At least Richard's voice acting was 1000% better than the original. Wesker wasn't quite as pathetic a villain either since they got rid of his "hey.. Stop it.." to Chris' laughter at his deluded plan.
@@AvalancheReviews that's true. I do have a thing for good voice acting, since that's kindof my dream still. Of course my guilty pleasure is listening to awful voice work, and then trying how to do it better.
Looking back and looking at them side by side, it's hard to imagine that the original RE and the remake were separated by just a single console generation...it's perhaps the greatest example of just how drastic the leaps in technology could be back then in regards to hardware upgrades...these days, not much difference, at least graphically. Like you and many others, I still think this game looks absolutely gorgeous even today...it just creates the perfect look for what it is. I want a Doctor Hauzer remake done in that style. Anyway, loving these videos man, glad to see they're getting the attention they deserve. Also, marry me Jared for #1 sexy time. Jocyne doesn't have to know.
@@suppaman12 a PS2 hardware based remake at that time would had a significant downgrade and limitations, PS2 hardware was less powerful than the h/w GC had and GC got less powerful h/w than the OG XBOX. The sucess of the PS2 as the ultimate winner of that era of game consoles was that even if the H/W was inferior, it had a lot of back up from third parties, sony being more approachable as a company that devs could try the games they wanted to release, the code being a lot more dev friendly and it ultimately result in a huge game library (with most of the game titles being average to great) and for that matters, in a more well round library with a lot of different genres; it also helped that most of this titles were friendly to the japanese market and the ever increasing public demand almost everywhere for said titles; it's still a great console to play good jrpgs and more obscure games.
What I love most about REmake is how, while it's a fantastic game on its own right, it really becomes a masterpiece when you go into it after becoming intimately familiar with the original. The way it plays with returning players' expectations while still remaining faithful to the original is nothing short of genius. It's still the absolute gold standard for remakes IMO.
Yes! This is 100% true. I think that's why it meant so much to me. It really does mess with your expectations, if you've become crazy familiar with the original.
prerendered backgrounds. i really wish they had remade re2 and 3 like this back on the gamecube, those remakes would have been so much better imo. they would have kept all the areas and added to them, improved on them. they would have improved on the a and b scenarios in 2, rather than just get rid of them like re2r did. they probably would have kept in and improved on the random aspect of re3, where you run into different enemy groups in many locations every time you play the game. i beat re2r twice and i was so bored by the end of that 2nd playthrough i never wanted to look at it again, never got that bored with any other re game. if they had done it like re1 remake, i would have beaten it over a dozen times and still never got bored of it. there's a small area from re2 in re0 and every time i get to that area it makes me want re2 in that engine so bad.
I played this lastyear on my Switch and I loved the moonlit dust in the hallways and the moths swarming around the outside lights. Absolutely beautiful details.
Jack M yeah, gotta agree with you. I love Re2re, and am glad to have played it through 5 times already. But in perfect world I’d love to see a 2d remake of as well. :) Lab was kinda a letdown. :/ Also, if you get bored you should try hardcore.
I'm still floored by how amazing this game still looks to this day. Aside from a bit of "GameCube Glow" on some of the character models, I would totally believe this was a remake that initially launched in 2015. This remake is one of the only ones I can think of that fully outshines its source material.
"Any changes made must serve two goals; improve the realism AND improve the gameplay." That development rule should be the industry gold-standard. Realism in games is great, but only to a point. There is a line where further added realism begins detracting from the actual fun of the gameplay. And at the end of the day, escapism and fun is why we play in the first place. If I wanted my experience to be completely realistic, I'd just go out and do it. The GCN R.E.make was a great example of this done right.
Like how games like Duke Nukem 3D and Shadow Warrior had some relatively realistic parts in it, but mostly was kind of surreal and the maps were made for fun, first, and any sort of realism second.
Depending on the game, I might appreciate some extra realism. Fallout adding handloading spent carterages was nice, I've always thought the Metro games would improve if they took some aspects from their older brother S.T.A.L.K.E.R.
"If I wanted my experience to be completely realistic, I'd just go out and do it." Ahh, yes, why didn't *I* think about going out and killing zombies while solving puzzles for real?
I agree. And after playing RE2 remake now, I thought about this balance. And this line with the realism detracting from the fun of the gameplay, is exactly how I felt playing it... Great game in itself. But it's oversimplified story wise, takes itself too seriously. And although it looks great, I think the realism did detract from the actual fun of the gameplay imo. And yeah, REmake done this right. Best RE imo.
My Africa-originating brother! CHRISTHISWAY literally became a meme for a looong while between me and my buddies after they played the game. It still pops up randomly in our chatter.
Resident Evil, particularly the older titles, have always been like a puzzle box to me and I've never thought of them any other way. Describing the games as essentially one giant, interconnected, convoluted but well thought out puzzle wouldn't be far from the truth at all.
I had this on the cube at launch and was obsessed. It really did look above and beyond ANYTHING back then. Add to that - my parents who were in their 50's at the time would regularly sit down and watch the gameplay for entire stretches just from being drawn in over the style and the vibe it oozed. It really got people's attention.
Survival Horror games are high-concept puzzles in every way. Enemies are part of an equation where; (a-b)/c=x a=Resources b=Danger c=Player Choice x= Survival
are you factoring the horror aspects as part of danger. Theres survival games that have danger without horror as all the players danger really is is character death and manual saves can make the character death more impactful if you forget to save. That is what RE's proper survival horror instalments have gotten perfect, the balance of horrific imagery. makes RE enjoyable rather than a rage fest in the mould of Dark Souls and such, and also sets it apart from survival games like Ark and others in that ilk were its scarce resources and perma death and not graphic violence and grotesque, visceral imagery
clownavenger True. Sometimes I think they develop games just for the sake of testing trendings among gamers. That’s what I felt about RE 7. It was a good game but so far I think it was an experiment to test the new RE engine. Cheers!
