I remember staying up at night with my older brother and watching him play this. I never dared touch the controller myself, cause I was too young to handle it. But the atmosphere, menu sounds and music symbolized a time in our early lives that we both would never forget.
I would play it in my older brothers room when he was out, he only had the Leon disc and when I found out there was a second disc I felt like I was discovering a secret.
Freaking SAME But it was the RE1 remake for the gamecube in my case I watched my older brother play it And got so scared it cause me nightmares I can still remember one very vividly And that happened 5-6 years ago
I have the same memories of RE1 with my cousin. He'd play it with the lights off and it was the scariest thing my young mind had seen in it's short span of life.
In my case, I was the older brother playing, while my little sister watched. She was scared by the game for sure, but was even more concerned when she saw me looking like a scared cat while playing. Those were wonderful years.
I just replayed RE3 Nemesis and Code Veronica for dreamcast through emulators and both games are great but Code Veronica's level design for the first third of the game is pure doo-doo. A total backtracking nightmare. And I got to the end boss as Chris only to find out Claire has all my strong weapons so I couldn't defeat him. I couldn't beat this game as a kid and failed at the 99 yard line now :( still had a blast replaying tho and I highly recommend you all to do the same.
Get the abandonware RE1 PC port and Sourcenext ports for RE2 and RE3, apply Gemini's patches to turn them into the definitive best versions available, add them manually to Steam and add some fancy box art so everything looks nice in your collection. I guarantee you this is a much better experience than you'd get from an official Capcom release at this point.
Sorry, it's literally beaten by Silent Hill 2 (which might be the Aliens to Alien!) - SH2 is one of the best video games of all time, but RE2 is unquestionably in the top five sequels... (assuming Mariokart 64 counts too!)
Rage of the Turnip I respect your opinion but strongly disagree. I personally think Silent Hill 2 is overrated and boring after you put as many hours into it as I have. Silent Hill 3 is much more entertaining and full of content. The replay value of SH3 is remarkable, as is Resident Evil 2’s. Silent Hill 2 is iconic, creepy, deep, all that I know. But it’s not as stimulating or fun as the third game.
@@JackChurchill101 all of this is subjective but for me personally the best Silent Hill is Silent Hill 2 I agree and the best Resident Evil for me personally is RE HD remaster I never quite got all the love for RE2 for me it was a very safe sequel and always felt too easy and too much like an action game even as early as RE2 we can see Capcom trying to pull RE down an action route and trying to subtly ditch the scary side of RE, I really wanted another RE to take place in an old mansion type setting and have that sort of "trapped in a murder House" feel to it, it wouldn't be till Code Veronica that I got all that from a Resi sequel
The good thing is that all these games are great. They stand up.. Notice no one is talking about "silent hill Downpour" or Resident evil 6.... It's not because they're abominations, but because they're completely derivative...
Leon: Tell me ,claire . How is your brother ? Claire: Oh , he is such nice guy with such a big heart but somehow .... he has a huge hate against boulders. Leon: Why is that ? Claire: Because one time as we were Kids , we were in the Mountains on a trip and suddenly out of nowhere a Boulder crushed his Captain Commando action figure . At this time he swore to avenge his toy by punching boulders to dust . Leon: ...man ... he's pretty weird . Claire: ...yep ...
This is one of my top 3 games of all time. Hearing someone just as passionate about the game dissect and eloquently put into words what makes this game so special was a real treat. I remember playing this game with my older cousin when I was younger. We'd take turns playing and were stuck in the police station for weeks (we'd only play on weekends at my grandparents house), and every second was pure survival horror at its very best. Later on I finally built up the courage to play it alone, and boy did I play the crap out of it. When I later revisited it as an adult I started speed running the game around 6/7 years ago. I must've finished the game 80+ times back then .. such good memories. Like you rightly said, this is the pinnacle of all RE games and the one that all others should be compared to. REmake, CV and RE3 were also fantastic IMO, but RE2 will forever be the best in the series. Now that the RE2 remake has been announced, I'm nervously excited for it. First impressions is yeah sure it looks really good, but it's too different to ever truly replace the original. I wish they did it in the same style as REmake, not RE4. Oh well, still looking forward to it and I'll keep my hopes up.
I agree completely! It does look really good, but there's no way an over the shoulder shooter could achieve the same dread and atmosphere that the original.
3 years late to the thread but I just have to agree with you I was hoping so much they would have remade it like they did REmake. The game was good alright and they managed get me with scares, looked great graphic wise. But that first remake they did of RE1 was just spectacular, gorgeous pre rendered backgrounds and just an all round improvement that dropped you right into a pit of nostalgia
This one always reminds me of Spaced, when Tim is playing it in one episode. He describes it as a "subtle blend of puzzles and extreme violence". Amen lol
Guys, those who played the OG Trilogy at that Time would agree to RE 2 and 3 being Remade. I truly believe after what we got with RE 7, we have a bright future ahead. With Dark Games about Global Government/ Scientific Weapons and eating your fellow neighboor Greg for that basic nutritional value. Hope it does not get Fallout or Metro bright....although we would have truly radiating smiles...Ok I will stop now
the most impressive thing about this to me was being able to play 2 stories (given you'd do some of the same puzzles) some day i should consider replaying this...or just play the remake for a refresher. i didn't know this was released on the gamecube though.
