Gorkhaland is a movement of migrant Nepalese who immigrated to Sikkim And Darjeeling during modern history. Their Nepali identity is an off product of Nepali nationalism and identity that overspilled to Bhutan and Northeast area after they came to Mughlan. All Nepali people pahadka population ka identity formation Nepal se huwa hae. Nepal ka sahitya aur Nepal ka culture bahut follow kartey hain aur sabhi ko pata hain Nepalese identity Gorkha identity Gorkha rajawo se suruhuwa jo Nepal ka hi itihashik tathya hain. Nepali pravasi Assam Mizoram Meghalaya Nagaland Bhutan Sikkim me adhunik itihas me rehne lagey apna Nepali homeland chorke Northeast praves kiya. Bhutan aur northeastke pradesh me nepali identity rights demand karne se bahut political turmoil aur disturbance ki wajah se nepaliyo ko wahase dusri jaga palayan karna para. Gorkhaland ka sapna nahi ho sakta he kyu ki Nepali identity India me form nahi huwa hai aur is ka maang legitimate nahi he.

The Battle of Nalapani was the first battle of the Anglo-Nepalese War of 1814-1816, fought between the forces of the British East India Company and Nepal, then ruled by the House of Gorkha. The battle took place around the Nalapani fort, near Dehradun, which was placed under siege by the British between 31 October and 30 November 1814. The fort's garrison was commanded by Captain Balbhadra Kunwar, while Major-General Robert Rollo Gillespie, who had previously fought in the Battle of Java, was in charge of the attacking British troops. Gillespie was killed on the first day of the siege while rallying his men. Despite considerable odds, both in terms of numbers and firepower, Balbhadra and his 600-strong garrison successfully held out against more than 5,000 British troops for over a month

The narrative is simple. While the erstwhile independent kingdom of sikkim existed so did the kingdom of Limbuwan.
Limbuwan was an autonomous region that paid a tax of one horse per year to the Hindu King of Nepal and was promised help in case of war and had to promise to help the Hindupati in case of war with men and weapons.
Sikkim had its own issues with Limbuwan and one day war broke out betweed the two kingdoms . True to the agreement the Hindu king helped with money and men and Silkim was faced with defeat so they turned to the East India Company for help and East India Company helped Sikkim win the war. The terrorities of Limbuwan was annexed and the British leased the land from the Sikkim Raja to grow tea n build a place to recoup n recover.
Later when India got her independence Sikkim stayed silent about the territories they had leased out .
When the State Reorganizatiin Committee (in 1953/7not sure of the date) was comissioned to make the map of India the same tract of land was deemed as "tribal land" and it was merged with the state of Bengal "FOR ADMINISTRATIVE PURPOSES".
Then the Govt of India also forgot about this bit ofvland as the young nation had other pressing matters in hand.
The indegenous people who lived in those tracts of land fell victim to harrasment and exploitation by the Bengal Govt who basically excluded them from almost everything including fudging the population census that shows even today that the people didnt exist. Denied basic human rights on their own land and denied their own history the people were subjected to racism and excluded from self governance. To make their claims stronger the West Bengal Govt cleverly used the word "Nepali" to mean that the people came from Nepal hence they were forigeners.
The people were forced to give up their ethnic name and re name themselves as " Indian Gorkhas " a title that the fortunate citizens of Nepal condemn the people of Darjeeling to have "stolen" from them ....not even trying to understand how or why the people had to come to such a decision and what we have had to face to come to that situation where we were outcasts .
In Nepal we were/are still called Darjilingays and Dhotis meaning we were looked down for our Indian nationality that we are so proud of.
In India we were "Nepalis" or forigeners ...... Kehata ha na Hindi mei... Dhobi ka kutta na ghar ka na ghat ka.
Imagine such treatment being borne in silence for years and years. Finally in 1986 Shri Subash Ghishing lead the movement for Gorkhaland because we needed an identity and basic human rightsand enough was enough.
Bengal Govt fought back and politicised the movement with 99 percent of Bengalis not having the faintest idea of the history of the land.
Politicians spewed the narrative Bengal was not to be divided again and all that political rhetoric...over a land that was never a part of Bengal Imagine claiming ownership of a land that has names of villages and hills and townships in the tribal dialect and not even "Nepali language" that is the common link language of a group of people with our own languages and culture.
The tibetian refugees that were settled here is another angle altogether.
So here we are strangers on our own land being asked to prove our loyalty to our Nation and being asked to go back to Nepal. While our neighbours and brothers n sisters of Nepal call us Thieves for "STEALING" the GORKHA title.
The Government of Bengal insisting a piece of land that has names like Mirik and Kalimpong n Kharsang and Libang Sitrabung Pulungdung Lahring n Seering and Singringtam and manaebhyanjang as a part of Bengal when i am pretty sure they dont even know in which language these places have been named and yes these places existed before n during the East India Company. The British unfortunately rechristened a few teastates so we have a Bannokburn and Marylbone and Magrets hope as well but we can tell its the Brits who christened the place.
The Tibetian refugees who settled here under the blessings of the Congress have caused enough damage to the ethnic fabric along with being aided by the Govt to help them have control over most of the Govt jobs so that the Govt population census or anything related to us written down as record cannot be trusted...
. Glaring example ....... the number of "official numbers "of death according to the Bengal Govt during the 1986 Agitation for Gorkhaland to the real figures put up by families that lost their dear ones. There is a stark difference between the two.
Lallantop is welcome to walk into the govt offices to check this claim just as any independent reporter is welcome to walk into the govt run places and see the numbers of Gorkha officials and the numbers of non Gorkha officials holding top posts here in Darjeeling and then we can have a discussion on fair representation.
During the struggle for Independence the right to self rule was a birthright but in a democratic India asking for the same right as a citizen of this Nation has landed a huge number of our people in jail and faced with trumped up charges in 2017.
We still wait for justice from our Motherland.
Jai Bharat Jai Gorkha Jai Gorkhaland. 🙏🙏🙏