I guess the idea of capcom being an inconsistent game dev company comes by the decisions they would take back at the end of the 2000's and beginning of the 2010's; the problem was the same, they make some games with bad placed dlc's, mobile and web browser based games that ultimately stole many peoples money with ridiculous charge for different items and addons; the matter that some to most of this web and mobile games were aimed at young children, the most well known case was that of a little girl who spend a couple hundred (if not a thousand+) dollars for berries (kinda remember it was a facebook game?). Before that decisions were made, capcom usually was accepted as a good game dev company. It's really sad that they managed to ruin the image they used to had among fans/gamers.
clownavenger they are, but I’m glad that they take risks and don’t play it safe or fuck over their fans like Konami. Silent Hill and Metal Gear will never come back again:(.
Yeah I figured, but since they (zero's backgrounds) were such a higher level of quality, they didn't have to put layers of bluring filters over them. So you get to see how great the background looked in its original form.
I'm just wondering... If for any reason, REmake had landed on PS2, and was a commercial hit instead of a failure. And somehow had more industry wide impact that RE4 has now. I know console exclusively funds games, but man... some games have the potential to change the future.
Base Bass Forte am, do you see the differences between resident evil 4 in game cube and ps2? Its like day and night , and remake is a lot more demanding till this days , even in the newest plataforms re4 run better (60fps) than the remake.
21:33 this isn’t true. They are present on Normal and Hard difficulty. Very Easy was added to the HD version of the game, which removes the naked zombies. I think Easy does as well.
Benzzodude Easy does as well. I only know because I thought the middle option when selecting my difficulty (“not to easy to climb, not to hard”) was normal and the one above was hard. Little did I know I was playing on Easy. Playing with a guide also showed me that there aren’t lab zombies in easy/very easy.
@@somaoni8806 I beat the game thinking the same thing. My stomach dropped when I got an achievement for beating the game on easy mode. It was still challenging though!
I can safely say that Resident Evil Remake is the BEST Resident Evil entry in the entire series. Better than RE2 and RE4. I love RE4 above all RE entries but REmake is a goddamn piece of art mechanically and visually. RE2 and RE4 are gems but REmake is the CROWN in which those gems are planted upon. All hail King REmake!
Blech, REmake is just a cash grab aimed at nostalgia, yes it looks alright, and a few things were tweaked but let’s be honest it’s nothing groundbreaking, RE4 is just as bad if not worse, because the damn thing has been ported to everything under the sun. I love both games but god they are both just irritating
This game is so amazing. I have definitely been playing this game while I wait for RE2 remake. This is the best Resident Evil game in my opinion. Just wish they would have added more dialogue in Chris's story. Code Veronica was another masterpiece as well.
Wow what a great retrospective for this game! 26 minutes with no filler. Your work is amazing dude. I have no clue how you professionally edit these videos so fast.
Avalanche Reviews I’m the same way. I drink like 5 cups a day just to be mildly functional hahaha You’re just being humble. You must have some speedy editing tricks I would imagine
I appreciate that at 3:20 you say Special Tactics And Rescue Squad, and not "Service". As the original game at launch in 1996 they were called Squad, while in later releases (including the Remake) they retconned it to Service (as seen on the back of Chris' vest at 3:39). I never liked the change from Squad to Service and I'm happy you kept with the original term.
wallpaperflembot I think it’s too soon to speak, just because it has OTS camera angle doesn’t necessarily mean it won’t be survival horror, I personally liked RE7 and am excited RE2 REmake is running on the same engine.
@@NEILHIGGINS765 But it legit took the idea of conserving ammo and dodging enemies over killing them from the first game and put it it re7 how was it not survival horror? What is survival horror? Because this youtuber seems to think re7 is infact survival horror like the original games. And even in re2 zombies eat bullets and Mr X cant be killed that's more survival aspect than the original re2
@@NEILHIGGINS765 Combine that with how dark the game as is and you litterally cant and wont see a zombie in the darkness unless your flash light is in the right area. You did watch the gameplay right? I'm sure you did. Camera angle doesnt equal wether something is survival horror not if you meant traditional resident evil sure but this works better given how dark the game is
This game was, is, and will most likely forever be my favorite RE game. I started the series with RE2, but this game is so damn good. My two biggest complaints though are the voice acting/script and the fact that the story isn't completed with two playthroughs (they just kind of overlap each other) As for the issue with cutscenes on the GameCube, I remember being annoyed by that when it first released, and it's weird because I only remember those issues in Jill's playthrough. I don't remember the freezing in any of Chris's playthrough. The first video of yours I watched was the RE1.5 video and I'm glad to see you've continued to improve and work on this series. Looking forward to the future of this channel. Keep up the good work, I'll be here for the whole ride.
That is a good point. It would have been cool to have the 2 stories, more separate and unique. RE2, really perfected that practice. Glad to see I'm not the only one who thought this game was a close contender for best game in the series. Thanks for the love man! Ever since I started that Patreon, I've been holding myself to a higher standard. I figure now that people are paying for my work, I better give them their money's worth.