Just rewatching the retrospective and this vid got me. Muscle memory in my thumb for the tank controls kicked in and took me back to my youth. Thanks Jared. RIP Paul Haddad the original and best voice of Leon
“Tank controls” are necessary with pre-rendered backgrounds. I don’t know why people can’t understand this. Otherwise the direction you are pushing would change when the camera view changed.
I played REmake with the alt controls, but I can definitely see why tank controls were better for the game overall. I had a few deaths due to me trying to figure out if S is front and W is back in that perspective. It's just inconsistent with alt controls so I'm recommending tank controls to whoever before they start that game.
Avalanche marathon between exams!! RE2 has a special place in my heart. I'll never forget that opening sequence and when the game first lets you take over. The change of scenery from RE1 was breathtaking in '98.
I've played this in my dreams & numerous times, as a child... maybe a mistake on my parents' part, but I turned out okay! I'm anxiously awaiting January '19.
The remake coming out in a month is the only Resident Evil game I've ever wanted. Been waiting decades for this game. Same goes for FF7 remake but definitely not holding my breath for that one anytime soon.
Thank god it lived up to the hype. 7 and RE2Make have been a complete return to form, and it's refreshing to see. I can't wait to see what they do with 3.
Man these retrospectives are amazing! I know im 6 years late but im new to the RE franchise, i started playing RE4 and i love it so much im playing the first games on the 3ds! These viddos are perfect
Having played the original and then hearing about this sequel being made, I don't think I've been as hyped up for a game before or since RE2. When it did finally release and getting to play it, it did not disappoint. Still, there was something missing in RE2 for me, I honestly can't put into words what and why, but what I can say is when RE3 came out, that completely filled whatever void RE2 left empty. I wasn't as hype for RE3, it just looked too similar to RE2, but when I played RE3, it quickly became my favourite of the series and has not been topped still to this day.
I gotta say that I'm the opposite. RE2 was the perfect package for me, and I thought RE3 was missing something, but you know what they say. Different strokes for different folks.
Yep, the general consensus out there is that RE2 is the best in the series, or at least the best of the classic games. Even my own oldest brother loves RE2 the most, he's the one who bought all the RE games back then, I was too young at the time to be able to afford them. So I was lucky enough to be able to play all original games on PlayStation, as well as the Director's Cut (not the shitty Dual Shock version with bad music) and the Sega Saturn version of RE1 (my personal favourite version of RE1). I think the absolute, best made, Resident Evil game is REmake, that's the pinnacle of Resident Evil and hasn't been done any better since. I just personally enjoy playing RE3 the most. I've been dreaming for years and years of what RE2&3 would be like in the style of REmake... I only hope that the RE2make is going to be more like REmake and less like anything RE4 and onwards. There's going to have to be a compromise though, as much as I would love pre-rendered backgrounds to return (limitless detail with every location looking completely unique), that limits gameplay options such as being able to free aim with a dynamic camera.
man, I don't know. Capcom has already said that the remake of 2 will be third person. Now that could techinically mean the same perspective as the original, but i think they're more likely to shoehorn in an re4 style, over the shoulder camera. I don't really have a lot of faith to be honest, but I will keep my fingers crossed that I'm wrong.
I agree! REmake just decimates its competition and RE3's gameplay improvements make it the most refined out of all RE games. The ONE nitpick i have for REmake is that it lacks extra modes.. Sega Saturn version is the only RE1 version to have the mercenaries mode.
Maybe what you were missing was a Jill Sandwich? I find myself somehow really attached to her as a character. To me she’s the “main” protagonist of RE1 more than Chris. So playing as her again in RE3 just seems right. Although it is important to play as other characters in between. Leon for example was a great addition, and look how far he’s come.
I just want to say that you have created the quintessential retrospective for the Resident Evil series. While the your opinion of each game is subjective; the quality is objectively incredible. These videos are well crafted and full of heart. It really seems like you enjoy talking about this series. Keep up the good work. This is the epitome of quality content.
Fuck man! Thank you so much! I was aiming for these videos to be exactly like you're describing them, and it means a lot to have someone confirm all the hard work that goes into this.
I remember the whole A/B scenario blew my mind. I was still young and never seen anything like it. I even had a strategy guide that depending on who you started with first you had to start from different sides from the book.
Thank you for your performance Paul haddad, you brought Leon’s character to life. Leon is one of my favorite characters and you were my favorite voice for Leon so far, I’m so sorry corona had to take you’re life.
