is also righteous and heroic. That's not the difference between them. But where Sonic went for Cool, Mario went for Joy. The main characterization for the plummer is as a happy little guy who can shout out a "Yah-hoo!" and it comes off as endearing, hes almost like a puppy. Sonic is chasing that Cool. And even when he tries to return to that core character, it's a 90s cool at the root and doesn't solve the problem. But joy is timeless.
I would say that the core of Sonic is his free spirit, a desire to go wherever he wants because his love of adventure and freedom which are elements that were apparent since the first game where he was the free spirited hero fighting for nature to know still being a free spirit that challenges any powerful beings that threaten what he cares about which is a timeless element that makes him stand out when written well which wasn't the case with many of the 2010 games.
Reaper is like the Punisher, but if someone just had the physical description of the Punisher with no background explained on why he is a psychomaniac who wears all black, has a skull motiff and is okay with murder.
I get the feeling he's meant to ultimately do something good too. Maybe not fully rejoin new Overwatch, but introducing the fact that he had a wife and son that he longs to see again would feel pointless if he's truly abandoned his humanity.
He still thinks Sojourn is a friend and every time he kills Doomfist he genuinely doesn’t like him. I think Reaper and Sombra will defect, Sombra might also convince Sigma to leave. Like mentioned, I doubt they’d join Overwatch, but they’d redeem themselves at some point.
I don’t think that Code of Violence was the turning point for how they were trying to make reaper more than an edgelord. We started seeing a more human edge to Reaper back in 2016 with the first Halloween comic where we saw him as Reyes and making his own Halloween costume, and then all of that was expanded upon more in Uprising and especially Retribution Retribution showed Reyes at his worst, killing a man because he would get off of a crime scot free since he’s rich, but also still as a very human man making jokes and being more than the edgy skull man (but still making clear allusions to the man he’d become. In the comic, the final panel closes on his face in shadows making the shape of the Reaper mask, and in general his “I will be judge, jury, and executioner as I know justice best” mindset was set up there for CoV to later expand on) CoV I think is the first time we saw more of the semi-present day reaper (though still years before the main story) as human, but it wasn’t the start of blizz humanizing him
Who would've guessed that giving a characterization and enriching background is a good thing. Something that Overwatch players have long forgotten - QUALITY.
I think just giving substance to a tragic character works just fine because Shadow wasn't really an edgelord in Adventure 2 or Heroes but his own game mischaracterized him as an unfeeling loner which doesn't correlate with his core and unfortunately the 2010's lead into this trope which didn't help while having mandates but now Shadow is allowed to have more to him through things like Dark Beginnings, Shadow Generations, and Sonic Movie 3.

While the edge lord thing was dead way before OW came out I still think Gabriel is cool, he's a cool character with a pretty sad story (Same with Jack and... well half the cast), a renown war hero who isolates himself after an tragic accident and perceives himself as a freak who nobody would love anymore even though his family probably would have been there for him, his son is without his father and thinks he's dead but Gabe never went to see his family in the 10~ years since. I remember back in Christmas 2016 we got the comic that said Tracer was gay, Ana and Solider were chilling, Pharra was seeing her dad, and then showed Reaper looking at a family, they were later confirmed to be his family , he misses them but he can't take off the mask and talk to them. If OW had a show animated like THE shorts that expanded on the lore and showed us moments we have only visualized, have a few episodes for some characters like Hanzo/Genji, Widowmaker, and Reaper, it'd be amazing and we could see the moments that changed them like Genji and Hanzo's fight, Widow killing her husband, or the fight between Gabriel and Jack.
I would really like to see a Mirrorwatch version of reaper and maybe solider. They could really evolve his character arch/redemption in a safe way, with a different universe fall back option

I probably won’t play overwatch much anymore, the game has burned and burnt me out completely, but I’ll always listen to and talk about the lore, cause the lore is my favorite thing about the game
Although this has nothing to do with the video I personally think Illari should join talon, she feels loads of guilt for accidentally whipping out her people and i feel like doomfist could use her guilt to convince her to join talon. Also blizzard could do what Fortnite does and have each season have lore related stuff like having a massive event at the end of the season