It’s unfortunate because the only thing that came closest to having both stories intersect but be separate was the novel by S.D.Perry. That being said, a unique experience I had a few years ago on my pc was playing a fan made game called Resident Evil RPG that basically combined both stories in a unique and interesting way, while adding a lot of their own stuff to it as well, such as expanding the graveyard area and a few areas in the house, and adding a few extra campaigns. I highly recommend getting it if you can find it
Resident Evil RPG you say? I never thought of that but it sounds awesome! While I'm not really an RPG fan, something like XCom's turn based strategy set in the Resident Evil universe would be the bees knees. I suppose anything is better than the survivor games. I really wanted Operation Raccoon City to be good, but the controls and execution were just off. Something along the lines of Operation Raccoon City developed by Naughty Dog would be the ticket!
That talk about RE being a puzzle can be applied to a lot of games really. For example, stealth games are basically puzzle games with different ways to "solve" their "puzzles" by no getting spotted. Play any stealth game from Metal Gear to Deus Ex and you'll see that there is usually always more than one way to do anything and they all work as a way to solve problems.
I've had a few comments saying something similar, and I think that there's some truth there. I think those games rely a little more on skilled gameplay, where RE is more about decision making (at least at the higher difficulty levels). RE has pretty clunk controls, so there's less skill involved after you've wrapped your head around them. At least that's my point of view.
I don't know if anyone said this, so I'll do it. This whole retrospect project is one of the most amazing things I've seen in gaming community. To dedicate yourself on one whole series, for over a year, without dipping in quality of videos or enthusiasm, is commendable beyond simple praise. Your passion and persistence is something I really admire! A big hats off to you sir!
You know, I was kind of skeptical, but I loaded up my Chris save file and played for 20 or so minutes, and yeah, they were right there. I wonder why they did that?
Best retrospective you've made. Couldnt agree more on the game genre. It feels like you spreaded way more effort and energy on this one. Thanks for a great video
@@turnoffthedark268 If you are unfamiliar with tank controls, start with 4, then go remake. If you aren't dissuaded by antiquated controls, go for remake. Keep in mind when you go between that the action is way different between the two games.
Around a month ago I discovered one of your videos. After watching a couple more i really got into the mood of things as i never played a single RE game before. Luckily for me, there was a sale on most of the titles available on xbox one so i picked them all of up 30 ish euros. I had such a blast playing through a couple of them so far therefore thank you so much for bringing my attention to these. I dont know how i managed so long without ever touching a Resident Evil game.
This is the best remake ever! It retains the classic style of the original but adds so much more atmosphere and make something old feel incredibly new and fresh . The graphics to this day are still amazing to look at and is my favorite of the series. The only disappointment is that we've had to wait all this time for a remake of 2 and hopefully 3 down the line
When you called it a puzzle game, the inventory management and "onion-layer" design suddenly reminded me of point and click adventure games like Myst or Maniac Mansion, except with tank controls and guns. And just like that, the entire series clicked in my head. I may actually have a shot at beating this now with that perspective, so thanks for the phrasing.
I will not deny that this is an awesone RE title of the classic series. It always keeps me on my toes every time I play it cause you never know what is gonna happen next. Operation or two, raccoon city......I see where your going next time.
Opening thoughts: I have to agree. This hardline purist approach wont work for every franchise reboot. However considering RE and its fans, mikami made the right call being so strict. I hope REmake2 gets a similar treatment in respects to the changes made. Being; strictly for realism or improving the gameplay experience. Puzzles and mystery were a key part of the og experience. I can accept that branding. While i understand your gripes about some of the perceived graphical issues and agree as much as a layman can. I always chalked it up to kind of being a product of pre rendered. backgrounds
I was so lucky to have played this as a kid when it came out. Now I just finished it again after almost 20 years and I love it just as much, if not more. Perfect game.
my co-worker has never played an RE game before and i recommended this one right here. i figured it was modern enough for him to get into but also had some of that camp that i appreciated from the original trilogy. he ordered it and he seems really excited to dive into it. nice video, avalanche! you always wrap things up nicely
"The crimson heads add a huge level of strategy to the game" I would have said more along the lines of add a huge amount of stress haha. They still freak me out till this day
Absolutely agree with you about classic RE being a giant puzzle game. Every mechanic in the game; the shooting, inventory management, exploration, the actual puzzles, even the story.. are all just pieces to the larger puzzle.
Even the combat. You have to strategically use sparse weapons and ammo. Blow through your stock and leave too many monsters alive, and you'll make the game virtually unwinnable. Like those old text adventure or point and click games, where one wrong move and the game can't be beaten.
@@AvalancheReviews when I was a kid/teen playing them, I knew there was something I liked that went deeper than just the gruesome imagery and killing monsters. I enjoyed all the bits in between as well. Wasn't until I think REmake that i figured it out. That all the pieces compliment each other to make a multilayered puzzle. Something the later games lost sight of.. but came back with 7. But I still enjoyed 4-6. Lol
I'll forever love that oldschool Capcom jingle. Firing up the PS1, hearing it's little jingle before hand. Cemented into my brain forever! It could wake me from a coma lol. REmake is hands down my favorite remake ever made. Also happens to stand the test of time as one of my favorite games ever. Every detail, every new mechanic, such as self defense weapons, which made their way into other games in the series were fantastically implemented. New areas to explore, more story to unravel. What's not to love!? I must have played and beat the game a dozen times the first week it was out alone! I still remember beating the mode with the invisible zombie, rigged with explosives lol. I always went hard with classic RE, even beat Tofu in 2. Nikolai in 3. Just got all the achievements in RE 2 remake. Most games i can't be bothered to challenge myself on that level. Something about RE that gives me added patience. I f'ing love it man.