Thanks for the next edition of your series and, as always, solid work! RE2 is still among my favorite games of all time. I love the A and B sides and how they were not just padding, but actual different experiences. Awesome shout out to the VMU, Dreamcast love ❤️
Back in the day, I played this game as a free demo for everything up to reaching the STARS office on the PC... I read about it in magazines, desperately awaiting the release date and enough paper rounds so I could afford it. It blew my mind. I'd played Doom and Command and Conquer and similar games, but this was something else. I played it so much that I got each scenario down about 90 minutes on a perfect runthrough, so if I wasn't busy, I would throw it on and do it all again - or play the whole thing on a rainy day. Definitely a pinnacle for the series and yes, the soundtrack was wonderful. That Police Station is still burned into my memory and I could navigate it in the dark to this day.
I played the demo that came with RE directors cut, and was completely obsessed. I didn't own it until way after it actually released, so I would rent it every few weeks, and just like you, I would just beat it when I was bored. So many good memories!
RE2 was the first Playstation Game I owned. Store i brought the console in had a deal where you got either 2 budget games or 1 top tier game. (always sticks in mind as had to get my mother to purchase it, due to the age rating)
Honestly the best RE of the classic PS1 trilogy and still great to play today. I hope the RE2 Remake still happens. Thanks for another great retrospective Avalanche!
Thanks for this wicked Retrospective RE series. Really enjoying them. First RE game I ever completed (more than once) was RE:2. Never bothered with the first one as it was too hard to buy second hand at the time, plus super difficult - but watched my mate play it all the way through with both characters. It's still my favorite for its scenario (and alt scenarios) and characters. It's also the game for me that has most cool/weird monster boss battles, and the most Dawn of the Dead / Assault on Precinct 13 vibe going for it. Never got tired of blowing off zombie heads or torsos with the shotgun. The later dual shock version was wicked for the battle mode mini-games plus the easy option of letting you play / cheat with the rocket launcher or gatling gun speed run (without having to earn the unlimited weapons, which I was never able to do). To this day, I wish their was a version of Resident Evil 4 gameplay/controls that had the traditional zombies of RE:2. I find the Las Plagas boring and convoluted, even if cool in a generic horror way.
Thank you so much for loving and understanding the series for what it is what it was and the Revolutionary influence it always has had on the industry. Resident Evil 2 is definitely the game when it comes to the height of survival horror especially growing up being born in 1986 what time is it in. Great video great series brand new subscriber watched all the videos in the series and love them all and appreciate you for what you do thank you
Fantastic retrospective learned some new info on this Capcom classic. I remember back when this game was first released. Wanted the game and got to play the game about six months after its PS release. My father brother and I would play this game and got about half way through the game. Now i have an original copy for PS and the dual shock version for PS3 off PSN.
Between you and gamer thumb resident evil is on lock. Score pn is old school re like you. I remember walking miles just to look at the original game in it's big black plastic case at video rental store way back in 96... I fell in love then . when I went to stay the night at a friend's and they put this game in at ten o'clock at night and you're like fourteen and blown away by the PlayStation after growing up on Nintendo and Sega Genesis...it was a moment I'll never forget.beautiful. and no one owned a memory card so you only got so far. You couldn't imagine how much the game had to truly offer until years later. Thanks for your videos.🎈🎉❤️
I have this really ridiculous memory that I love about RE2. When I was like 7, I decided I was old enough to play this game. So I did. I put the PS on the tv and I couldn't find a memory card, so I decided to play without it. (I know.) Everything was good until I reach the second half of the marshalling yard and I suddenly remember that Birking is next. And I was absolutely terrified of Birkin. So I had this bright idea of leaving the PS1 on running, game on pause, while watching tv, waiting for my dad to come back home from work so he can battle Birkin and I could continue my game LOL
RE2 definitely blew my mind when I played it and realized how intertwining the scenarios and the different characters are. Really sent my mind into a place that started seeing video game story-telling in a different light. Now a reimagined version of this classic is right around the corner. Concerns aside, I'm looking forward to it.
Agreed. What are your concerns with the new RE2? I'm curious to know. If you'd rather reserve your thoughts and make a video about it later I'd be interested to see it. I appreciate that you take the time to respond to comments Avalanche. You have my sub sir.
Excellent review!! RE2 is my favorite in the series as well. It was a magical time in gaming when it was released. I'll never forget the anticipation my brother and I had after playing the demo. Years later, I bought the Dreamcast port, and was more than pleased with it.
Watching this review while the new remake is downloading on my ps4. I never played the old one so it's good to see a review so I know somewhat of what I'm walking into.
Friggin' love this game! I actually tried out the N64 version of RE2 last year at a friend's house and was impressed. The character models look better than the PS version. Great gushfest, man!
If only Nintendo didn't gimp the n64's video output, right out of the gate. For real though, gushfest is the right word. I'm fucking obsessed with this series.
This was the first game I ever played. I remember when it first came out I played it in my cousins house. He told me to play and I picked Claire first. I was so scared I couldn’t even move past those boarded up windows. The moment a zombie broke through that window I screamed and threw the controller *sigh* it’s what made me love video games and got me into horror. Good times good times.
re 2 impress me immensly back then. it did a lot of things right, alot of things for the first time and had good ideas. the A and B scenario system was great and added replay value beyond the usual "getting a higher score". ive never seen anything like it before. mr x being able to break the rule of games by charging through a wall shocked me so much. i never expected that to happen, because games tought me that a dead enemie is dead and bosses dont appear right after another. the atmosphere was great. the soundtrack was great. for its time, it was a clear 10/10. sure, many people hated the tank controls back then but thats like saying pepsi is better then coke.
