I'm so glad you highlighted the fact that this type of work is very, very labor intensive (ie: hours and hours), therefore expensive to do. Also glad you didn't uncover any hidden previous major repairs you would have had to address and increase the bill. Awesome work!
Thank you for putting up a video like this. I will show my customers I am a mobile auto body man and sometimes people are unrealistic. They want this type of bodywork and paint job done for like $1200.
hey bigchris, I have an inexpensive car I think I may try to DIY, I would probably try to follow a similar process to this video, maybe having major repair areas done by a professional shop before I would start. how much do you think it would cost in materials? and for a very high quality spray gun? thanks. and rent the compressed air?
@@pawpawbandit3871 paint guns could go up to $2000 for an inexperienced person couple hundred bucks for a halfway decent spraygun material depending on the color you want about six to $700 and I don’t know if you could rent a compressor. It might be cheaper to buy.

Thanks for the video Brian. I do everything all by myself and I often will tell my wife that when you watch a car show where they have a team of guys working on one car that it is very misleading when they crank out a job in a couple days vs my couple weeks or more. This puts it all in perspective and assures me that I'm on track...no mater how painful it may be.
Dear Brian, once again thank you so much for this episode, showing the way you like to transition from base coat to clearcoat was really valuable to me today. Stay blessed my friend 🙏

It’s funny to me to watch you do a restoration paint job on a car that I painted when they were brand new😂 my restorations were 55 Chevy,s model, A’s and old British race cars.. it’s great to see the younger generation still knows how to work and do things the right way!! I still have Paint on the brain even though I’ve been retired for years. I saw the Red sealer on the quarter panel and knew it was either sickens or RM.😂
I had my 93 prelude si restored in the same exact manor but I used new formula red from the S2K since its a little less pink in the sun. Totally worth all the time the body shop had the car and it still looks amazing to this day.
Thank you for all your work. I’d like to see a video on how you bag, tag, label and store all the various parts you take off before painting. I know it’s mundane, but I imagine you have a strict organizational method that keeps everything in order and easy to locate when reassembling. Thx.
Hey Brian! I couldn't tell if I was seeing things right in this video when you were spraying the separate panels (i.e. doors and hood) It look almost as IF MAYBE the gun was missing a few times? I mean as in maybe fluid was leaning too far forward and not getting into the bowl all the way. We use the PPS system where I work. And a vet taught me with the PPS system to put the gun upside down and pull the trigger until you get material leaving the gun consistently and no sputter. This creates a vacuum and you can shoot with the gun upside down (as we do sometimes) and have no spray failure. (wasn't sure if this was something you were already aware of with the PPS system that you can do) Just thought I saw something and thought i would try to share something to help if I could. Thanks for creating amazing content, Brian L.

In Australia that job would be a +$20k paint job in a paint shop due to high wages, materials & overhead running costs of a shop these days & high cost of decent quality auto paint product in current market. I have to do a full repaint job on my Euro 1989 Mercedes 560SEL (midnight blue) and this time i am painting out all the chrome/alloy trim as per how AMG did it back in the day as mine is AMG spec with full bodykit & wheels & interior. The existing paint is original and minor blemishes (bird poop etc) but i want a show car finish that i will be undertaking at home myself & painting it myself. Your videos are inspirational & top notch and very appreciated from a long term subscriber
This is why the younger generations go with the fully plastidip body wrap… I am old school and appreciate the effort and look of a high quality paint job
I was going to comment that you left out the paint correction step at the end, but then I saw your follow-up glass finish video! You can't leave out that step for a show car.
Nice I just did a $3.50 paint job on a Camero 😂 luckily it's mines but that looks great thanks for the tips and tricks appreciate u man keep it coming watching an learning alot thanks 🙏
Every time I watch one of your videos I end up thinking to myself "self, you could paint your own car -- it's just paint." Then by the next morning, that confidence is gone... so watch the videos in the morning.
I think shops like yours can usually make paint look better than factory, but I was just wondering if it's more durable... especially given that you can pick and choose the type of paint you use and the number of coats. Does the modern body filler hold up well with cars driven every day?
It’s definitely more durable. Out the factory it probably only has about 2.0 mils of paint, he probably put down at least 4 mils.. and the clear coat he used is much higher quality. Rock chips for example definitely won’t chip down to bare metal on this paint job that’s for sure
So glad i came across your channel. You went ham on the EM1. Awsome. Correct. Its got to be blocked by hand only being very careful not to round off all the nice sharp body lines
Worth more than the car! Sheesh. My hatch needs a new paintjob as the previous owner had a cheapy done. All of it needs to be sanded off as it chips so easy...
I will say if you know what your doing and have the right tools you can straighten a car by using a sander, again you need to know what your doing and keep an eye on stuff, like by using a guide coat and you can get away with it forsure, but the hand sanding lets you have control of the process the whole way, but unless your getting a high end paint job I wouldn’t expect anyone to skim coat your whole car and then sand it all by hand.
Awesome series! Im currently planning to do similar to my Prelude. Any suggestions on any dents at the A Pillars? Where windshield, hood and fender meet?
That's cool to see all the imperfections when the body filler is sanded. Withe the nekad eye you'd think it looks good but body filler showed it needed it. Pretty cool!

