My favorite thing about this film was how they established the skill and history of Dutch's team. They wore Vietnam era webbing and flak jackets, they mentioned Cambodia, we saw their skillset, their familiarity with the Special Forces units lost in the jungle, all to establish that they were an exceptionally lethal and well organized team without any long exposition. Then, immediately, they established how outclassed they were by the Predator. Masterfully done.
Masterful case of show don't tell. Using the scenarios to bring us up to speed.
Exactly. The whole point of the absolutely overkill action scenes in beginning is to make us realize that they can do that, and they're still more or less helpless against the Predator.
Jesse Ventura was a former Navy Seal so he could bring real-life expertise to the set.

The thing I really loved about this movie is how Arnold truly struggled with the predator, and in the end he just got lucky. Most movies with Arnold in this time period made him an unstoppable force with no competition. It was a pleasant surprise.
I read that the original script called for Arnold straight up wrecking the Predator by using his upper body strength… Arnold himself vetoed that stating it would be highly unrealistic.., and it was his idea for him to hunt the Predator and set the traps…

When the Predator uses recordings of their talking to trap them I liken it to a hunter using a duck call. He doesn't even know what he is saying, he is just making "human sounds" instead of "duck sounds".
I'm pretty sure that was the idea behind it. Really cool concept, I think =)

Yeah. The novels refer to it simply as "the animal loop". Just a digital hunting call that can record whatever you're hunting to try to lure it, or to cause confusion when hunting intelligent prey.
Yautja have translator from human languages so he understand what they talk. They rare speak to humans but they can.

6:14 Billy mentioning "six men wearing U.S. issue army boots" reminds me of one of the "brilliant" ideas tried in Vietnam. The U.S, military jungle boot (the iconic 'Nam boot) had a unique tread pattern which worked extremely well for trekking through the mud in the jungle, but it left a distinctive, easily recognized track which could give away the movement of American troops. Someone came up with the idea of shaping the sole of the boot like the sole of a human foot so the tracks it left would look like it was made by some barefooted Vietnamese peasants. However, the average G.I. shoe size was about 2 or 3 sizes larger than the average Vietnamese shoe size, so when the boot stepped into soft soil, it left a perfect imprint of a human foot with a perfect larger outline of a combat boot around it. Also, having a smaller 3 dimensional foot sticking out of the bottom of a larger boot made these boots very unstable to walk in. The human footprint boot idea was abandoned, but it was replaced (at least in one area) by a simpler, more effective idea. Bunches of average sized U.S. jungle boots were dropped into the area, and people there were happy to have durable, very protective boots to wear when walking through the jungle regardless of whether they were a couple of size too large, and so soon everybody and his cousin was wearing U.S. jungle boots and leaving tracks that were basically indistinguishable from tracks made by U.S. troop.
So for clarification on Arnold’s character (Dutch) in the scene where he gets shot in the arm. The Predator didn’t actually hit Dutch’s arm, he instead shot Dutch’s gun, causing it to explode. That’s why Dutch’s arm got a bit bloodied, but not too heavily damaged. It’s a subtle miss, but it does put on that illusion that Dutch’s arm is so big that it can tank a shot from the Predator’s gun. lol
Yep. He got hit with superheated shrapnel from his exploding rifle. A direct plasma hit to his arm would’ve probably blown it off.
@@Gunnar001 If it was calibrated as such. The Plasmacaster can be adjusted for shot strength. It's possible for the lower end to cause burns, but perhaps not outright limb loss.

If you loved Terminator and Predator you'll totally flip for "Total Recall" (1990). It's one of my favorite Arnold films.

The youngsters nowadays are cracking up when the jungle theme starts playing. It's just funny to them. They just don't understand that that's exactly how atmosphere was achieved in movies... It's sad.
I love how we see how good these guys are that they take out a camp with no issues what so ever, just to hammer down how advanced the Predator actually is with how easily it disposes of everyone. This movie's cinematography is so good, I really feel like no shot is wasted.

The late great Stan Winston designed the Predator costume among other classic creatures. The Terminator series, the first three Jurassic Park films, Aliens, The Thing, the first two Predator films, Inspector Gadget, Iron Man, and Edward Scissorhands.