Lisa's addition is one of my favourite additions to this game. The back story and the idea of she is a young girl that was tortured beyond belief, and now is basically trapped in this shambling body she can't really control, is the essence of re. She was an olinmocent experimented on by umbrella and ended up in a fate worse than death. The fact is, she is like birkin, who also is trapped in the body, just hunting down his daughter
I remember popping this in my gamecube for the first time and being blown the fuck away. I was playing RE since the beginning and this one is still one of, if not, the best.
Resident Evil(especially part 1 (plus remake) and Code Veronica), Elder Scrolls IV:Oblivion, Silent Hill, Onimusha 2 and Legacy of Kain: Blood Omen(1+2) were the most influential games for me back then...! But i also was impressed and very entertained by Jak & Daxter, Devil May Cry, Legend of Zelda-A link to the past and KOTOR 1+2! Good old times and sweet memories...!
@@mateoreyes6921 yeah the first 3 were amazing. I usually give credit to RE2 as one of the games that drew me back into gaming, and I've been playing ever since. Other than the original games and REmake, I'd say I like the last 2 REmakes, Code Veronica, and the Revelations games. Never did care for the numbered entries from RE4 and on. They kinda lost their identity.
Greatest remake of all time and one of the greatest video games ever made. Honestly, the RE remake looks way better than the RE 2 remake; which is basically RE Revelations 3. The visuals and graphics are pure bliss, and the core gameplay and survival horror elements are also quite good. Managed to beat it on Hard mode last year and am thinking of beating it for the 10th time this year.
godofwar2k6reborn i agree. I wish REmake 2 would be like this and not like it is. I love fixed angles and amazing pre rendered graphics. They fucked it up, but i just played the demo its amazing
I'm so glad you went back to cover this entry in detail, because there's just not enough that can be said about how fantastic it is. This is, in my mind, the definitive way to play Resident Evil, bar none, and probably the best entry in the entire series for me, and I tend to be pretty critical of my RE games, like how the QTEs and instakills in RE4 make some parts of the game a joyless experience, or how segments of RE0 that demand character swapping really break up the flow of gameplay and take you out of it a bit. This has got to be the best game remake I've ever witnessed and, as I said, the best game in the series for me at least. I'm sorry that Operation Raccoon City is next, I truly am. Just...please promise me you won't try to put yourself through the hell that is Umbrella Corps, and I say this more for your sake than anyone else's. I mean, I don't know if the servers are even still running now, and if they're not, it's probably best that they stay that way.
This was my first introduction to the Resident Evil series. I remember my dad renting it from Blockbuster of all things way back when haha this game made such an impression on my entire family as we would all watch my dad play it. And we all went down the Resident Evil hole and never went back!
I could talk about this game for hours. I can go on about every RE game, but in my heart I know this is my favourite. On the initial GC release, I would go so mad whenever I entered a room, thought a cutscene was starting and put my controller down, only to realize that, nope, that was just how the game looked. The HD version revealed some more trickery, when I realized there was a save room right before the final boss, that I had COMPLETELY missed when i played the game on GC in 2002. I love this game. It was the first game I ever platinumed on purpose. In fact, since the game is shared across the PS3 and PS4, I might do so again.
@@AvalancheReviews This is correct. Saleswise, REmake and RE4 weren't that far apart on the GC, not until RE4 was ported out to everything and the kitchen sink.
Been waiting on this one, excellent video as always! I've always considered the original RE titles to be something of an old school adventure game within a horror setting.
I remember getting this on Gamecube back in like 2002, and I didn't like it because I thought it was too difficult. Got the Remastered version on Xbox One a couple of years ago, completed it with both characters, (multiple times lol) and now its probably my second favourite RE game after RE 2 :)
Same. Those Crimson Heads made me terrified at my 10 year old age. Played it once through as Jill and that was it, LMAO. Now that I played it on ps4, I platinum'd it and love it.
loved this game. i didn't even know there was a remake of resident evil until the HD version was released. but i bought it and even though my craptop would only run it in super slow motion on the lowest graphical settings, i refused to return it and waited until i got a better one, lol. even now on a newer laptop, it runs in slow motion just a smidge x] when i first saw it i couldn't believe that it was made in 2002. it looks like it came out in 2012 or something. i agree about the voice acting. i thought maybe it just seemed weird to me due to the slo-mo nature of my gameplay, (audio plays normally, video is slow making short, awkward pauses in dialogue) but thinking about it, no, it's actually just not great voice acting.
I know that experience. I actually bought an entire new computer just because re7 was running terribly and i didn't want to have footage with any slow down in it.
that's some dedication. i just had to hope that maybe i would get a better computer in the future. when i first tried it though, i was super confused. i've had games that my computer couldn't handle and were too laggy, and i've had ones that just crash right after startup, but this one was the only game i've had that plays in slow motion.
Sam; look up the REmake HD Slowdown Fix. In short, the game's rendering resolution is stuck at 1440p by default, which obviously is way too much for a toaster-tier laptops. The fix lets you change the render-res to your liking, ie. to 1024x768, thus significantly reducing the stress on the system. My 7yo cheap i3 @ 2.1ghz + GT 540M laptop easily rocks solid 30fps at 720p, High textures / Low shadows + FXAA on, using that fix, and it is still gorgeous.
i will try that next time i feel like playing through it! i mean my current laptop runs it GOOD ENOUGH but it's still annoying xD it's especially noticeable when jill grabs barry's gun. i saw a clip of it on youtube and thought, oh, that looked better... lol
So, that's who Raycevick is. The other day, I noticed I beat his score in a level of Doom 2016s Arcade mode. I stared at his name, right below mine, for a minute wondering why the name "Raycevick" sounded so familiar. "Small world", as they say.
