Great video Pan, I have been a GYEON Certified Detailer since 2015 in the UK, now also USA GYEON Certified with another business, so massive amounts of experience with GYEONS coatings,
The decreasing stage before applying a coating is critical!
I have been using the decreasing tabs for two years now since they were released to Certified Detailers,
Ths process is very effective, the solution itself is nice to use, its like washing your car with a Slick high quality shampoo,
only downside is the additional time added as of course the vehicle needs to be dried fully before you can coat, all water traps blown out and the paint given a final wipe with PREP,
it is worth the effort however as the coating can make a perfect bond with the bare paint and also much easier to apply with no oil mixing with the coating.
Interested to see what you think of the process using the degrease tabs.
    Richard

    Great content Pan.
This is a great message to the industry.
As mentioned if you’re using a company’s system from initial wash to coating you will obtain the best results.
Many detailers like to mix and match. Sometimes this leads to great results, other times, catastrophic failures.
Knowing what your polish leaves behind is important in knowing how to ensure that the surface is ready for coating.
A quality APC can also be used prior to the application of the panel prep. It can be as simple as spraying the APC on a towel, wiping on, and wiping off.

Post polishing, I wash, degrease with various chemicals and use Deionised water.
I dry with new towels, then do a few rounds of prep spray. There's alot more to it. Many don't realise how much work is involved to actually prep a vehicle properly.

Pan, post-polish washing works well. I ceramic coated my second vehicle a couple weeks ago. De-con'd/compounded/polished one afternoon and ran out of time to fininsh the job. Next morning, re-washed with Griot's Surface Prep foam before IPA/distilled H2O wipedown(truck sat outdoors overnight, so to remove new dust) and dried. Diamond Protech 36 went on smoothly, looks great, and has worked well through several rains since. Thanks for all the info!

I'm a Gyeon Certified Detailer and I can highly recommend just 1-step polishing your car with a DA polisher, blue or orange Lake country HDO pad and Gyeon Primer. This is a special polish made to be topped with a coating and will make application of the coating easier. Only Gyeon Prep is needed after Gyeon Primer.
Also maintenance is key. Wash your care with Gyeon Restartwash and use Gyeon CeramicDetailer of Gyeon Cure on a regular base.
When you notice water beading is getting bad then do a deepclean with Gyeon Iron and Gyeon Tar and you can always top the coating with Gyeon CanCoat. This is a great hydrophobic topper for your coating.

Question, lets say you have moderate swirls and light scratches on your car - should you 1 step polish, use gyeon prep, then gyeon primer and lastly gyeon prep again?
edit: or would gyeon primer be sufficient enough to remove the swirls and light scratches?

    • @CoatingPoint

I've always known that IPA solutions and panel prep sprays didn't have the degreasing power to remove waxes or sealants. That's why I always do a light polishing (not a full correction) before I apply a coating, even when the paint seems to be good condition.

Love your deep dives Pan and this deep dive is really good. I can see the act of fully ensuring the polishing oils are fully removed by using hot water and a degreaser. A lot of soaps have a sheeting protection built into them which makes me think Dawn may leave behind protection no one sees because it sheets. The drying towel would definitely have to be free from other protection left behind from previous uses. I can see companies developing a hot water system to fully ensure the paint is clean. I would if Forensic detailing comes out with a video on this subject now? Thank you for a great video and I hope everyone is well!

About two years ago I did my own prep and CSL coat on a car and it worked out great.
Despite all my research I added my own step, a second decon soap wash, right after final polish and before using Gyeon Prep.
It just seemed right to do that second decon before the Gyeon Prep.
My result, and your video here, has vindicated doing that extra step.

I've applied Carpro Dquartz Go to my car last weekend, spent all day preparing the car for Dquartz. My last step after polishing was Carpro Eraser. I did two coats of Dquartz. I noticed a rainbow film and sweating effects of which you normally only experience rainbow or sweating but not both. I was pretty thorough with Eraser. It seems ok. Its nearly been a week but unfortunately, I've got caught out in the rain tbis evening. Im sure the coating is fine, but if it fails I'll polish it all off and start over. The coating isn't too badly priced but its just the hassle of all that prep. Fingers crossed 🤞 It'll be ok.

Holy crap! I guess my amateur butt is more Pro than I thought!
I have always done the "Dawn Washing" right after paint corrections and blow dry. I used commercial automotive paint prep for the final step before application of coating. Yo Pan, Thanks for the deep dive and for sharing the info gathered during the dive. You just added another layer either with dish soap or the tablets to ensure all the oils are removed. I have followed previous instructions and these did not include an additional wash with dish washing liquid....but it all good as I rather invest 30 additional minutes of my time to ensure the customer walks away with the best possible ceramic coating application on his vehicle. I agree, it's all in the preparation; the ceramic application is straight forward. Thanks again!!

    • @PanTheOrganizer
      @PanTheOrganizer  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

My pleasure! And just to be clear, if you are using Gyeon coatings, they clearly say in their instructions to wash the car after polishing the paint. They say, and I quote: "Always wash the car with a highly degreasing agent. Hot water and the use of a dishwashing liquid are recommended."
So Gyeon is one of those companies that understands that many paint polishes (from any brand) can leave behind residue and oils and fillers that IPA alone won't fully remove. So you'd wash, decon, machine polish, wash again with dishwashing liquid, then dry, then panel prep, then apply the coating.