Don't Drink It Fact: The Predator's (Kevin Peter Hall) blood - a goopy substance with the color of Mountain Dew - was made on-set using a mixture of the liquid from inside glow sticks and KY Jelly.
Practical Joke Fact: Jesse Ventura was delighted to find out from the wardrobe department that his arms were one inch bigger than Arnold Schwarzenegger's. He suggested to Schwarzenegger that they measure arms, with the winner getting a bottle of champagne. Ventura lost, because Schwarzenegger had told the wardrobe department to tell Ventura that his arms were bigger. You're going to have to get up much earlier in the day to get one over a professional practical joker.
Practical Effect Fact: The invisibility cloaking effect was achieved with a bright red suit (because it was the farthest opposite of the green of the jungle and the blue of the sky) the size of the Predator (Kevin Peter Hall). The red was removed with chroma key techniques, leaving an empty area. The take was then repeated without the actors using a 30% wider lens on the camera. When the two takes were combined optically, the jungle from the second take filled in the empty area. Because the second take was filmed with a wider lens, a vague outline of the alien could be seen with the background scenery bending around its shape.

Also Jean-Claude Van Damme was the original Predator (in unused rough footage) before he chose to leave the film altogether (due be being very, very, uncomfortable in a hot jungle in a stuffy suit), later he would be replaced by Kevin Peter Hall. Jean-Claude would go work on other films instead and became a big action star himself.

I have heard working in that costume in those conditions was extremely grueling. He had to spend many hours in it.
The composer for this, Alan Silvestri, is probably now most famously known for the Avengers theme from all those films (and reused in other MCU films). It's always wonderful finding a composer that can land hit after hit over a large span of years.
He also composed the soundtracks to the Back To The Future trilogy, Romancing The Stone, Summer Rental, Flight Of The Navigator, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Overboard, The Abyss, Forest Gump, Death Becomes Her, Lilo & Stitch, Stewart Little 1 & 2, Eraser, Cast Away, G.I. Good reaction, guys. Btw, this 1987 movie featured 2 actors who many years later would actually go on to be Governors. Arnold became the Governor of California...and Jesse Ventura (the guy with the huge machine gun who upon being told he was shot, replied with "I ain't got time to bleed!") became the Governor of Minnesota. And a 3rd guy in that group ran for the Governor of Kentucky.
Also, Governor Jesse Ventura was a former US Navy Seal who ran covert operations like these. After his military career he eventually became one of the biggest WWE wrestlers, and then transitioned into some acting roles, and then successfully campaigned to be the Governor of Minnesota.

The titular creature was originally played by Jean Claude Van Damme, but was replaced by the more physically imposing Kevin Peter Hall. Actually, both were able to make me come...
They were stumped well into production at how to depict the predator. On a plane flight with someone involved with the film, I forget who, James Cameron gave a suggestion: "mandibles". Even in the movies he wasn't making in the 80s and 90s he was helping to save the day. It was a bit of a mistake to show the alien ship at the start because it was a huge spoiler. But the rest of the movie - great. Get to the choppah!
I totally agree about showing the spaceship at the start. When I first caught this movie on TBS in the 90's, I was flipping through the channels and entirely missed that opening scene. When I rewatched it later on, I thought the opening shot of the spaceship would've ruined the experience for me.
Yeah.... I think both opening scenes for Predator AND The Thing, should've never made it into the final cut.

Not a masterpiece, but it is a very underrated sequel. Gets a lot more hate than it should, by people who don't seem to know what a bad movie really is. It doesn't quite live up to the original for epicness, but that's stiff competition that very few sequels can ever achieve. It's certainly one of the sequels that doesn't suffer from sequilitis as much as most other franchises.

Fun fact: This was filmed down in Mismaloya, Mexico and the actors hated it because of the heat,insects and other stuff. They were miserable the whole time. The mini gun is electric so there was a battery cable hooked to it that was hidden by special affects.