My favorite character is the reaper guy. he is very powerfull. special move, honestly is one of the best in the game and so he comes equipped with these two revolvers and only takes about 3 or 4 shots to actually execute a kill so it comes really in handy specially when you come from the side.
mario is the worst example you could've chosen for this video, Luigi would've been the right choice as mario is the paperwork of hero, no personality nor anything really that stands out, he's timeless cuz there's nothing to time on him, he is nothing, Luigi in the other hand offers way more than him

Ooh, those story excerpts are actually really good. I used to keep up with all Overwatch lore installments but fell off for some reason. I really need to explore what I've missed. Reaper has a lot of different appeals imo. Many Overwatch characters have their initial appeal and a deeper appeal if you choose to acknowledge it. While you can write off Reaper as "edgy killer," I'm always a sucker for serious/stoic characters. I remember first seeing him in Winston's animated short and instantly going "ooh he's cool." I like that he's not erratic or impulsive. Despite his anger/irritation, he's usually deliberate and methodical. I wouldn't like him at all if he was a cackling maniac who liked to kill and that's it. My only question with Reaper is, why does he hate Jack so much? Maybe this was answered since I stopped keeping up, but while I assumed he was jealous of Jack being Overwatch's commander, they actually seemed quite amicable in comics even when Overwatch started catching heat. Maybe it was the Venice incident in the Retribution event that caused the rift between them. Maybe someone forced him to betray Jack and he keeps using him as a scapegoat? Idk I'll stop theorizing about questions that may already be answered lol.
The thing with Jack and Gabriel is that Gabriel was totally fine with taking a step back and having Jack handle Overwatch. The jealously thing was theorised by the in-game tabloids that would obviously be looking for theories as to why they both went sky high after Gabriel tried a hostile takeover, but ultimately isn't true. It seems to me maybe they disagreed on how to 'do justice' and the Venice incident was what made it something conscious. Then Gerard Lacroix died, Ana also 'died', Genji was transferred to the main team, and Cassidy straight up ran away from Blackwatch. I feel like all the negativity sort of just festered. Just a guy who had nobody to lean on and got swallowed up by it all.

In my wildest dreams that more story content comes around, I think a Darth Vader character arc would work SO good for Reaper. Like he definitely has a sympathetic upbringing, but in the end he consciously decided to turn into the dark side (Talon) to serve a master (Doom), perhaps out of similar manipulation too. And yet, Darth Vader was an absolute menace, sadistic, authoritarian, and is willing to go to extreme lengths to ensure the upper hand is his. I think Reaper still deserves his ruthlessness and edgyness, and I think, in fact, he needs to be dehumanized. He's THE fucking Reaper, it's his career. But in the end, Vader met his match, his own family defeated him, and he was then he started seeing the bigger picture and makes a last moment sacrifice that redeems the character's image in the audience. I think you could do the same, with maybe Jack as Luke.
Also something id like to say is that its kinda annoying as Sombra gets characterized as a better and better person, she seems to lose more than she ever won.
With all the times OW's story has changed hands its no wonder they keep assasinating characters and fumbling shit like Kiriko lol, that's probably why Jeff was so obsessed (detrimentally so) with keeping it to one team

This game, it’s lore, it’s fandom, and so much else has been squandered so hard. We should have had at least small comics or something so the world’s story would at least have some kind of momentum. If they do any kind of trans media at this point, books, shows, movies, it will just feel like too little too late for me by now.

Its literally the same thing. They just put depth on Reaper instead of making him surface level. How does that make him any more or less edgy?

This game, it’s lore, it’s fandom, and so much else has been squandered so hard. We should have had at least small comics or something so the world’s story would at least have some kind of momentum. If they do any kind of trans media at this point, books, shows, movies, it will just feel like too little too late for me by now.

I dunno, I would say Mario is an asshole, no? Look at the spin off games and he's stepping on his brothers shoes and hates on him for winning. I feel like sonic is very consistent. Yeah, he's cocky, kinda rude but he can back all of that up. I feel Nintendo keeps Mario stagnant while Sega keeps Sonic fresh
