I lived outside for almost a decade. Out of all the animals that came around, the squirrels were by far the most tenacious and intelligent when they knew food was around.

Our Australia Shepherd would give a squirrel a good run in the tenacious and problem solving department. She's just not good at climbing trees. I've been entertained by her attempts to outwit the rabbits under the lawn tool shed. She's watched how the main rabbit reacts then tries a counter-measure. But rabbits aren't stupid either, as they can quickly adapt to the new tactics. Animals are amazing.

I raised a little genius, when blown from his nest during a windy ice storm. My son named him Jerry. Jerry possessed amazing intelligence. His ability to learn, was far above any domestic animal that I've ever seen. He was free to patrol my home, and yes, he did patrol it he did. He also used his litter box, learned to catch, and do other tricks with few lessons. When Jerry matured, he longed to be free. We lived in the mountains, and the tree where he was blown from, was just outside my window, so giving him his freedom without worry, was pretty easy. I saw and fed him nearly every day. He had lot's of friends and also found a partner. Animals are a blessing to this sometimes, crazy world.

@@LyneisFilm Interesting! We can have as many as a dozen in our backyard, and we usually make them come take peanuts from our hand.
In the end squirrels are more interesting than birds. I mean it's cool to feed birds, but you can't get to know them "personally" as you can squirrels, squirrels are just easier to identify individually (at least for me). Different individuals have highly different behaviors, while also sharing highly similar traits. Like they almost all approach our hand-feeding "station" (a chair set right outside our patio slider) in a stylized and predictable manner that I assume is based on some innate "strategic reasoning" about what makes a path "safer," while at the same time they are perhaps easiest to keep track of (given how quickly/frequently their fur color changes) by behavior: some are timid, some are bold, some are aggressive and grabby, some take peanuts gently, etc.

In all of your efforts, you actually trained (increasingly complex positive reinforcement) the squirrels to keep attempting your puzzle to receive a reward. It is like training your dog: whistling from you means a treat, then sitting and a whistle earns a treat, then sitting and giving a paw-handshake with a whistle earns a treat, etc.

And would devour the feeds faster than the sparrows would. I've now dedicated one of the feeders to the squirrel which is also shared by rose-ringed parakeets. This new feeder has sunflower seeds and the remaining three use foxtail millets meant for sparrows.

I just came across your first squirrel video, checked your channel to see if there were any others, and lo and behold here's a brand new one uploaded only three hours ago! As before, your down-to-earth narration is great - and I love that jay telling the squirrel off in terms that sound like they would be unprintable if they were in human language, haha. I appreciate that you made a seperate squirrel cafe stocked with all the finest items on a squirrel's dream menu - please let us know how that burying of the nuts goes in the neighbor's yard, though (and whether the shiny new squirrel baffle actually keeps these little geniuses out of the bird feeder.) Thank you for making these videos.

cheeky male gray squirrel. He no longer can spill the bird food out of the feeder, so he
trashes all of my wife's potted plants. now feed him Squirrel Delight (fruit and shelled
