What i especially love about 90s games is the extremely melodic, haunting, creative and atmospheric music. Especially the super nintendo and playstation era had fantastic music. We just don't have that anymore.
I second those statements. Good audio design is a truly underrated part of game development, and 90s provided us with some evergreen classic tunes that people still hum and reminiscence today. We've come to a point where the modern devs literally consider strong, melodic and atmospheric music to be "too distracting". That's the excuse Capcom gave for the ""remake 2's"" near complete lack of soundtrack.
I actually really loved the Crimson heads and Lisa Trevor monsters in the remake. They added tension and intensity to the experience and made the game more scarier than it should've been.
The definitely added tension and scares, but I feel like the tension of scares were supposed to come from the atmosphere. I feel like Mikami was trying to incorporate jump scares into the gameplay, with the crimson heads.
Avalanche Reviews I agree, though after the first encounter they wouldn't be a jumpscare anymore. Unless if a save is loaded after a period of time or if memory fails. Anyways, the inclusion of crimson heads can add to horror in a more obvious way, for example the slurpers in SH3. However, both enemies can be annoying if encountered too often in a period of time. I will concede that if a player kills a bunch of enemies throughout the mansion, it can be too much of a hell to take if not remedied as soon as possible with a trusty lighter and fuel canister. The issue of the fuel canister is also a drag, since it takes a slot of inventory, a problem magified in Chris's story. So, it's fine if you don't think they are scary or add any true horror to RE remake, as it's your opinion after all. But I feel that it can make the game have more emphasis on making as little mistakes as possible, a concept well ingrained in the essence of Survival Horror.
@@AvalancheReviews i feel like there's only so much you can do when making atmospheric scares for a resident evil game, atmospheric scares are more for silent hill, i think most of resident evil's scares come from trying to survive
I agree, but subsequent playthroughs I would kill everything and do the puzzles later, so when going from room to room, I name the zombies and get excited when they woke up as a Crimson Head being like, “GREG!! YOU’RE BACK!!”
I love the auditory abortion track in the kitchen. It really fits the clumsy zombies trying to waddle around a table after you. As long as it’s not your first play through
“Ok my inner fanboy might have over sold them a bit”. Nope, you were right. The pre-rendered backgrounds still look awesome to this day. That bloody handprint on the wall always got me.
Over the years I realized some odd stuff. Now as a cop I've notice a lot of odd things. Still my #1 game. I also read the books. 1. Why did the whole team didn't have radios? 2. Jill had no vest. 3. A grenade launcher, rocket launcher for a police department!? 4. NO RIFLES for a special team? 5.why did you split up!?
I think I can answer all of those with "horror movie logic" Also, to add to the list, what police force has Beretta m9's as standard issue side arms???
Avalanche Reviews The standard issue handgun of the RPD was probably the Browning Hi-Power, as it was the gun Claire got from that RPD car's glove compartment. The M9 / Samurai Edge was used only by the S.T.A.R.S team.
@@fatelyre I think the Browning Hi-Power was the standard issue handgun for the RPD up until sometime before RE2, when they switched to the H&K VP70 (the handgun Leon uses in RE2). And then I think as for 5, since the S.T.A.R.S. team was essentially a special forces branch of the RPD my guess is (and this is just a guess) they would've been trained to handle themselves both as a team and by themselves as individuals.
having a BODYCAM footage of the whole ordeal would have been really great evidence... Still, I bet you're jealous of how lavish their police station was. :D well... before the outbreak at least.
Great video, but one small correction: ONLY the Director's Cut - Dual Shock Edition has the notorious new soundtrack. The ORIGINAL, "normal" Director's Cut has the original RE1 soundtrack. Sadly, the version of RE1 found in the PSN Store is called just "Director's Cut", but it is, in fact, the Dual Shock Edition. Which could explain the confusion. Personally, if you must play the OG game, I'd recommend the very original PS1 or PC release, or the quite superb Nintendo DS port, "Deadly Silence".
+Teemuslayer yeah, I've had a couple people point that out. I really dropped the ball there. I guess I just assumed all the rereleases had the altered ost. That ds version is amazing though! Might be my favorite port of all.
Avalanche Reviews ops lol i just commented the same thing haha. Hmm maybe add a comment on here so itll show up in the top comments ☺ yeah the dualshock Ver is awful. Directors Cut is fine. ^,_,^
the best versions of resident evil 1 are the ORIGINAL director's cut (NOT the dualshock edition) & the pc version. for those who aren't aware of the exclusive features of resident evil 1, in the pc version, if you beat the game less than 3 hours, you will unlock an fn minimi for chris & an uzi for jill. i recommend you should try the pc version
I find its much more complex then that there are truly truly fantastic games coming out now but they don't get talked about try va-11hall-a its a vn but with light game play fantastic writing and brain teaser orders all wrapped in a pc98 coating and it truely captures the soul of what it wants to be.