I completely agree with what you said about resident evil being a puzzle game. This was a game that forced you to think strategically about how to approach each enemy and how to manage your inventory. Every decision had implications. I could carry the shotgun with me which will make me safer but that means I have less space in my inventory and if the inventory is full when I find a key item, I may have to retrace my steps forcing me to fight enemies on my way back. This was a fascinating formula for me when I was a kid which is why I got addicted to resident evil.
This video got sent to my subscription list. But you know what is an absolute joke? If you get demonetized on this one. The ad I had is for a game that depicts sexual situations. I mean, there's already strong suspicion that Google simply screws over people they don't like, for example people with center or right leaning ideologies, but having more confirmation is always good.
They screw over everyone. Not just centre- or right-leaning ideologies. They're a corporation and they help out other entities with large amounts of money that can reciprocate the favours later.
I'm sure there's people out there who would burn me at the stake for the following statement, but... I just can't get over that most of the tension in this game (and all "classic" RE entries) is the tank controls and inability to actually aim your weapon. Why does a highly trained, paramilitary SWAT soldier need to aim their shotgun at the ceiling and wait for the shambling undead to walk into the barrel? Are you telling me Chris can't drop the basic zombie type enemies in 2 shots or less when they move at the speed of a broken mall escalator? It just really takes me out of it. Maybe if they were just a couple of regular people, like Harry and James from Silent Hill, stuck in the mansion it wouldn't be such a big deal.
I can suspend my disbelief a bit and let that go. I know that the tank controls were just a limitation and a coping mechanism for dealing with so many wildly different camera angles. They just work in my mind. I never had issues with them, but in the same light, I can understand so people having the opposite issue.
luckily, most of us do not suffer of such shallow immersion. The modern ''horror'' shooters are a prime example of what happens when you overpower players with too good action movesets. Even RE2make is now a bloody TEW clone with HUDs , hint systems and unlimited / autosaves.
That's why I actually accept the third person camera style from Resident Evil 4 and above, if we're police officer, CIA agents, or someone working under some special organization specifically to fight bioterrorism we shouldn't be freezing up experiencing fear and stress especially since we're looking for the problem, and we are the danger.
@@somaoni8806 I'm very since they removed the twobiggest annoyances the classic games are burdened by. Tank controls and the inability to aim your weapons.
I just finished this game. It's the first tanky Resident Evil game I've played since apparently I was not a fan of the older controls, but my god this game is incredible. One of the best games I've ever played in my entire life. It's maybe even better than 4, holy shit this game is good. I was almost in tears at how good this game is after finishing it, easily a 10/10. I even started googling "is RE Remake the best videogame of all time", wow just an incredible experience. Ok gush over
Same but my first tanky re was code Veronica i couldn’t get into it fr but it was alright i started at 4 through 6 then recently bought this and i love it i dare might say i wish the two new remakes were like this
Definitely the ultimate version of the game and probably classic RE as a whole, but it lacks a lot of the unintentional b-movie charm of the original, mostly due to a more advanced lighting engine and the revamped script. There also shouldn't be an option not to use tank controls.
I agree. The modern control option was totally unnecessary. People act like tank controls are too hard to learn, but they're just like learning any other type of controls. No one picked up an FPS, and was perfect at using keaybopard and mouse controls. You just have to invest time into learning.
Your videos have made me a die hard resident evil fan! I bought the origins collection and 4 remasters for PS4 years ago for very cheap at release prolly bout 40 each, never played them, I had been introduced to RE4 at Wii port launch by my best friend and I really enjoyed it, i was too intimidated by the earlier entries they scared me at young ages and I read guides on them and really just felt the games were so scary and the fixed camera turned me off..... until I seen these videos, plopped in my origins collections and beat them both, have yet to play RE2, RE3 & CV but I’m going to purchase CV tomorrow, preorder REmake2, and I’ve gotta say I owe it to you, I’m addicted to this and your perspective and praise has made me realize what I was missing, I love these games and this series and now I feel that the earlier games are way better than 4-7, just so good, thank you man I actually needed this in my life right now as oddly as this sounds resident evil is helping me release my anxiety on something productive and the story is so intriguing it’s great! Thank you so much man! Keep doing reviews, I’d love to see you do a whole MGS series retrospective!
You definitely nailed it with the idea that Survival Horror, and traditional Resident Evil game in general, are really actually puzzle games to their core: the combat itself in the original trilogy was actually very basic and revolved around aiming in the general direction of the enemy and press action repeatedly until the enemy was dead or you had to change position, that and a few particular tactics to take out enemies more efficiently. What made fighting interesting in the old games was that it was part of the greater system of resource and inventory management, and through the way tank controls worked movement itself became something that required a tactical calculated approach to work properly. Everything in those games was about developing strategies about how and when to use resources (when it was convenient to kill enemies and how it was the most efficient way to do so) while the combat was actually pretty mindless if analyzed by itself. The nice thing about RE2 Remake is that it somehow successfully managed to bring back the strategic system of play of the original trilogy (down to the very movement. Even though the game doesn't use tank controls it manages to achieve a very similar feeling, Leon and Claire movement is slow and aim receives maluses if one tries to move and shoot, so the most efficient way to play ends up being something pretty close to what we were seeing with tank controls) while also introducing a deeper combat system that comes with being a third person shooter, yet without compromising the former. RE2 Remake manages to make fighting zombies both a strategic decision related with resource management and an interesting combat experience too thanks to the variety of ways you can decide to fight them. I think that definition of survival horror also kinda highlights how the core of the Resident Evil series doesn't necessarily has something to do with third or first person like you were saying in the episode about RE7: if survival horror is fundamentally a puzzle, why would the puzzle presented through a first person view be invalid? As long as the core of the game remains about the important stuff the point of view shouldn't be that important.
