- Subash Ghising, once upon a time widely called ‘Appa’ by the Gorkha peoples of the Queen of Hills Dajreeling, happened to be such an influential politician who facilitated the long suppressed aspiration of the Gorkha community of India to sprout as a powerful ‘self-determination’ movement of 1980s called Gorkhaland Agitation.
Ghising fronted the Gorkhaland movement in the 1980s. Ghisingh, once the ‘uncrowned king’ of Darjeeling who coined the cause of ‘Gorkhaland’, expired in oblivion in New Delhi, away from his soil - Hills of Darjeeling at the age of 78. The founder leader of the Gorkha National Liberation Front, established in 1980, Ghising became the Chairman of the Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council in West Bengal, India from 1988 to 2008.
Born in 1936 in Darjeeling, Ghising became a part of the Indian Army at an early age of 18 in 1954, but quit it in 1960 and served as a teacher in a primary school in the hills. The deprived living circumstances of the people of the hills concerned him towards Tarun Sangh, a social organisation, where he was christened in the domain of politics.
Ghisingh, after founding a political ensemble Nilo Jhanda, began organising political platforms highlighting the cause of the people of the hills, which not only gained him fame amid the publics in the hills but also helped him in intensifying his mass base in Darjeeling.
Condemning the successive state governments of West Bengal and Centre of disregarding the grounds of the people of the hills and just treating them as a ‘vote bank’, Ghisingh in April 1979, for the first time elevated the demand for an isolated ‘state’ Gorkhaland based on linguistic and ethnic lines of Gorkha community within the constitutional framework of India.
With a call for a distinct state for the people of Darjeeling, Ghising coined the term ‘Gorkhaland’ and launched a fierce movement in Darjeeling in 1980 under the banner of GNLF, thus turning the queen of the hills into a battlefield of the self-determination of the peoples, leading to bereavements of more than one thousand people till 1988. After the interference of the then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and West Bengal Chief Minister Jyoti Basu, a historic tripartite agreement was signed between the Centre, state and Ghising, thus leading to the creation of a semi-autonomous body, Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council (DGHC) in 1988.

Thank you pankaj ji. This is an amazingly detailed video. I am from Assam, my father was in darjeeling during the time of agitation 86. Wo 1993 tak darjeeling me the. He used to tell me and my sister the stories of gorkhaland agitation, and we always used to listen with interest. Especially ghising ke bare me wo jis tarah se batate the 'ek aisa insan jo pure gorkhaon ke liye khada hua tha'. Aaj apne jo detailed me bataya it reminded me of my childhood, my dad isn't with us now, unko guzre 6 saal ho gaye aur ye story se unki yad aa gai. Thank you so much pankaj ji. Sad Sikkim , Darjeeling, some part of Uttarakhand was a part of Gorkha kingdom under Nepal , but after Anglo Nepal war , Sikkim and Darjeeling was given to india . It was in the wee hours of 18th Feb 1987 at Tingling tea estate in Mirik block of Darjeeling, I was sleeping with two of my siblings. I was 13 then, my elder brother was 17 and my younger brother was 10. All of a sudden, heard somebody trying to break open the main door of my house. We immediately realised that it was none other than the CRPF who had raided our home. My father, then , was the party's central committee secretary general who was very actively spearheading the Gorkhaland agitation under Ghissing's leadership. The CRPF broke open the door and entered our home. My home was completely sorrounded by the force at gun point by then. At the back door, one man in uniform was guarding the door at gun point. I asked him if he could allow us to go out. He said, -- 'chal bhaag'. I held my younger brother's hand and tried to escape from the back door. We had ran just around 10 to15 steps, my brother collapsed on the ground. Bullets were raining from all around and I asked my brother to get up and run without realising that he was hit with a bullet from behind. He was wreathing in pain in the abdomen with a portion of his intestine hanging from the wounds. Somehow I managed to take him a little away where I met with my mother and sister. I left him there and escaped into the nearby jungle. After the paramilitary forces left and I came back home, i found that my elder brother was also hit by the bullet and the villegers were making preparations to take both of them to the hospital. Till then, we had no information about our father, whether he was killed or arrested. After a few moments, one fellow from the neighbouring village came to inform us that my father is safe but severely injured.

Dont understand why the Central Government supported the land thieves Bengalis who has illegally stollen our ancestral land. Our demand for a sepaeate State is Constitutional and legitimate. Trying to suppress the demand of unarmed Gurkhas by using Armed Forces is a crime by the Central Government as well as State Government. In order to succeed achieving the Indian Gorkhaland our leaders and intellectuals MUST demand REUNIFICATION WITH SIKKIM. Then rename it the Bharatiya Gorkhaland. Bengal cannot claim the Datjeeling Dooars region as part of Bengal because 1. IT IS PART OF SIKKIM and 2. Bengal has stollen this region only because of economic gain from the region.
So what happened to your family? Did they recover from the injuries?
Like him or hate him but his contribution to the Gorkhaland movement will always be remembered and cherished unlike the leaders of current generation.

If Gorkhaland is illegitimate and anti social than living under the shadows of West Bengal is legitimate? being called out immigrants in their own home land is social? However it's sad that no-one like Subhash Ghising came after his demise .. someone with the same enthusiasm and vision . Gorkhaland is a talk in every house of Darjeeling hills . Darjeeling is known as the Queen of hills.
We belong to a beautiful place where a leader like Subash Ghising once used to walk.
But unfortunately, the people of Darjeeling didn't recognize him, and his work at that time and now also. People simply say he did a huge strike of 40 days and brought DGHC.
But people don't know why he withdrew from the strike, as Pankaj mentioned he was the first Indian Army and the man who joined the army had a deep-rooted love for his motherland, unfortunately, those were the days when our country was having an economic crisis which was brutal despite knowing all these things is happening to his motherland how could anyone do more things to his motherland which can accelerate the crisis and make her bleed more.
And now comes the West Bengal government not only wants to keep Darjeeling as a crown but also wants the revenue that generates from Darjeeling, just because of Darjeeling's revenue some other districts in WB survive.
