The director already told the audience everything from the beginning. Don't be misled.
He constantly gave me all the answers in various scenes. Nevertheless, the audience continued to be misled, doubted and disbelieved. That's the beauty of this movie.
The audience was equally misled as the main character in the movie.
You showed me the bait on the hook from the beginning. That's the audience. Haha.

It is a rural area, and the reason it is set as Japanese is because we easily become wary and fearful of unfamiliar foreigners. Historically, Japan invaded Korea, so it reminds us of that situation and makes us feel that way even more. Just because he was a foreigner, Japanese man was constantly portrayed as being unfairly persecuted, but that was just to deceive you. The person who played the Japanese man was a famous Japanese actor in Japan. If he had regarded it as an attack on Japan and felt it was racist, he would not have appeared in the Korean film

In Korea, it was believed that every village had a guardian deity, and there were totems called jangseung that prevented bad luck.
During the ceremony, male shaman nails this jangseung and made a living sacrifice, but there is no ritual for making a living sacrifice in Korea.

  • @reellaxboy

I think setting an outsider as Japanese is intended setup by the directer. Because When it comes to Japanese, there's a bit of mild resentment still exist among Koreans. especially in rural areas and older generations like the father, tend to be more wary of Japanese people. That's not a secret to korean audience as well. But at the same time, to be fair to the villagers, the Japanese really does behave oddly in ways that no local does, and indeed creates a sense of unease within the village! Thus, when the villagers say "its because of that Japanese," the audience can't purely accept their words, but secretly thinking, "Maybe the villagers are just prejudiced against the Japanese. because he's Japanese!" Despite the villagers were pointing the Japanese man numerous times, the audience (due to their background knowledge)secretly hold the doubt towards the villagers. Since the audience starts with doubt, so they end up trapped like the father and unsure who to trust at the climax. Directer made the audience experience the same thing with the father at the same time by setting the outsider as Japanese.

Also, a lot of people don't know how horrific and how recent the Japanese invasion of Korea was. There are grandmothers and grandfathers alive today that went through that experience so that pain is still fresh for a lot of people.

What I still remember after watching this firm was that I was very perplexed and disturbed. I was perplexed because I didn't know who to believe and I was disturbed because I could've made the same mistake/wrong choice which results in a fatal consequence although he did everything he could at his best. Yeah I still remember my heart was pounding as he had to make the final call at the end, fearing what if his choice was wrong. Anyhow I looked up what the hell the director wanted to show and when I found out his intent I was blown away. You guys should look it up too. I don't want to spoil the joy of it.

Korea is a country where 70 percent of its land is mountainous.
In the olden days, Koreans believed that each village had a guardian deity who protected it. They called it a "정령(spirit)" Spirits are difficult to translate into English, but they combine fairy + ghost. The identity of the woman in the white outfit in the work is a "spirit."
So the being that she referred to as "Grandma" would be "대정령(Great Spirit)" the mother of spirits
The reason she picked up the items that the villagers dropped was to protect them from the devil and its spy. The "spirit" is a sacred being that protects the mountains and villages

The Crazy woman is kind of 'Guardian Deity of Village' called 'Sungjoo-sin (God who protect residences)' in Korean Ritual way.
The reason that The crazy woman worn/use dead people's stuff is The crazy woman lead dead people soul to Heaven by using their stuff as a kind of payment(Tribution).
Japanese Guy and Shaman work together for hunting people from village to village.
Father ignored Guardian Deity's advise, so it lead to bad Ending.
The Sharman ran away from village, bcs Guardian Deity(Crazy woman) send a Warning by Nose Bleeding.
Guardian Deity can't harm Real Person Directly. so She uses 'purifying unholy thing inside stomach'-way toward Sharman.
and also She can't Force to stop Father. and at that moment, She didn't wear Daughter's hair pin and left it on ground bcs she don't wanna lead Daughter to heaven.

39:50 You don't need to be uncomfortable because it's intended. People suspect the stranger with no rational reason. the only reason is just because he is a stranger, especially Japanese. Considering the theme(?) of this movie, 'appearing as a different race' is a bate for hooking human's evil nature (racism).
Anyway, you chose very difficult movie.😅
Overall, the movie shows how helpless human beings are against being sinned. In this film, suspecting other people is the sin. So, The passage in the bible about Thomas's doubt appears at the beginning of the movie. I have tons of things to talk about this film because it's one of my favorite. But let me say a few things for your reference.
    Based on the director's interview.
    1. the stranger is inspired by Jesus (who was a stranger in Jerusalem)
    2. The ghost woman represents god who always(?) sends us incomplete and confusing signals.😂(the director told he felt that way)
    3. Taking picture stands for taking over soul whatever its purpose. that's why people who commit the sin are photographed.
    4. It doesn't matter whether the stranger is a real devil or not. He just said "myself". The priest terrified because he just realized his sin. The director said "I don't know what exactly the stranger was doing there. I thought he was trying to save something or someone. What he is seen as a form of devil Inspired by the story in which some apostles did not recognize the resurrected Jesus. I wanted to leave it to the audience about what to believe."
What do you want to believe?
what you see or what you want to see?
And are you sure that you can make a right decision?
Oh...so many things to talk about that I can't finish all night long. 😅😅

When the protagonist entered the house he destroyed the protection that Woman in white planted, because he was stained with sin (the murder on the road).