Yo, *mad respect* for the original concept for the game! THIS formula *is* the one that should've have stayed consistent throughout the franchise- It's just, highly unfortunate the infamous CAPCOM exodus included Mikami....
For me re2 remake was good remake in terms of modern age era, personally i would have loved to see with fixed camera and such as original, in other hand re3 remake was bad, very short and bland, lets hope they they remake outbreak series, or continue with outbreak series, as its blast to play it online even today with friends.
@@Krahamus it had ups and downs my biggest gripe of RE2 was that scenario B didn't vary as the original did. So whoever you play in the first act would later differ in the next scenario. Re3, there's at least a huge paragraph so I'll save that for later lol.
YES!!!! thank you for making this one, it is my favorite! i remember being 14 and just got my ps1, i rented resident evil because it had a dude with a gun on the cover...Man was i in for a surprise! i had nightmares but fell in love with it. 2002 i was pissed that i HAD to buy a GC just for this game, but man was it worth it. When the HD Remaster came out in 2015 i never threw down money so fast, still my favorite to this day! i hope re2 remake does the same!
You know, Resident Evil 2 Remake has been my favourite game of all time since its release. In terms of quality of a remake, its almost perfect, but its still not on the level that the Resident Evil HD Remake was.
I definitely agree with you, Resident Evil is a puzzle game. You not only have to solve actual puzzles, but you have to solve the ultimate puzzle which is making it out of a very dangerous situation in which you're trapped in, and find your way back to safety.
I also like your insight with the quality/quirks you’ve found with the original and different ports. Clearly I don’t go that deep into it, but I can still appreciate what I see are accurate assessments.
I remember the REbirth trailer in 2001. Watching it on my brand new DSL at a blazing 20mbps blew my mind. When it came out I played the first 15 minutes and cut it off. It looked too real. GameCube showed they ass with this one
The remake of Resident Evil is a true classic! This game is now 20 years old, and its gameplay and graphics still hold up today! I'd argue the remake remains one of the most beautifully looking games of all time. This remake has aged like a fine Italian wine!
Dude, i really don't understand your gripe with the Lisa character, if anything it made a disturbing plot EVEN MORE DISTURBING. The fact she is concious to a certain degree adds to it even more! The Monster is a victim to bigger monsters and to start with she was only a little girl..... twisted into this abomination.
Played this recently for the first time and I completely agree that the whole game is a type of puzzle, I was put off by the traditional inventory and save slots until I realised it's to be taken as part of the challenge. Great video!
I love your videos, man. You always lose me a little with all the technical stuff about graphics, but not blaming you, I'm just completely ignorant about that stuff. I'm re-playing (and playing some for the first time) the RE franchise in release order so it was great to find your channel.
I never would have thought about the OG RE games being primarily puzzle games but once he said it, I was like “yeah, that was my experience. Puzzles with fear… and a dash of frustration”
This is one of my few games I would give a perfect 10/10. It adds so much to the original game and still looks great.
Couldn't agree more.
Masterpiece 👌
Agreed
@@greasyslav108 true. It is quite lengthy. I didn’t even know there was a laboratory section
It’s not 10/10 though
At least Richard's voice acting was 1000% better than the original. Wesker wasn't quite as pathetic a villain either since they got rid of his "hey.. Stop it.." to Chris' laughter at his deluded plan.
Well to be fair, almost anyone would have been a 100 percent improvement over Richards original actor. Ha!
@@AvalancheReviews that's true. I do have a thing for good voice acting, since that's kindof my dream still. Of course my guilty pleasure is listening to awful voice work, and then trying how to do it better.
I loved when wesker said that line. He is always keeping is cool trough all the game, you don't expect such a reaction from him.
honestly i prefer how pathetic how he was.

You are right about how the graphical leaps between each generation keep getting narrower. It´s the law of diminishing returns
The jump between metal gear solids Potato faces, and mgs2s smoothe anime boys is deff up there for me!
I personally can't wait to see just how much of a difference RE 2 Remake is from original RE2! Just like comparing Origional RE1 ro Remake!
Can you imagine if the ps2 would've done the remake. Or imagine the PS3? HDMI 1080p
GameCube was 480p at best
For some reason the visuals of RE: Remake still blows my mind today.
prerendered backgrounds. i really wish they had remade re2 and 3 like this back on the gamecube, those remakes would have been so much better imo. they would have kept all the areas and added to them, improved on them. they would have improved on the a and b scenarios in 2, rather than just get rid of them like re2r did. they probably would have kept in and improved on the random aspect of re3, where you run into different enemy groups in many locations every time you play the game.
i beat re2r twice and i was so bored by the end of that 2nd playthrough i never wanted to look at it again, never got that bored with any other re game. if they had done it like re1 remake, i would have beaten it over a dozen times and still never got bored of it. there's a small area from re2 in re0 and every time i get to that area it makes me want re2 in that engine so bad.
@Dominic dominic The world doesn't revolve around anyone so what's your point? He was just giving his opinion on the game, it's not that deep.