He quit the movie because it was so very difficult for him to be in that original stuffy bulky suit in such hot jungle in the heat season....did hurt his career any because he would later become a huge action star himself.
There is a really cool theory that was somewhat backed up by cannon that the T-800 model terminators that skynet uses are modeled after Dutch . After defeating a predator 1 v 1 the govt took Dutch and they started preparing for a predator invasion . They used tech recovered to advance our tech and even gave Dutch some cyber parts so he could live longer because he took a radiation hit from the explosion. Dutch would come to be one of the founders of Cyberdyne systems which was originally created to combat predators. Cyberdyne /Skynet saw Dutch as the greatest human warrior so they used his image on the T-800
I wish i could remember where I read this , it was from a newer Predator graphic story . It also included Dutch's brother who basically spent his life searching for Dutch after this incident.
If you two haven't seen it yet, Conan The Barbarian (1982) is a must see! Arnold's breakout role, plus a truly surprising, unique film of adventure like no other!
As for the Predator movies. None are on par with the original, but Predator 2 is well worth the watch, and a really fun and interesting movie. The most recent, Prey, is well liked. It's not a franchise that had many winners, but it is still fun to watch through them, if/when the mood strikes. The Predator vs Aliens movies are even worse - BUT, ya know, they're all we've got for that scenario and have some dumb fun, I suppose.
Arnie has some more great movies to watch though. Total Recall, Running Man, Twins, True Lies, Commando, Kindergarten Cop, The Last Action Hero... Take your pick! And, don't forget Conan!! ❤❤
Shane Black, did the Leathal Weapons movies and other films. Think he was a writer and producer. Jean Claude Va Damme was in the actually Predator costume to begin with filming, but quit or was replaced. The guy at the end flying the chopper to pick up Dutch was the real person in the costume. Kevin Peter Hall plays the helicopter pilot in the 1987 film Predator and also plays the Predator in the film. Director John McTiernan gave Hall the role of the unnamed pilot as a thank you for his weeks of grueling work in the Predator suit. Hall also makes a cameo as the pilot who comments on the view of the mushroom cloud in the Guatemalan jungle.
One of the weird bits of trivia that I always like to point out when someone reacts to this movie is that two of the actors - Arnold, obviously, and Jesse Ventura, who played the guy who chewed tobacco - both later become governors in real life. Arnold was governor of California and Jesse Ventura was governor of Minnesota.
And the guy who played Billy apparently ran for governor of Kentucky, but lost.
Peter Cullen the original voice actor for Optimus Prime was the voice of the Predator.
The sound design and sound editing for Predator was outstanding. In movies theaters with good sound systems, you got a sense of where the Predator was located when camoflaged by the sound of a tree branch or other forest material. You also knew when the Predator was above or to the right or left of a character. Very smart filmmaking that enhanced our appreciation of the stealthiness of the alien creature.
Another John McTiernan movie that doesn't get enough love is The 13th Warrior, starring Antonio Banderas. It's an adaptation of the Michael Crichton novel "Eaters Of The Dead", which itself is a riff on the classic story of Beowulf. VERY different from both Die Hard and Predator, but also very enjoyable.
Yes! I love that movie! Honestly I'm just a Michael Crichton fan in general, but this was an excellent adaptation of an otherwise middling book.

Growing up in the 80's was the most magical time, enjoying the Action 80's. Bruce Willis may have proven that you don't need muscles to fight off bad guys, but you just can't help but love the Schwarzenegger era. So glad you guys got a kick out of 1 of my Top 3 favorite Arnold movies!

This was filmed here in México, the intro scene at the beach and the military base was in Mismaloya town, near Puerto Vallarta , and there is a atractive park called EL Edén where at this day is there a part of the chopper they blew out and a predator statue

Jesse Ventura was a professional wrestler in his younger years and then later was elected as the governor of Minnesota. So there are two future governors in this movie, the other of course being Arnold as the future governor of California.
He was a Navy SEAL before becoming a wrestler too
Last year there were former special forces team members who put the Predator Mud scene to the test. They used the best thermal infrared imagers the Army and Navy have and the Mud defeated all four military-grade infrared imagers.
Terminator, T2, Alien, Aliens, Predator, Robocop, and Starship Troopers are all so good in a very similar way.