But, that car is garage kept most of the time so I'm not a good subject. I have to do the coated car another time shortly wit CarPro CQuartz UK 3,0 & Gliss. I will definitely buy CarPro IPA and try that added washing step with dishsoap before applying the IPA prep spray. I will not go through with the utilisation of the Gyeon degreasing tabs however. About three years ago I applied Armour Shield IX on my IROC, my Silverado, and my wife's Trax. I only washed the cars and used a clay mitt--no DA polishing or any other mechanical prep or spray. The coating on my IROC continues to hold up pretty darn well--it should be noted that I only hand wash and used Turtle Wax Flex Wax as a drying agent. The Truck and Trax are in need of new coating this spring. Those two vehicles go through a car wash. I occasionaly apply a Ceramic Detail spray, though that seems to be too little too late. As for dishwashing soap, when I started driving in '77 I used Dawn. I continued to do so for may years. I did wax my cars every two or three weeks. (One of the best waxes--not by brand--was a tinted wax.) If I missed removing any of the wax, it was hard to see because the red coloring blended well with my "maroon" cars. Have a Blessed Easter, Pan.

Ever since I heard Yvan mention this, I’ve thought it was more important to chemically match the panel prep to the polish/compound used rather than the ceramic coating used. All the coating wants to see is clean paint, and it’s the polish manufacturer that knows what oils and fillers they use and how to best remove them.
I think what we need to see are some polishes/compounds intended to be followed up with a coating, meaning they contain easily removable components.

Do some include additives that are worse than others? And now you’re touching the vehicle MORE after the paint correction step. Once for the dish soap wash, again to dry the vehicle, and once for the prep spray wipe, so is there now more opportunity to introduce new scratches and marring?!? 😂 Whole new rabbit hole to go down. @MarcYanOfficial pro detailers shouldn't need to be protected by Gyeon. Their WORK should be protection enough. If you're running a business and can't compete with people doing DIY, then you're really not that good of a business, or not worth what you think you are.

I understand the theory behind the wash with dish soap before coating but there is a heck of a lot of vehicles that have been ceramic coated with just using a prep spay and those coated vehicles seem to be doing just fine. So I'm not being cynical but I have used Gyeon Prep spray numerous times and the ceramic is still on the vehicles I've done. The extra wash and rinse will now have to added into the labor costs.

Great tips pan. I will be prepping my New 2024 BMW 540i next weekend and will use Dawn dishwashing soap after I Paint correction with the DA polisher. Will coat the car with Armour Ceramic Coating which should arrive next week. Finger crossed Armour lasts longer than Gyeon Mohs Evo which is on my other vehicles. So far my favorite and longest-lasting have been the Ceracote Ceramic Coating which they pulled from the shelves, and can no longer be purchased on their website. All the Naysayers out there who failed to follow Ceracotes instructions sabotaged a great product.

I’m going to try it next weekend also. I’m going to use a brand new wash mitt for the dawn wash. I would hate to have some grit trapped in one of my other mits and micro scratch the freshly polished surface 🫠 Which also makes me think I should use a new drying towel. I’m sure the surface is going to be hard to dry with zero hydrophobics on the surface.

I believe we have an obligation to do our share to reduce the cost of these processes so that ore people can join in the car detailing while keeping our eyes on the end result as opposed to the significant number of items offered by most companies....Just saying. Thanks for the dish water soap tip, I will be trying and testing this. 😉

Also as you say Yvan has a lifetime in this as you do. Dish liquid, DIY rinseless wash, or panel prep tabs if I could get them. Is one method better than the other? Or either one is fine? What if you decon washed and paint corrected but then applied the coating on a different day (but on this day of coating you did another decon wash and IPa prior to applying the coating ?)
I feel this would be a great way to ensure the clear coat is free of said oils / fillers ect ?

I have a question and luckily it aligns perfectly with this video. I have purchased a brand new Subaru and the dealership told us they put a ceramic coating with a “6 year warranty “. After the first rain it was on just a factory paint job. No real hydrophobic effect at all. It beads but just sits there. I called and they had no problem applying it but told me I can stop by any sunny day and it will only take around “30-40 minutes”. This does not sound like enough time to prep and apply correctly. Should I trust them or just take care of it myself?

Their pay and employment is based on selling vehicles using whatever snake-oil sales pitch will work on a particular customer. They just repeat talking points that generate feelings of magic beans and fairydust for those attracted to such things.

Great stuff. One thing I do not hear enough about, is what actually happens if the surface is not prep'd perfectly? Does the coating just fail and you might have to redo it in a year or two? Or does it look horrible like flake/get cloudy/damage?
I am getting ready to do a brand new car, so I really do not want to go at it with polish to be honest. I am thinking of doing everything except that.

    • @PanTheOrganizer

If you don't prep the surface properly, the coating certainly won't last as long and will not perform as it's supposed to. It won't look bad on the surface though.
A new car is never new until it's properly detailed.
      - at the factory, the paint defects are often corrected quickly by rotary polishing which can leave marks and holograms, so polishing corrects those, before you lock that in long term with a ceramic coating for example.
      - vehicles are then transported by truck, train and boat so they are exposed to the elements, industrial fallout, brake dust, rail dust, etc
      - vehicles are often left at boat docks (when transported by boat) or in exterior parking lots for weeks or months, again being exposed to the elements
      - at the dealership, the vehicles are almost always poorly prepped using the same dirty water that was used for all the cars on a given day, and poor washing and drying methods leading to swirls and scratches
      - at the dealership, a layer of cheap wax or paint sealant is usually applied to attempt to make the paint glossy prior to delivery. It's crucial to remove any previous protection before you apply a ceramic coating, as coatings need to bond directly to a virgin clear coat.
If you only plan on applying a regular carnauba wax or paint sealant though, you could decide to skip machine polishing, as those protectants can be applied over existing protection and it's not as crucial to prep the paint as well.
I explain all of this in this popular video: th-cam.com/video/QgoyrC-5CMc/w-d-xo.html
So you can better visualize the new car prep process, here are the steps I perform on a brand new car for my customers:
