Wow! What a lot of information. I haven't painted a car in almost 30 years. What has gone on in those years is mind blowing. I have watched this twice, trying to get my head around all the new paints, polyester, urethane, water born, primer surfaces/sealers---- Thank you for taking the time to post. I doubt if I will have a chance to use this information but I can still dream. Working on my pickup that has come to it's peak--- I can peak through the rockers, I can peak through the cab corners--- You get it. I live in the rust belt. Thanks again and I now see you have several other posts on painting that I haven't seen.
I learned a crazy amount of info in this video , poor mans mixer, spray gun light, consistent gun setup, water is not the reducer for waterborne paint..lol Super helpful video..thanks again!
I like how you talked about being calm when painting…. Every paint job I do I get stressed out while I am painting-not sure why. Most of the paint jobs are fine but I definately see lots of areas I can improve upon after watching your videos. I think the biggest takeaway is to paint every job like you’re shooting a candy-I think this breeds good habits. Thanks for sharing!
Thoughrly enjoyed. 25yrs painting collision work still enjoy watching someone that enjoys and knows what there doing. Just started building my own 30 x 80 shop so I can start restoring and customizing. The quantity over quality just became more than I can stand. Love the vid.
Great information on metallic lay down. I’ve seen other pro painters using this exact routine. But I’ve never seen a car painted in parts that had metallic going down. You’ve got to be pretty darn good to do that and have it end up looking like the entire car was painted all at once. Great video. All in the skill and know how.
im turning 50 this year been painting 30 odd years this was very informative with this never ending quest for a perfect pant job iam constantly looking & listening to anyone willing to show or tell me something ...then i can try it and see if it works for me... great video once again....
I've been watching paint & body videos for over 5 years and this is good stuff. Once again I'm getting information on this channel that you will not hear anywhere else. Thanks again for a very detailed video!
I very much like the direction you are going with your videos. Trying to wade through collision production techniques to high end custom techniques has been quite tricky. I have learned a lot from others but this is the direction I’m wanting to go. Thank you.
I learned how to prep and paint over 18 years ago. I've been out the game about 8 years and you make me want to get back at it. Great content and amazing work 👏🏿 👌
By far the best video on painting I’ve seen! Besides the quality of the content, the humbleness and humility to say that this is where you are after 25+years of making some mistakes before honing your process down to a T, is everything! To be a master of the craft, like yourself, it takes time and experience! That’s the biggest lesson!! Also thanks for the tips! I immediately started implementing your processes!!! Thanks man!! 💪🏼
Just come across your channel mate, love it! I've been in the game around 26 years now, my own business for the last 14 years and last 4-5 years just doing high end Resto's, your a good teacher and theres a few things you've shown that I'll be taking on board. Keep up the good work.
I'm obligated to give you a thumbs up no matter what. I learned more from watching one of your shows then I did from watching years of DIY Auto School 🤣
Brilliant presentation! I've been finishing furniture for 35 years and the amount of crossover info is a lot. You presented the details extremely well. Thank you for the time you put in. You've convinced me earlier to go with the ppg vp epoxy hybrid and this video helped fill in some questions I had. Cheers John.
John, That is PPG Vibrance Collection, 2050 DTM, High Build and Epoxy Based that can be sanded. The first time I saw it on Sylvester's Customs, my first thought was this stuff does everything and must cost at least $25 a quart, right? Very good explanation and the perfect tutorial into waterborne paint products. I am just joking about the $25 a quart, with stuff this good from PPG it has to be at least $32.50 per quart? DK, Omaha.
@@mercedesmaintenance.6339 I had just a little fun as they don't come thru the neighborhood playing a song & selling it out the side door! I have notice some paint gun sales promote internal coating for waterborne paint perhaps anodized. I enjoyed the video and caught the Kommiski reference to "Spay like a robot"! It gets into your head, but true. DK, Omaha.
I've always used sealer on a total respray but normally not on a panel spray. I would definitely use a sealer on an all over restoration spray. Just the way I was taught decades ago but I've seen guys do things I wouldn't dream of and get great looking results. I really dig the way you keep DOPE (Data On Previous Engagements) like a sniper keeps.
Great info! The EHP is actually cheaper per ounce than DBC but due to the reduction difference it comes out about the same. I like EHP because it lays flatter with better color control. Me and my partner sprayed different panels on a silver car. He sprays with SATA, I spray with Iwata. When the car was assembled, there was no mismatch at all. Downside is humidity is a killer with EHP. I wish PPG would develop a faster reducer. All paint companies bragged on water initially. Then I found out the test market was Southwest with dry heat/no humidity. I still bounce between water and solvent depending on the job. I use degreaser to wetsand any imperfections with EHP dragging the paper in one direction to avoid tearing the color. I'll only use an orientation coat if necessary, usually on lighter metallics or pearls. Not all the time but I tighten up the material about a turn with 12 -15 psi for that coat and only once instead of three. Contrary to PPG, orientation coats do not alter the color like they claim. I've been using the 5700 for quite a while. Great gloss retention and buffs great. Good for leveling painted graphics too. I slow it down as much as possible. Usually the 95 activator and reducer. Flow coating is a waste of time and material. With this 5700, 4-5 coats is plenty to flat sand and buff and still bury tape lines. I notice you don't use any Venturi driers. Do you have any certain set up in your booth for extra air flow? I was at a training facility and they had ceiling fans mounted to the upper plenum. Huge difference. I have a 3M full face mask. It's not air supplied but covers the whole face and takes the regular filters the half face does. Also, check into the spray socks to cover the head.
Wow all amazing info thanks so much for sharing I’ll look into all of that. Nothing special in our old booth I just take the time to let it all fully dry. Takes me a looooong time lol
@@SYLVESTERSCUSTOMS I was messing around with inventing a heated hand held Venturi drier(patent pending) to battle the summer humidity. We used to fire the burner in the booth in summer to dry the intake air before it to the booth. Made a huge difference. The quads are just a wind tunnel blowing dirt around. Wouldn't recommend. Ceiling fans and heat is where it's at.
You have yet to learn the drill press is the next paint mixer upgrade you need. Buy a crappy $70 one from harbor, it’s not like it’s drilling anything. Paint mixing is slow and easier. XD
Very good explaining and take the time to talk about details so even a beginner can understand. I have been painter for 20 + years and agree to all you said. The only thing i can bring to the table is that do not use wooden stick for mixing, especially paint. The wood can absorb some pigments wich maybe not so important on a full respray but when you make a repair it will make better colourmatch. I always use plastic sticks.
I can second this; not for paint though same logic applies. For structural adhesives, anything 2-part. The wood can absorb one product more than the other, throwing off your mix ratios. We only use stainless mixing sticks now.
Larry Great video. I am in the initial stages of painting the rear panels on my C7 for the second time (total amateur). I really liked the explanation regarding sealer. In the past I have not used sealer - mainly because I didn't know any better. I have been painting in the garage for about 4 years - just my stuff. Liked your take on 25 years of screwups. I'm there with screwups but only 4 years worth! Thanks for taking the time to present this - much appreciated.

