One squirrel will empty a feeder that would otherwise service dozens of birds of many species for hours or days. The squirrels are very aggressive with birds (the innkeeper’s FRIENDS, for whom he goes to trouble and expense to attract to his feeders). It is like “Why not just give the crack gangs enough money for their stuff, and they’ll leave you alone.” You wanna try that, don’t be being NEAR to me. Squirrels and crack gangs be WAITING IN LINE.

The movie _Young Einstein_ shows young Albert growing up on the family farm in Tasmania. One day, Albert noticed his dad was very busy doing something. "What are you doing dad?" "I'm going to flood this valley son." "But dad. That will drown all the little animals." "Yes son. In one go."
I really like Einstein's father. Squirrels are vermin. They chew things and cause huge damage. I'm going to have to replace the back window on my house. They carry fleas, ticks, and bot flies. They carry viruses and bacteria transmissible to humans. Vermin. They deserve to be killed.

puppetsock Ah yes, such great logic. We, as a species, also cause a lot of damage (if not more) to other animals, carry bugs, and carry bacteria, viruses, and diseases, which are transmissible, not only to other species, but *gasp* also to other humans! Does that mean we deserve to be killed too? And that just about every other animal does as well?
For one thing, other species do not need our “approval” in order to survive. Nonetheless, squirrels play a vital role in forest regeneration and seed dispersal, so they help maintain a healthy ecosystem, and we need a healthy ecosystem in order to survive, as it supports the environment we live in. Love them or hate them, other species have just as much of a “right” to exist as we do, and history shows us what happens when we try to “play God”, as some say, and attempt to wipe out species (I highly recommend looking up the Indian vulture crisis and its consequences, a great example of what happens when a species rapidly vanishes across its range. The poisoning was not intentional in it, but the consequences of this event do show how drastic wiping out an ecologically important native species can be for the environment. Vultures are keystone species, and they are extremely important in maintaining healthy ecosystems). If you wish to discourage squirrels or “control” their populations near you, I recommend putting up nesting boxes for owls, playing audio of predator sounds every now and then, and sealing off all possible entrances into your house.

    Solution:
    One metal pole
One metal cone under the pole, wide skirt side facing down (pole goes through cone opening)
One metal cone above the pole. make sure it wide enough to cover feeder, not wide enough to stand/crawl on (so use a cylinder feeder) so 45 degrees or more
Oil up the top metal cone and bottom.
    Thats it!

I just sprinkle the black oil sunflower seeds on the pavement, and let the squirrels, sparrows, chipmunk(s), doves, robins, crows, bluejays, chickadees, feed to their delight. Been doing it now 10 years, track the populations, and enjoy the company. One squirrel and one chipmunk are almost tame. there was one chipmunk who used to feed a mole a few years back with bread crusts and seeds. Love it. Never had an infestation problem either. Poor baby squirrel. Jeesh.

Our huge back yard maple tree was once home to many squirrel families. I worked in the city across the river, so I used to trap squirrels and send them many miles across the river to drop them off before work each morning.
After a few dozen, I noticed that the population never decreased.
The absence of squirrels just created a vacuum, so others came on to take their homes in our tree.
I threw in the towel and made peace with them. They continued to have their way with our garden.

Some large birds affect the shroud in the same way. So far so good even if the squirrel manages to get to the seed feeder past the shroud. 😊

Which is bird seed. Even though my back yard is full of nuts underground. They still want my bird seed. So lets say this really makes me sad to the birds not the frinken squirrel. I almost break my ankle every year from holes due to the squirrels and their food. Believe me there not going hungry. They're to finken smart and determined.

One of my greatest joys was to watch all the different types of birds thought out the year that visited our bird feeder, and my disappointment of an empty feeder after a squirrel found its way through all my numerous misguided attempts to stop it.
My greatest regret was discovering all the rodents the feeder attracted, and after settling in, they found ways into our house, my work shed, our garden shed, my truck, and my wife’s car, chewing their way into my engine’s air filter, chewing my engines hood insulation to making a nest in my cabin intake filter, chewing my wife’s brand new Golf Alltrack VW’s hood insulation and making nests deep down along the engine block, and crewing their way inside the car. To this day, when the engine warms up or when I turn the heater on, I still smell rodent dropping.

I’m sorry you misunderstood what I meant when I wrote “Rodents”; what I meant was mice.
“My greatest regret was discovering all the rodents the feeder attracted”
It’s not that the mice or the squirrel’s got into the feeder; the mice were attracted to the birdseed that the birds dropped from the feeder onto the ground and into the grass. It’s what happens at night under the cover of darkness.

The squirrels are just LEARNING and, since there are no risks, they eventually figure out what they need to do. If you want to prevent squirrels, you've got to make the learning risky--incorporate some penalties as they learn, THEN you have a chance!