Hey, Chandra and Jordan! "Predator" is a Schwarzenegger action classic directed by John McTiernan, director of "Die Hard", "Die Hard with a Vengeance", "The Hunt for Red October", "Medicine Man", "The Thomas Crown Affair" and "The 13th Warrior".
The Schwarzenegger-accented "Get to the chopper!" became a popular catch-phrase that entered into the general lexicon.
The Predator species name is YAUTJA (YOWT-ja). They are interstellar sportsmen whose entire culture revolves around big game hunting. They test themselves against apex predators which often includes sentient beings like man. They have a code in that they do not kill the unarmed or the infirm as it is not challenging nor do they kill pregnant prey as a way of husbanding the livestock. If vanquished, they leave no trace of themselves behind by detonating a powerful bomb so as to leave the "preserve" pristine by not contaminating the indigenous culture with their technology. As a rite of passage, they must blood themselves by killing a xenomorph from the "Alien" series. If prey is worthy by offering good sport and defeating the hunter, the tribe will bestow the victor with a trophy.
There's a pretty good Predator fan film on TH-cam set in the Middle Ages with knights called "Predator: Dark Ages" starring Adrian Bouchet (Steapa) from "The Last Kingdom"!
The movie is an alien variant of "The Most Dangerous Game", the Richard Connell short story from 1924 which has inspired countless man-hunting-man movies like "Hard Target", "The Naked Prey", "Race with the Devil", "Southern Comfort", "The Running Man", "Surviving the Game" and "Beyond the Reach".
The Central American guerrillas were probably Communists receiving supply and support from Russian advisors explaining the Soviet presence.
Billy faced off against the Predator alone because he would rather die fighting than running; it was a matter of honor. He drew first blood with his machete so that the Predator would not have the privilege. It's a Native American custom.
Anna was unarmed and, therefore, spared. Wounded Poncho was killed because he had already been marked as a combatant and was still holding a weapon.
The Predator released Dutch, took off its mask and fought him hand-to-hand because it considered Dutch to be worthwhile prey.
The Predator repeated Dutch's question back to him, "What the he!! are you?" as a way of expressing begrudging admiration for the puny meatbag that bested him.
The last laugh was the Predator's mimicry. It was using a recording of Billy's laughter at Hawkins' lewd joke to express a fatalistic defiance to Dutch.
Three of the cast went into politics! Schwarzenegger became Governor of California, former wrestler Jesse "The Body" Ventura, who played heavy-gunner Blaine, became Governor of Minnesota and Sonny Landham, who played tracker Billy, ran for Governor of Kentucky.
Jean Claude Van Damme was supposed to be the Predator originally but he had difficulty with the alien suit as initially designed and was considered too small in stature to be threatening!
Special Effects maestro Stan Winston was tasked with redesigning the alien to fit the 7'2" Kevin Peter Hall who appears, unmasked, as the helicopter pilot at the end. The dreds were inspired by a Rastafarian painting in producer Joel Silver's office and the mandibles were the contribution of a napkin sketch by director James Cameron who shared a flight and a brainstorming conversation with Winston by pure chance!
Danny Glover stars in the underrated urban-set "PREDATOR 2" which has some memorable set pieces and provides more lore! Dark Horse comics capitalized on crossing the Predator franchise with the Alien franchise inspiring Hollywood to make TWO crossover "ALIEN vs. PREDATOR" films with moderately successful to excellent results. They're fun and exciting guilty pleasures with the second one, "ALIENS vs. PREDATOR: REQUIEM", being particularly lean and mean. There is also a "PREDATORS" film produced by Robert Rodriguez that is definitely worth a look. "THE PREDATOR" (2018) REBOOT, however, should be approached with caution as it very nearly killed the franchise! The 18th-century set "PREY" is an excellent prequel to the original film which was released on Hulu. The Alien films have a RICHER SUBTEXT while the Predator films are more ACTION FARE but they're both fun sci-fi thrillers.