@@SYLVESTERSCUSTOMS more paint! I’m not so sure I could spray out each individual panel and have a uniform color once I reassemble truck!! I have it in my brain lay down one or two coats assembled truck then come back over with last coat and then clear???
Most thorough and informative instructional video I have seen on this subject. I have seen many good videos showing paint jobs etc. but this video was absolutely great explaining how/what to do. Thank you, Sylvesters Customs!!!
Good stuff as always man... what a time to be alive to have this info at your fingertips. Answering so many lingering questions that are often muttered under my breath lol. Thanks for taking care of some of my dumb blonde moments.
The last coats you did I always been taught in the uk they are a drop coat. And normally I would cris crocs the pattern with high metallic bases so you wouldn’t keep going horizontally. What ever works is good enough that’s just how I was taught. Excellent vid.
Thanks my man even tho its a 7 year old video and I'm still finding it help full. Had a new car for a week and some one backed In to me , shop wanted 500$ to fix it but after this vedio I feel confident I can do the repair my self .
Thanks for the video I have painted six cars now . Each time they got better and better , with your video you showed me what I was doing right and the stuff I was doing wrong. Can’t wait till the next one it should come out awesome!!!!!😉 thanks so much!!
Great information! Your teaching style is easy to follow and the video editing is professional grade also. All of that together makes for an excellent video to watch!
I always find your videos informative and professional, thanks. I am about to start some projects with my boys (as I retire) and have not painted a car or a motorcycle for over 20-years and technology has moved on (HA - I can remember spraying nitrocellulose paint) and I appreciate your videos to get me 'up to speed'. And - crash repair methods can certainly be different than restoration type work. One needs to get the vehicle back out and shiny 'yesterday' - the other more focuses on the long term 'viability' of the work, and not satisfying the tight 'budget' of an insurance company. QUESTION - is 2050 an epoxy? I have yet to see PPG describe it as such in their literature. And because it can be sanded (unlike many others), will it have the same protection against moisture that the non-sandable epoxies seem to have? Once again - thanks for the detailed and professional 'lectures' on the correct and modern way of applying these materials. Try some knee pads - I often notice you on your knees on the concrete - it may catch up with you one day - better to be safe than sorry. CHEERS from AUSTRALIA.
Thank you. I absolutely need knee pads I feel it! As for the vp2050 you are correct they don’t put it in their tech sheets but my ppg rep and many others call it an epoxy. It has amazing protection from moisture.
I’ll be painting for the second time ever this answered a lot of my questions love the video well deserved like and subscribe from me. Biggest question this answered for me was figuring out how you like to spray and then setup the gun to work for you. My first time I setup the gun and kept trying to change how I was spraying. This makes so much more sense to me now trying to keep consistency. Much love man can’t wait to learn more
A lot went into this video. It was great! There's not a lot of videos about what to do when you run into a problem like fish eyes. Also if you are painting at home maybe you can show viewers a cheap way to filter exhaust to keep neighbors from dialing epa. Im looking forward to your upcoming vids. Thanks for all the hard work to share!
Bro, I always said the same thing about guns being a preference thing. I was strictly Sata or Iwata, BUT… If you try a Walcom or a new ANI, you’ll throw that Iwata away. I’m dead serious! I was blown away… Hell, I have about 7 ANI guns, I’ll send you one to try out! 👍
Man that was the best of the best love it .man u teach great this helped me greatly the best paint channel by far thank for showing us I'm telling everyone about this
This video is great, I’m in the middle of a transporter project, engine swap mods done, I’ve done 2coats of 2k epoxy, just getting ready to fill then 2k high build primer … been unsure on what grade sandpaper to use prior to base coat, da sand or block , wet or dry? Definitely appreciate the work the professionals do more now, so much more involved than I thought, lwb transporter van is my first project definitely learned a lot
Awesome video. You should do a video on how you put that car back together without messing the paint up. That is my worst fear. Tips and tricks to not damage paint, etc.
@@SYLVESTERSCUSTOMS That would be very nice. And how to get the alignment again and what you did to ensure they line up when door/trunk, etc installed back on. Did you do something prior to removing to ensure they go back to same spots when re-installed. thanks. Videos are great.