Man. I subbed, definitely your content its pretty good. Keep it up. Loving this series. Much good vibes from México. I'm replaying the series from zero to three.
@@AvalancheReviews Indeed it did, I feel like they did a great job with 3's REmake as well. Some of thr stuff cut out of that one was fluff that didn't really make the experience for me anyway. The characters were handled so much better and felt human and to me that's what matters.
The 4th survivor scenario was great, too. I particularly liked how one track played until you got to the main hall, then the main hall theme played. As soon as you went into the waiting room, a far more hectic sounding track started playing, since you were essentially on the final stretch, and the music change reflected it.
I grew up with the gameplay used in RE4 or 5, but I never had any issues with the tank controles once I played REmake and RE0. Same when I played the original Silent Hill games
Absolutely fantastic Video! Gave me a proper nostalgia trip. RE2 continues to be my favorite in the franchise. It got everything so damn right. The story is intriguing, with a great cast and it wasn't *too* corny. Raccoon City is an absolute blast. It's been over a decade now and I still have not found a zombie game that gets the scenario of zombie-invasion-in-city this right. The atmosphere is simply amazing, a lot of that is thanks to the soundtrack. It's easily the best ost in the franchise, it's fascinatingly creepy. "Nothing More to Do Here" is a great example of that. It oozes with thick atmosphere. You can imagine it. There's a story to this place. A struggle for survival that ended in tragedy. Every piece on the soundtrack has that. It feels very reflective to the environment. The same can be said about the graphics. The environments had a lived-in feel, that was much bigger than other titles in the franchise. I'm currently replaying RE3, but after watching this video, I think I'll go back to RE2. One more time.
I only like Rookie cop Leon Kennedy from Re2. I don't care for "Secret agent man" Leon Kennedy. He feels like a walking cliche now. Him and Chris Redfield too.
My, my, my....now we are at the tip of the spear. Capcom has always done a great job making “2’s” (Well, except for DMC2), but that’s for another day. Flat out excitement from beginning to end, awesome characters, great graphics, amazing replay value, weapon and weapon upgrading, enemy variety, badass G Virus, and the origin of my favorite character, Claire. It’s still beyond refreshing to play to this day. So, I’m beyond excited for the remake of this. So much so, I’m taking vacation days when this releases!
I recently played re 1.5 and that game is scary, even the zombies moaning is scary, and 1 thing i like about it, is that the zombies is tougher to kill and the zombies will be faster when they're about to "die"
The Game.Com version honestly feels higher on the "I can't believe this exists" meter over the N64 version. I remember first hearing about it and thinking "oh they must've just made it some kind of derpy platformer or something." The fact that they even THOUGHT "We can do a straight(ish) port and make the tank controls and 3D spaces function" and then went ahead with it boggles my mind to this day.
I'm just as nostalgic for Re2, being my fav in the series as well. I didn't know it did well back then though, thought nobody liked it due to the controls and slow paced gameplay of exploration. Great retrospective as always.
Thanks man! Yeah, if you go by the opinions of modern game journalists, it's easy to think people back then complained about the pace and controls, but everyone just accepted them as part of the game. No one ever really complained.
This was the one that started everything. My love for horror and video games. I was 6 years old when my father sat me down and played this. Before this I had only played Sonic on the Sega. But the sophisticated controls and story progression drew me in as a child. The horror factor was almost non existent due to my unknowing of real dangers. I have beaten this game over 100 times. And have a speed run record of 2 hours and 37 minutes with Leon's A scenario. My favorite baddy Mr X is here and did everything better than nemesis in my opinion. Claire is a goddess in my eyes and I love Ada's don't give a fuck attitude. Everything about this game defines survival horror to a T, and does it beautifully. I remember falling asleep to the safe room music as a kid to help me fall asleep. My favorite installment in the franchise so I was happy to hear it was yours too. I subscribed at that very moment. Keep on making these videos please. I love every one of them. I bet your looking forward to the remake as much as I am.
RE2 was technically my first experience with the RE series. Do to my primarily Nintendo oriented childhood I never really played any other system until I had a PS2. The funny part about my journey into my new 2nd favorite game series is when I first played RE2 as a kid, I couldn't get past the first couple screens. I would get so scared, panic, and inevitably pause or turn off the game lmao my first true RE game was RE4 when the Premium Edition was bought and the fancy metal case with awesome cover art caught my eye. Still have that copy today.