As someone with enough questionable taste to have been in the dregs of the countless cannibal/zombie clones, no-budget gialli and horny gill-men flicks to confirm your statement, I wholeheartedly agree.
"Over the next couple weeks" 3 years later still adding to the series. Thanks for the hard work man these retrospectives are some of the best of their kind.
I didn't have a Playstation or any other system when I was young, so I would go to a place in my town where you would pay $0.25 to play for a half hour. They had 2 super Nintendo and 2 Playstation systems with various games to choose from. I remember leaving the school one day and in one of the Playstation system was a group of people watching someone play a new game, so I got curious and there it was, the original Resident Evil being played and everyone was terrified (specially the player), so when he got into the hall where the dogs jumps through the windows everyone jumped including the player, he released the controller letting the dogs kill him. This game blew my mind at the time, I remember how realist it felt, the graphics were amazing and so was the sound (specially if you were used to SNES games). Walking from a concrete floor to carpet to wooden floor made everything more immersive, you really felt you were in the shoes of the characters. The original RE have a special place in my heart and still is my favorite.
Residence of Evil yo its JJ! I hate your channel bro lol jk I love all these RE channels! Residence off evil and avalanche you guys should play re5 coop and just talk about RE, that would be cool
@@AvalancheReviews oh also you made a mistake in the review as you said that all except the original version has the bad music the original ( at least in pal regions I don't know about anywhere else) version of the directors cut where Chris is holding the shotgun still has the original ost. though I got to thank you for introducing me to resident evil
Jared! While they're a LOT of retrospectives on popular serieses such as this, I salute you for putting so much thought, love and care into this video, evident from the very first seconds. Your love for prerendered backgrounds is probably the reason I'm subscribed to you, we're a dying breed.
To get ready for Resident Evil 2 remake I decided to Play the Resident Evil remake on PS4 and I finished it a few days ago. It blew my mind. I love how much of a puzzle game it is. Now I'm playing through the Resident Evil Director's Cut on my PSVita and I'm just about to get into the basement lab. I'm surprised how well I'm playing the game. I'm getting use to the Tank controls and I feel they work really well with the fixed camera angles.
Tank controls are necessary for a fixed camera that changes orientation all the time. You don’t want to be pushing right then the camera angle changes and you’re going left for instance.
Slurry Noises I can understand, as the enemies in Silent Hill 1-3 sometimes make people too scared to continue those fantastic games. ESPECIALLY SH3 WITH THOSE DAMN SLURPERS! The memory of their cruelty is forever burned into my mind. "Yes, yes. And that's why we need God!"
unlocking Forest is far worse, you can't even shoot him haha. i deleted my progress, used the grenade launcher trick and made sure to beat it udner 3 hours to unlock everything, so i wouldn't have to deal with him
This was the first video game I felt weird playing around my parents and waited until they were gone to the grocery store to play XD To this day, the original ps1 game is my favorite. This is the only one that carries the mystery and tension of “what is going on?!”. Later you know that it’s the T-Virus/Umbrella, etc. I think the best fear factor comes with this one! Love the video Jared!
Can you believe it? When I was just a small kid in 90s, I though this mansion was cursed and the game itself is a curse lyric and zombies will pop up in your home. Shivered my spine
@@GQ1123ja Ever watch any of Bawkbasoup's videos? He speed runs RE titles, he has a new subscriber animation on his streams. A cartoon with edited audio of Barry, he says "I'm gonna kick this Jill Sandwich..." he then boots a cartoon Jill Sandwich and the Richard "Ouch" audio comes from the sandwich while it's flying through the air. It's so damn funny.
For the young fans out there, there was a populare Hardcore band from New York called Biohazard that made their name in the 90s as well. I think that also factored into the name change in America
Man gotta say how enjoyable this series you made was to watch. Resident Evil will always be the best series IMO.....one that definitely sticks out above all other video games in my mind
Looking back, I remember that RE1 was one of the first games my older brother got for the PS1, and probably my first experience with a horror game in general. My first time playing it, I got so freaked out about the first zombie encounter and not knowing how to fight back, I shut the game off (I was a kid after all so I wasn't able to play horror stuff without getting freaked out). It is rather amazing to see how far RE is has come in terms of graphics and the shifts in its core gameplay, but to also hear how RE1 had such an important impact on fellow gamers. Great video as always Jared! Can't wait to see the next ones!