Love the tips! Thanks I bin doing this for quite some time but it helps leaning more to better my skills helps provide extra cash for my family especially my kids needs ! It helps getting by.. but hay I’m just getting by these days. Thanks brother!
A tip for you' since everyone is mostly using hvlp/lvlp guns these days spraying metalic colors instead of agitator cup guns or a couple of marbles in the cup to keep the metallics mixed like we use to do it back in the days' you can use a pickled hogs knuckle bone' wash it off with reducer and drop it in the cup' will help keep the metallics from separating.

Thanks glad they are helpful. Are we talking about paint? Or primer? Primer you can but it won’t be as good as it would be sprayed together.
Glad it was helpful! Thank you
Good stuff as always man... what a time to be alive to have this info at your fingertips. Answering so many lingering questions that are often muttered under my breath lol. Thanks for taking care of some of my dumb blonde moments.
Hahahahahahahahahahaha glad we’re of help!! Thank you
Excellent video. gives me some confidence for my first show car paint job.

Awesome very glad to hear we have a bunch of paint videos coming soon
Thank you! Very informative. One of the best instructives videos on YT.
Much appreciated!
The last coats you did I always been taught in the uk they are a drop coat. And normally I would cris crocs the pattern with high metallic bases so you wouldn’t keep going horizontally. What ever works is good enough that’s just how I was taught. Excellent vid.
Yes drop coat or orientation it’s all the same exactly whatever works 👌🏻
Genius explanation! I feel even more confident I learned something about spraying and prepping.
Glad it was helpful!
Wow! Once you put the clear on, the color really pops. Beautiful color 👍 Great job too.
Thank you

Excellent job on the paint as well as the presentation.
Thanks for the effort!
Many thanks!
Great video
Thanks for the visit
Thorough and informative. High quality vid thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks Travis that was Awesome. That Is a DEEEP Color. Thanks for your Information.
My pleasure!!
Brilliant video! Thanks for sharing.
Our pleasure!
Much love man can’t wait to learn more
Awesome to hear!!! Thank you so much
Glad to see some new video! You make the best paint videos out here
Thank you very much
A lot went into this video.
Great idea we need requests like yours sometimes I forget about things like that. 👌🏻thank you
I think one of the things you can do is paint when it is colder outside and the neighbors don't have the their windows open..or their laundry out.
Yeah I love walcom too I have a couple zero complaints. Haven’t tried ANI yet
This is a really good tutorial, well done and thank you.
Glad it was helpful!

Thanks very informative 👍 I learned a lot.
Keep up the good work.
Glad it was helpful!
That was terrific. Excellent teaching job
Thank you
This video is great, I’m in the middle of a transporter project, engine swap mods done, I’ve done 2coats of 2k epoxy, just getting ready to fill then 2k high build primer … been unsure on what grade sandpaper to use prior to base coat, da sand or block , wet or dry? Definitely appreciate the work the professionals do more now, so much more involved than I thought, lwb transporter van is my first project definitely learned a lot
I block sand wet with water in 600 grit but you can use a DA the finish won’t come out as clean tho
Awesome video. You should do a video on how you put that car back together without messing the paint up. That is my worst fear. Tips and tricks to not damage paint, etc.
Great suggestion! I’ll have to do that
@@SYLVESTERSCUSTOMS That would be very nice. And how to get the alignment again and what you did to ensure they line up when door/trunk, etc installed back on. Did you do something prior to removing to ensure they go back to same spots when re-installed. thanks. Videos are great.
Love the detail you provide. Awesomely done!!!!!
Glad you liked it!

Happy to help!
Thanks for explaining all your tricks n tips
Anytime thx for watching!
Interesting! I’ve never heard that before
Outstanding. Answered many questions I had. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
