I spent a few days in Breckenridge, Colorado with the folks at Rivian and their new R1T electric truck. I drove the vehicle extensively on the highway, in canyons, on dirt/gravel roads, and even up some pretty aggressive rock crawling trails. I have a lot of thoughts: from a tour of the exterior/cabin to my thoughts on the driving dynamics, vehicle functions, user interface design, ADAS Driver+ system and more, this is a video you won't want to miss if you're interested in the incoming electric truck!

Side note: the 8,500 lbs number I threw out is the GVWR. The curb rate is obviously going to be a lot less. Rivian wouldn’t tell me exactly (idk why) but when I asked if 6,000 lbs was in the ballpark, an engineer told me yes.

Electronically activated door handles are typically used with frameless windows in order to slightly open the window before opening the door. This prevents damage to the window, door and windows seals when the door is opened. Since the Rivian doesn't have frameless windows, you can yank the doors open at will without risking any damage.

    • @leo-ub6nb

Aye, I said the same thing. Then I went and got a truck because we needed one for hauling shit. We were never those type of people/families to haul stuff around and move big items, we're city people from NY. But because of where we lived at the time (WA), we were able to find great deals on second hand items and it was a hassle trying to haul those big items in my 4-door Accord.
Now, I honestly can't see myself going back to a regular car. I don't haul as much stuff now, except the occasional big item here and there. The hauling truck has turned into the family truck. So much room for everyone with the capability to hold a ton of things in the bed and/or tow something.
I moved from Washington state to Florida. I loaded up the truck with my family, some house goods in the bed, and towed my Accord on a car dolly. Couldn't have been a smoother trip!
I'm addicted to the utility of a truck. Glad that EVs are breaking into the truck segment and that companies are bringing back compact trucks, not everyone needs a full-size truck.
Sorry for the long ass message.

How does it tow? Did they let you tow with the truck? If so, how many miles can you tow with a 5,000 lbs trailer.

Now, I’m going to preface my comments here, but saying that you are one of my most trusted, and respected tech TH-camrs. Knowledgeable, well researched and highly technically capable. - Okay, Here it comes… - BUT,,,, this isn’t a computer, phone, camera or any other piece of tech. This, is a truck. They can throw as much tech as they want at it, but it’s a truck. As such, a review of a truck, must be compared to what’s currently available. So sure, it’s nice that you were impressed. But, and again, I really do have the greatest respect for you. How many other trucks have you driven? Do you have the needed behind the wheel experience to compare any of it’s driving characteristics, to the current fleet of pickups? Without this background, the weight this is going to hold with me, is greatly diminished. It’s like my grandmother being blown away by how nice a picture, or video is from a phone. With no frame of reference to base her opinion on, that glowing review means little. This is in no way a knock against you, even if it feels like it. It actually throws shade on Rivian. They could’ve called on experienced hard hitting reviewers like TFL, or The Truck King. But, and I’m drawing the only conclusion I can see here, they didn’t because they were afraid of being exposed. So they invited tech reviewers. Who of course took the offer, who wouldn’t! - In my opinion, this is a tactical move by Rivian to control the narrative, get glowing reviews, while not deserving them. Shame on you Rivian.

None of the vehicles seem capable for managing real wold conditions on a day to day basis. Frankly I'm happy someone out there is recognizing the limitations...thanks for sharing!

Especially an "autonomous offroad driving" feature. isn't the point of offroad driving to experience driving fun new terrain?

The greatness of the video outweighed the clickbait title. Nicely done! This definitely does not kill the Cybertruck, though. Rivian and Tesla will sell as many R1Ts and Cybertrucks as they can make, it's legacy automakers without compelling EV offerings that will suffer.
If I had the money, I'd want both, but I'm going with Cybertruck for the range, the stainless steel (no babying paint as I am compelled to do when it's there), and the Tesla tech I know and enjoy.

Love your honest and fair reviews. You aren’t overly critical or overly praising. Just give very fair and as unbiased as possible facts/opinions.
Also love to see an honest car company that doesn’t just overhype and over promise everything and consistently underdeliver. *cough* Tesla *cough*
    Very refreshing.

One note though.. By stating the charging pad, I really would like to see where it is.
Can you please get some B-roll on that in your future usage video?

Its the perfect vehicle to visit Planet Kolob. It even has extra storage for Temple garments and seating space for Rasband and Holland.

Ok. I don’t know what your background is but you are one gifted dude. I wish I knew half of the stuff you know about these trucks. Enjoy your new Toy. I had no idea they were so off road capable. That camp kitchen is amazing.

Looks like you had the Launch Green R1T. Yours is the only review so far from the Breckinridge press event that highlights the back seat under-seat storage. Great review. Honest feedback about the sound system - refreshing. I haven’t seen another reviewer discussing some of these important points. Great details about the drive experience, increased deflection, the brake regen, and more. As a preorder holder since 2019, you answered quite a few of my remaining open questions.

I understand needing to make a performance version first, to impress new customer bases that you can do it. But I will have to wait for the $25k version. Still waiting for that with the Tesla as well. Good to see more companies popping up. Its good for everybody.

An ICE 2 door F-150 2 wheel drive costs a bit over $29k. You will likely never see a $25k version. When you consider the features line by line, the price is not that out of line and you are getting something revolutionary.

$25 K is too low and unrealistic for a truck with this type of sophistication and features. Maybe $35 K and stripped down.

"Two dual-motor units" adds up to 4 motors, one for each wheel. What do you mean by "not quite quad-motor"?

    • @descendency

I wonder if there is something linking them together somehow? and that they are not true independent motors? IDK. That was the same question I had.

Same motor unit with 2 divided drive shaft.

I don’t understand what he meant by that either. There are 2 motor packs comprising of 2 motors per pack, 4 total. The truck has complete torque vectoring down to an individual wheel. That’s why it can do a tank turn, it has 4 motors. It’s not as as if it’s one motor a differential and 2 drive shafts.

I love what I see so far about the Rivian truck. The 4 motors and the range is impressive. The warranty Rivian offers is really really good ( 8 year or 175,000 mile I believe). Only downside is the price starting at almost $70k. Whew 😅!! Bank breaker for us normal people.

Quinn, what a fabulous review! Your trademark honesty shines through and watching your review was almost as enjoyable as your experience reviewing the Rivian.