+Daybreaker Rein it really was revolutionary. Even my first time playing it, I knew it was something special. This retrospective is kind of an attempt at expressing how much the series means to me. Thanks man
So, I watched this whole playlist about 6 months ago at least 5 times. It is just really great to throw on while I replay RE2 for the billionth time. But its been about 6 months since I've watched, & so I decided to come back. Somehow, this video & all the ones after it in this playlist are hitting me with MAJOR nostalgia. Not the games, like, the way you made the video. Your narration. The tone. How much passion you clearly have for this legendary series. I'm just surprised at the nostalgia because it's been such a short time, but dude I'm having some major dopamine hits right now while I'm typing this. Right now you're talking about how much you love the campy dialogue lol. Please don't ever stop making videos. I'm off to rewatch pretty much everything you've ever made for that NOSTALGIA
FYI the Lisa Trevor part in the remake was initially intended for the original RE, however due to graphical limitations the character (& supporting lore) was scrapped. So actually adding that part makes the reboot a more authentic experience. On the bright side I love these "REtrospective" videos! I just keep coming back to them, very well done!!👍🏻
And finally I have made it through the entire retrospective. I am sad that its over, it is such a good overview of this series and I cant wait to see what you do next. I just noticed you cover Parasite Eve, so ill definitely be watching that. I would love to see a Dino Crisis retrospective (despite it being a short lived franchise) as those were great too....not RE great, but great. Its too bad they didnt make more
Thanks man! I'm glad you got a kick out of this project. Don't you worry, I am 100% looking to do a Dino Crisis retrospective in the future. I fell in love with the second game, back when I was a teen, so it'll be cool as hell going back to the series.
I agree with everything you said about the game, it was truly groundbreaking at the time when "cinematic" in games was pretty much a few cutscenes or an anomaly like Alone in the Dark or Flashback/Another World, most games were little more than random environments thrown together with threadbare story to hold it together. RE completely incorporated the story into the entire purpose of it's world, with photorealistic backgrounds, little documents that slowly revealed what was happening in the mansion and its limited resources encouraging you to explore every nook and cranny. Even things we take for granted today like all the animations of the enemies and characters including the sheer amount of voice acting that brought these pixelated characters to life was incredibly new and technically challenging at the time. All this in 1996 when 3D games on console were still extremely new and experimental. REmake still having the best looking pre-rendered backgrounds to this day from 2002 is a testament to the incredible art and lighting of the teams working on classic RE.
It really did change things for the rest of video game history. At the time, games were still struggling to do full 3d, and the concessions made to make this game work, are responsible for creating a whole new genre. I love every minute of RE1
My friends hate the tank controls, but they dont understand like you do. I also want to add something about the sound/music design: sometimes its the LACK of a soundtrack that really drives up the creepyness. Truly a MASTERPIECE best enjoyed on a playstation 1 with the lights off at night!
These are some of the most well done retrospectives of my favorite all time series I've seen in a long time on here! The amount of time, effort, respect, and love is certainly felt when watching these awesome Resident Evil videos you made man! One my fellow friends in the Resident Evil community who has a great RE channel mentioned your videos in a post! He said they were fantastic & he was right! I love watching videos like this about my favorite series especially from a fan such as yourself who clearly loves this series as we all do! It's a series that means more to me than I have the words to describe & changed my life for the better! It's near & dear to my survival-horror loving heart so thank you so much for taking time to make these man! Keep up the great work! I I watched one and instantly Subscribed as well! 😎👍🏻 Distant Memories 1996 Christopher "Redfield96"
Wow....... That's fucking great to hear!! I love this series, and having a fellow RE fan compliment it like this, means a hell of a lot. Seriously, thank you.
its been so long since i played the original RE, i don't remember much about it other than the famous jill sandwitch scene and the first zombie scene. the gamecube remake and 0 were incredible.i think the additions of crimson heads was a great idea. a change that helped unsettle veterans of the original. like like how the "dog hallway" was changed. some call it subverting expectations :3
The soundtrack can't be undersold. When I first scored a copy on PC back in '96 my sister had done something to the computer and disabled the soundcard. It took me a while to figure out how to get it going again, and during that time playing RE I had pretty "meh" feelings about the atomsphere. Get the sound back on, and holy crap it was so much creepier, and defintely ratcheted the game up several appreciated notches.
If I had to choose 1 game that I could only play for the remainder of my life. Without question, RE 1996 is that game. Hands down my favorite game of all time.
"Get ready to enter the world of Survival Horror" I see what you did there. Amazing video. To this day, this is still one of my favorite RE ever. And the only one where the USA title makes sense lol
@@loganjorgensen I owned the Dualshock for years before trying any other version, and I wouldn't have it any other way (unless I had the chance to play the Saturn version with Battle Mode) since the original soundtrack is pretty common. Actually, in Deadly Silence, which was unique enough to try on its own, I felt myself missing some of the absolutely epic Dualshock themes. For example, I prefer Dualshock Tyrant's themes, all of the mansion themes including the picture puzzle and dead Forest theme, the charming save room theme (both are great tbh), sometimes I even miss the clown farting basement theme, I kid you not. The alternative is almost kinda boring in a lot of aspects. The extra weird themes of Dualshock add to the experience, and since you basically have to play Remake anyways, it's like a win-win so you hear everything.