Claire Redfield's jacket has the words 'Made in Heaven' written on the back. This text is a direct reference to the Band Queen and its album 'Made in Heaven'. During the end boss battle, Ada Wong suddenly appears and throws a rocket launcher weapon that can be used to kill the boss. The same thing happens at the end of Resident Evil 4. According to the official Capcom page, Wesker was there when Ada fell and saved her. This would make sense as Ada joins forces with Wesker later on in the series. The game came out during a particularly important period for 3D gaming, as 1998 saw other notable releases like The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (1998), Metal Gear Solid (1998), Banjo-Kazooie (1998) and Half-Life (1998) change the gaming industry economically and aesthetically. First Resident Evil game released on a Nintendo console. The original had a game boy color version but it was never officially released. Although the N64 version had better character models, the FMV cutscenes ran poorly due to the fact that the console was cartridge based. After the tanker crashes into the police car during the opening cinematic, a "No Trucks" sign can be seen among the burning truck wreckage. The first Resident Evil to give a final grade after the game's completion. Resident Evil 1 never gave a grade after you beat it. Redrum' is painted on a wall in blood in the police station.
Definetly my favorite game of all time. I used to watch my dad play it on PlayStation 1, the scene of Marvin turning into a Zombie while being cheesy now it always stuck with me.
That's awesome! I love little moments like that in games. I have a million memories dedicated to small parts about a game, that most people would probably struggle to even remember.
This was truly the pinnacle of R.E. greatness! This game had the most replay value of all of the Resident Evils in my opinion. Did you play the 4th Survivor Scenario? These videos bring back fond memories and I hope you do the retrospective of Code Veronica on the Dreamcast one day! Keep up the good work!
I've just played the demo again with another account and still pretty impressed with what I've seen so far. Though minor disappointment that they are not calling the guns by their real world names and I think they ton down Leon's VP70 for balance. In the original, it's 18 rounds. Now it's 12 with a potential for an extension
Alyson was right-Claire DOES look like Neve Campbell! Imagine a version of George A. Romero's Biohazard 2 commercials with Neve as Claire (and just for the hell of it, Skeet Ulrich as Leon)
I never understood why some people think CV somehow isn't apart of the main series. The only reason Capcom made any remarks about that were more than likely said to not get sued play Playstation. Since they had an agreement for 3 numbered titles. So they just mad Nemesis 3 and CV not numbered.
Hilarious to me they changed Steve's hair in C:V X for being to DiCaprio-esque...and here we have rookie Leon who not only looks exactly like DiCaprio but even has Leo in his name as well!
To be honest I never actually got into RE/RE2 back when they came out. The reasons were... I was very young, they scared me too much and I couldn't get used to the tank controls. And like Mr. FlyingPlantWhale's case, I remember staying up at night with my older brother and watching him play Resident Evil 3 and I never dared touch the controller myself, cause I was too young to handle it. But the time passed and I decided to give a chance some of the classics games like Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil - CODE: Veronica X and I felt in love with the franchise. Not to mention, CAPCOM is my favourite video game company of all time.
Fun fact that probably everyone knows by now: When the Licker gets introduced in Leon A scenario, Leon mumbles something along the lines of "Goood boy" really quiet-like when he sees the Licker crawling on the ceiling in the cutscene, but his mouth doesn't move.
i cant wait for the remake bc this is one of the few re games i havent played, and tbh im happy it will be over the shoulder bc i dont care for the tank controls, i think they were fine at the time but they needed serious changes
I still think there's a place for tank controls, as they are still the best way to control a game with fixed camera angles in so many different perspectives, but the good news is, no one has made a game with those type of camera angles in the last 10 years, so I doubt you'll ever see those type of controls again.
Cool retrospective. RE2 was the first one in the series that I have played and it was awesome, back in the days it felt like being in a good zombie flick with awesome music and excellent visuals (at the time). In comparison with the original, RE2 managed to surpassed it across the board. It's my favourite in the whole series.
I remember noticing that as a teen. The noise they made, and how accurately the casings bounced, blew me away back then. Kind of still does, to be honest.
Say what you will, but RE 2 on n64 was the scariest game that I owned until Dead Space on xbox 360. It was a game that I only booted up at certain hours of the day and only when someone else was home. Nowadays horror is one of my favorite genres in cinema and video games... but there was a time where it was nearly untouchable for me.
As much I love the graphics, gun's and gore of the Resident Evil 2 remake, it will never top orginal Resident Evil 2, mainly because zombies are not bullet sponges, Paul Haddad as Leon Alyson Court as Clare, Mr.x is only in the second scenario, Resident Evil 2 original was near perfect thank you for your review Avalanche 👍
I’ve never played the original but I absolutely can not wait for the RE 2 REmake to come out so I can play the hell out of it. Resident Evil quickly became my favourite video game series of all time when I finally became old enough to not be scared to play them. And I can already tell that the RE2 REmake is going to become my new favourite game. I’ve been waiting a very long time for the RE2 REmake thinking that it would make the ultimate survival horror realistic zombie game, if redone using modern technology, and now it’s coming! Dead Island, Dying Light, Dead Rising and Left 4 Dead don’t count in my book; they’re all completely different unique to themselves but not what I’ve wanted in a “True” zombie game.
