Squirrel Baffle Entertainment

  • I am trying to design a squirrel baffle that is both entertaining and inexpensive. My latest venture is a piece of 3" diameter PVC pipe I found in the garage. I drilled 2 holes in the top and suspended it over the pole holding my bird feeders with swimsuit elastic I found in the basement. One morning I found the squirrel on top of my feeders. Thinking the squirrel had climbed up the pole through the pipe I added some 1" screws around the bottom of the pipe to prevent entry to the pole. This worked for awhile. I managed to film the critter in action and discovered how he was defeating the baffle. I made a modification which seems to work - for today.

      It gives my dog something to do and she catches one every once in a while. It keeps her in the yard and out of the forest.

    I have a squirrel invasion at my feeders also. May have to try this. Even if they figure it out it would still be fun watching them.

      I use m80's on my bird feeder baffles, my bird feeders are squirrel free. I sometimes leave the arms and legs around for a few days so the other squirrels get a heads-up.

    • @MrEsMysteriesMagicks
      @MrEsMysteriesMagicks 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There are a number of videos showing squirrels defeating Slinkys. In one, the squirrel actually figured out that if he timed it right, he could run up the pole just when the Slinky contracted to its smallest size and then jump to the feeder. In another, the Slinky had lost its tension and hung there essentially giving the squirrel a ladder. Grease the pole under your Slinky or baffle and it gives them a double whammy.

    Squirrels have to be one of the most persistant animals i know of. They are like Marines. They will over come and adopt.

    • @patanewman
      @patanewman  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, a constant battle. Every day they check the baffle, the twirl feeder to see if the battery is dead, and the trees to see if the branches have grown enough for them to jump on to the feeders. It's been 5 years since I made that video. I hate to say it but squirrels rule.

    Simple solution: use a length of PVC pipe twice as long. Ditch the swimsuit elastic for the round version of elastic sold in sewing supply departments as it will last much longer.

  • @FarrellMcGovern
    @FarrellMcGovern 7 ปีที่แล้ว +88

    Looking at it, I think that if you made the PVC pipe section a little over twice as long, the squirrels wouldn't be able get high enough to jump over the top of the pipe section.

    Haven't had squirrels here in a while. I live in the country with Fox squirrels. I have a wobbling baffle. If they come around and get past my baffles they will be met with my pellet gun.
    It's my bird seed and my money. I decide who gets dibs. And that is not the tree mice.

    • @patanewman
      @patanewman  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have a wobbling baffle in place now. They have never been able to overcome it. I have to keep moving the feeder as the trees grow otherwise they launch from the branches. Thanks for watching.

    I could never seem to find a way to keep the squirrels out until I read that birds don't have the receptors for hot spices such as chili powder but squirrels do, I bought a small can of it and mixed it in with the bird seed and after a few attempts by the squirrels wanting to eat the bird feed, no more squirrels.