@@Goblin_Hands Nice to get some thoughts on the versions. Got an OG copy of RE now but kept DC since the trade-in value wasn't much. Yeah the clown farts are quite off-putting. ^_^ Need to get an AR cart still but I went and got a JP-SS copy since it's semi-English friendly and NA copies are crazy priced. Missed the whole survival horror run the first time around so been going through titles in the RE Clone series. I like collecting but some of them I just went straight to emulation lol. Like to give the DS one a go on real hardware though because of the touch screen parts. ;)
Awesome! really looking forward to your next review. Never played resident evil (and only actually played it 2years ago) on its release, since I was to little and I was scared as hell by it. But hearing people talk about it and actually see the game being played is still something that I look back fondly at. :)
This is an excellent retrospective! Your point about tank controls is really spot on, they were chosen mainly because analog control didn't exist at the time, but also they tend to offer an advantage when cinematic camera angles are used. Analog control can be a bit disorienting when you're trying to move in one direction and the camera angle suddenly changes. I'm also really glad you put emphasis on how good that soundtrack was! People underestimate just how good the RE1 soundtrack was, it's possibly still the best in the series, with RE2 being the other major contender. Amazing game, and although the remake is also amazing, people shouldn't let that stop them from appreciating the original!
I've been a fan of the series since the beginning. My first exposure to this game was when my older brother rented it at my local video rental store. I had never played anything so stressful before. Ammo preservation was a nightmare, initially. Over time, I became skilled in dodging enemies and having a large ammo supply made me feel accomplished. Many years later I got a hold of the elusive Sega Saturn version. I was pleasantly surprised to.see the game mostly intact, with the exception of some rough character models
what a happy coincidence, i just dusted off my copy of resident evil 0 on gamecube since ive had it for years and never completed it, and on the same day i get the start of a series retrospective from one of my favorite review channels
So glad I found this playlist! Great video! I’m a little surprised you don’t have a full video addressing the remake for Game Cube (and subsequent HD release) given how significantly it updates the games and lore. Any plans to analyze this game a little further?
Great retrospective 👍. I have been binging the whole retrospective series and thanks to you I have fallen in love with the resident evil series (have since played a few already) (im a new comer). Just out of curiososity: would you like to see this game (resident evil 1 re) being remaked in the same way resident evil 2 is being remaked?
I am so glad you're doing this retrospective! I'm glad you mentioned the remake, too. As far as overall quality, the game has rarely been topped, it's amazing how impressive it still is. Also, even if the Patreon goal doesn't get met, I personally think you should also cover Code Veronica in addition to the numbered titles. It was intended to be Resident Evil 3, after all. Even if you choose not to, I am seriously excited for this retrospective :D
+Micaiah the Otaku Gamer [HybridAngelZero] thanks man! I'm super stoked to get this thing up and running. As for code veronica, let's just say......... it'll have its day.....
I love this game, even more than the remake. RE2 comes very close but this is definitely my favourite. The zombies are deadly (two bites can send you straight to Danger), ammo is limited, is has a great atmosphere, music, level design, the single estate setting, etc. Then when the Hunters take over, it still scares me even now and I am sent into a panic. A must play. Excellent video!
Thanks! I go back and forth between this and 2 being my favorites. They're both incredible, but I think part 1 is a little more lonely and dark. Such a damn good game!
Me: "Hey mom, can you unlock the door so I can go inside?" *mom tosses me the keys* Mom: "Here you can unlock it. You, the master of unlocking, should handle that." Me: "Um... okay..?"
Oh man. I remember playing the first RE at a friend's house back in early teen years. That game made me save up for a PlayStation. Good times. Nice video. I look forward to part 2.
It's not really opinion why tank controls work in a static camera angle view system, most people that complain don't seem to fully understand how 2D backgrounds operate, as soon as they get it the complaints tend to end. Some games have given them the multi-directional controls they asked for and the consequence of that is a character that can't run in a straight line and a player constantly adjusting to what "Up" means, especially weird in those full 3D but static angle still games. Strangely not mentioned for this type of game engine often is polygonal concentration, while not as high as 1 on 1 fighting games the poly counts get pretty high when the background is 2D. For comparison I kind of wish Code Veronica on DC had done the GC remake approach, could have had characters closer to the DOA range of poly count.
This is the only Resident Evil game to have live actors (beginning and ending), while the rest of Resident Evil used characters there were only computer generated all the way Along with the remake, this is the only Resident Evil" to feature a "best-case-scenario" ending which does not elude to a possible sequel or spin-off and suggests that "everything is finally over". The reason for this is possibly because the company was uncertain how well the game would be received, so this game could stand on its own story-wise if it failed economically. The only real difference between the original and the director's cut is the ability to choose what difficulty you want to play, and different camera angle and item places in the Advance game. Although the genre was not entirely new, this was the first game to use and coin the term "survival horror". The game series has worldwide sales of more than 100 million copies as of 2020. Despite voicing the English dub, all the voice actors were not native English speakers. They were living in Japan at the time.