Being a 3rd generation nepali speaking indian citizen myself who doesn't belong to Darjeeling or Sikkim, i can't understand how does the creation of gorkhaland cater to the needs of entire nepali speaking citizens of India??
Even in the state of West Bengal, hillmen from Darjeeling and Kalimpong districts could avail or are entitled to the benefits of quotas and reservations in matters of education and state related government services not all the nepali speaking people of West Bengal whose grievances are seldom not taken into consideration.
Under such circumstances, there insistence on including the entire 1.5 crore nepali speaking citizens in India into the Gorkhaland movement seems like a blunder.
A major chunk of gorkha or nepali indians isn't concentrated in the districts around Darjeeling or Kalimpong. This entire movement doesn't have the characteristics of a coherent movement as far as "gorkha" identity is concerned. After the creation of gorkhaland, i am sure only the natives of the region are going to be well represented across all the major institutions of the newly created state.
The reason why Indian government should first define the term "gorkha" properly which isn't region centric, cuz the community is spread across length and breadth of the country and many still have ethnic and cultural ties with Nepal.

Gorkhas in West Bengal should receive Gorkhaland due to the importance of preserving and promoting their distinct identity. The Gorkha community has a rich cultural heritage, language, traditions, and history that distinguish them from the broader Bengali population in the region. The creation of Gorkhaland would provide a platform for the Gorkhas to preserve and celebrate their unique identity, fostering a sense of pride and belonging among the community members.
The establishment of Gorkhaland would also address the long-standing grievances of the Gorkhas regarding cultural assimilation and marginalization. Autonomy and self-governance would empower the Gorkha people to protect and promote their language, traditions, and heritage without the fear of being overshadowed by a dominant culture.
By recognizing the distinct identity of the Gorkhas through the creation of Gorkhaland, West Bengal can demonstrate its commitment to diversity, inclusivity, and the preservation of cultural pluralism within its borders. This move would not only benefit the Gorkha community but also contribute to the overall enrichment and harmony of the region's cultural tapestry.

That's only going to benefit the folks from Darjeeling only not the entire gorkha community. Stop dragging every Nepali speaking citizen of India into your discussion of gorkhaland. How many states are gonna be allocated to the gorkhas by that logic??
There are gorkhas in Nepal as well as Sikkim and they have their own piece of land and now you want another piece of land for the hillmen of Darjeeling.
What's gonna happen to those Nepalese that also live in India for a long time, but don't have any relation or connection to Darjeeling??
You aren't going to consider them as equals to the people of Darjeeling in matters of public employment, education and other opportunities.
Your administrators in the hills even deny one of my relatives to issue a gorkha certificate which would've helped him secure a government job in SSC and you are still stressing on inclusivity and equity.
      Such a hypocrisy.

The Gorkha Kingdom was a member of the Chaubisi rajya, a confederation of 24 states, located at the intersection of Himalayas and the Indian subcontinent. In 1743 CE, the kingdom began a campaign of military expansion, annexing several neighbors and becoming present-day Nepal.[1] The Gorkha Kingdom extended to the Marshyangdi River in the west, forming its border with the Kingdom of Lamjung. To the east, the kingdom extended to the Trishuli River, forming its border with the Nepal Mandala.[2] The Gorkha Kingdom was established in 1559 CE by Prince Dravya Shah, the second son of King Yasho Brahma Shah of Lamjung. The prince replaced the King Mansingh Khadka Magar who previously ruled the region

I am saying so because Darjeeling people and their culture is more similar to Sikkim than West Bengal.

@@Nepaboy that’s also what I am saying, these people say they r gorkhali and speak bad words against Nepal n in nepali language n deny any ancestral and roots with Nepal, so where did notion of gorkhaland come from, doesn’t make sense. They r confused lots, historically Darjeeling was sikkime region for better part. Our country Nepal ruled by house of gorkha held it for only few years when these regions were dwelled by local native Lepchas and bhutia.

@@khom3940 There are Lepcha, Bhutia, Tamang and Sherpas also in Nepal and There are Kiratis (Rai, Limbu), Janjati also in Nepal and we all are living together. It will be best for them to merge with Sikkim because it is better to be merged with Sikkim than those Bengalese and Modi will not accept statehood in the near future so it's ok to be Sikkim.

The Gorkhas ruled Garhwal with a rod of iron and the country fell into a lamentable decay. Its villages became deserted, its agriculture ruined and its population decreased beyond computation. It is said that two lakhs, (200,000) of people were sold as slaves, while few families of consequence remained in the country; but, to avoid the severity of the tyranny, they either went into banishment or were cut off or forcibly driven away by their tyrant.

There were 10 Gorkha Regiments during British era and after independence 6 regiments stayed with India and Britishers took 4 Regiment s. However, some army personnels from 4 Regiments which Britishers were taking refused to go with them, hence, 11 Gorkha Rifles was formed including all those people.