Avalanche Reviews what do you mean? It for sure will be, they’ve improved everything just like with REmake, the only difference is they went with an over the shoulder view instead of fixed camera angles. To be honest, I was also hoping for FCA like they did with REmake but it seems like they’re staying pretty true to the original other than that. It will be dark and ammo will be scarce, it will still be survival horror. I’m not too heart broken over not having FCA because I’ve been waiting so long for this and it looks so great in all other aspects. Who knows they might still have thrown in FCA as an unlockable option
Usami Ueda really outdid himself with this soundtrack, next to David Wise's Donkey Kong Country tracks these are far and away my fave game songs.
Freaking
SAME
But it was the RE1 remake for the gamecube in my case
I watched my older brother play it
And got so scared it cause me nightmares
I can still remember one very vividly
And that happened 5-6 years ago
I have the same memories of RE1 with my cousin. He'd play it with the lights off and it was the scariest thing my young mind had seen in it's short span of life.
In my case, I was the older brother playing, while my little sister watched. She was scared by the game for sure, but was even more concerned when she saw me looking like a scared cat while playing. Those were wonderful years.
I think it's a damn shame CAPCOM hasn't released the classic RE games on Steam
Syber-VHS there are places where you can download the game. Not the most safe way but I have one that works. No cgi cutscenes or music tho
@Chroist Alisma ah yes, my old account, i kinda miss it lol
You're damn right about that!
The RE2 soundtrack was PERFECT for playing during Halloween. Really set the mood. Excellent vid, Avalanche.
Many thanks man!
"Resident-EVIL!"
That sounds way more menacing than "Biohazard!"
That gravelling, deep "EVIL!" is chilling.
yeah, but even Mikami admited this title is the stupid one
RE2 on the N64 was my first RE/horror game experience.....what a way to start. it blew my mind while scaring hell out of me.
That was an impressive port
I'm playing it on my n64 right now!
Resident Evil 2 is the Terminator 2: Judgement Day of gaming. Best sequel of all time.
I could not agree more!
I think this counts as fan fiction
Snyperwolf91 so thats how the blue bomber take the job as Capcom mascot
Chris "Fuck Boulders" Redfield.
He can also change his face whenever he wants. It's very creepy and annoying.
Avalanche Reviews canon*
@Dominic dominic it was good but the b scenarios were shit.
Hopefully they’ll make another RE2 remake thats just like the RE1 remake that style of gameplay and aesthetics is way too good to pass up
The self-destruction sequence music has been stuck in my head for...let's see... 18 years now? Iconic!
How crazy is it, that I read that in the announcer's voice?!?!??! I always focused on how she pronounced "been" as "bean"
Agreed, the best game in the series. Love the videos. You're definitely one of the most criminally underrated channels on TH-cam!
Well damn! Thanks!
This one always reminds me of Spaced, when Tim is playing it in one episode. He describes it as a "subtle blend of puzzles and extreme violence".
Amen lol
Can't wait for the remake
SAME!!!
Thanks for replying
Same as well
Guys, those who played the OG Trilogy at that Time would agree to RE 2 and 3 being Remade. I truly believe after what we got with RE 7, we have a bright future ahead. With Dark Games about Global Government/ Scientific Weapons and eating your fellow neighboor Greg for that basic nutritional value. Hope it does not get Fallout or Metro bright....although we would have truly radiating smiles...Ok I will stop now
@K Thomas Nah its automatically top 3 RE games of all time sorry. It sold more than the original and save the franchise. 😂😂😂
the most impressive thing about this to me was being able to play 2 stories (given you'd do some of the same puzzles)
some day i should consider replaying this...or just play the remake for a refresher. i didn't know this was released on the gamecube though.
Just rewatching the retrospective and this vid got me. Muscle memory in my thumb for the tank controls kicked in and took me back to my youth. Thanks Jared. RIP Paul Haddad the original and best voice of Leon
I was so excited to see the video was up. Amazing as usual!
+Game Music Minutia good to hear man. Thanks
“Tank controls” are necessary with pre-rendered backgrounds. I don’t know why people can’t understand this. Otherwise the direction you are pushing would change when the camera view changed.
Play deep fear on Saturn with 3d controller. No tank controls and plays fine.
Not hating tank controls btw
Having played re1 HD without tank controls felt amazing. I don't think tank controls help the experience
I played REmake with the alt controls, but I can definitely see why tank controls were better for the game overall. I had a few deaths due to me trying to figure out if S is front and W is back in that perspective. It's just inconsistent with alt controls so I'm recommending tank controls to whoever before they start that game.
@Dominic dominic if by scary you mean scared of losing progress because of a stupid death then yes I agree
Yes i know I played all of re1 remake like that i would still prefer that to pressing forward on the dpad to go towards the camera
How the hell have I only just found these videos? They’re amazing, getting me through the lockdown while I replay RE:2 remake before starting 3 💪🏼
Avalanche marathon between exams!! RE2 has a special place in my heart. I'll never forget that opening sequence and when the game first lets you take over. The change of scenery from RE1 was breathtaking in '98.
The crashing tanker truck splitting up the two was MARVELOUS!!!
On January 29th, 2019......we do it
An when it comes out, I do it too!
I can't wait!!
We do it... for the money!
I've played this in my dreams & numerous times, as a child... maybe a mistake on my parents' part, but I turned out okay! I'm anxiously awaiting January '19.