I played this lastyear on my Switch and I loved the moonlit dust in the hallways and the moths swarming around the outside lights. Absolutely beautiful details.
@Dubz 2020 I mean they are virtually identical except the MO Disk machines
ScottM1 I’m interested in your thoughts on how Re2 was too realistic?
My favorite line in all of Resident Evil is "CHRISTHISWAY!"
Oh yes! That line was hilarious. Just straight out blurted this like it was the final line between the work and the paycheck.
My Africa-originating brother!
CHRISTHISWAY literally became a meme for a looong while between me and my buddies after they played the game. It still pops up randomly in our chatter.
DankWraith when is it said?
@@cheappyv5156 in the intro of Remake.
no. It's gotta be:
O U C H
Resident Evil, particularly the older titles, have always been like a puzzle box to me and I've never thought of them any other way. Describing the games as essentially one giant, interconnected, convoluted but well thought out puzzle wouldn't be far from the truth at all.
Yes! Exactly!!!
It really did. Such an amazing game!
Survival Horror games are high-concept puzzles in every way. Enemies are part of an equation where;
(a-b)/c=x
a=Resources
b=Danger
c=Player Choice
x= Survival
Absolutely! I'm glad a bunch of people are on board with this idea. I was expecting people to call me crazy.
How the fuck did you come up with that equation?
@@ricecake4588 People good at Maths putting their skills to good use

are you factoring the horror aspects as part of danger.
Capcom can be great but they might be the most inconsistent developer in the world.
clownavenger True. Sometimes I think they develop games just for the sake of testing trendings among gamers. That’s what I felt about RE 7. It was a good game but so far I think it was an experiment to test the new RE engine. Cheers!
Square Deffinently compets with them for inconsistancy
You're kinda not wrong. Lol
clownavenger they are, but I’m glad that they take risks and don’t play it safe or fuck over their fans like Konami. Silent Hill and Metal Gear will never come back again:(.
CAPCOM didn't just reuse the lossless assets for Resident Evil 0 HD; they reworked and added extra details just for the HD versions.
The ps2 coulnt run this game ,
Base Bass Forte remake is what it is vissualy thanks to gamecube , of it was in the ps2 it would look like the outbreaks saga
Base Bass Forte am, do you see the differences between resident evil 4 in game cube and ps2? Its like day and night , and remake is a lot more demanding till this days , even in the newest plataforms re4 run better (60fps) than the remake.
This game is by far one of my favourite games ever made. Fully supported the HD PC version too.
I agreed
Yes!
So. You may find them irritating at this point but the rest of the world and myself loves them.
We're talking about the game itself here, not how it's marketed/ported/etc.
This game is so amazing. I have definitely been playing this game while I wait for RE2 remake. This is the best Resident Evil game in my opinion. Just wish they would have added more dialogue in Chris's story. Code Veronica was another masterpiece as well.

Squad is waaaay better :D
So It wasnt just me then. I had the argument with a friend like 2 weeks ago. I thought it was ''Squad'' and he was like nah man its ''Services".
squad just rolls off the tongue better.
Doesn't bother me either way.

But it looks like they given the remake 2 re4 treatment

This game was, is, and will most likely forever be my favorite RE game. I started the series with RE2, but this game is so damn good. My two biggest complaints though are the voice acting/script and the fact that the story isn't completed with two playthroughs (they just kind of overlap each other)
As for the issue with cutscenes on the GameCube, I remember being annoyed by that when it first released, and it's weird because I only remember those issues in Jill's playthrough.

The remake was a fantastic game.
The REmake IS a fantastic game.

The naked zombies are definetly in the remaster just not if you play on Easy or below exactly the same as GC

Yeah I can totally understand that
@mysteryman2024 switching to original music doesn't return cut enemies, areas, scenarios
*Mr x will remember that*
Im Jason yo lol right
When you called it a puzzle game, the inventory management and "onion-layer" design suddenly reminded me of point and click adventure games like Myst or Maniac Mansion, except with tank controls and guns. And just like that, the entire series clicked in my head. I may actually have a shot at beating this now with that perspective, so thanks for the phrasing.
What was holding you back
I will not deny that this is an awesone RE title of the classic series. It always keeps me on my toes every time I play it cause you never know what is gonna happen next.
Operation or two, raccoon city......I see where your going next time.

No way! Really? that's awesome!! Thanks for keeping up with my work better than I do. HA!
I always chalked it up to kind of being a product of pre rendered. backgrounds

@Base Bass Forte Not. what did you dislike about it
@Base Bass Forte as in, it doesn't use stupid fixed camera angles?
I was so lucky to have played this as a kid when it came out. Now I just finished it again after almost 20 years and I love it just as much, if not more. Perfect game.
I wonder what a Resident Evil 2 and 3 Remake would have been like if it was made like this on the GameCube.

"The crimson heads add a huge level of strategy to the game"
I would have said more along the lines of add a huge amount of stress haha. They still freak me out till this day
They are way too creepy
Absolutely agree with you about classic RE being a giant puzzle game. Every mechanic in the game; the shooting, inventory management, exploration, the actual puzzles, even the story.. are all just pieces to the larger puzzle.
Even the combat. You have to strategically use sparse weapons and ammo. Blow through your stock and leave too many monsters alive, and you'll make the game virtually unwinnable.
Like those old text adventure or point and click games, where one wrong move and the game can't be beaten.
No joke, I love that people are agreeing with this. I kind of assumed most people would call me crazy for that.
Lol
Mom's spaghetti except it's just Jared saying, "story," over & over again.