I was 8 and my friends 11-12 when this came out. We started playing early morning on a weekend. At noon we had to pause for lunch. I rode my bike so fast home, came back, only to discover my older friends already started playing without me. I missed out on the whole garden/outhouse area. I was so pissed but kept my mouth shut. Childhood🍻
My brother had a similar experience. We were stuck in the sewers, and I figured out where to go, while he was at a friend's house. Memories like that, is why I still play these games.
Avalanche Reviews is that the cave part from the original game, or the Sewers from RE2? Because I’ve heard a few people call the caves from RE1 ‘Sewers’. :)
When this game came out I was in like 5th grade and my much older brother had a PS1 in his bedroom (in the basement) and he wouldn't let me play so I would have to sneak down there by myself when he was gone and I couldn't get past the first zombie because I was too scared lol. This game made a huge impact on me and I will always love it.
I love restarting this series, I kinda wish he would go back to the first couple of videos only if he feels he could add more of his own dialogue and make them longer like later videos, I really enjoy his videos and Sphere Hunter!
Yah i remember these old times when my dad was playing re1,2,3 and my mom, sister was watching, together we were solving puzzles, ofc its not only with resident evil, but also tomb raider, silent hill, parasite eve, good old days.
I was first exposed to this gem while in Navy training school in 1996. 22 years later and this game still holds many of my favorite moments! Even with the god awful VO, I was hooked. Dark, haunting, good story, nice plot twist, puzzle solving, effective item management. I really can’t think of things I don’t like about it when I consider the state of the industry at the time of its release. The Remake was flawless in its intent and execution and has aged like the finest wine!
Holy shit, was there ALWAYS a misspelling on the newspaper in the opening cutscene of RE?! I'm mind blown I'd never caught that. A great look at an absolute classic. I agree that people should play this one THEN the remake and not the other way around.
+Dongled Ha! I didn't even notice that. Good eye. Yeah man, you definitely have to know where the game started, before you can appreciate how far the remake took it.
If anyone's visiting this video anymore keep in mind the Director's Cut includes the ORIGINAL soundtrack, the DC Dualshock is the rearranged soundtrack, so if you have the Director's Cut (Not Dualshock) then you're still good.
Lucky me, I guess never had any issues with tank controls. Never heard anyone who had issue with them either in my childhood. Considering I just replayed most of RE games; can say that RE1 remake is the best RE game overall and I specifically left tank controls as they were much easier to orient under fixed camera angles than direct direction. Have to agree that crimson heads and Lisa Trevor were a hard pitch to sell to me. Just accepted them as something different, not really against the idea, but it would be perfectly fine without them, too.
I will say that I will fallback to the RE1 psx version more often then the gc remake. I even have it on steam and I like to play it but never get around to it. This was well done and you put a lot of thought in this. Well done. the Resident Evil Series is something I'll fall back to playing and I'll play all the numbered games even the 6. however I can't find myself playing 7 maybe one day but for now 2 and 4 will keep me going. I look forward to seeing the other vids when you get around to them a nice way to post for October. Keep up the good work Jared.
+Leon0000 thanks man. I have to say, 2 is probable my absolute favorite, but 1 is definitely 2nd best. I love the remake, but I think you're right. The original is the best fallback.
That's pretty much the only reason I got a GC haha The GC turned out to be my most played console at the time. There was nothing better than 4 controller ports and some fun VS games.
Looking forward to this retrospective! I am honestly quite terrible at survival horror and will often throw in the towel quite early. Resident Evil and RE3:Nemesis were the only two.I managed to complete XD I have picked up four again but I'm not sure I want to play beyond that
+Nosey Karrrott Hopefully this retrospective can change that, or at least make it feel like you played them. I pretty much came up with this idea for people like you, who might not have played all these awesome games.
Loved this whole series you have created. I am new* to the series. Started with RE:4 but really want to backtrack after the release of RE:2. What would you recommend as the play order on PC? Thanks again and exceptionally well done!
I'm very late to the party, but I personally would go through the whole series in the release order. Yes, this means the OG RE1, OG RE2, OG RE3, Code Veronica, REmake, Zero, 4 ... ...and probably just stop there. Unfortunately unless you are rich & lucky enough to find the original discs, going all yarr harr on the internet's seas and acquiring the "Source-Next" PC ports is perhaps the only way to experience the classics on a PC here and now. Or you could hunt down the PS1 discs' rips and emulate them.
I watched your series as it stands and as a surprise to no one you're a rabid fanboy. That's not a bad thing though, I got into the series at 4 when that came outthough I was aware Resident Evil existed long before that but the passion you talk about the earlier entries I went back and gave them a try. It had been the tank controls, pre rendered backgrounds and item management that put me off. To say that I got an enjoyable experience from this is understatement. Your nuanced appreciation and passion for these games gained a new fan. So thank you, it seems like this might have been your goal along in making this series, I wanted to let you know you succeeded.