Yep! Same here
The remake coming out in a month is the only Resident Evil game I've ever wanted. Been waiting decades for this game. Same goes for FF7 remake but definitely not holding my breath for that one anytime soon.
Exactly! Same here
Thank god it lived up to the hype.
OMFG January can't come quick enough. Only 4 months to go till we finally get to play the remake, I can't wait.
Same here. I have my fingers crossed so hard, that it will be as good as it looks.
I am loving these RE retrospectives, really looking forward to them and enjoying your enthusiasm and love for the series, keep it up man!
That makes my day, thanks!!
Avalanche Reviews I'm loving it so far! Looking forward to your RE7 review.
I remember the whole A/B scenario blew my mind. I was still young and never seen anything like it. I even had a strategy guide that depending on who you started with first you had to start from different sides from the book.
Thank you for your performance Paul haddad, you brought Leon’s character to life. Leon is one of my favorite characters and you were my favorite voice for Leon so far, I’m so sorry corona had to take you’re life.
ayyy an avalanche retrospective on my fav Resident Evil game. let's fucking go.
Ayyyyy!!!
This game has always made me come
Thanks for the next edition of your series and, as always, solid work! RE2 is still among my favorite games of all time. I love the A and B sides and how they were not just padding, but actual different experiences. Awesome shout out to the VMU, Dreamcast love ❤️
No joke, I thought VMUs were the future of gaming. I was blown away when I saw that you could display your health on it!
RE 1 = Wolfenstein 3D of the series(good start but rough on the edges)
RE 2 = Doom of the series(perfected the formula)
Great vid as usual, I remember playing Res 2 all the time, soo many amazing memories, the fact its being remade is beyond exciting!!
Low key wish this video was longer, it was really cool and entertaining good job avalanche 👍🏿
My pleasure! Glad you liked the video.
I can't believe OG RE2 only gets a 10 min video... best resident evil and.one of the best games ever made
Thank you so much for loving and understanding the series for what it is what it was and the Revolutionary influence it always has had on the industry. Resident Evil 2 is definitely the game when it comes to the height of survival horror especially growing up being born in 1986 what time is it in. Great video great series brand new subscriber watched all the videos in the series and love them all and appreciate you for what you do thank you
So glad I own Silent hill 1, Re2, Re3, Dino Crisis 2 on my ps3. Retro games are the best.
And did he?
@@drunkensailor112 Yeah, he did! And then I asked him again for the final boss in the platform LOL
Finally. I made it to the BEST game in the series no contest
No arguments here
RE2 definitely blew my mind when I played it and realized how intertwining the scenarios and the different characters are. Really sent my mind into a place that started seeing video game story-telling in a different light. Now a reimagined version of this classic is right around the corner. Concerns aside, I'm looking forward to it.
Me too. I may be a little disappointed, but it still looks amazing.
Agreed. What are your concerns with the new RE2? I'm curious to know.
If you'd rather reserve your thoughts and make a video about it later I'd be interested to see it.
I appreciate that you take the time to respond to comments Avalanche. You have my sub sir.
I'm actually putting out video tomorrow. I think it'll clear things up.
Awesome
Excellent review!! RE2 is my favorite in the series as well. It was a magical time in gaming when it was released. I'll never forget the anticipation my brother and I had after playing the demo. Years later, I bought the Dreamcast port, and was more than pleased with it.
Thanks man! I remember getting the demo, in the dual shock ver of RE1. I feel in love right then and there.
Watching this review while the new remake is downloading on my ps4. I never played the old one so it's good to see a review so I know somewhat of what I'm walking into.
I remember playing RE6 and then realized at the time of release, I was the exact same age as Sherry in RE2 when I played it the first time
Friggin' love this game!
Easiest way to beat RE2: #1 Start game. #2 Find Doc. #3 Accelerate to 88MPH. #4 Destroy Umbrella in the past.
Remember that door that when opened has Zombies start walking through. That was the only time Resident Evil has scared me.
Fuck yes! I'm not too proud to say that the scene where you fall through the library floor, scared the shit outta me.
re 2 impress me immensly back then. it did a lot of things right, alot of things for the first time and had good ideas. the A and B scenario system was great and added replay value beyond the usual "getting a higher score". ive never seen anything like it before. mr x being able to break the rule of games by charging through a wall shocked me so much. i never expected that to happen, because games tought me that a dead enemie is dead and bosses dont appear right after another. the atmosphere was great. the soundtrack was great. for its time, it was a clear 10/10. sure, many people hated the tank controls back then but thats like saying pepsi is better then coke.
I agree completely!!!
Man. I subbed, definitely your content its pretty good. Keep it up. Loving this series.
Much good vibes from México.
I'm replaying the series from zero to three.
Thanks man!
The original RE 2 Version was always my favourite Resident Evil and will it be forever. Such a good game. 🖤
This was the first game that I ever played and I've been a fan of the series ever since. The REmake was done damn well too which makes me happy.
Yep. I was really worried they wouldn't handle the remake very well, but it turned out so damn well.