I’m restoring a 1980 Camaro in my garage. Due to paint being completely bad I’m going to have to strip it to metal. I know I need to put epoxy primer on it. What spray gun should I get? I’m planning to do epoxy primer, base, and clear.

Jeez. I feel like I’ma have to bring several of my cars down from NJ to FL just to be painted by you. Finding a shop with this quality of work is difficult.
Why would you use glazing putty over something like Slick Sand? Is glazing putty for slightly larger imperfections or is it 6 of 1 and a half dozen of the other?
Hi, sorry if this is a noob question but why only 2 coats of clear? I would have thought a couple more coats would have given a bit more depth and to leave lots of room for flatting and many rounds of polishing it might get over the years it might attend shows. With this much effort into the prep and base is there a negative to more clear coats?
Do you guys wipe down your plastics with adhesion promoters prior to spraying them? Just curious how the new paints are. I haven't had the fun of being in a paint booth for going on 10 years.
Brian, Incredible paint work. Can you list the materials used from primer coat up? the roof received DTM primer but other panels did not. Can you list what exactly was used on the roof as I suspect all the other panels received the same materials. I was watching the video and all of a sudden the car was red after the sanding. Was that sealer or was that primer? Thanks!!
Nice video, gives the non painters out there a bit of an idea of the amount of prep that goes into a job like this, we have seen this old girl in a few old videos :)0
And demonstrates why you really really really need to take care of factory paint unless you want to go through this entire process A simple gyeon ceramic with a solid day or two of prep goes a long way on preserving the existing paint Overall I just see way too many people destroy their vehicles purely out of laziness leading to trading or the long process of new paint
So brian, youre not a painter by trade? Youre a schoolteacher but painting is youre passion? Is that right? You do a great job of teaching painting to us anyhow
Beautiful work, but dang. A 2000 Civic Si was originally less than $18,000. Spending $10,000 to paint one of these is wild. That said, if kept well, I suppose in another 20 years it could potentially be worth something.
Yeah 10k is not just the painting and material itself but the bodywork and stripping and putting Bek together after paint. Body work takes so many hours
Can you use the same primer for bare metal as you do for rest of the car? My trunk, roof and hood are cracked and need to be taken to bare metal but the sides of my fairlane are in good shape and just need sanded and sprayed. Also can I get away with taping the trim off down the sides because it would be really difficult to remove?
Here's maybe a dumb question related to your paint mixing system which I know you occasionally mention and have covered slightly more fully at one point and maybe I'll just have to take the time to go track down that video again, but what happens when you are mixing your paints, toners, reducers, etc. if you* accidentally do something like: a. rest your finger or the pouring container onto the receiving container momentarily and exceed the fl.oz weight of the remainder of the liquid you have to pour. Does it immediately say "Now for the next component..." or does it wait for you to hit a Next button on that touch screen when you are within a margin so if you take your finger off and once again have 5fl oz left to pour it doesn't jump ahead of you and waits for that? or: b. overpour a component significantly enough to affect the desired finish. Will the system automatically recalculate and go back to already added components to recalculate what needs to be added to get back to the desired colour? *you = not necessarily you, but anyone who might be tired, weak, training, etc and makes such a mistake on a rare occasion.
YES, Would have 3 heavy urithane 2 stage primer..180 15IN hand block w/ guide and reguide and 220 and finish .. Just my warped way.. Has worked for me on BMW 2002 restore..
@@tnasituning8173 is sprayayable filler. Will do the same as the glazzing putty Brian used but abit let sanding if you spray it smooth. Then block again 180. Then 2k primer over it. Is just another way of doing it.