RE1 remake was also the reason I bought a GC, such a great remake. Not seen any remakes of any video games come this close to perfection. You shouldn't have shown the HD remake of RE1 remake to illustrate the 0riginal Remake of 2002 though.
Resident Evil had such an impact on me that I find myself quoting the game every chance I get. Like dramatically shouting "Weskeerrrr!" whenever possible

Nope everything is just orchestral now

I actually really loved the Crimson heads and Lisa Trevor monsters in the remake. They added tension and intensity to the experience and made the game more scarier than it should've been.
The definitely added tension and scares, but I feel like the tension of scares were supposed to come from the atmosphere. I feel like Mikami was trying to incorporate jump scares into the gameplay, with the crimson heads.

Avalanche Reviews The standard issue handgun of the RPD was probably the Browning Hi-Power, as it was the gun Claire got from that RPD car's glove compartment. The M9 / Samurai Edge was used only by the S.T.A.R.S team.
S.T.A.R.S were financially supported by Umbrella, they wanted to give them these weapons just to gather battle data information on the B.O.W's.
well... before the outbreak at least.
Great video, but one small correction:
ONLY the Director's Cut - Dual Shock Edition has the notorious new soundtrack.
Avalanche Reviews it sure is my favorite. got me into this amazing series
the european pal version on psn is ok, with proper original ost, while usa and probably japan ntsc in not.
the best versions of resident evil 1 are the ORIGINAL director's cut (NOT the dualshock edition) & the pc version. for those who aren't aware of the exclusive features of resident evil 1, in the pc version, if you beat the game less than 3 hours, you will unlock an fn minimi for chris & an uzi for jill. i recommend you should try the pc version
Resident Evil 1 is like an italian horror movie: crappy effects, great atmosphere and cheesy dialogue.
Fun games man: fewer every day.
+kisham this is one hundred percent accurate
I find its much more complex then that there are truly truly fantastic games coming out now but they don't get talked about try va-11hall-a its a vn but with light game play fantastic writing and brain teaser orders all wrapped in a pc98 coating and it truely captures the soul of what it wants to be.
Italian horror is a thing?
As someone with enough questionable taste to have been in the dregs of the countless cannibal/zombie clones, no-budget gialli and horny gill-men flicks to confirm your statement, I wholeheartedly agree.
Gino Gatash Absolutely. Some the best.
"Over the next couple weeks"
3 years later still adding to the series.
Despite voicing the English dub, all the voice actors were not native English speakers. They were living in Japan at the time.
Another fantastic video! Great job again 👍🏻
Many thanks. This retrospective has been a blast to work on so far, so it's good to see people getting into it.
Residence of Evil yo its JJ! I hate your channel bro lol jk I love all these RE channels! Residence off evil and avalanche you guys should play re5 coop and just talk about RE, that would be cool
Why do Americans say "smack Dab"
@@AvalancheReviews your phone was picked up by your microphone 😆. But great job I loved the review
You, as a master of unlocking, should take this. Also, "You were almost a Jill Sandwich!" "Don't open that door!"
Jared! While they're a LOT of retrospectives on popular serieses such as this, I salute you for putting so much thought, love and care into this video, evident from the very first seconds. Your love for prerendered backgrounds is probably the reason I'm subscribed to you, we're a dying breed.
+Cheappy V it does me good to hear people appreciating the work I put into this. I'm happy to be a fellow pre rendered background lover!
RE2 remake has some puzzles in it but Remake is literally a massive puzzle lol
Tank controls are necessary for a fixed camera that changes orientation all the time. You don’t want to be pushing right then the camera angle changes and you’re going left for instance.
Back a year later to re-watch this entire Playlist again..! ✌️👽
those crimson heads are the only thing keeping me from playing REmake lol... damn things scare the hell out of me
Especially when you forget about them, and they jump up off the ground.
Slurry Noises I can understand, as the enemies in Silent Hill 1-3 sometimes make people too scared to continue those fantastic games. ESPECIALLY SH3 WITH THOSE DAMN SLURPERS! The memory of their cruelty is forever burned into my mind. "Yes, yes. And that's why we need God!"
unlocking Forest is far worse, you can't even shoot him haha. i deleted my progress, used the grenade launcher trick and made sure to beat it udner 3 hours to unlock everything, so i wouldn't have to deal with him
Time for my yearly watch of the entire Resident Evil retrospective!
I thought it was just me lol this is a fantastic series
This was the first video game I felt weird playing around my parents and waited until they were gone to the grocery store to play XD To this day, the original ps1 game is my favorite. This is the only one that carries the mystery and tension of “what is going on?!”. Later you know that it’s the T-Virus/Umbrella, etc. I think the best fear factor comes with this one! Love the video Jared!