I f'ing love it man.
hands down my favorite resident evil game, and probably my favorite game of all time
Yep me too! One of my top games ever for sure. Also.....I also shamelessly enjoy ORC.
This and RE4 are my favourite games of all time. Absolute masterpiece.
I remember popping this in my gamecube for the first time and being blown the fuck away. I was playing RE since the beginning and this one is still one of, if not, the best.
Couldn't agree more.

Managed to beat it on Hard mode last year and am thinking of beating it for the 10th time this year.
godofwar2k6reborn REmake is super beautiful but re2 remake is SUPER BEAUTIFUL
godofwar2k6reborn i agree. I wish REmake 2 would be like this and not like it is. I love fixed angles and amazing pre rendered graphics. They fucked it up, but i just played the demo its amazing
Obviously this particular comment hasn’t aged very well
This is one of my favorite games I've gotten a platinum trophy in. Absolutely timeless!
I always found it weird how just one console generation changed RE so much. The difference between RE1 and REmake is abysmal on every front.
The different was abysmal? I thought the difference was massive huge upgrade
I think he meant abyssal? Though that only makes quasi-sense.
The original PlayStation hardware was pretty weak compared to the next gen hardware
The bad sales and the exclusivity to GameCube is the reason it took so long to get RE2 remake
I think the gc exclusivity is what caused the bad sales. Capcom just didn't have an install base on the console.
Watching your retrospective always put a smile on my face thanks for that and this Resident Evil remake is my all time favorite
loved this game. i didn't even know there was a remake of resident evil until the HD version was released. but i bought it and even though my craptop would only run it in super slow motion on the lowest graphical settings, i refused to return it and waited until i got a better one, lol. even now on a newer laptop, it runs in slow motion just a smidge x]
when i first saw it i couldn't believe that it was made in 2002. it looks like it came out in 2012 or something.
i agree about the voice acting. i thought maybe it just seemed weird to me due to the slo-mo nature of my gameplay, (audio plays normally, video is slow making short, awkward pauses in dialogue) but thinking about it, no, it's actually just not great voice acting.
My 7yo cheap i3 @ 2.1ghz + GT 540M laptop easily rocks solid 30fps at 720p, High textures / Low shadows + FXAA on, using that fix, and it is still gorgeous.
i will try that next time i feel like playing through it! i mean my current laptop runs it GOOD ENOUGH but it's still annoying xD it's especially noticeable when jill grabs barry's gun. i saw a clip of it on youtube and thought, oh, that looked better... lol
One of my favourite youtubers, keep up the amazing work avalanche!!
Nice video dude. Also you sound kinda like Raycevick
Thanks! That guy has a some killer recording quality.
So, that's who Raycevick is. The other day, I noticed I beat his score in a level of Doom 2016s Arcade mode. I stared at his name, right below mine, for a minute wondering why the name "Raycevick" sounded so familiar.
"Small world", as they say.
Resident evil remake is a great horror game. Terrifying, the atmosphere, the mansion, the monsters, the music. It is all really well done
REsident Evil REmake REtrospective
too much RE
Love your content bro ! My favourite game series of all time getting some proper, long form discussion. Looking forward to your future work.
HamSlammer456 That’s fair. I’m absolutely fine with the change personally. Either way I’ll still likely buy it. :D
I am so happy they kept the "Sandwich" reference
How is there two easy settings and 4 hards?
I just want to say I hate Tank Controls. And I actually prefer the more action driven RE games like 4&5
Nothing wrong with that.
Jesus loves you
Yo, *mad respect* for the original concept for the game! THIS formula *is* the one that should've have stayed consistent throughout the franchise-
It's just, highly unfortunate the infamous CAPCOM exodus included Mikami....
I'm sorry but re2 and re3 remake don't have anything on this remake.
Avalanche's retrospectives are still unmatched, amazing job.👍🏻
You know, Resident Evil 2 Remake has been my favourite game of all time since its release. In terms of quality of a remake, its almost perfect, but its still not on the level that the Resident Evil HD Remake was.
I agree with you. If they didn’t butchered the A/B scenarios, RE2 Remake would have been my number one. It’s still the second best in the series.
My favourite Resident Evil game! I love everything about it especially the OST!
I definitely agree with you, Resident Evil is a puzzle game. You not only have to solve actual puzzles, but you have to solve the ultimate puzzle which is making it out of a very dangerous situation in which you're trapped in, and find your way back to safety.
This is my favorite remake of any game and you did so much justice with this.
I also like your insight with the quality/quirks you’ve found with the original and different ports. Clearly I don’t go that deep into it, but I can still appreciate what I see are accurate assessments.
Love this game so much, definetely one of my all time favourites.
I 100% got all achievements for the Xbox one edition recently. I love this game so much that I'm contemplating on buying for PS4 just to platinum it.
You convinced me I bought it while I’m watching the video 😂
Played this recently for the first time and I completely agree that the whole game is a type of puzzle, I was put off by the traditional inventory and save slots until I realised it's to be taken as part of the challenge. Great video!
I love your videos, man. You always lose me a little with all the technical stuff about graphics, but not blaming you, I'm just completely ignorant about that stuff.
I'm re-playing (and playing some for the first time) the RE franchise in release order so it was great to find your channel.
I would say that your video is the "Lost Episode" in the series. Great stuff. was looking forward to it in quite a while. Keep up the great work.
I never would have thought about the OG RE games being primarily puzzle games but once he said it, I was like “yeah, that was my experience. Puzzles with fear… and a dash of frustration”