The Wailing, especially its ending, will definitely sit with you for a while and is considered by many (including myself) to be one of the best SK horror movies of all time. Another one is A Tale of Two Sisters, which is haunting, scary, and beautiful.
    Some recs:
The Handmaiden is the film I always refer to as the best film of 2016 that didn't win Best Picture before Parasite broke down barriers in 2019. An easy recommendation and a true masterpiece.
Some heavier stuff in the genre that SK does best; Thrillers:
Burning (one of the best slow-burn thrillers in the past decade starring Steven Yeun. Think, Gone Girl vibes)
Memories of Murder (one of Bong Joon Ho's earliest and best films about the first ever serial killer case in SK)
I Saw the Devil (intense, disturbing, gory, badass. Warning: May leave you feeling empty inside)
Thirst (a wholly unique vampire romance from the brilliantly twisted Park Chan Wook)
A Bittersweet Life (simply one of my favorite SK gangster films starring Lee Byun Hun)
Some underrated FUN gems that I think you all will enjoy:
The Beauty Inside (sweet romance with a fun twist)
Castaway (quirky indie-style romance about a man who is marooned on an island in the Han river in the heart of Seoul)
Masquerade (highly entertaining period piece based on a true story royalty switcheroo. One of Lee Byun Hun's best films, imo)
    Enjoy!

The Japanese man was the evil spirit/devil and the woman in white was a good spirit. The Shaman was working with the Japanese man/devil and the rituals he was performing was to get rid of the woman’s protection spells/rituals on the village. All of the pictures of the people were all of the ones who wavered in their faith in her and ultimately caused their families death. Another fun fact is, the devil and the woman both took items from people in order to perform their rituals.

Jesus said, “I say to you, Peter, before the rooster crows today, you will deny three times that you know Me.” We take sides with what we think will benefit us, out of greed, jealousy, or resentment, instead of choosing what we know to be the right thing to do. This is how the evil prevails. However, if you are willing to make a stand for the good despite of your lost, it is God you will find suffering next to you.

    This is a spoiler.
I think the subject of this film is Jesus Christ from the perspective of a Jewish people in Jerusalem. The Japanese (Jun Kunimura) correspond to Jesus Christ, and the Korean residents correspond to the Jewish people. In the first scene, Jun Kunimura's fishing corresponds to Jesus telling his disciples, "You will become fishers of men." Indeed, Jun Kunimura is using his identity as bait to lure Korean residents and moviegoers.
In the New Testament, Jesus performs miracles by curing people's illnesses. However, in the movie, Jun Kunimura is pointed out as the cause of the disease. This means that from the perspective of the Jewish people who hated Jesus and crucified him, Jesus would have been seen as the cause of the disease.
The male shaman (Il Gwang) in the movie corresponds to the Apostle Paul. In the New Testament, the Apostle Paul is recorded as a Jew who severely oppressed Christian believers, but later converted to Christianity and spread it widely. However, from a Jewish perspective, Apostle Paul would have been seen as a spy who was in league with Jesus from the beginning.
In the final scene, Jun Kunimura's transformation into demon form after showing the nail holes in his palms is a demonstration of the Jews' perception when they heard that Jesus had been resurrected. The Jews would have thought this was not a holy miracle but a devil's black magic.
In the movie, several ambiguous scenes were inserted to prevent Jun Kunimura from being seen as a devil. For example, the scene where Jun Kunimura performs a ritual after seeing the dead body of a Korean (Park Chun-bae) in a truck, or the scene where Jun Kunimura sheds tears while running away. This reflects the story of Jesus resurrecting Lazarus from the dead and the story of Jesus crying in the Garden of Gethsemane. Through these scenes, people have difficulty guessing the identity of Jun Kunimura.
People who have seen this movie generally think that Jun Kunimura is the devil, which is the same phenomenon that happened 2000 years ago when the Jews in Jerusalem saw Jesus as the devil and executed him. This means that even if we go back 2,000 years ago, there is a high possibility that we would have thrown stones at Jesus. This means that it was difficult to determine the identity of Jesus.
Na Hong-jin, the director of this film, is a Christian and said in an interview:
“Seeing a world where people who had no reason to be harmed were being harmed, I began to question God. That’s why I started this movie.”
So, I think Na Hong-jin created the story of Jesus from the perspective of the Jews of Jerusalem. In other words, this movie is a decalcomania version of the New Testament. This film unfolds the New Testament from a 180-degree flipped perspective.
Nevertheless, most Korean audiences do not realize this, which may be due to Koreans' anti-Japanese sentiment. This corresponds to the antipathy of the Jews of Jerusalem toward pagans.