+1981mag Ha! That's such an accurate way to explain things! Your right though, the mystery was a its best in the first one. Thanks for the love!
Yeah! The mystery...surprisingly, I had no idea Wesker would turn traitor.
The biggest fear factor comes with the first blind playthrough
Can you believe it? When I was just a small kid in 90s, I though this mansion was cursed and the game itself is a curse lyric and zombies will pop up in your home.
Shivered my spine
Guy riddled with holes and blood.
Guy: "Ouch."
Girl: "You're wounded!"
Guy: "... .... ..... yes, ma'am."
+James Russell it's like a more pure form of poetry.
You should have heard what he said immediately beforehand. About how the mansion is full of TERRIBLE DEMONS...then he says "Ouch."
Lol that ouch is so epic
@@GQ1123ja Ever watch any of Bawkbasoup's videos? He speed runs RE titles, he has a new subscriber animation on his streams. A cartoon with edited audio of Barry, he says "I'm gonna kick this Jill Sandwich..." he then boots a cartoon Jill Sandwich and the Richard "Ouch" audio comes from the sandwich while it's flying through the air. It's so damn funny.
brings back so many great memories from my childhood.
For the young fans out there, there was a populare Hardcore band from New York called Biohazard that made their name in the 90s as well. I think that also factored into the name change in America
I want to live in the mansion. But no zombies though. Only if they’re nice vegetarians. 🙂
What about the traps
@@Neotokyovibes-WelcomeHome oh crap I forgot about those.
Man gotta say how enjoyable this series you made was to watch. Resident Evil will always be the best series IMO.....one that definitely sticks out above all other video games in my mind
Very happy to have provided a little RE themed entertainment. I love this series, and it makes me smile that people like me are really enjoying it.
Now don't forget Barry Burton's, PhD, words of wisdom.
What is this?
A dining room.
Blood
You were almost a Jill Sandwich.
Home is where the heart is..We all grew up in the Spencer Mansion.
I love seeing any video where somebody just nerding out on their passion it's contagious and you can feel it through the screen
I like every main entry in the series for their own unique reasons. I love a series that can do that for me.
The first Director's Cut Edition also came with the original OST. Only the Dual Shock Edition had the other OST (with the infamous basement song)
Great video man!!! Loving the retrospective! You remind me of myself in a lot of ways when it comes to your love for these games.
Fuck yeah! Thank you!
"If I were to talk about every single port, we'd be here forever"
Lotus Prince: "hold my beer"
"Ouch!"
That line always cracks me up.
The original still my favorite game, it just blew my mind back then.
Same
My friends hate the tank controls, but they dont understand like you do.
I also want to add something about the sound/music design: sometimes its the LACK of a soundtrack that really drives up the creepyness.
Truly a MASTERPIECE best enjoyed on a playstation 1 with the lights off at night!
It's so comforting that I wasn't the only one so affected by one series and one game in particular. Great job.

Wow....... That's fucking great to hear!! I love this series, and having a fellow RE fan compliment it like this, means a hell of a lot. Seriously, thank you.
Dude your retrospectives are like a trip down memory lane and Im loving have found these.
I got to give you props for playing the game on original hardware, it's something that reviewers rarely do, I appreciate it man.
I remember playing this game at like 6 years old and I was terrified as hell.... Good times man...
Looking forward to this series of all the resident evil coverage. These are some well done retrospectives and this was one was good
I could listen to you chat about this series for hours on end. Lucky for me there are plenty more RE vids to get through on your channel!
its been so long since i played the original RE, i don't remember much about it other than the famous jill sandwitch scene and the first zombie scene.
the gamecube remake and 0 were incredible.i think the additions of crimson heads was a great idea. a change that helped unsettle veterans of the original. like like how the "dog hallway" was changed.
some call it subverting expectations :3
I am so addicted to this series.
Absolutely fantastic.
Made me a fan of you.
Can't wait to see more
Thanks man!!! Glad you like it!
so sad I've watched all the episodes and only 2 to go.
But I'm rewatching this one and likely some more.
It's so good
The soundtrack can't be undersold.
I loved this series so much I’m rewatching it again hahahahaha please don’t stop making content
If I had to choose 1 game that I could only play for the remainder of my life. Without question, RE 1996 is that game. Hands down my favorite game of all time.
Your not the only one! Cheers to that!
Playing again and it’s still amazing!
Same! Finished the Jill campaign yesterday. For the 30th time :) Always on PSX.
Itchy. Tasty. Haha nice user name! Just after “Ugly face, so killed him” 😂 I played it on repeat in 96/97 😃
Will you be doing a Silent Hill or Clock Tower Retrospective?
+BouncingblueSoul Sterry You can count on a silent hill retrospective, but I've only ever played bits and pieces of the clock tower games.
didn't you make a video about silent hill already? Or maybe it was just about Silent Hill 3 :3
"Get ready to enter the world of Survival Horror"
I see what you did there.