I'm a big fan of Predator 2. Imho it's the best one of any of the sequels. Expands on the Predator lore in an interesting way too.

Originally, Dutch was supposed to beat the Predator when they fought mano a mano because, you know, Arnold's the hero, but it was Arnold himself who said "I can't beat him. He's a monster, and I'm just a man," and the scene was changed to have the Predator completely dominating the fight, and Dutch having to use the booby trap to beat him.

Alan Silvestri also did the score for Back to the Future which is very similar except for the main theme. Once you know this, you'll always hear the music of one in the other. ;)

The fact that you realize smaller species of scorpion are often more potent. Coolness. I actually have that species as a pet and they glow insanely bright under UV. Anyhow, I like the chemestry you two have, oh how I wish I had friends to watch movies with. All my friends are not so local or not into movies, etc. Most of them don't even watch my videos or know I have even been on TV , lol.
They actually did a field test because of this movie and a human can avoid detection from heat vision with a layer of mud. There’s an in depth video on TH-cam about it.
Fun fact: The alien blood was made by breaking open glow sticks and adding a thickening agent. (Not sure if they thought about safety back then. Lol)
Right now what I love most about you two is that you always RESPECT THE INTEGRITY of the movie that you're watching. You allow yourselves to feel what the movie (piece of art) is trying to convey.
It's reactors like yourselves that allow me to feel like I'm watching the movie for the first time again. That is something special.

10 years after this movie, Blaine was the governor of my state, lol. Not as famous as Arnold and California but it surprised a bunch of people.

Hawkins was played by Shane Black. He wrote "Lethal Weapon" and "The Long, Kiss Goodnight."

I look back in awe that I watched this with my dad when I was 10 back when it came out on video. Can't imagine letting my kids watch this nowadays lol.

The greatest action movie that’s not Arnold is ROBOCOP! It was just one year after Predator. My friends and I used to talk about these two movies like every single day at lunch in middle school! 😛

Predator, Alien, Terminator are all just some of the great movie monsters special effects legend Stan "The Man" Winston and his effects company brought to life. Also, the Predator's sounds and voice at the end are from Peter "Optimus Prime" Cullen. The chopper pilot was played by the guy who played the Predator, as a way of them letting us see him outside of the suit, for all of the suffering he had to go through. Additionally, some of the cloaked Predator effects are left over from when Jean Claud VanDamm was playing the Predator prior to its rework. Since it's hidden by the cloaking effect, you can't really tell that it's more lithe than the uncloaked one. I believe there's a mockup somewhere of what the Predator was originally intended to look like (more slender, reptilian), that you could look up. We do see some of VanDamm's work in the making of stuff on the special editions.
And the Creature effects were done by the same studio that did Aliens, Terminator 1 & 2, and Jurassic Park to name a few, Stan Winston Studios.
I just rewatched this a couple nights ago! With a big bowl of popcorn and the windows open to let in that early summer breeze... doesn't get much better than that 😃

What many get wrong is that the "maniacal" laughter at the end is the Predators recreation of the Indians laughter (on hearing the joke).
Shane Black, reading the comic at the very end credits, is the writer of Lethal Weapon. He has also written and directed other movies including a favorite of mine, Nice Guys.
Predator and Die Hare are 2 of the best action movies. A couple other movies to check out. Another Arnie movie, "True Lies", lots of action, not many explosions but lots of humor. Another really good action movie "The Kingsman The Secret Service". There are some amazing fight scenes in it.

What make this 80s classic Arnie movie so special at the time was subverting expectation in an actual refreshing great way from a typical action fest beginning into a surprising effective horror movie. Yes indeed its from the same filmmaker that also did classic Die Hard :-)
one of the most convincing designs of an alien in the history of cinema. It would not have been like this if they had stuck to the original idea - a rubber lobster with Jean-Claude Van Damme stuffed inside it. Van Damme turned down the role after realizing that he would not allow him to demonstrate his karate skills.. 😊
I've watched this movie a bunch of times, and never picked up on the role reversal with Dutch camouflaged in the trees, and the Predator firing wildly like its previous victims... well done Chandra!