Yall do some great work. Curious why you didn't mask off the center and 2 side vents(fog light area) of the front bumper? If your going for true OEM restoration, those areas were not painted from factory.

Beautiful work, but dang. A 2000 Civic Si was originally less than $18,000. Spending $10,000 to paint one of these is wild.
That said, if kept well, I suppose in another 20 years it could potentially be worth something.
Whats a good way to find shops that will do this when most are collision paint+body...?
I’m working on a resto job…what was the clear used for this project?
10:15
Skipped ahead. Went from primer to red primer or was that trying to paint them re-doing it?
do you use adhesion promoter and flex agent on the bumper parts?
Yeah 10k is not just the painting and material itself but the bodywork and stripping and putting Bek together after paint. Body work takes so many hours
Paint job worth more than the car! But beautiful job, excellent work
How long did you wait between each item after mixing the paint? Just trying to determine the shelf life.
I love how you keep calling it an EM1 vs POS civic
Looks excellent what clear did you use?
Sikkens hs plus
@@PaintSociety thanks for the reply looks beautiful
Can you use the same primer for bare metal as you do for rest of the car? My trunk, roof and hood are cracked and need to be taken to bare metal but the sides of my fairlane are in good shape and just need sanded and sprayed. Also can I get away with taping the trim off down the sides because it would be really difficult to remove?
Ours is direct to metal primer
Here's maybe a dumb question related to your paint mixing system which I know you occasionally mention and have covered slightly more fully at one point and maybe I'll just have to take the time to go track down that video again, but what happens when you are mixing your paints, toners, reducers, etc. if you* accidentally do something like:
a. rest your finger or the pouring container onto the receiving container momentarily and exceed the fl.oz weight of the remainder of the liquid you have to pour. Does it immediately say "Now for the next component..." or does it wait for you to hit a Next button on that touch screen when you are within a margin so if you take your finger off and once again have 5fl oz left to pour it doesn't jump ahead of you and waits for that?
or:
b. overpour a component significantly enough to affect the desired finish. Will the system automatically recalculate and go back to already added components to recalculate what needs to be added to get back to the desired colour?
*you = not necessarily you, but anyone who might be tired, weak, training, etc and makes such a mistake on a rare occasion.
The system will re-calculate and make you repour the other toners to equal it out again.
Awesome work. You could have use a slicksand sprayable filler also
Great idea
YES, Would have 3 heavy urithane 2 stage primer..180 15IN hand block w/ guide and reguide and 220 and finish .. Just my warped way.. Has worked for me on BMW 2002 restore..
How does that compare to their Evercoat Featherfill G2 Polyester Primer?
@@tnasituning8173 is sprayayable filler. Will do the same as the glazzing putty Brian used but abit let sanding if you spray it smooth.
Then block again 180. Then 2k primer over it.
Is just another way of doing it.
Man i have 3 cars i would love for you to do a video on. I have 65 ac cobra, a 69 restomod and a datsun 280z. I would love something different done to any of them. I paid 15k for my paint on the cobra
Yall do some great work. Curious why you didn't mask off the center and 2 side vents(fog light area) of the front bumper? If your going for true OEM restoration, those areas were not painted from factory.
We go back and paint those black afterwards for a cleaner finish
Always a nit pick in the bunch - couldn't just say it was a great job and tutorial - typically jealous people do that
Do change spray when applying clear coat?