Amazing video. To this day, this is still one of my favorite RE ever. And the only one where the USA title makes sense lol
It's actually just the Duel Shock Directors Cut virsion that has the alternate soundtrack.
+Roudansk Alamir really? I always thought the directors cut had it as well. Damn
Shit, I bought the worst version. :( Oh well, still funny in a terrible way that music.
Need to get an AR cart still but I went and got a JP-SS copy since it's semi-English friendly and NA copies are crazy priced.
+Salix Fatuus that's exactly why I made this. I'm glad you liked it.
Absolutely man! The soundtrack for RE 1 and 2 are some of the most memorable on the console.
Thanks for the love!
OMG, me too! Resident Evil 1's Gamecube remake was the only reason I bought a Gamecube! I own that and Zero.
what a happy coincidence, i just dusted off my copy of resident evil 0 on gamecube since ive had it for years and never completed it, and on the same day i get the start of a series retrospective from one of my favorite review channels
+Hertz great minds think alike!
So glad I found this playlist! Great video! I’m a little surprised you don’t have a full video addressing the remake for Game Cube (and subsequent HD release) given how significantly it updates the games and lore. Any plans to analyze this game a little further?
Funny you mention that. I may or may not be working on something like that right now.
This is such a good, juicy playlist to throw on
I love this review resident evil is my favorite video game series of all time and you really put your heart in it good job man
+You The onee I'm glad people can tell that I put my heart into these videos. Thanks man
Great retrospective 👍. I have been binging the whole retrospective series and thanks to you I have fallen in love with the resident evil series (have since played a few already) (im a new comer). Just out of curiososity: would you like to see this game (resident evil 1 re) being remaked in the same way resident evil 2 is being remaked?
You need to redo all the retrospective videos and dive even deeper👍 great vids. Love rewatching them.
I'm so happy to have found someone who loves these games as much as I do. Classic RE for the win!
Oh yeah! The classic games are some of the best games I have ever played in my life, no doubt about it.
I miss the 90s. ☹
This was the game my cousin/brother and I played the night we moved from 1999 to 2000. I remember it fondly.
Me: "Hey mom, can you unlock the door so I can go inside?"
*mom tosses me the keys*
Mom: "Here you can unlock it. You, the master of unlocking, should handle that."
Me: "Um... okay..?"
Oh man. I remember playing the first RE at a friend's house back in early teen years. That game made me save up for a PlayStation. Good times.
Nice video. I look forward to part 2.
Thanks man! Happy to bring back some good memories.
This is the only Resident Evil game to have live actors (beginning and ending), while the rest of Resident Evil used characters there were only computer generated all the way
Along with the remake, this is the only Resident Evil" to feature a "best-case-scenario" ending which does not elude to a possible sequel or spin-off and suggests that "everything is finally over".
I love stories like this! I have a million of my own.
Playing RE1 in the basement seems like a fun idea.
And thus, the greatest Resident Evil series on the internet was born..! 🧟♀️
Let it go down in history
@@AvalancheReviews
Nah man, I want you goin' up in history, not down..! ✊
One of the best videogames ever, if only for the atmosphere, music, themes... and making and releasing it just in the right time.
Whats the name of the song in the intro...its so beautiful
I can't believe he didn't talk about the best port of this, RE: Deadly Silence, I was wanting to hear what he thought about it.
The production quality on this videos is insane...
I´ll never forget the "I GOT A SHOTGUN!" part of Chris´ intro in DC
Fun fact, I had a copy of RE1 that I used to play in my ps1 that was called Bio Hazard, not only in the cover of the CD, but also in the intro
That's pretty much the only reason I got a GC haha The GC turned out to be my most played console at the time. There was nothing better than 4 controller ports and some fun VS games.
RewindMike apparently many people did. Nintendo should be more thankful to Capcom!
The big N probably paid for the exclusives, they've ALWAYS been good at that lol
+RewindMike they're were some gems, but I don't get into a majority of gc games. The controller was great though.
Ah... RE1. The memories.... or rather memory. Saw my first zombie, turned off the ps. Never went back.
+Kale Serpent ha! That's an understandable reaction.
"thanks for sticking around for this long-winded rant session"
im here wanting a longer video lol
Well you're in luck. My most recent videos are in the 40min range.
This takes me way back, you sir have just earned a subscriber.
+Tyrant much appreciated man
7:20 you say the word pop at like the same time the zombies head is blown off and I love it😂
I watched your series as it stands and as a surprise to no one you're a rabid fanboy.
I think I'm going to do a full video on REmake and I'll compare it to the original. A lot of people have been requesting it.
Resident Evil had such an impact on me that I find myself quoting the game every chance I get. Like dramatically shouting "Weskeerrrr!" whenever possible
If there is a better review series on TH-cam I haven't seen it