I remember hearing rumors about the 4th survivor, back before every secret was on the internet immediately
I grew up with the gameplay used in RE4 or 5, but I never had any issues with the tank controles once I played REmake and RE0. Same when I played the original Silent Hill games
Played RE2 at 12 years old, way back in ‘98. So extremely excited, 20 years later, to play the remake.
Same here!
RE 2 is my favorite sh game of all time. The music in particular is phenomenal.
It's my favorite too!
No joke, I think you just wrote a better review for this game, than I did!
Leon Kennedy is my favorite character in the resident evil games
I only like Rookie cop Leon Kennedy from Re2.
I don't care for "Secret agent man" Leon Kennedy. He feels like a walking cliche now. Him and Chris Redfield too.
Leon is great, but you can't forget Barry goddamm sandwich Burton
That is a damn good point
This soundtrack. The escape from lab music and the scenario B ending credits are amazing
+TheJoebag1 You could say that about any song on the soundtrack! They're all insanely good!
RE1 & RE2 allways feeld like Terminator 1 & 2 in terms of how the sequel improved
That's a damn good way to put it!
the tyrants are some kind of terminator
Exactly e feel the same with Silent hill and Silent Hill 2
RE2 and SH2 best games of all time for me
I'm just as nostalgic for Re2, being my fav in the series as well.
Can you imagine what kind of RE game we could have today.... you could build a 40 hour experience using pre rendered background... I'd buy it.

The first Resident Evil to give a final grade after the game's completion. Resident Evil 1 never gave a grade after you beat it.
Redrum' is painted on a wall in blood in the police station.
Resident evil 2 is my all time favorite resident evil game of all time :-) amazing review
That classic Capcom jingle, so many memories.
I'm trying to stay away from the demo. I want to go in completely blind.
Alyson was right-Claire DOES look like Neve Campbell!
Imagine a version of George A. Romero's Biohazard 2 commercials with Neve as Claire (and just for the hell of it, Skeet Ulrich as Leon)
Something I really want to know about the RE2 Remake is if it's going to have the A and B scenarios for Leon and Claire again.
I would love to know that too. So far, all we have is rumors though.
Are you going to do code veronica? Its not numbered but i feel like its pretty important
It wouldn't be right not to!
Avalanche Reviews woo! 😎 thanks
I never understood why some people think CV somehow isn't apart of the main series. The only reason Capcom made any remarks about that were more than likely said to not get sued play Playstation. Since they had an agreement for 3 numbered titles. So they just mad Nemesis 3 and CV not numbered.
pelleman02wb yup 👍
Right? CV closed Claire's arc from RE2 and it also brought Chris and Wesker back for their (disappointing) arc in RE5.
Hilarious to me they changed Steve's hair in C:V X for being to DiCaprio-esque...and here we have rookie Leon who not only looks exactly like DiCaprio but even has Leo in his name as well!
had this res3 and code veronica on dream cast an remember beating both a and b scenarios and unlocking everything, my favorite resident evil.
+Adam Cochran It's definitely my favorite too. Sometimes I just breeze through Leon's a scenario, in my free time.
Okay now that I binged watch the whole series of these I cant wait for the last movie or resident evil 8!!!!!
Fun fact that probably everyone knows by now: When the Licker gets introduced in Leon A scenario, Leon mumbles something along the lines of "Goood boy" really quiet-like when he sees the Licker crawling on the ceiling in the cutscene, but his mouth doesn't move.
I always thought he said Oh Boy
Avalanche Reviews Having seen it again, I think he did. His mouth still doesn't move, though
I had this for the N64, It was my first Resident Evil game. I have the Gamecube port now and I am excited for the remake
The n64 version was pretty damn impressive, as far as ports go.
@@AvalancheReviews Yeah it was, They crammed 2 disc into a single N64 cart
This RE2 retrospective is the perfect sequel to your 1.5 video.
Thanks man! Glad it stacked up to the last one, cause I put a lot of work into both.
The best RE 2 review on the Tube, thank you.
The potential plus side is that there's a re2 remake coming out sometime in the near future. Fingers crossed it looks really good
i cant wait for the remake bc this is one of the few re games i havent played, and tbh im happy it will be over the shoulder bc i dont care for the tank controls, i think they were fine at the time but they needed serious changes
I still think there's a place for tank controls, as they are still the best way to control a game with fixed camera angles in so many different perspectives, but the good news is, no one has made a game with those type of camera angles in the last 10 years, so I doubt you'll ever see those type of controls again.
I LOVE THE MUSIC IN THE TRAIN YARD!!! SO EEERIE
It really did feel like a good zombie movie!
I just noticed at 1:09 the bullets bouncing off the wall....the detail of this game for its time
I remember noticing that as a teen. The noise they made, and how accurately the casings bounced, blew me away back then. Kind of still does, to be honest.
Avalanche Reviews for sure! I'm just noticing it lol
Omg tonight at midnight! RE2 remake!!
It looks great to me too, but I can't shake the disappointment that it won't be a survival horror game.
RE to was my 1st foray into re. I'm definitely looking forward to the Resident Evil2 remake.
You and me both
